Merchant ships are designed to carry cargo. Some are also designed to carry passengers. They can operate as liners. These are employed on regular routes on a fixed timetable. A list of their arrival and departure dates is published in advance and they sail whether full or not. Liners can be classed as either deep-sea liners or short-sea liners. The former carry mainly containerized cargo across the oceans of the world; the later carry containerized or conventional cargo on shorter routes. Ferries are also classed as liners. These offer a daily or weekly service for passengers and vehicles across channels and narrow seas. A few ships are still employed as passenger liners. They not only carry passengers but also some cargo on routes from Europe to North America and to the Far East. Nowadays the passenger trade is very small and passenger liners usually operate as cruise ships for part of the year.

Nowadays, most merchant ships are built to carry cargoes. And they mainly operate as tramps. These vessels do not sail on regular routes or keep to a fixed timetable, but are employed where there is cargo for them to carry. Tramps can be classed as deep-sea tramps or short-sea tramps. A number are classed as coasters. These ply on coastal routes and up rivers to inland ports. The traditional tramp cargoes are dry bulk cargoes, but some are designed to carry general cargoes.

A large number of merchant ships operate as specialized vessels. These are designed to carry a particular type of cargo. There are several types of specialized vessel. The most common are oil tankers. They are owned by the major oil companies or by independent operators. Two other types of liquid bulk carrier of growing importance are chemical carriers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

Cargo ships can be divided into two basic types. One type carries dry cargo, the other carries liquid cargo; however,an OBO ship is designed to carry both. A traditional dry cargo ship is the multi-deck vessel. Her holds are divided horizontally by one or two 'tween decks, because these make stowage of individual packages easier. Dry bulk cargo is carried in bulk carriers. These do not have 'tween decks as cargo is carried loose. The most modern type of dry cargo carrier is the container ship. They carry containers of standard dimensions, consequently stowage is easier. Fruit, meat and dairy produce are carried in refrigerated ships. Oil tankers are the most common type of liquid cargo carrier. They are often very large, because huge quantities of oil need to be transported and one large vessel is more economical to operate than two smaller ones. Two other types of liquid bulk carrier of growing importance are the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier and the chemical carrier, although chemical can also be carried in drums in general cargo ships.

009.There are ________ types of liquid bulk carrier.

The container ship is different from the conventional type and is an innovation noted for easier handling and quicker turnover of cargoes. Cargoes to be carried by this type of ship are pre-packed into containers before being loaded aboard the ship. Containers are sealed after being packed with cargoes. Made of metal or other durable materials, they are watertight after sealing and can therefore be stowed on deck whilst being carried. One of the features of container ships is that some of the containers are usually stowed on deck.

The container ship is becoming increasingly popular in trading circles, and the trend is that the tonnage thereof will grow at a faster pace in future.

025.What does "innovation" in the first paragraph mean? ________.

A. making changes

B. the introduction of an antigenic substance into the body against a specific disease

C. The act of introducing something new.

D. revolution

The bulk carrier, long recognized as the workhorse of the world merchant fleet, has over the years had its design refined and optimized on the basis of previous successful experience. This provided what many considered to be a relatively uncomplicated and safe structural configuration.

Recently, and regrettably with loss of human lives,a series of tragic ship losses has focused the attention of the marine industry and the public on the performance and inherent safety of this ship type.

Extensive research and development, principally by the major classification societies, has highlighted the possible causes of the bulk carrier losses and brought about necessary changes to the design and scantlings for new ships. For existing ships, improvements to safety are anticipated through the reinforcement of the aft transverse watertight bulkhead, and the double bottom structure in way,of the foremost cargo hold, the introduction of a more rigorous survey regime and greater attention to operating procedures, particularly during cargo loading and discharge,in order to avoid over stressing of the structure or mechanical damage.

145.In this paragraph,the term "workhorse" means ________.

A. the ship that performs dependably in marine industries

B. a horse that is used for labor rather than for racing or riding.

C. a person who works tirelessly, especially at difficult or time-consuming tasks.

D. something that performs dependably under heavy or prolonged use

146.The refined and optimized design of bulk carriers, considered by many people,________.

A. is relatively uncomplicated and safe in their structural configuration

B. is relatively complicated compared with previous structural configuration

C. is relatively not safe on the basis of previous successful experience.

D. will join world fleet recently

147.The ________ is not included in the anticipated improvements to safety for existing bulkships.

A. introduction of a more rigorous survey regime and greater attention to operating procedures

B. introduction of necessary changes to the design and scantlings

C. reinforcement of the aft transverse watertight bulkhead

D. reinforcement of the double bottom structure in way

148.It is implied that a series of tragic bulkship losses ________.

A. will not be avoided even new design of their structure are introduced

B. were contributed by the improvements to safety for existing ships

C. has little effect on the marine industry and the public

D. were caused by their inherent structures

Modern bulk carriers are normally designed to carry a variety of cargoes in order to provide operational flexibility. For cargoes such as coal or grain the ship would have all holds filled with the cargo (homogeneous loading condition) and be down to maximum draught. If heavy cargoes, with a stowage rate of about one third of that for coal were to be carried in the homogeneous condition each hold would only be about one third full. In that condition the ship would have a large metacentric height and a low centre of gravity resulting in a very "stiff" ship. Modern bulk carriers, intended for the carriage of ore,are designed for the carriage of ore cargoes in alternate holds and in larger ships only the odd numbered holds are loaded with ore. The advantages in this are that it is easier to achieve a satisfactory trim on the ship and a reduced time spent in port. However, the disadvantages are that the alternate hold loading pattern greatly increases the stresses in the double bottom structure and the shear forces in the side shell. The double bottom, hopper and topside tanks are arranged for the carriage of water ballast with the double bottom and hopper tanks often being inter-connected,by vertical trunks or pipes, with the topside tanks.

157.The homogeneous loading condition refers to loading pattern that ________.

A. all cargo holds are fully loaded to the maximum of both volume and weight capacities

B. each hold would only be about one third full

C. only the odd numbered holds are loaded

D. all cargo holds are loaded with cargoes

158."Stiff" ship is the condition that ________.

A. she has a large metacentric height

B. she has a high centre of gravity

C. her metacenter above baseline is low

D. her centre of gravity is moderate

159.The ________ are not arranged for the carriage of ballast water.

A. double bottom tanks

B. topside tanks

C. hopper tanks

D. vertical trunks or pipes

160.The disadvantage of the alternate hold loading pattern is that ________.

A. it is easier to achieve a satisfactory trim on the ship

B. it increases the stresses in the double bottom structure and the shear forces in the side shell

C. it is easier to achieve a reduced time spent in port

D. the double bottom and hopper tanks are often inter-connected,by vertical trunks or pipes, with the topside tanks

Many carriers today make use of relay ports at which goods destined for more remote locations are transshipped onto substituted ships or "feeder vessels",in order to secure faster and more efficient delivery than would be possible if the cargoes concerned were carried all the way to destination aboard the liner vessels on which they were first loaded. The transshipment of cargo at such intermediate ports has been judged not to constitute an unreasonable deviation where it is shown to be a custom of the trade. Nor,of course,is it an unreasonable deviation where the shipper acquiesced in it,had notice of it or could have expected it based on prior shipments with the same carrier,or where the carrier has made known its ordinary stops by its advertisements, publications or other means.

181.A Relay Port means a/an_______.

A. port of destination

B. port of sailing

C. intermediate port

D. port of refuge

182.Cargo will be possibly delivered slower to its destination by _______.

A. a feeder

B. a substituted ship

C. the liner on which it was first loaded

D. the liner on which it would be loaded should a feeder or substituted ship not be available

183.Under which of the following conditions is it not sufficient to judge that transshipment at the relay port does not constitute an unreasonable deviation ? _______.

A. the transshipment is shown to be a custom of the trade

B. the shipper had notice of the transshipment

C. the shipper could have expected it based on prior shipments with the same carrier

D. the carrier has not made known its ordinary stops by its advertisements or publications

184.The purpose of making use of a relay port by the carrier is to achieve the end of _______.

A. faster and more efficient delivery

B. avoiding unreasonable deviation

C. making known its ordinary transportation by its advertisements, publications or other means

D. preventing the adverse influence to the carriage by a custom of the trade

一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 A great number of species make their home in the vast waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Although the entire ocean makes up an ecosystem, many smaller habitats are found within, including an open-water habitat off the coast of the Northern Atlantic Ocean known as the Sargasso Sea. Sargassum is an alga(海藻) that floats in masses that can continue for miles. The waters of the Gulf Stream push the water in a northward move into this area. This constant move and varying temperature support the accumulation of the brown-colored seaweed. The Sargasso Sea is so enormous that one method of information collection has not been enough for scientists to obtain an accurate picture of what takes place within this ecosystem. Researchers have needed to employ several methods of sampling. Methods such as dragging nets over the surface of the water and videotaping beneath areas of sargassum have served scientists well. Information collected has shown that the Gulf Stream pushes brown algae from open water into the Sargasso Sea area, creating a diverse floating habitat in an area that would otherwise not support that wildlife. In the most recent study of the sargassum community off the shores of North Carolina, eighty-one fish species were documented as using the area as a microhabitat. This is an increase from previous studies. The types of fish found here are both commercially and environmentally important. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is working to regulate the harvesting of sargassum. The Council hopes to have the area classified as an Essential Fish Habitat. Which would afford it certain protections. Further research needs to be done before scientists understand how to best protect the Sargasso Sea as well as understand how it goes about supporting so many important types of wildlife. (1)The author uses "enormous" in paragraph 2 to stress that . A. the Atlantic Ocean is really amazing in terms of its size and area B. what the researchers do is highly respected by scientific community C. the research work is complex because a large area must be covered D. a large amount of money for the Sargasso Sea research is needed (2)It can be inferred from the phrase "needed to be done" in paragraph 4 that the author thinks . A.the Sargasso ecosystem is worth our attention and needs more study B.the scientific community has ignored this complex ecosystem C.the Sargasso Sea is becoming a problem and needs removing D.new methods for researching the ecosystem must be found instantly (3)The text is mainly about . A.diversity of wildlife in the Atlantic Ocean B.different habitats of sea animals C.methods of information collection D.the Sargasso Sea as an entire ecosystem

There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hor- mones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etC.In general the person feels excited and ready to act. Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.” Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析

高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.
