The analysis of Mr.Darcy's characteristics in Pride and Prejudice

Introduction

This thesis focuses on the characterization of Mr.Fitzwilliam Darcy by explaining the changes of his thoughts and behaviors with the development of the novel. The thesis also mainly analyzes Darcy's pride and reflects on the significance of reality. It is expected to help readers contemplate hu-man's good qualities and to give some suggestions to people in current so-ciety.

1.Social Background

The writing period of Pride and Prejudice is the time of the Regency in Britain."At the end of the18th century and at the beginning of the19th cen-tury,Britain was at the period of transition from the earlier stage of Capital-ism to Capitalist Industrialization.

2。Mr.Darcy's Pride

2.1Reasons of Darcy's Pride

Among many characters readers are often impressed by Mr.Darcy's proud and arrogant attitude and his superior social status.Equally, readers are pleased by his changes and his happy marriage. But,what are the rea-sons that lead to Darcy's pride?

First of all is his social background."During Jane's lifetime,Great Brit-ain was governed by a rigid class structure.Families in the upper class in-herited fortunes and titles of nobility. They also held important government positions. The middle class was composed of professionals like the Rev. Austen, people who worked as clergy, lawyers, teachers, doctors, and mer-chants.The lower classes:Laborers and servants worked for the upper and middle class".Raised in a noble family,Darcy possesses his position and his responsibility all the time.He will not allow anyone or anything to ruin the reputation of his family. At the same time, unconsciously,he has been used to thinking and acting with pride and dignity.

Secondly,Darcy has been a spoiled child.Darcy's mother passed away when he was young The love from his father and his aunt Lady Catherine, the respect from Georgiana as well as the trust from Bingley as a friend, all have created Darcy a comfortable environment for improvement, but also provides him the chances to take control. The family influence makes him more brave and independent.

Thirdly, his nature impresses people with coldness and indifference which are the evidence of pride.Darcy's huge fortune enables him the power of business, but an exclusive social circle reduces the possibility for him to practice communication skills. The want of social intercourse avoid him a great deal chance for people to know him well.As a result,he wears the air of pride.

2.2Reflection on Darcy's Pride

One reflection of Darcy's proud behavior is at the very beginning at the ball in Meryton. In just a couple of hours people begin to dislike him."Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien, having ten thousand a year. The gentlemen pro-nounced him to be a fine figure of a man;till his manners gave a disgust which turned the tide of is popularity;for he was discovered to be proud.

The other reflection of Darcy's pride is his first proposal scene. After months of struggle and consideration,Darcy chooses to open his heart to Elizabeth and tells her all his love. However,Darcy neglects the"proper words"on a proposal occasion though his feeling is more of tenderness rat-her than pride. His honest confession of all his thoughts doesn't win him the pleasure of marriage;instead,it arouses the argument involving Jane's hap-piness and Darcy's responsibility in Wickham's case.

2.3Result of Darcy's Pride

Firstly,on Darcy himself.Darcy realizes that his affection to Elizabeth is out of understanding, and he takes her advices to change.Due to respect to Elizabeth and his own sense of responsibility,Darcy pays off all the debts and arranges Wickham a position. His pride makes him learn to change and improve himself;and the changes make him a more descent gentleman.Fur-thermore,he marries a well-educated girl who supports him.The marriage is a reflection of his improvement and also a combination of love and re-sponsibility.

Secondly,on Elizabeth.Darcy has gone through misunderstanding and refusal before he gets married.Darcy's pride"mortifies"Elizabeth's pride, so she cannot forgive him, especially when she is misled by Wickham's made-up"misery".Fortunately,Darcy's letter of explaining and his great change after the quarrel really force Elizabeth to reconsider her own feel-ings.

3.Representation of Significance in Reality

It shows clear signs of maturity as the author ceases reacting to the ro-mantic tradition and starts concentrating instead on fulfilling her own intel-lectual and artistic design"This novel remains popular throughout centuries and it is full of contradictions and varieties which contain moral principles, powerful witness and philosophical thoughts.Readers are able to exper-ience for themselves the relax life styles and they also can learn the inspir-ations in our reality life.

Conclusion

The thesis analyzes Mr.Fitzwilliam's changes of thoughts and behavi-ors step by step.Being an elegant but proud wealthy landlord,Darcy grad-ually realizes his defects, reflects his pride and superior attitude and im-proves his personality. His affection to Elizabeth also changes from super-ficial attraction to understanding and respect. It is not easy for him to over-come the difficulty in self-knowledge and self-improvement.But his effort in making progress actually wins for him love and trust.

Darcy is proud while Elizabeth is prejudicial. They are both well edu-cated and enjoy high reputation in society, but they fail the fight with hu-man's ill qualities. Both of them are just too confident in what they have ob-served.People should learn to analyze the current situation before making decisions.Pride is unnecessary and Prejudice is unacceptable in a modern world.People should be modest when dealing with others and should treat others with objective opinion.People also need to hold their own opinions and express them in proper manners.

The distance is nothing ,when one has a motive. Mrs.Bennet’s eyes sparkled with pleasure. We must trespass a litter longer on your kindness. Mrs.Bennet was profuse in her acknowledgements. I often tell my other girls they are nothing to her. That is my idea of good breading;and those persons who fancy themselves very important and never open their mouths , quiet mistake the matter. A lady’s imagination is very rapid;it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony . Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us. He is ate up with pride. Upon my word ! Affectation of candour is common enough –one meets it everywhere. But to be candid without ostentation or design—to take the good of everybody’s character and make it still better , and say nothing of the bad—belongs to you alone Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three and twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Everything nourishes what is strong already. She had high animal spirits, and a sort of self-consequence. The day passed much as the day before had done.

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London. Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of 'most loved books' such as The Big Read.[1] It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide Plot summary The narrative opens with Mr Bingley, a wealthy, charming and social young bachelor, moving into Netherfield Park in the neighbourhood of the Bennet family. Mr Bingley is soon well received, while his friend Mr Darcy makes a less favorable first impression by appearing proud and condescending at a ball that they attend (this is partly explained in that he detests dancing and is not much for light conversation). Mr Bingley singles out Elizabeth's elder sister, Jane, for particular attention, and it soon becomes apparent that they have formed an attachment to each other. By contrast, Darcy slights Elizabeth, who overhears and jokes about it despite feeling a budding resentment. On paying a visit to Mr Bingley's sister, Jane is caught in a heavy downpour, catches cold, and is forced to stay at Netherfield for several days. Elizabeth arrives to nurse her sister and is thrown into frequent company with Mr Darcy, who begins to perceive his attachment to her, but is too proud to proceed on this feeling. Mr Collins, a clergyman, pays a visit to the Bennets. Mr Bennet and Elizabeth are much amused by his obsequious veneration of his employer, the noble Lady Catherine de Bourgh, as well as by his self-important and pedantic nature. It soon becomes apparent that Mr Collins has come to Longbourn to choose a wife from among the Bennet sisters (his cousins) and Elizabeth has been singled out. At the same time, Elizabeth forms an acquaintance with Mr Wickham, a militia officer who claims to have been very seriously mistreated by Mr Darcy, despite having been a ward of Mr Darcy's father. This tale, and Elizabeth's attraction to Mr Wickham, adds fuel to her dislike of Mr Darcy. At a ball given by Mr Bingley at Netherfield, Mr Darcy becomes aware of a general expectation that Mr Bingley and Jane will marry, and the Bennet family, with the

These past months have been a torment. I came to Rosings only to see you. I have fought against judgement, my family's expectation, the inferiority of your birth, my rank. I will put them aside and ask you to end my agony. Miss Elizabeth: I don't understand. Mr Darcy: I love you. Most ardently. Please do me the honour of accepting my hand. Mr Darcy: Might I ask why with so little civility I am thus repulsed? Miss Elizabeth: I might enquire why you told me you liked me against your better judgement? If I was uncivil, then that is some excuse. But you know I have other reasons. Mr Darcy: What reasons? Miss Elizabeth: Do you think anything might tempt me to accept the man who has ruined the happiness of a most beloved sister? Do you deny that you separated a young couple who loved each other, exposing your friend to censure for caprice and my sister to derision for disappointed hopes, involving them both in acute misery? Mr Darcy: I do not deny it. Miss Elizabeth: How could you do it? Mr Darcy: I believed your sister indifferent to him. I realised his attachment was deeper than hers.

When Prid e Encounters Prejudice, Everything is Different Ⅰ: Jane Austen (16 December 1775 –18 July 1817), one of the most famous novelists in Britain, was born in Hampshire. She lived in the villages throughout her life. Although there were 2 suitors, she never married. She finished her first novel when she was only 21 years old. This work’s name was First Impressions (After amending, it had a new name: Pride and Prejudice). Ⅱ: Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and marriage. Mr. Bennet was an English gentleman living in Hertfordshire with his wife. He had five daughters: the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia. Because of the law, after the death of Mr. Bennet, their house would be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met. This family's future happiness and security dependent on the 5 daughters’ marriages. One day, a rich gentleman Mr. Bingley came and rented a large house in this country. His sisters and his best friend Mr. Darcy came together. Love was soon in the air for one of the 5 sisters, while another had a prejudice against Mr. Darcy. Then they experienced many things, but at last, Mr. Bingley married the oldest sister Jane, and Elizabeth overcame the prejudice and married to Mr. Darcy. It’s a happy ending. Ⅲ: Although Mr. Song said the book report should be objective, but I had to say this book touched my heart d eeply. The women written by Jane Austen still live in our world. Some like Charlotte Lucas, they choose a marriage without love just for money and a stable life. Some like Lydia, they are so frivolous and foolish that they flatter themselves that they can do anything well. Some like Mary, they are not good-looking but think themselves are the best ones. They look down every man while they are eager for a man’s love in their hearts. Some like Jane, they are kind and beautiful, but they are also reserved and feminine。They don’t have courage to fight for the love of their own but wait here in vain. And there are also some girls like innocent Ms Darcy or like vainglorious and superficially clever Bingley sisters. Of course, some girls like Elizabeth, they are clever, gentle, open-minded, and they know their own hearts. They never give in even facing a difficult situation. They are good ladies who are worth loving and cherishing. Jane Austen’s wisdom always appeals to me, which makes me smile through the whole reading.

Pride and Prejudice By Jane Austen (An Excerpt from Chapter One) 第一句:"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of wife."*在本文中"It is a truth universally acknowledged"在七个译文中,大多译为“一条举世公认的真理”。 However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters."*在这七则译文中,文字上各有不同的修辞,修饰。 My dear Mr Bennet',said his lady to him one day, have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?"*在译文一中,译者把“My dear Mr Bennet"译成“我的好老爷”,个人觉得用的不是很恰当,“老爷”这一词太偏中式化了;而在二三四五六七中,则均译为“亲爱的本内特先生”,给人一种太正式化的印象,夫妻之间的谈话更应亲密些;译文五译得比较好些;而在叙述句中,"said his lady to him one day"译文一四五把此译文放在了第一句,其他的则放在原句位置,个人认为放在句首更加贴切。 Mr Bennet replied that he had not."*这句简单的译文七句也各不相同。" But it is,returned she.For Ms Long has just been here, and she told me all about it."*译文"But it is"一至七中,译文二三译为“的确租出去了”;译文三则“可确是租出去了”’译文四则为“但的确已经租出去了”;文五则为“当真租出去了”;译文六与七则译为“确实租出去了”。
