Unit 1 Men and women’s prejudices

Part I Read the following passage aloud.

The very language we use to discuss men’s roles (i.e., deadbeat dads) shows a lack of appreciation f or the majority of men who quietly yet proudly fulfill their family responsibilities. We almost never hear t he term “working father,” and it is rare that calls for more workplace flexibility are considered to be for men as much as for women. Our society acts as if family obligations are not as important to fathers as t hey are to mothers — as if career satisfaction is what a man’s life is all about.

Even more insulting is the recent media trend of regarding at-home wives as “status symbols”— like an expensive car — flaunted by the supposedly few men who can afford such a luxury. The implication i s that men with at-home wives have it easier than those whose wives work outside the home because t hey have the “luxury” of a full-time housekeeper. In reality, however, the men who are the sole wage e arners for their families suffer a lot of stresses. The loss of a job — or even the threat of that happening — is obviously much more difficult when that job is the sole source of income for a family. By the same token, sole wage earners have less flexibility when it comes to leaving unsatisfying careers because of t he loss of income such a job change entails. In addition, many husbands work overtime or second jobs to make more money needed for their families. For these men, it is the family that the job supports that makes it all worthwhile. It is the belief that having a mother at home is important to the children, whic h makes so many men gladly take on the burden of being a sole wage earner.

Part II. TOPIC Men and women’s prejudices

Section One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Men and women’s prejudice s and roles”.

1.What’s the division of labor like in your family?

My father works outside home.He is the breadwinner of my familly. My mother is a housewife, she coo ks meals, do the laundry, and take care of my grandparents. Both of their works are challenging and har d.But we live a harmonious life.

2.Many people hold the view that men are different from women in many ways. What’s your opinion ab out it?

Yes,men are different from women in many ways. They think differently, act differently , dress differen tly and behave differently.Men are stronger than women, and they play more important roles in feeding a family. But women play more and more important roles in our socity than before. In my opinion, both g enders should be equal. While women are gaining more importance, especially at home and their workp lace, men should not be overlooked.

1.How to be a good father?

There are many ways to be a good father. Firstly, spend time and take responsibility for your children. Secondly, be a good teacher by both word and example. Thirdly, respect your children’s mother and do n't place unreasonable expections on your children.

4.Some people say women are born to be homemakers. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

1)I disagree. In the past, women are supposedly less abled than the men, so they were supposed to st ay at home to take charge of the household while the men go out to work. Since women with education was seen as a minus point when they find a good marriage, there were few learned women, thus wom en cannot take part in doing the more important jobs, like working in a large firm.

2)I don't agree. Most women can have goods jobs and they can do them well. But they don't have mo re freedom than men. Because in their opinion, nothing is more important than watching their children grow up in the world. So they give up their jobs and become a homemaker. But not be born to be home maker.

1.Do you think a “househusband” is an easy job?

I don't think so. As a househusband, he must do a lot of things. Everyday they have to do all the hou sehold duties. He should take good care of their children which not just cook for them. He should give t hem lots of love and attention. All of those are not easy. So never look down on women.

6. In business world, there are more male top managers than female ones. How would you explain this phenomenon?

Firstly, the inequality between men and women have always been. Secondly, young women think watc hing their children grow up is the biggest thing in the world. So they lost a promotion. Thirdly, women a re less interest in empire-buildings.

Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:

In today’s China, the boundary between the traditional social roles played by men and those played by women is becoming increasingly blurred. Please identify some driving factors behind this dramatic chan ge.

During the discussion you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify a point. Y our performance will be judged according to your contributions to the discussion.

1. In today’s society, greater equality between men and women. So women can do the

same things as men.

2. Now more and more women have a high degree. Then, they have the abilities to do

more things.

3. In some ways, the female is more dominant. Like language. And they are more

careful than men.

Unit 2 Culture

Part I Read the following passage aloud.

Certain lessons have to be learned the hard way. Some well meaning articles and presentations on cul tural differences have a potential to do more harm than good and may not be as amusing. They present , like my bananas, too many generalizations or quite a distorted view. Some often-

heard generalizations about the Hispanic culture include: Hispanics need less personal space, make less eye contact, touch each other more in normal conversation, and are less likely to participate in a meetin g. Generalizations are often dangerous, and especially when accompanied by recommendations such as : move closer when talking to Hispanics, make more physical contact, don’t expect participation, and so on. Differences between people within any given nation or culture are much greater than differences between groups. Education, social standing, religion, personality, belief structure, past experience, affec tion shown in the home, and a myriad of other factors will affect human behavior and culture. Sure th ere are differences in approach as to what is considered polite and appropriate behavior both on and off the job. In some cultures “yes” means, “I hear you” more than “I agree.” Length of pleasantries and gr eetings before getting down to business, level of tolerance for being around someone speaking a foreig n (not-

understood) language, politeness measured in terms of gallantry or etiquette (e.g., standing up for a w oman who approaches a table, yielding a seat on the bus to an older person, etc.) and manner of expec ted dress are all examples of possible cultural differences and traditions.

Part II. TOPIC Culture

Section One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Culture”.

1.What do you think is culture?

Culture is the patterns of behavior and thinking that people living in social groups learn, create and sh are. A people’s culture includes their beliefs ,rules ,language, art and so on. It can distinguishes one hu man group from others.

2.Have you ever been to a place with a culture that is different from yours? Can you tell any cultural di fferences between people?

So far, the places I have go the cultures are similar with my hometown. But I know some little differe nce from my home. for example, we don't eat rice but Qingdao is different. We east the most is the por k but Qingdao has so much chicken.

3.If you are invited by an American friend for a dinner party, what etiquette should you observe?

Firstly, don't place your napkin on your lap. Don't drink soup from the rim of your bowl. Secondly, do keep bones or anything you can’t eat on your plate. Thirdly, do say “excuse me” if you burp accidentally . And don't leave until the meal is over. And don't keep offering someone food if they say they are full.

4.Some people write articles to generalize cultural differences. What do you think of these generalizatio ns? Do they do more good than harm or vice versa for you to learn about that culture?

Maybe some generalize can help people learn that culture to a certain extent. But some well meaning articles on cultural differences have a potential to do more harm than good. Because they may mislead us.

5.Do you think that Chinese culture is superior to other cultures in the world?

No. There is no doubt Chinese culture is brilliant,

and it has been spread for a long time. But it doesn’t mean that Chinese culture is superior to other cult ures. To make a better development,we need learn from other culture,

and make innovation to develop Chinese culture.

6.How might cultural awareness or cultural blindness promote or affect your communication?

We may make some troubles and misunderstanding,

which are the blocks of communication. When we live with others,

the first thing we need to do is to understanding others’ lifestyle and habits or customs,

which is effected by the environment they living in. or we can’t have a normal communication.

Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:

In today’s China, the boundary between the traditional social roles played by men and those played by women is becoming increasingly blurred. Please identify some driving factors behind this dramatic chan ge.

In my opinion, we should keep our own culture. Traditional culture stands for our identity, and it’s the important wealth of the Chinese people. As Chinese develop our culture is our great mission. But we sh ould innovate. So we should absorb the essence of foreign culture, and add new elements to our traditi onal culture, then it will survive forever.

Unit 3 Copyright

Part I Read the following passage aloud.

The reality is: Whether the bulk of your presentations are in-house or to external audiences, your odd s of being caught violating copyright are improving every day, as are your chances of paying a stiff fine. Statutory damages for infringing on copyright can hit $20 000 per violation, and they can go as high as $100 000 in some circumstances of willful violation — and that’s above and beyond the fine for actual d amages. Furthermore, commercial copyright violation involving more than 10 copies and a value of mor e than $2 500 is now a felony in the United States. In one recent case, a corporation paid a seven-fig

ure settlement for its unauthorized photocopying of articles from a trade journal and archiving those co pies for internal distribution. With similar violations occurring almost daily in corporate America, and wit h an increase in piracy on the World Wide Web, licensing organizations, performing-rights societies and other copyright cops have stepped up activity to enforce their rights. The Training Media Association, a watchdog for training-video vendors, offers a $10 000 bounty for reporting illegal copying or unautho rized “public performance” of off-the-shelf training videos. A temporary-employment agency recently pai d a six-figure out-of-court fee after one of its employees reported it to the TMA for making illegal copies of four videos (the agency had no license to do so) and sending the copies out for use in its 50 offices.

Part II. TOPIC Copyright

Section One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Copyright”.

1.Is downloading music from the internet ethical? Why or why not?

This is a controversial issue. On the one hand, those who are positive about it believe that downloadi ng music for free is something that most of us have engaged in one time or another. It is certainly no hi gh crime. Sharing music files online for free is a mini-consumer revolution and boon for artists — it is de finitively ethical. On the other hand, those who are against it argue that it's no different from going into the artist's house and stealing his CD off the shelf. By stealing music, you are not only hurting musicians but also breaking the law.

2.Do you download anything from the Internet? What kind of things did you usually download?

Yes. Usually some music, stories, pictures, programs and so on.

3.Have you ever bought a pirated product? Why did you buy it?

Yes. Because it is very cheap and is of good quality.

4.Have you ever faced a situation where you violated copyright, if you have, what is the consequence a nd what did you do?

No.I haven’t.

5.What kind of activities are considered as violating copyright?

The illegal ownership of the duplication rights for computer programs, literary works, musical compositio ns, motion pictures, etc.

6.What is the purpose of the copyright law?

The purpose of copyright law is to promote the progress of useful arts and science by protecting the e xclusive right of authors and inventors to benefi t from their works of authorship

Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:

Is copyright infringement theft? How should we protect copyright? Give some examples.

This question has two different but valid answers. If one answers the question from a strictly legal poi nt of view, copyright infringement is clearly not theft. It is only a violation of one or more specific statut es, violation is different from theft. In general, the legal definition of theft involves the unauthorized taki ng of another’s property. Even though we use the phrase Intellectual Property rather casually, making a copy of a protected work does not involve taking that property — it involves violating the owners’ right to control copying of the property. Others who are willing to rely on a more informal definition of the wo rd “theft” assert that copyright infringement is theft. It may not meet the standard for statutory theft, b ut violating someone’s right to control copying at a minimum represents an ethereal opportunity cost, a nd in many cases tangible economic loss. To the person who finds their work stolen, the feeling of theft is quite real.

Unit 4 Language and Economy

Part I Read the following passage aloud.

As for medical schools, the main requirement for admission is only thirty-two hours of science course s. This requirement is certainly no impediment to a major in English. Moreover many medical schools re quire a minimum score on the Medical College Admission Test (M.C.A.T.), another test which offers an a dvantage to the well-rounded liberal arts student.

The M.C.A.T. evaluates four areas of competence: skill with synonyms, antonyms, and word associati on; knowledge of basic mathematics from fractions through solid geometry; general knowledge of litera ture, philosophy, psychology, music, art, and the social sciences; and familiarity with those fundamental s of biology, chemistry, and physics taught in high school and in introductory college courses.

The English major with a solid, basic grounding in science is well prepared for this test and for medic al school, where his or her skills in reading, analysis, interpretation, and precise communication will equi p him or her to excel. The study and practice of medicine can only benefit from the insights into human behavior provided by the study of literature.

Such insights are obviously also valuable to the student who plans a career in commerce. Such stude nts should consider the advantages of an English major with an emphasis in business: this program is d esigned to provide a liberal education, as well as to direct preparation for a business career. The need f or such a program is clear: graduates with merely technical qualifications are finding jobs in business, b ut often failing to hold them. Both the Wall Street Journal and the Journal of College Placement have re

ported that increasing numbers of graduates from reputable business schools find themselves drifting fr om one job or firm to another, unable to hold a position for longer than twelve months.

Part II. TOPIC Language and Economy

Section One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Language and Economy”. 1.Do you think English is very important to you? In what way?

Yes, it is very important. With English, we can read more interesting books, we can see lots of foreign films, we even can find a good job. English is a tool and a kind of ability which make you different from others. It will help you find a good job with a high salary. Then you’ll have a good life in future.

2.How popular is English?

It’s hard to say. Most countries in the world, English is their mother language or a second language. T hey all can speak English. In some important international business and conference, English is the only l anguage. In china, all students are learning English or are going to learn it.

3.In what ways will English help you surf on the Internet, or can you tell us the importance of English o n the Internet?

When I see foreign films or watch English plays, I can not see subtitles. Then I pay attention to actors ’ expression and action. That I’ll not miss something interesting. English also help me find some softwar e and useful material. At that time, I think English is so cool.

4.Now more and more foreign people start to learn Chinese. Why is Chinese learning getting popular th ese days? Can you think of the possible reasons?

It closely related to china’s economic development and the personality of Chinese. They think learn C hinese can give them more career chances, of course, they also have the opportunity to understand chi na. So learning Chinese has potential value.

5.Which language may be used as the lingua franca in the 21st century, English or Chinese? Why?

I think it’s English .No doubt China has became a world power,

and more and more people are learning Chinese. But due to the effect of English is so wide. English is s till the lingua franca, and it’s easy to learn. On the contrary,

Chinese is hard to learn. It’s not easy to be spread.

6.Do you think English major graduates have better chances to secure careers in English--speaking cou ntries?

Yes, recent years, competition in china is becoming more and more serious. Many graduate students are different to find good jobs, but the English major graduates have more choices, they can go abroad and find a job easily in English speaking countries

Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:

Is it necessary for everyone to speak English? How should we learn English?

No we needn’t, it all depends. English just a tool to help us find a good job, and makes our life more e asy and wonderful. After all, in china we can’t always use English . so it is not necessary for everyone to speak English.

Yes, Nowadays English is widely spoken around the world, At the same time, the Opening of national borders to the flow of goods, services, information. We can see, English is applied to every field,

In my opinion, we should improve our English standard. If we can Speak English, we will get a good jo b. No matter what major you have learned in College. Speaking English is of great importance and valu e.

Unit 5 Business Ethics

Part I Read the following passage aloud.

It’s a message that says: you can’t just blame the system for the bad things you’ve done. Yet to the world’s dismay, thousands of men and women entrusted with our economic well being systematically fai led to meet this minimum standard of civilized behavior. They did not capably discern right and wrong. They either did not judge, or they did not act on their judgment. This failure defines the raw heart of th e public’s outrage at each fresh disclosure of outlandish bonuses. It is less a thirst for revenge than it is a rebellion against this banal evil. The public’s indignation reflects a sense of morality that points deep er and truer than the laws devised to protect self-serving business practices. The call now is to take bac k our community, to return to a place where people are capable of telling right from wrong because the y recognize themselves in one another. The public demands — no, commands — that our leaders reass ert their capacity, their duty, to judge what is right, even if that means standing up to lawsuits and angr y bankers. By now the existential security of millions of people has been threatened or destroyed. No one is safe from the waves of value destruction set into motion by the banal evil of this self-centered bu siness model and the unquestioning participants who failed to assert their own moral judgment. The urg ent lesson for capitalism’s heirs redounds through every headline: There is no “other;” there is only us. The damage that was supposed to be “theirs” is now shared misery on a global scale.

The economic crisis has demonstrated that the mounting evidence of fraud, conflicts of interests, indi fference to suffering, repudiation of responsibility, and systemic absence of individual moral judgment p roduced an administrative economic massacre of such a proportion that it constitutes an economic crim e against humanity.

Part II. TOPIC Business Ethics

Section One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Business Ethics”.

1.Have you or your friend ever been cheated by a manufacturer? Describe your experience to your part ner.

https://www.360docs.net/doc/9115563423.html,st year I planned to buy a computer so I could surf the net.I want to find a cheap one that is a ttractive and easy to use.I found one which seemed very good and catered for the needs of a collefe st udent. The ads on the net boasted several unique functions, and good after sale service. But when I boug ht it,I found this was not the case. The guarantee for good service disappeared and the claimed unique f unctions were simply illusions.

2.What do you know about Wall Street and the 2008 economic crisis?

Wall Street refers to the financial district of New York City.Over time, the term has become a metony m for the financial markets of the United States as a whole,or signifying New Yorkbased financial interes ts.It is the home of the New York Stock Exchange, the world’s largest stock exchange by market capitaliz ation of its listed companies. The Economic Crisis of 2008 is believed to have occurred because of global inflation, increased unemployment, high oil and food prices,a declining dollar value,a horrible housing ma rket, and a subprime mortgage crisis. The subprime residential mortgage crisis leading to millions of peop le losing their homes reached its climax in August 2008,when financial institutions reported billions of do llars in losses. Thus instability on Wall Street immediately spilt over into the European and Asian stock m arkets, thereby rapidly permeating the entire financial system.

3.Is a moral leadership necessary for business success?

Yes.Everyone knows a modicum of ethics is called for in any business as you can’t cheat your custom ers forever and get away with it.Unethical business practices are bound to derail your career or compan y, the abrupt collapse of Sanlu Group is the very hard lesson many businessmen should earn.Moral virtu es such as compassion, responsibility, fairness, and honesty are essential ingredients in the recipe for b usiness success in the long run. Far from being a constraining force that merely keeps people honest an d out of trouble, morality creates a fertile source of business motivation, inspiration, and innovation. A s trong sense of moral purpose notonly promotes a business career but also provides a telling advantage i n the quest to build a thriving enterprise.

4.What a role does individual moral judgment play in our life?

Individuals, consciously or unconsciously, formulate their judgments of what is moral and what is imm oral on the basis of their private system of moral values. This moral judgment or moral thinking certainl y plays an indispensible role in our life, guiding us to do ethically and distancing us from wrongdoings u nder special circumstances.Bertrand Russell wrote in his essay “Education and Discipline” that individual civilizationcertainly consists of intellectual, physiological and MORAL qualities-“of impartiality, kindliness, and a modicum of self-control.” Being civilized human beings, we are able to distinguish what is right fr omwhat is wrong and try hard to take moral actions accordingly. It is our moral sense that keeps us awa y from trade-offs between ambition and conscience. For people with integrity, honesty and a strong mor al sense doing the right thing outweighs doing things right.

5.When you feel cheated in business dealings, what will you do with it?

If cheated in business dealings by some company, I will take the following steps to protect my own in terests: Obtain a copy of the related documents recording the business dealings between that dishonest

company and me; engage an attorney to suit that target company if necessary. And possibly I may det ermine to report the whole thing to the media. Anyway, I will not keep silent tut rather to take actions t o defend myself.

6.It is said there is no businessman who is not treacherous in making money. Do you agree?

No, definitely not. Society in general has seen a trend away from ethical and honest behavior, and mod ern business practices are no exception. Good work is overlooked and those who have a slicker approac h are rewarded. However, those treacherous businessmen will certainly be uncovered soon or later for c ustomers can not be cheated for ever. If a responsible businessman really expects a thriving career in t he long run, he has no choice but to follow the best policy to treat his customer ethically and honestly.

Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:

Discuss with your classmates the ways to make business relationships more humane and ethical.

(1)HONESTY

if you expect to have any further business deals with that person, or with any other. You don’t want to risk getting a reputation as a dishonest person in business. Short cuts and sharp dealings to quick succ ess may make great fodder for novels and movies, but are not smart practices on which to build a succe ssful business. The role models of “greed is good” and “have I got a deal for you,” can lead you to failur e.

Unit 6 Psychological Health

Part I Read the following passage aloud.

A dreadful thought, perhaps — particularly if working for a living has never agreed with you. But epid emiological analyses of every variety have long concluded that men who retire early don’t live as long as men who keep working late into geezerhood.

Given the opportunity to fill our days with nothing but recreational activity, we get in trouble — get b eaned by a shanked golf ball, fall off a fishing boat after a beer too many, that kind of thing. Anything that removes us too much from the nurturing world of women is simply bad for our health. That’s not t o say that we don’t suffer some ill effects from work. Men are the victims of more than 90 percent of all job-related accidents. Our highly competitive instincts also propel us to advance in our professions and climbing the ladder can be stressful (although interestingly, most CEO’s are in excellent health; they’re h ighly resilient, born leaders). Any job in which the tasks are slightly beyond our reach is going to caus e stress — along with the high blood pressure, depressed immunity and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. But, then, raising children is stressful. Unemployment is really stressful. Vacations can be stress ful. Driving in Milan is even a nightmare.

The point is that, in terms of the picture, not working, whether by choice or not, is worse for us than working. This has always been true, but now there are some modern wrinkles on this truism that reflect changing gender roles.

Part II. TOPIC Psychological Health

Section One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Psychological Health”.

1.What kind of person do you think is a healthy person?

To be start, he should have a strong body, with few disease. Second,he has a healthy life habit, such as waking up early and going to bed on time. The last but not the least,

he is supposed to have a good psychology.

2.What is depression? Do you know anyone who suffers from depression? How does he(she) suffer?

Depression is a “whole-body” illness, involving your body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself, and the way you think about things, depression can cha nges in think, feeling behavior, and physical well-being. People who suffered from depression, they ca n’t sleep well, depressed mood, poor memory, weight loss, and difficult to work.

1.What advice would you give to someone who feels depressed?

There are many ways. First you can change your attitude and be optimistic,

second learn to relax, you can do sports, chatting with friends or see a funny movie. Third ask for help, or develop friendship, shout loudly.

1.What usually causes you to be stressful as a student?

There are many things. For example, financial difficulties and you shy to ask your parents for money. Lack of confidence. Focus on the issues like online games. Spend too much time on study.

1.Do you think sports do much good to one’s psychological health?

Yes being a sports fan is also beneficial to one’s psychological health. As we have learned from passa ge a, football fans suffer fewer bouts of depression than people who never watch the match. An intense in a team can starve off depression and foster feeling of self-worth and belongings.

6.Are psychological problems inherited or acquired? Do you think those who have “blue genes” can live

a happy life?

I think they are acquired. As we all know,

the environment that children live is important. Children always learn from others. If the people around the children are optimistic, mostly, the children will be optimistic,

too . or the children will get psychological problems easily. I think if a person have a warm family and many friends. Even if he has “blue genes”, he can live a happy life.

Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic:

Psychological problems are common among college students. For example, some of them have great tro uble concentrating on study, some of them don’t feel much like eating and thus lose much weight, som e feel irritated and often have fights with their friends, while others suffer more bouts of depression and alienation.

Please discuss the causes of these problems and see whether you can find some solutions to them.

First there are too much temptation the outside. For example, Focus on the issues like online games and appearance. Second they lack of confidence, so always feel stressful. Then all problems take place. Third maybe love affairs. As we all know , lovelorn makes people angry easily.

Solution: 1. change your attitude and be optimistic. The world will not come to an end just because of y our failure in one exam.

2. learn to relax. Engage in some other activities to rest tour nerves. Doing sports, chatting with f riends, seeing a movie or listen to music are good ways to reduce stress.

3. ask for help. Talk with your family or friends and seek advice. They will share your pain and off er you great support.

4. do some sports

5.promote one’s sense of well-being

6. foster feelings of self-worth and belongs.

Unit 1 Men and women’s prejudices Part I Read the following passage aloud. The very language we use to discuss men’s roles (i.e., deadbeat dads) shows a lack of appreciation for the majority of men who quietly yet proudly fulfill their family responsibilities. We almost never hear the term “working father,” and it is rare that calls for more workplace flexibility are considered to be for men as much as for women. Our society acts as if family obligations are not as important to fathers as they are to mothers —as if career satisfaction is what a man’s life is all about. Even more insulting is the recent media trend of regarding at-home wives as “status symbols” — like an expensive car — flaunted by the supposedly few men who can afford such a luxury. The implication is that men with at-home wives have it easier than those whose wives work outside the home because they have the “luxury” of a full-time housekeeper. In reality, however, the men who are the sole wage earners for their families suffer a lot of stresses. The loss of a job — or even the threat of that happening — is obviously much more difficult when that job is the sole source of income for a family. By the same token, sole wage earners have less flexibility when it comes to leaving unsatisfying careers because of the loss of income such a job change entails. In addition, many husbands work overtime or second jobs to make more money needed for their families. For these men, it is the family that the job supports that makes it all worthwhile. It is the belief that having a mother at home is important to the children, which makes so many men gladly take on the burden of being a sole wage earner. Part II. TOPIC Men and women’s prejudices Section One Each of the students will be asked one qu estion on the topic “Men and women’s prejudices and roles”. 1.What’s the division of labor like in your family? In my family, my father is responsible for the heavy and tired work like clean drain, garage, etc., the mother is responsible for some of the common household chores, such as cooking, washing clothes, cleaning, etc.I am responsible for helping my mother to do the housework, so dad is hard and tired. 1.Many people hold the view that men are different from women in many ways. What’s your opinion about it? Men and women are different. In the relationship, for example, men are more rational, while women are more emotional. And because the body structure is different, the responsibility of the men and women is different also, men generally responsible for the breadwinner, women generally responsible for providing a comfortable home. 1.How to be a good father?

Whenever Mr. Smith goes to Westgate, he stays at the Grand Hotel. In spite of its name, it is really not very "grand," but it is cheap, clean, and comfortable. Since he knows the manager well, he never has to go to the trouble of reserving a room. The fact is that he always gets the same room. It is situated at the far end of the building and overlooks a beautiful bay. On his last visit, Mr. Smith was told that he could have his usual room, but the manager added apologetically that it might be a little noisy. So great was the demand for rooms, the manager said, that the hotel had decided to build a new wing. Mr. Smith said he did not mind. It amused him to think that the dear old Grand Hotel was making an effort to live up to its name. During the first day Mr. Smith hardly noticed the noise at all. The room was a little dusty, but that was natural. The following afternoon, he borrowed a book from the hotel library and went upstairs to read. No sooner had he sat down than he heard someone hammering loudly at the wall. At first he paid no attention, but after a while he began to feel very uncomfortable. His clothes were slowly being covered with fine white powder. Soon there was so much dust in the room that he began to cough. The hammering was now louder than ever and bits of plaster were coming away from the walls. It looked as though the whole building was going to fall. 口语考试题目含答案

大学英语听说IV级口语考试题目(十三周考试用) 1.Some people like to travel with a companion. Other people prefer to travel alone. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice. If you were to travel, would you want to be with a companion or alone? Some might say they would want to travel alone. However, I have an opposite opinion. I think it is better to travel with a companion for the following reasons, they can give us information about the place, we won’t feel boring if we travel together, and we can have opportunities to meet more people through a companion. People travel around some places to get information about the specific areas. To get the information about the place, we need a guide. If we hire a guide, we should pay money and we will somewhat not be free to go anywhere. Despite that, if we travel with friends, they could tell us about it as a guide. We can save money and get some information about the place that we visit. In addition, we could be free to go anywhere we want. As t o the second point, if we travel with friends, we wouldn’t fell tedious while traveling. We can talk to each other and get chances to know each other more. On the other hand, traveling alone could make us feel down because it is quite boring to hang around by themselves. Thus, I would prefer traveling with a companion to alone. Besides, the second point, if we travel with a companion, we can get more opportunities to meet other people through my friends. For example, when I was 10 years old, I went to china. I have met a lot of people through my friend there and I’m still keeping in touch with them. If I didn’t go to china with my friend, I could have not met them in my life. This is the final reason why I think it is better to travel with friends rather alone. To conclude, some people might say it is better to travel alone because it might interrupt us if we travel with a companion. Nevertheless, I think it would be better to travel with a companion for the previous reasons, they can tell us some information about the place, we can enjoy more because it’s not boring, and we could get opportunities to meet many people through friends. 2.Some people like to do only what they already do well. Other people prefer to try new things and take risks. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice. Many people like to do things that they already do well, many others like to take risks to do things new. Both sides are supported by good reasons. For my part, I think it depends on what kind of things that people in the face of. I prefer to do things that I already do well when I should do things to benefit the others. On the other hand, I would like to take risks to try something new in order to improve myself, that means I will be the person who benefit from what I do. People are all live in the society and have relationships with each other. So what one do can influence the others directly or indirectly. In this case, people should do their best to benefit and convenient for the others. If one does not have enough experience and skills to do things well, the people around them maybe complain or they will ruin their plan. Is it very nice to share their own risks to the others to get more experience for themselves? Absolutely not. The society or the small
