News Update

The California School Library Association is working diligently to transform school libraries in our state. We are one of 15 states that has developed Standards and Guidelines for Library/Media Programs. These standards are being reviewed by the State Assembly Committee for Education and hopefully will be sent to the State Assembly. The Committee has already approved the Equitable Access to Digital Education Resources

Act to authorize state purchases of online magazines and databases for use in our schools. This will reduce the cost to our local schools and again bring California in line with most states providing online sources of learning to our students.

Research continues to show that a good school library program in all grades helps students achieve. Various studies of elements named in the research had a positive, measurable impact on student achievement. At this time, California scores 49th or 50th in comparison with other states in Library services.

On the Local Scene

It is difficult to believe that summer is around the corner. Hopefully part of vacation time will be spent reading. Just like any other skill, practicing reading improves reading skills which encourages the love of reading. If you would like a reading list of books, please call the Information Center office.

Textbook collection is a tremendous endeavor at the end of the year. We need everyone’s cooperation to accomplish this efficiently. Please continue to remind students to return their book as soon as they can, before or after

their finals. Each year, more students wait until the fall to return their books and this hinders the distribution to students in September. Collecting these books takes is time consuming at a time when we are beginning a new school year.

The PTSA generously finds volunteers for us to help with textbooks in June and we can’t do without these wonderful folk. If you would like to help, call the PTSA or call the Library and we will pass along your name.

Go Warriors !!!

Boys Baseball

The 2006 version of Warrior baseball is off to a great start. With a 3-2 pre season record, the Tribe heads into Sea View League play on Friday, March 17, 2006 at Newport Harbor. The season started off with a victory over Kennedy High in La Palma (4-2). Beau Graham, the pitcher, went the distance as the Warriors put four runs on the board in the sixth inning, after falling behind early in the contest.

The second round of the Loara Tournament sent the Woodbridge nine to La Palma Park to play against Canyon High, the second ranked team in Southern

California. The guys played well

before losing on a three run homer in the fifth inning. The final score was Canyon 5 - Woodbridge 2. Round three brought Anaheim High to Windrow Park where the Warriors pulled out a closely fought battle (2-1) over the Colonists. Number one ranked Cypress, defending CIF champion, defeated the Tribe 6-0.

The tournament final game was Monday, March 27 at San Clemente.

Monday night, March 13, was the best played game of the young season,

where the Warriors came from behind to defeat Northwood in extra innings (6-5).

So far, so good for the Woodbridge baseballers. Multi-position players have led to the early success achieved by these fine student-athletes. Catchers: Travis Rowatt and Chris Feicht ; the Pitching staff: Beau Graham , Chris Feicht , David Beebe , Mitch Rossi , and Jon Arends ; First

basemen: Chris Feicht and James Parr ; Second base: Sam

Michaels ; Shortstop: JJ Altobelli ; Third Basemen: David Bebe and Beau Graham ; Left Field: Eric Giffin and Beau Graham ; Center Field: Pat Dowling ; Right Field: Chris Martin and Jon Arends .

As you can see it is a small squad, with players being asked to

become multi-taskers! The club is rallying to the cause, looking

forward to striving toward another playoff appearance in 2006.

Track & Field Enjoying

Early Success With almost 200 athletes, Boys and Girls Track and Field teams are doing their best to continue Woodbridge High School’s winning ways. Besides each athlete continually to improve their own personal record (“PR”), many individuals and relay-teams are putting their marks onto the WHS all-time lists and also giving notice to the rest of California, if not the country. The season started with an exclamation mark at the Earl Engman Relays, where Warrior athletes medaled in 15 of the 17 races entered, and with each the Boys and Girls teams taking 3rd

place in their divisions. In the Distance Medley, the girls team of Jessie Babcock , Cassie Stanislaw , Christine Babcock, and Sarah Toberty won the championship while recording a time considered the top mark in the State. The boys team of Conrad Wozniak , Bobby Bishop , Danny Antrim , and Jordan Wozniak were champions in the 4x800m. Another championship was earned by the girls 4x800m team of Sophie Lische , Jessie Babcock , Christine Babcock , and Sarah Toberty . The girls Distance Medley and 4x800m teams broke records that had stood for fifteen years! The final championship that day was produced by the Girls 4x400 team of Kyle Wolff ,

Stanislaw , Christine Babcock , and Sarah Toberty . The very next week at the Camarillo

Distance Relays the team of

Babcock , Stanislaw , Babcock , and Toberty again won the girls

Distance Medley, the featured event at this meet, this time with the 3rd best mark in the State. Christine Babcock was named co-athlete of the meet.

Meanwhile, at a non-scoring meet the first week of competition, WHS had firsts in the High Jump as two ladies, Stanislaw and Taylor Beadle , broke the 5-foot barrier, while Philip Tramposh became WHS’s first ever sophomore boy to clear 6-feet 2-inches. In addition to these spectacular performances, Athletes-of-the-week included Clarissa Lara and Jordan Wozniak for the distance events

and Scott Belz and Heather Huynh for the sprints

Next up was Trabuco High School where many athletes PR’d, many others won their events, and the athletes-of-the-week included throwers Jefferson Santos and Caitlin Schott for the field events, and Victor Sine and Kyle Wolff for running.

In the next meet vs Mater Dei and Esperanza, Woodbridge enjoyed victories from Conrad Wozniak in the 1600m, Victor Sine in the hurdles, Phillip Tramposh in the

(track & field - con’t)

high jump and Jeff Santos in the shot and discus. On the girls’ side, we had victories by Cassie Stanislaw in the high jump, triple jump and the 400m while Christine and Jessie Babcock finished 1 & 2 in the 1600m and the 3200m. Athletes-of-the-week were Shane Berglas (Distance) for the boys and Erica Teen (hurdles) for the girls.

Many breakthrough performances were experienced the next meet at Newport Harbor. These included girls pole vaulters Nicole Belz and Taylor Beadle, Stanislaw’s

36’8.25” triple jump, Victor Sine’s double victory in the hurdles, the 1,2,3 finish in the girls 100m (Marjorie Strong, Nusha Agahi, Heather Huynh), and Strong’s double victory in her sprints. Also that week Woodbridge competed in the Triton Invitational in San Clemente where our athletes set three meet records. Conrad Wozniak won the 1600m with a personal and meet record (4:27) and then came back to set another personal record in the 3200 at

9:44. Christine Babcock won the 1600m to set the meet record and then ran a PR 400 in the 4x400 and Jessie Babcock won the 3200 to set that meet record while finishing 2nd in the 1600. Michael Trieu vaulted 14’0” to move into the WHS # 3 all time spot, and Bobby Bishop enjoyed 2 PRs (4:43 and 10:15). Athletes-of-the-week were Marjorie Strong and Bobby

Bishop.

Most recently, meets at Aliso

Niguel and Trabuco Hills

(Invitational), produced more

outstanding individual efforts.

Conrad Wozniak became the first

male athlete in our school history

to run, in the same meet, a 1600m

race under 4:30 (WHS #5 all time)

and a 3200m under 9:30 (# 2 all

time). Christine Babcock became

the 4th athlete to run a 1600m race

under 5:00 (WHS # 3 all time

mark) in our school’s history.

Michael Trieu climbed to the # 3

spot on the all time list with his

14’0” pole vault. In the 800m,

Sarah Toberty broke the 2:20

barrier and ran the 4th fastest time

in our school’s history. Jessie

Babcock became the first athlete

for Woodbridge to run under 11:00

minutes in the 3200m in two

different seasons. In the 100m

hurdles, Erica Teen moved to the

# 7 spot on the all-time WHS list.

Athletes-of-the-week included

Hector De La Santos and

Toberty.

In addition to the above, consistent

top performers include Kevin

Quoch in the boys 100m, Sasha

Serebryannik in the boys 400m,

Jordan Wozniak in the boys

1600m, Scott Muniz in the boys

110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, Long

and Triple jumps, Richie Robert

in the long jump, Brian Deely in

the boys shot put, and Brenda

Deely, Becky Crouse and Caitlin

Schott in the girls shot put and

Next up on the Track & Field

agenda are the prestigious Arcadia

Invitationals. We will be running

the 3200m with Christine and

Jessie Babcock on Friday, and the

girls Distance Medley relay team

(see above) will run on Saturday.

The girls will be attempting to

become only the 3rd Distance

Medley team ever to run under

12:00 minutes in Orange County

history!

Boys Volleyball

JV Boys Volleyball: Battling as a

Team

Woodbridge’s JV

volleyball team has

started its 2006

season with a 5-2

record (through

the team reached the semi-finals of

the season opening Foothill JV

tourney, rolling through its pool

play without dropping a game.

The team’s only loss was to the

tourney’s eventual champion.

Junior Varisty Coach Joe Tran writes the following on his team: The 14 young men have stepped onto the volleyball court everyday, whether in practice or a game, with focus and determination to improve individually and as a team. The biggest improvement which the team has exhibited so far this season is showing their mental toughness. Our two captains, Scott MacDougall and David Wolford , have been the catalyst ensuring everyone is always physically and mentally ready for practices and matches. Our four outside hitters, Jono Druary , Justin Johnson , Carter Kendall , and Kevin Schick have

improved tremendously in passing and attacking. As outside hitters, these young men have had to learn the difficult responsibilities of having optimal ball control, disciplined defense, and mechanical hitting. With each additional match, our outside hitters have improved dramatically with their physical skills and contribution to the team. Helping the outside hitters with passing and defense are Dano Ferons , Garrett Sierra , Mike Geneau , and Peter Walton . These defensive specialist/liberos have the unenviable job of only passing and playing defense. We have played teams which serve tough and attack with great speed and proficiency, but our defense has held strong thanks to the fantastic contributions of Dano , Garrett , Geneau , and Peter .

(boys volleyball – con’t)

The middle hitter and opposite attacker positions focus primarily on two very important tasks: blocking and hitting. These two tasks require a player to be a machine. And it is only playing with mechanical efficiency in blocking and attacking that will enable any player to be effective as a middle and opposite hitter.

Travis Waddell , Ryan Gonzalez , and David Wolford have been tremendous in providing the team with a steady attack and timely blocks. Our defense has flourished thanks to the great job that our middle hitters have done in closing the block and taking away the opponents options while we are on defense. Out two opposite hitters Graham Picard and Tyler Kunnel have been a force blocking the opposing team’s outside hitters, and

on the attack. Ideally for every team who aspires to play volleyball at a high level, the opposite hitter has to be able to put up an

intimidating block and attack with a heavy arm. Graham and Tyler have done a wonderful job in providing these two key elements to the team. Lastly, the team’s setting duties have been handled by Scott MacDougall . With many teams, a most effective setter is one that is least noticed. Scott has been a clinical distributor for our hitters with his precision and intelligent decision making.

From day one, our team has never lacked individual talent at any

position. But it is turning all the individuals into a cohesive and mentally strong team unit that will

translate into success in practices and matches. These young men have worked tremendously hard and will continue to hone their skill and effort into becoming a mentally tough battle ready unit.

Frosh-Soph Coach Alan Ho writes the following on his team:

Currently the Frosh/Soph team record stands at 1-2 (6-6 overall), just coming off a loss to a very tough Redondo Union team. This team is led by a strong middle

attack by Michael Lakin and great outside play by Noah Peterman while Jimmy Lee has the setting duties. While some of the players have had previous experience playing club volleyball with

Balboa Bay Volleyball Club, most of the student athletes are

relatively new to the sport. Austin Manaspal , Will Hayward , and Justin LaForge are picking up the sport at a rapid pace. Back in March the team did very well at the Capo Valley tournament, winning their pool. They had a bye in the first round of playoffs then lost to another very tough team, and eventual champions in Santa Margarita. They finished with a 3-1 record that day and went on to a 5th place finish. This team continues to improve every day, and should be a contender for league champions by years end.

WHS Boys Varsity

Volleyball – A Force to Be Reckoned with in 2006

The Boys varsity volleyball team boasts an 8-7 record through a tough early season schedule. The team’s Sea View League record is 4-0 through the 1st half of the

league schedule. The most notable win was a 3-0 sweep on March 23 at Newport Harbor, the county’s top ranked team.

Coach Donnie Rafter has counted on senior leadership this season lead by outside hitter Kent

Kraushaar , who has accepted a scholarship offer from UCLA to continue his academic and athletic career. This past summer, Kent also represented the Woodbridge Warriors and the United States as a member of the USA Junior National team , competing in Brazil in July of 2005. Senior middle blocker Jon Weisberg passed through a majority of the stages of the grueling admission requirements for the United States Naval Academy and recently was accepted. Congratulations Jon for providing such leadership to not only your volleyball team but the entire high school. Senior middle blocker Rick Schroeder was

honored by the Irvine World News as its ‘Athlete of the Week’

(boys volleyball – con’t) following his outstanding performance against Newport Harbor. Opposite Michael Kain’s game has flourished after being called on as the ‘go-to’ hitter on the outside in several of the mid-season games while Kraushaar was healing an injured stomach muscle. Seniors Brian Wolford and Kevin Rousso have been instrumental back row players specializing on defense for the Warriors.

Junior players contributing to the Warriors success have included defensive specialist Sean Brown, middle blocker John Crump, and outside hitter Michael Stewart. Four sophomores have been gaining valuable experience including many starts. Outside hitter Cameron Kosbab and setter Scott Liljestrom have improved their games after starting as freshmen last year. Outside hitter Blake Mills has been solid in his starts and Jeff Kerchner has used a strong vertical jump to supplement the middle blocking corp.

Finally, congratulations for a great effort by all members of the WHS Warrior Volleyball squad for their participation in the Southern

California Half-Marathon. Great

teamwork, coordination of our

tasks = successful event! A huge

thanks goes out to Cheryl Okamoto

for coordinating the players and

parents for our duties!

Come watch the speed and

power of Boys Volleyball for the

2006 Season ~ we promise to

“rock” the house!

The Woodbridge High School Pep

Squad ended the year with a

spirited cheer banquet on April

6th. Awards were presented,

dinner served, and a wonderful

DVD highlighted the

outstanding year. Lifetime

friendships were established this

past year and the girls truly had

"The Time of Their Life".

Parents of Graduating

Warriors …

For some of us, we are ending our

years of volunteering and sending

our last child into the real world,

where reality will hit them hard.

For me, I have one graduating and

one still in high school. This

leaves me with just two more years

of volunteering left at WHS.

When finished, I will have

volunteered 14 years of service for

my children’s endeavors.

However, I am not up on the

pedestal of volunteers alone. I

know that many of the parents at

Woodbridge High School have

devoted much of their time in an

effort to provide our children with

a wonderful high school

experience. Whether they’re into

sports or academics, music or art,

our children couldn’t have had the

ultimate high school experience

without the help of all the parents

who care enough to volunteer.

On behalf of the WHS student

population, thank you so much for

volunteering. It is much

appreciated. I only have two more

years left, so I’m going to make it

the best ever!!!

Congratulations and Good Luck

Seniors!!!

Snack Bar Boosters Rep

Athletes Need Physicals

Did you know that all Athletes must have a physical to participate in the WHS Athletic Program? On Wednesday, June 7th, the Athletic Department will offer physicals to all WHS students for only $25.00. Incoming Freshman be at WHS at 5:00 pm, everyone else be there at 6:00 pm to participate. All money raised benefits the Athletic Department.

Every year, the Booster Club plays a vital role in funding the athletic programs here at Woodbridge. Our athletic department receives only a very small amount of money from the district, so it is up to the parents to make things happen for our kids. This year, Boosters gave over $56,000.00 to buy much needed equipment for the various teams. Some of those purchases are listed below. When you join Boosters ($30), when you work the Half Marathon, and when you help staff the football snack bar. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the quality of the programs we offer our kids. Please remember to join boosters with your summer camp registration or next fall at the school registration. Thanks for your support!
