people who seriously read a newspaper every day . most people read only the sports pages, the advice or the gossip columns , the comics ,and perhaps the classified advertisements . most people don’t take the time to read the real news . they attempt to catch the reader’s interest with picture and exiting headlines. At present, Specialization has become an increasing important factor in a great many careers. You find these careers in engineering, in production, in statistical work, and in teaching. But there is an increasing demand for people who are able to take in a great area at a glance, people who perhaps do not know too much about any one field. There is, in other words, a demand for people who are capable of seeing the forest rather than the trees, of making general judgments. We can call these

people “ generalists ” . And these “ generalists ” are particularly needed for positions in administration, where it is their job to see that other people do the work, where they have to plan for other people, to organize other people ' s work, to begin it and judge it.

The specialist underst ands one field; his concern is with technique and tools. He is a “ trained ” man; and his educational background is properly technical or professional. The generalists and especially the administrator deal with people; his concern is with leadership, with planning, and with direction giving. He is an “ educated ” man; and the humanities are his strongest foundation. Very rarely is a specialist capable of being an administrator. And very rarely is a good generalist also a good specialist in a particular field. Any organization needs both kinds of people, though different organizations need them in different proportions. It is your task to find out, during your training period, into which of the two kinds of jobs you fit, and to plan your career accordingly. Your first job may turn out to be the right job for you but this is pure accident. Certainly you should not change jobs constantly or people will become suspicious of your ability to hold any job. At the same time, you must not look upon the first job as the final job; it is primarily a training job, an opportunity to understand yourself and your fitness for being an employee.

56. There is an increasing demand for ________.

A. all round people in their own fields

B. people whose job is to organize other people ' s work

C. people whose educational background is either technical or professional

D. specialists whose chief concern is to provide administrative guidance to others

57. The specialist is ________.

A. a man whose job is to train other people

B. a man who has been trained in more than one field

C. a man who can see the forest rather than the trees

D. a man whose concern is mainly with technical or professional matters

58. The administrator is ________.

A. a “ trained ” man who is more a spec ialist than a generalist

B. a man who sees the trees as well as the forest

C. a man who is very strong in the humanities

D. a man who is an “ educated ” specialist

59. During your training period, it is important ________.

A. to try to be a generalist

B. to choose a profitable job

C. to find an organization which fits you

D. to decide whether you are fit to be a specialist or a generalist

60. A man ' s first job ________.

A. is never the right job for him

B. should not be regarded as his final job

C. should not be changed or people will become suspicious of his ability to hold any job

D. is primarily an opportunity to fit himself for his final job

Owing to the traditional Grammar-focused, teacher-centered and test-based classes in China, English is thought to be something dry and abstract or a subject similar to any other subject that the students are learning. What the students need to do at class is just to concentrate their attention on the teacher’s lecture, which always focuses on vocabulary and grammar explanation. As a result, many students can’t open their mouths to speak English despite they have learned English for several years. A national survey in 15 provinces and cities by the State Education Commission in 1986 revealed that most middle-school leavers found it hard to communicate even in simple English after spending 900 hours in English class. (1)

With China’s entry to WTO, English is becoming a hit in China. As is reported, nearly 100 million Chinese elementary and secondary school students, apart from English learners from other walks of life, are learning English.

Foreign languages are important tools that people use to take in fruit of foreign civilizations and

communicate for international co-operation. It is an indispensable basic skill for modern humans.

(2) So the purpose of learning English is to use it. In another word, English should be a tool that people use to communicate. A Teacher-centered Class or a Student-centered Class?

The passage above mainly talks about the existing education system failing to achieve final goals of English teaching in china , and that how to learn English efficiently is an urgent task to all of us .

A teacher-centered class is a typical traditional passive class. There are several characteristics in this kind of class. To begin with, a teacher is the only actor on the stage and all the students are passive audience. Besides, a teacher is never bothering to ignite the sparks or enthusiasm in students. Therefore, the class is often like a pond of dead water.

In contrast, a student-centered class is a kind of new active class. The first characteristic of this kind of class is that the teacher and students are all actors and all the students are actively involved in the classroom activities. The second is that the teacher always tries to instill(慢慢灌输)a love of learning in students and stimulate their interest. As a result, students always find it a pleasure to learn in class, by asking questions, discussing or even arguing with the teacher. Therefore, this kind of class is often like a boiling sea.

Moreover, I prefer an active student-oriented class not simply because it’s fun。Besides, it can develop my creative mind and my leaning ability.

③【亮点点击】

例如第二段的To begin with~~~ Besides,~~~~ Therefore~~~~

2 文章用比喻巧妙的形容了每个课堂的特点。

Therefore, the class is often like a pond of dead water. 和Therefore, this kind of class is often like

a boiling sea.

A Part A This is one of the greatest masterpieces of Chinese landscape painting. When westerners first discovered Chinese paintings like this one, they could not see their value. To understand painting, you need to understand calligraphy. The character is not a picture of an object in the real world, but a symbol for an idea. As Chinese characters are symbols for ideas, so elements in a Chinese landscape, rocks, water, trees and mountains, became symbols of concepts. For the Chinese, pictures painted with a brush are symbols that carry both the surface meaning and additional hidden meanings. Chinese paintings are not just pretty pictures. They mean something. Part B 视频对话 W: Good afternoon, Dr. Brown. We are very honored to have you with us today. M: Thanks for inviting me, Mary. W: We know that you have been studying sleep and health for many years. M: Yes, I started my research in 2010. W: I know that good sleep makes me feel better, but I am not so sure about the specific health benefits of good sleep. M: Well, recently I have published a book named Sleep and Health. According to my research, good sleep benefits our mind, weight, heart and more. Yet, few of us realize that. Now more and more people, including young students, are having sleep problems. 1. 学生是如何受到睡眠影响的? How are students affected by sleep? 电脑回答For children between the ages of 10 and 16, if they haven’t got enough sleep, they are more likely to have problems with attention and learning. College students who don’t get enou gh sleep have worse grades than those who do. So don’t sacrifice sleep even if you are trying to meet a deadline. Get a good sleep and you might get a good score. 2. 睡眠好还有其他什么好处吗? Is there any other benefit of good sleep? 电脑回答Well, good sleep also helps you have a healthy weight. If you are thinking about going on a diet, you might need to plan an earlier bed time. People tend to feel more hungry and eat more when they get less sleep. Researchers find that dieter who sleep well lose more fat than those don’t. 3. 那意味着我们应该多睡觉吗? Does that mean we should sleep more? 电脑回答Well, it depends. Too much or too little sleep is associated with a shorter lifespan. But sleep surely affects the quality of life. If you sleep better, you will certainly live better. It’s pre tty clear. 1. When did Dr. Brown start his research on sleep and health? He started it in 2010. 2. What is the name of Dr. Brown’s book? Sleep and Health. 3. What is Dr. Brown’s suggestion for students who are trying to meet a deadline? Do not sacrifice sleep. 4. Why do people need to plan an earlier bed time if they go on a diet?
