Many large cities have a subway system. The subway is called Tube in London. In San Francisco, it is called BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Some subway systems, like Chicago s, are quite old. It opened in 1897. Others are more recent. For example, Mexico City's subway started in 1969.
Most subways are very modern and clean, but sometimes they get very crowded. So people have to follow certain rules to make the trip more comfortable. In London, when people use the tube, they must stand on the right so that people in a hurry can walk on the left. They let passengers get off the train before others get on, and people are expected to give their seats to the old and disabled people.
Some subways provide excellent services. In most subways, there is a station about every one kilometer. Trains arrive at a station about every two minutes. Subways carry a lot of passengers. The number of people traveling one way each hour in London can be about 30,000. In some other cities it is much higher. Hong Kong's subway holds the record of about 80,000 passengers an hour!

To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades, and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no teachers, only "staff members"(工作人员). The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. "You do not need to say to a three-year-old. 'Go explore your environment.' You can't stop them!" says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. "But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning."
At Sudbruy Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!
The other way that Sudbruy Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each - even the four-year-old. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget(预算) , and even which staff they want and do not want any more.
When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.

The expression down to earth" means being open and honest. It is easy to get on with someone who is down to earth. A down-to-earth person is the opposite of someone who acts important or proud.
Down-to-earth people could be important members of society. But they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. A person who is filled with his own importance and pride is said to have his nose in the air.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down to earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of real world. He may have dreams, but he does not allow them to have influence on his understanding of what is real.
The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a day-dreamer.
When we have both our feet on the ground, and when we are down to earth, we do not have our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly to others. Our lives are like the ground below us solid(牢固的)and strong.
