1.Shrinking is supposed to be a natural part of aging. But researchers at the Wingate Institute in Israel believe you can minimize height loss with moderate aerobic activity. In a study of 1,000 people, the researchers found that men who exercised lost only half as much height as men who never exercised--just 2.6 centimeters compared with 5.5 cm. "Physical activity may help maintain skeletal integrity and reduce compression fractures in the vertebrae as you grow older," says Sherry

Sherman, Ph.D., of the National Institute on Aging.

2.How Much Water Should People Drink?

Many people believe they are supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day, or about two liters. Why? Because that is what they have been told all their life. But a new report offers some different advice. Experts say people should obey their bodies; they should drink as much water as they feel like drinking.

The report says most healthy people meet their daily needs for liquid by letting thirst be their guide. The report is from the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academies. This organization provides scientific and technical advice to the government and the public.

The report contains some general suggestions. The experts say women should get about two-point-seven liters of water daily. Men should get about three-point-seven liters. But wait -- in each case, that is more than eight glasses.

There is an important difference. The report does not tell people how many glasses of water to drink. In fact, the experts say it may be impossible to know how many glasses are needed to meet these guidelines. This is because the daily water requirement can include the water content in foods.

People do not get water only by forcing themselves to drink a set number of glasses per day. People also drink fruit juices and sodas and milk. They drink coffee and tea. These all contain water. Yet some also contain caffeine. This causes the body to expel more water. But the writers of the report say this does not mean the body loses too much water.

As you might expect, the Institute of Medicine says people need to drink more water when they are physically active. The same is true of those who live in hot climates. Depending on heat and activity, people could need two times as much water as others do.

All this, however, does not answer one question. No one seems sure why people have the idea that good health requires eight glasses of water daily.

It may have started with a misunderstanding. In nineteen-forty-five, the National Academy of Sciences published some guidelines. Its Food and Nutrition Board said a good amount of water for most adults was two-point-five liters daily. This was based on an average of one milliliter for each calorie of food eaten.

But that was only part of what the board said. It also said that most of this amount is contained in prepared foods.

3.The other outstanding feature is that the new inventions were for everyday use. The canals were arteries of communication: they were not made to carry pleasure boats, but barges. And the barges were not made to carry luxuries, but pots and pans and bales of cloth, boxes of ribbon, and all the common things that people buy by the pennyworth.

4.This might involve routine daily decisions----something as simple as skipping a favorite late-night TV show and getting to bed early, to be wide awake for a meeting the next morning.

Or it might involve longer-term resolves. A young widow with three children decided to invest her insurance settlement in a college education for herself. She considered the realities of a tight budget and little free time, but these seemed small sacrifices in return for the doors that a degree (学位)would open. Today she is a highly paid financial consultant.

5.…In 1991, one of the most eventful years of this century, the world witnessed(目睹) the dramatic and transforming(转播)impact(影响)on those events of live television by satellite. 6.California has a large population of any of the states. Nearly 20,000,000 people live in California. In 1960 California had the second largest population, and New York was the first. Today, however, New York is the second with population of 18,000,000. Pennsylvania is the third with population of 12,000,000. The fourth state, Texas, has a population of 11,000,000.

The fifth, sixth, and seventh largest states in population are Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan. New Jersey, Florid, and Massachusetts are the eighth, ninth, and tenth largest states.

Although, Alaska is the largest state in size, it is the smallest in population. Alaska had only 303,000 people in 1970.

7.HOLLYWODROBBERY

How does a hit movie go from the free market to the black market? TIME retraces the trail!

STUDIO EXECUTIVES, NO STRANGERS TO MELODRAMA, have begun to talk about movie piracy the way FBI agents talk about terrorism: they watch the web for ―chatter,‖ they embed films with hidden ―fingerprints,‖ and they speak without irony about ―changing hearts and minds.‖ They even use night-vision goggles. It‘s not going too far to say they are completely paranoid, which doesn‘t mean they are wrong.

On the night of NOV.29, Warner Bros. transformed more than 500 American theaters into secure compounds for a sneak preview of The Last Samurai. The $140 million Tom Cruise vehicle, designed to transport the star from the screen to the Oscar Podium, was filmed on location in New Zealand and Japan with a cast of 750. All the hype, along with the adolescent story line-samurai fight against the Japanese army! – guaranteed the film to be of interest to pirates. And in the age of faster Internet connections, protecting a movie has become like guarding very expensive air. So to prevent an early booting from squashing ticket sales, more than 1,000 security guards hand delivered prints of the film to projection rooms. They searched each facility for recording devices. In lobbies, moviegoers were siphoned through metal detectors. Camera phones were confiscated. As the lights went down and Cruise and his movie-star teeth flickered onto the screen, men and women in the dark blazers walked solemnly down the aisles, searching for the pale glow of camcorders through their night-vision goggles. Maybe because this was Los Angeles, the moviegoers didn‘t seem to notice the paramilitary scene unfolding beside their military fiction.

8.A new and possibly more virulent version of the ―Code Red‖ computer worm was detected circulating the Internet over the weekend, attacking machines and leaving them vulnerable to other intruders, The Systems Administration, Networking and Security Institute (SANS) reported. Code Red surreptitiously infects computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT or 2000 operating systems and its IIS Web server software and then makes infected machines scan the Internet for more victims.

If the new worm spreads as quickly as last week's Code Red outbreak, hundreds of thousands of Web sites could be left open to computer hackers. Machines that had already been ―patched‖ with Microsoft software aimed at thwarting the virus were not vulnerable to the new Code Red, computer experts said.

9.A Time To Love

By Freewind Gingerblaze

Ravdale was such a tiny community but it had a reputation for being a great place to escape the rigors of city life and get away to the 'great outdoors'. It seemed to be the perfect place for Carla and Stan to go to try and piece back the remnants of their failing marriage.

It was Carla's idea when she saw the brochure in the beauty shop that another patron had forgotten. The scenery looked stunning and tranquil with a small but unbelievably clear lake, fed by the melting water of the nearby mountains. Acres and acres of tall pine and evergreen lined the shores of the lake with widely spaced quaint cabins nestled in a clearing here and there. It was perfect!

When she first suggested it to Stan, he did not seem receptive to the idea at all. First objection: it was too far. Second objection: it was too expensive for their strained budget. The third objection was silent but they both knew it was there. Why should they go there and spend three days either fighting or in total cold silence?

However, Carla kept working on him and he finally agreed just to shut her up about it. She called and made the reservations for the cabin, the rental car and organized everything before they left. All Stan had to do was get himself ready and then drive.

The drive across two states was done mostly in their habitual silence but Carla kept herself from showing any anxiety by either reading or sleeping when she was not driving. She knew that the hours of silence away from his refuge of work and television gave Stan time to think that she knew was very necessary. After several hours, he tired of the fading in and out of the radio, the same CD's over and over again and so he began to talk.

The conversation stayed light and proceeded to continue into their meals as they drew closer to Ravdale. Carla was growing more hopeful by the mile and by the minute. By the time they reached the cabin late that night, she was very encouraged. She said nothing when Stan mumbled a weary good night and promptly went to sleep. She took hope in the knowledge that they still had two whole days of togetherness ahead of them.

The days seemed to pass quickly beginning the next morning as they rented a small bass boat and went out onto the placid lake to do some fishing. She did not care for fishing but she knew that Stan loved it. They spent three fishless hours on the lake but Stan seemed to have enjoyed himself as he was more than willing to go on a long walk up the Nature trail with her in the afternoon. She thrived in the awing majesty of the wooded area and the serene quiet of the walk. Stan also seemed to be pleased with the beauty around him.

They returned to the cabin for a warm meal that Carla cooked and Stan ate with a ravenous, healthy hunger. She showed her delight when he offered to help with the clean up. 'Yep,' she thought to herself, 'things are definitely looking up!' Matters improved even more when he reached for her in the bed and they made quiet but contenting love for the first time in many months. Her plans were working wonderfully.

The next day seemed to be a flawless copy of the first until they sat down to dinner and they heard the wind begin to howl like a banshee. It seemed to have come from out of nowhere and

soon, the lashing rain and booming thunder followed as a mountain storm awakened in the night sky and dumped its wrath upon the tiny lake and even smaller cabin. The power failed so they lit the kerosene lamps and moved closer to the fire burning brightly in the fireplace.

There on a Indian rug in front of the hearth, they left quiet love behind and took each other to heights to equal the rage of the mad storm outside. Just at the end, everything suddenly went quiet. The rain stopped, the thunder ceased and the wind went eerily silent. They both stopped in surprise and listened to the sound of nothing!

Without knowing why, Stan was overwhelmed with an intense sense of fear. He never said a word but quickly rolled his naked wife up in the rug, grabbed his jeans, lifted her and made an unexplainably quick dash for the door. She lay silent in his arms, terrified by the unmasked fear on his face. He flung himself through the front door and leaped like an Olympic jumper from the front porch.

At that very moment, a huge jagged streak of lightning sliced the sky and its sizzling wicked end found mark on top of an very tall pine that stood at the far western corner of cabin. The lightning split the tree as neatly as a dagger through flesh and the burning tree groaned, swayed and then collapsed onto to the top of the cabin. The roof caved and the cabin soon was a shambles of burning pine, varnished logs and other contents inside, everything but the two humans that had been there just moments before.

The wind began to moan and rise again. The rain fell again but not as hard. The rumbling thunder sounded but with a distinct distance to its sound. The storm was passing.

Incredulous, Carla turned and stared in awe at the face of her husband. 'How did you know?' she whispered. He stared down at her, and his eyes told her his thoughts. He was thinking of how close he had come to losing her and knew that nothing was worth that. He pulled her close to him as he returned his gaze to the burning cabin and said softly

'My grandfather always told me to be wary when a angry wind suddenly goes quiet. It is a warning of danger! And, my dear wife, I think this proves he was right.' Carla only leaned closer to her husband, sheltering in his strength and quietly nodded her head in agreement.

146) In that infinitesimal fraction of time, inconceivable and immeasurable, during which the first atomic bomb converted a small part of its matter into the greatest burst of energy released on earth up to that time, Prometheus had broken his bonds and brought a new fire down to earth, a fire three million times more powerful than the original fire he snatched from the gods for the benefit of man some five hundred thousand years ago.

147)The chess board is the world, the pieces are the phenomena of the universe, the rules of the game are what we call the laws of nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just and patient. But we also know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance.

148) The mayor of Toledo said in 1932: ―I have seen thousands of these defeated, discouraged, hopeless men and women, cringing and fawning as they come to ask for public aid. It is a spectacle of national degradation.‖

149) British newspapers – all of them some of the time, and some of them all the time – behave badly in two ways. They intrude unnecessarily and often hurtfully into people‘s privacy; and they publish inaccurate, sometimes made-up stories. The victims have little redress. If they are rich and the article is defamatory, they can sue for libel. Most cannot afford to do so, and even the rich cannot prevent an invasion of their privacy. Fierce competition, particularly between tabloid newspapers, leads to more feet in more doors.

150) I read his Progress and Poverty, and went to a meeting of Hyndman‘s Marxist Democratic Federation, where I rose and protested against its drawing a red herring across the trail blazed by George. I was contemptuously dismissed as a novice who had not read the great first volume of Marx‘s Capital.

I promptly read it, and returned to announce my complete conversion by it. Immediately contempt changed to awe; for Hyndman‘s disciples had not read the book themselves, it being then accessible only in Deville‘s French version in the British Museum reading room, my daily resort.

151) (When one individual inflicts bodily injury upon another, such injury that death results, we call the deed man-slaughter; when the assailant knew in advance that the injury would be fatal, we

call his deed murder.) But when society places hundreds of proletarians in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death, one which is quite as much a death by violence as that by the sword or bullet; when it deprives thousands of the necessaries of life, places them under conditions in which they cannot live – forces them, through the strong arm of the law, to remain in such conditions until that death ensues which is the inevitable consequence –knows that these thousands of victims must perish, and yet permits these conditions to remain, its deed is murder just as surely as the deed of the single individual; disguised, malicious murder, murder against which none can defend himself, which does not seem what it is, because no man sees the murderer, because the death of the victim seems a natural one, since the offence is more one of omission than that of commission. (But murder it remains.)

152) One afternoon I heard Imelda and her daughter arguing in the kitchen. Her daughter had quarreled with her husband‘s parents, and Imelda was insisting that she apologize to them. Her daughter objected. ―But, Mama, I just can‘t swallow them, not even with honey. They talk so big until we need something; then they‘re too poor. So today when they wouldn‘t even lend enough to pay for a new bed, all I did was say something that I‘ve heard you say a hundred times: ?If so grand, why so poor? If so poor, why so grand?‘‖

―Impertinent!‖ snorted Imelda. ―Have I not also taught you, ?what the tongue says, the neck pays for‘? I will not have it said that I could never teach my daughter proper respect for her elders. And before you go to beg their pardon, change those trousers for a dress. You know how your mother-in-law feels about pants on a woman. She always says, ?what was hatched a hen must not try to be a rooster!‘‖

H er daughter made one more try. ―But Mama, you often say, ?If the saint is annoyed, don‘t pray to him until he gets over it.‘ Can‘t I leave it for tomorrow?‖

―No, no and no! Remember: ?If the dose is nasty, swallow it fast.‘ You know, my child, you did wr ong. But, ?A gift is the key to open the door closed against you.‘ I have a cake in the oven that I was making for the Senora‘s dinner. I will explain to the senora. Now, dear, hurry home and make yourself pretty in your pink dress. By the time you get back, I will have the cake ready for you to take to your mother-in-law. She will be so pleased that she may make your father-in-law pay for the bed. Remember: ?One hand washes the other, but together they wash the face.‘‖一天下午,我听见伊梅尔达和女儿在厨房里争论开了。

I'm learning to do that a lot in this life, to let go. I'm learning to do。 It doesn't help to hang on to the hurt or judgment. It doesn't work to blame or criticize. Those approaches only serve to keep you stuck. 减轻伤痛:to help to hang on to the hurt
