A

People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly(不顾一切地)up and down America’s main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn’t forget that there are hard moments i n the life of a teenager too.

I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman’s funeral. I didn’t expect the event to affect me. Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved.

The teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began: “I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would truly attract her, what would Nana say? ‘oh, what beautiful barking that dog has!’ That was Nana. ”

“She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for my grandpa’s career,” he said, with a voice now trembling, “That was Nana’s way.”

Through a low sob, he continued, “Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you’d have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to show off.”

Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, “Nana taught me courage. She put up an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana’s way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner.”

There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven’t learned to be controlled.

When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest and dearest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ceremony . He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and

death.

All over again we felt those powerful losses crossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself. And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.

Surprisingly, no one knows how many children receive education in English hospitals, still less the content or quality of that education. Proper records are just not kept. We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each year, and that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital.

Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher. A further quarter have only a part-time teacher. The special children’s hospitals in major cities do best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off. From this survey, one can estimate that fewer than one in five children have some contact with a hospital teacher—and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. They had not been prepared for it by parents or their own school. If there was a teacher they were much

more likely to read books and do math or number work; without a teacher they would only play games.

Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and maintaining the habit of school to keeping a child occupied, and the latter is often all the teacher can do. The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents referred to them as “the library lady” or just “the helper”. Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work. Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school. Once back at school children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as best they can.

Many short-stay child-patients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.

61. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Every child in hospital receives some teaching.

B. Not enough is known about hospital teaching.

C. Hospital teaching is of poor quality.

D. The special children's hospitals are worst off.

62. It can be inferred from the latest survey that________.

A. hospital teaching across the country is similar

B. each hospital has at least one part-time teacher

C. all hospitals surveyed offer education to children

D. only one-fourth of the hospitals have a full-time teacher

63. The hospital teachers are found________.

A. not welcomed by the children and their parents

B. unnecessary

C. not quite helpful

D. capable

64. In order to catch up with their school work, children in hospital usually turn to________.

A. hospital teachers

B. schoolmates

C. parents

D. school teachers

65. We can conclude from the passage that the author is________.

A. unfavorable towards children receiving education in hospitals

B. in favor of the present state of teaching in hospitals

C. unsatisfied with the present state of hospital teaching

D. satisfied with the results of the latest survey

Part 1V Writing (45 marks)

Section A (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for

each answer.

A professor of environmental health and his students began studying the idea of rooftop garde ning for cities. “I think vertical farming is an idea that can work in a big way,” said Despommier.

Why would we want to build skyscrapers filled with vegetables when we’ve been farming on the ground for 10,000 years? Because as the world’s population grows — from 6.8 billion now to as much as 9 billion by 2050 — we could run out of productive soil and water. Most of the population growth will occur in cities that can’t easily feed themselves. And the fact that modern agriculture and everything associated with it —chemical fertilizers and transportation full of carbon —is a significant contributor to climate change, and suddenly vertical farming doesn’t seem so magic one in the sky.

“Vertical farming could allow food to be grown locally and sustainably,” says Glen Kertz, CEO of Valcent. The result saves space —vital in urban areas--- and allows farmers to irrigate and fertilize with far less waste.

At Valcent’s El Paso lab, crops grow in rows on conveyor belts. Moving them gives the plants the precise amount of light and nutrients needed, letting them grow 15 times as much vegetable as on a normal farm with 5% of the water that traditional agriculture does.

Dedspommier plans to build a 30-story, city-block-size vertical farm that would have transparent walls to maximize sunlight and would produce enough food for 50,000 people. But it would cost hundreds of millions to build a full-scale skyscraper farm. That’s the main drawback: construction and energy costs would probably make vertically raised food more costly than traditional crops.

information given in the passage.

The importance of water is well explained through the saying “Water is life”. Healthy living starts with proper and safe drinking water. There are two types of drinking water -bottled water and tap water. Bottled water is water kept in bottles and sold in the market for drinking purposes. Tap water, also referred to as running water, is the common household water.

There is a heated discussion as to whether bottled water is safer than tap water for drinking purposes. The level of contamination in tap water varies depending upon the country. To get an understanding about which is better, let’s go through the comparison of bottled water and tap water.

The basic issue is the affordability; tap water is much cheaper than bottled water. So for many people, difference in price is the major consideration.

In 1999, it was found that the quality of bottled water was the same as tap water. In fact, more than 25 percent of bottled water was tap water kept in bottles. Campaigns were organized in order to make the public aware of the fact, and limit the use of bottled water. The use of bottled water results in several environmental issues. It is a fact that for making one liter of bottled water, more than six liters of water is required, thereby resulting in water wastage. Though, the bottles can be sent for plastic recycling, many are dumped in trash bins. Due to these reasons, environmentalists strongly oppose the use of bottled water.

81. What’s the other name of tap water? (no more than 3 words)

82. Why do most people like to drink tap water? (no more than 6 words)

The importance of communication

We can see from the picture that just beside the door, two men are holding a heavy box. They are very tired, with sweat pouring down from their faces. Though each of them makes great efforts to move the box, it still stays at the same place, for they have opposite opinions in their minds. One thinks that it should be carried out of the room, while the other considers that it should be carried in.

If they share their opinions, they can reach an agreement and work together to move the box much more easily and save a lot of time and energy. The problem is common among us teenagers………………………………………………(略)So good communication is the first step towards effective work.
