第三部分阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

In Canada and the United States, there is a new group of children called ―satellite kids‖, who live in one place but whose parents live in another place.

Asians are immigrating(移民)to Canada and the United States in larger numbers than ever before. Most Asians immigrate because they believe that they can give their children a better education in the West. In Asia, especially in China, Japan, and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave their countries so that their children can go to university.

The problem is that when Asians arrive, they discover that finding a job and making money are more difficult in the West than in the East. Also, they find that they are very lonely, and that they miss their homes. Because of these two reasons, most Asian parents decide to go back to work while their children study in the West. Therefore, these children become ―satellite kids‖, and most of their parents do not know how sad it is to be a ―satellite kid‖.

Canad ians and Americans are discovering the ―satellite kid‖ problem. Because these children do not speak English and because their parents are not there to take care of them, they are often absent from school. To be a ―satellite kid‖ means to grow up in a count ry where you know you are different and where you cannot make friends because you do not speak English well. Also, it means to grow up lonely, because your parents are elsewhere. What these ―satellite kids‖ will probably say to their parents is that it’s b etter to have parents around than to have a university education.

56. Some Asian parents send their kids abroad because __________.

A. they hope their children may easily find a job there

B. the kids may not be accepted by universities in their own countries

C. all foreign universities are better than the ones in their own countries

D. the kids want to improve their English and make foreign friends

57. ―Satellite kids‖ refer to Asian kids __________.

B. living abroad alone

C. without university education

D. speaking no English

58. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Parents want a better education for their kids.

B. Parents feel lonely and miss their family.

C. Canadians and Americans begin to notice the ―satellite kids‖ problem.

D. Kids in foreign countries alone are badly in need of care from family.

"I have super powers," a girl named Megan whispers to her doctor in a recent TV show. That's her explanation for how she's able to stand painful cuts and being hit with a base-ball bat--all without feeling any pain.

Across the world about a few hundred people suffer from one of many disorders (紊乱) that make them completely unable to feel pain from the time they are born.

Now a new form of this disorder has been recognized among people from northern Pakistan, and scientists have tracked down the changed gene responsible for the condition. Their study could help researchers gain a better understanding of how pain works and may help them develop new medicine that may reduce pain with fewer side effects.

Researchers discovered the latest version of the disorder when they found a young street performer in Pakistan, sticking knives through his arms. Then they found six other people from three families in the same area who also had the disease.

These people were able to feel hot and cold, sense pressure, and could tell sharp objects touching their skin from blunt ones. They were all believed to be of only average intelligence. But none of them felt any pain. Surprisingly, the families were unrelated, but all of the sufferers had changes to the same gene. The changed gene causes a protein (蛋白质) to form part of a channel that is undoubtedly important for human sense of pain.

Early childhood can be awful for people without feeling any pain. They can bite endlessly on their tongues and fingers during teething, stick their fingers in their eyes, or suffer major injuries without noticing. The six people studied for the Nature paper all had injuries to their lips or tongues from biting themselves when they were young.

66. The proper title for the passage is "Feeling No Pain: _______ ."

A. Cause of the Gene Disorder Still Unknown

B. New Disorder Found Throughout the World

C. Way of Dealing with It Studied in Pakistan

D. New Form of Rare Gene Disorder Discovered

D

In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord(房东)can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest(投资)in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent–controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city.

Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low–paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics hold the opinion that an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.

Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity(尊严). Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.

Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if ―other things are equal‖. Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agre e on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic

questions.

67.There is the possibility that setting maximum rent may .

A.cause a shortage of apartments

B.worry those who rent apartments as homes

C.increase the profits of landlords

D.encourage landlords to invest in building apartment

68.We can safely say that rent control .

A.will always benefit those who rent apartments B.is unnecessary

C.will bring negative effects in the long run D.is necessary under all circumstances 69.The passage tells us about .

A.the relationship between supply and demand

B.the possible results of government controls

C.the necessity of government control

D.the urgency of getting rid of government controls

70.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

Beggars are often seen sitting under blankets with heads sadly bowed as people pass them by in Cambridge’s market center. Some ask people passing by for change and some just sit and wait to be given money.A few use aggressive behavior to earn money.

To solve the problem of aggressive begging,an ―alternative giving‖ plan has been suggested.Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. It aims to encourage people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give generously to local homeless causes.

Supporters of this plan think it will be an effective way to solve the beggars’ alcohol and drug problems. But the police oppose the plan arguing that beggars who do not receive cash may turn to criminality( 犯罪) to feed their addictions. The homeless charity ―Crisis‖ said the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that imaginative and positive plans can help create local understanding and sympathy instead of hardness. Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food, and clothes.Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries.Governments must play a big role in solving this problem.Training beggars to work and helping them to find appropriate jobs is one option. This is especially true for developing countries where many low-skill jobs exist. The general community should also be educated to see beggars not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.

Nowadays, human beings are faced with an embarrassing situation.

In the cartoon, we can see a man talking to a paper bird kept in his cage and beside him is a vast desert dotted with endless tree roots. Obviously, birds have lost their homes as people have cut down all the trees. As a result, humans have lost their animal friends.

The scene may seem ridiculous and unbelievable to us, but it may become a reality in the future if we go on developing economy regardless of the damage caused to the environment. Now in some places, trees have been cut down without limits. Some scientists say that there will be no vast forests in 20 or 30 years and many species will die out. It is really a terrible thing.

Therefore, we should realize the importance of environmental protection and live in harmony with our animal friends. …
