One terribly cold day, a snowstorm hit our area. Needing firewood, I quickly set out with my best friend, Bruce, to look for a tree to cut down. Cutting down a tree in a snowstorm can be dangerous. So it was important to have a friend who could warn me of dangers.

When I chose a big 23-meter-tall tree and prepared to cut it down, Bruce suddenly warned me, “Don’t cut down that tree! It’s too close to the power line!” I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided to disregard his warning. I couldn’t wait to finish the job and go back home. I began cutting down the tree. When the tree fell, there was no longer any doubt whether my friend was right.

The tree caught the power line, bringing it to the ground. I considered cutting the tree off the line. After all, electricity can’t travel through wood. As I reached out my finger to touch the tree, pain ran up my arm and through my head. I had been shocked!

After I returned home and told my mother what happened, she quickly called the power company. Workers from the power company soon arrived. One of them asked if I had touched the tree, and when I told him I had, his face turned pale. “You should have been killed,” he said. It was my boots that saved my life.

Within two hours, the workers removed the tree. Soon the snowstorm calmed down---but not my mother. Even though she was glad that I wasn’t hurt, my mother was still serious with me. After all(毕竟), I shouldn’t have brushed off my friend’s w arning.

If you’re ever apart from your children, a new study says just talking on the phone will help just as much as a hug.

If you’re a parent who spends long hours on the job, you probably feel sorry for spending so much time away from your kids. But the results of a new study show that a mother’s voice alone can be just as comforting to an anxious child as physical contact.

In an experiment, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison asked a group of girls between the age of 7 and 12 to solve math problems in front of judges ---a stressful situation for anyone. Before the girls were set to solve math problems, the researchers measured their levels of two hormones(荷尔蒙):cortisol, which goes up during stressful periods, and oxytocin, the “love” hormone, which goes down at the same time.

After they were finished, some of the girls got to meet up with their mothers right away. The mums came in and hugged the girls.Another group of the girls didn’t see their mothers, but received phone calls from them, in which their mothers told them how well they’d done. The final group had no contact with their mothers, but watched an animal movie, March of the Penguins instead.

Finally, the girls’ hormone levels were measured again.although the movie was interesting, it did noting to ease the children’s anxiety – but, surprisingly, both the physical contact and phone calls from their mothers had the same effect on easing the girls’ stress levels. So, no matter how old you are, if you’re feeling stressed about something in your life,

a phone call to Mom might be just the key to help you feel better.

Teens want structure in their lives, which means they want their lives well-planned. To begin building structure, teens need love and trust. They need to know their parents arc there to give them needed love and support (支持).Teens want to be sure that nothing can prevent parents from shouldering their responsibility for them —not their growing maturity (成熟),misbehavior, nor anger at something they have done. Teens want parents to keep control while allowing them to make some decisions.

There are some ways you can help your teens create reasonable structure and remain close. One way is to spend time together.Parents often mistake their teens’ increased interest in friends for a disinterest in the family. Teens would like to spend more time doing things with their parents, but watching TV is not counted as spending time together. As your teens mature, it is important for you and your teens spend time alone together, one to one. Your teens need time to talk to you alone without any other family member present.

Talk with your teens about their interests and concerns.Make sure you really show interest in what is happening. When talking with your teens, give full attention and do not stop them.

The way to help your teens become adults is to let your teens into your world. Sharing your emotions and concerns with your teens is important. Avoid causing needless worry.

Trust your teens. Don't expect the worst. Hope for the best. Telling your teens you don’t like their friends will cause the teens not to bring their friends home. If something should go wrong, believe that your teens didn’t do it on purpose.

It is very important that you treat your teens with respect. Teens need the same respect adults show for total strangers. Don’t talk down to your teens.

You need to be supportive o f your teens. What may be a small problem to you may be troubling to your teens. Teens don't have the experiences that adults have had. Let the teens know that you understand how much it hurts when something happens that is upsetting or hurtful to them. As they mature, they can look back at some problems they had and laugh at having been upset by something that now seems unimportant.

The most important things to remember are: talk with your teens, listen to their worries and offer suggestions when needed. This will help your teens to live a well-organized life.

1. According to paragraph 1, teens ______________.

A. can control themselves .

B. expect direction and freedom .

C. don’t know how to make decision

D. don’t have r esponsibility for the family

2. The underline part “counted as” in p aragraph 3 probably means “_______”.

A. compared with

B. used as

C. connected with

D. regarded as

3. To help teens organize their lives , parents should __________.

A. invit e their teens’ friends home

B. leave their teens’ problems alone

C. share their feelings with their teens

D. pay little attention to their teens’ daily lives

4. What is the best title of the passage ?

A. Training Teens to Become Responsible Adults .

B. Helping Teens to Build Reasonable Structure .

Everyone knows that pulling an all-nighter is a bad idea in general, but sometimes an all-night

work or study period is unavoidable. If you have to pull an all-nighter, here are some tips for you.

Take a Shower

Showers are great for helping you wake up in the morning. If you are really sleepy, taking a shower will wake your body and mind, especially if you use shampoo and soap that smell like citrus(柑橘). The pleasant smell will energize your body and help stop you from feeling sleepy. Eat the Right Foods

Eat a small snack such a few slices of cheese or drink a glass of milk. Apples are also a great snack because they help to keep your blood sugar even. No matter what you eat, avoid eating a large amount of food at once. It is also a good idea to eat a light meal that contains lots of vegetables for dinner before your all-nighter.

Exercise

One of the easiest ways to avoid falling asleep during an all night is to keep moving. Many people fall asleep if they sit in one place for too long, but moving will keep them awake. You could try running in place, doing jumping jacks, or dancing to your favourite band. It doesn’t really matter how you move, as long as you avoid sitting still. It often works best to take a movement break for five to ten minutes every hour.

Switch Subjects Often

If you are bored with the task you are doing, you are likely to fall asleep. Try to switch tasks at least every hour so that you aren’t doing the same thing over and over. Your brain gets bored quickly, especially if you are already tired, so switching subjects gives you a break and allows you to break up the work you are completing into small parts. Making a list of everything you need to complete before morning and checking things off the list will help keep you motivated(积极的) to push through the tiredness and get your work done.

Just remember: staying awake all night is not healthy, and certainly not suggested, unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to pull an all-nighter, make sure that you take time off the next day to let your body and mind recover fully.

1. From the passage we can know that ______.

A. a pleasant smell may help stop us from feeling sleepy

B. sleeping for a short time can make us feel energetic

C. running in place is a better way of exercising at night

D. We feel sleepy and tired when we eat a light meal

2. What does the writer want to tell us in “Switch Subjects Often”?

A. Switching subjects can make it easier to finish your work.

B. The more often you switch subjects, the better results you’ll get.

C. You’re likely to fall asleep when the task you’re doing is interesting.

D. Making a list of everything you need to complete as early as possible.

3. What’s the writer’s attitude to “pulling an all-nighter”?

A. He feels it’s worth a try.

B. He thinks it’s important.

C. He doesn’t like it.

D. He thinks it’s amazing.

Assertiveness is the ability to confidently express your opinions, feelings, attitudes, and rights, in a way that doesn't infringe(侵犯) the rights of others.

Many of us are taught that it is not nice to consider our own needs above those of others. If someone says or does something that we don't like, we should just be quiet and try to stay away from that person in the future.

Why is Assertiveness important?

If you don't know how to be assertive, you might experience:

?Depression - Anger, a sense of being helpless, hopeless, or of having no control over your life.

?Resentment - Anger at others for taking advantage of you.

?Frustration - Why did I allow that to happen?

Most people find it easier to be assertive in some situations than in others. This makes perfect sense. It's a lot easier to hold your ground with a stranger than with someone you love. But the more important the relationship is to you, the more important it is to be assertive. Assertive behavior leads to increased respect from others!

But before you decide to act assertively, you have to decide if you can live with the results. Although assertive behavior usually will result in a positive response(积极的回应),some people might react differently.

How to be effectively(有效地) assertive:

?Use "I" statements. Keep the focus on the problem you're having. "I'd like to be able to tell my stories without interruption." instead of "You're always interrupting my stories ! "

?Use facts, not opinions. "Did you know that shirt has a hole?" instead of "You're not going out looking like THAT, are you?"

?Express ownership of your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. "I get angry when he breaks his promises. " instead of "He makes me angry. "

? Make clear and direct requirements. Don't invite the person to say no. "Will you please?" instead of 'Would you mind...?" or "Why don't you...?"

?Keep repeating your point. Use a low level and pleasant voice. Don't try to explain yourself.

1. The writer probably agrees that____________.

A. you should consider others' response before you act assertively

B. you should be assertive if you want to get good marks

C. assertiveness is the ability to infringe others' rights .

D. assertive behavior will bring you bad feelings

2. The expression "hold yourground" probably means “_________________”

A. reach an agreement

B. insist on your point

C. keep your word

D. keep on fighting

3. Which of the following helps you to be effectively assertive?

A. Explaining yourself in a soft and sweet voice.

B. Expressing ownership of others' thoughts.

C. Making requirements directly and clearly.

D. Using your opinions instead of facts.

阅读理解D专练5篇 Passage 1(2017江苏,D) Old Problem, New Approaches While clean energy is increasingly used in our daily life, global warming will continue for some decades after CO2 emissions(排放) peak. So even if emissions were to begin to decrease today, we would still face the challenge of adapting to climate change. Here I will stress some smarter and more creative examples of climate adaptation. When it comes to adaptation, it is important to understand that climate change is a process. We are therefore not talking about adapting to a new standard, but to a constantly shifting set of conditions. This is why, in part at least, the US National Climate Assessment says that:“There is no ‘one-size fits all’ adaptation.”Nevertheless, there are some actions that offer much and carry little risk or cost. Around the world, people are adapting in surprising ways, especially in some poor countries. Floods have become more damaging in Bangladesh in recent decades. Mohammed Rezwan saw opportunity where others saw only disaster. His not-for-profit organization runs 100 river boats that serve as floating libraries, schools, and health clinics, and are equipped with solar panels and other communicating facilities. Rezwan is creating floating connectivity(连接) to replace flooded roads and highways. But he is also working at a far more fundamental level:his staff show people how to make floating gardens and fish ponds to prevent starvation during the wet season. Elsewhere in Asia even more astonishing actions are being taken. Chewang Norphel lives in a mountainous region in India, where he is known as the Ice Man. The loss of glaciers(冰川) there due to global warming represents an enormous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel’s inspiration came from seeing the waste of water over winter, when it was not needed. He directed the wasted water into shallow basins where it froze, and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation(灌溉) water. Having created nine such ice reserves, Norphel calculates that he has stored about 200,000m3of water. Climate change is a continuing process, so Norphel’s ice reserves will not last forever. Warming will overtake them. But he is providing a few years during which the farmers will, perhaps, be able to find other means of adapting.

A To American visitors, Iceland is a very interesting country, partly because it is different in so many ways from what he or she is used to seeing at home. There are quite a few things that are not done, or that do not exist on the island —quite a few "No's". There is no pollution, for instance. No dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of black-and-white TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There are no handguns; only one jail of thirty-five cells in the entire land —an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people. There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanks to Gulf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees Fahrenheit to 52 degrees in July. The rules on television, liquor, and guns are the result of governmental decision. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser(间歇泉and the thousands of hot springs that come out of the ground. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact, Iceland uses only 3 percent of all its available power. Iceland has been described as a democratic independent country where more fish are caught and more books published per person than anywhere else in the world. The Icelanders have always felt a particular love for literature. They composed their first works in the ninth and tenth centuries AD. These works were poems and tales about the kings, heroes, and heroines of Iceland and Norway. At first the stories were memorized

Jenny was compiled in January 2021

Before a new type of airplane goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others. The first is called the “tank test". A modem airplane must fly very high in the sky. Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure (结构) of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure (压力) on a small window is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to fail, the plane would explode in the sky. To test the structure of the plane, the plane is lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is high up in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger. The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in the air. The test pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines (发动机) are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot’s job to find out how he can get control of the plane again. 阅读时抓住时间这条主线,弄清who、 what、where、why与how。

When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we're hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education. One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor's degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there's a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a "three-year degree" model. I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly "throw out" one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist "diluting (稀释)" the quality of the education they offer. In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it's not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns (实习生) in meaningful parttime jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University. (1)Which of the following can best sum up the main idea? A.It's time to shorten the learning process. B.Best learning takes place over time. C.University education should be watered down. D.College education calls for reform. (2)We can learn from the passage that _ . A.most American universities are against the "three-year degree" model B.many famous US universities are considering adopting the "three-year degree" model C.professors are willing to accept the "three-year degree" model D.The "three-year degree" model can make college learning more efficient (3)In most US universities, _ .
