Kunqu is characterized by its poetic and lyrical style, as well as its emphasis on singing and acting. The performers use a combination of singing, recitation, and stylized movements to convey the emotions and narratives of the characters. The music in Kunqu is also quite distinctive, with its use of traditional Chinese instruments such as the pipa and the guqin. One of the most famous works in the Kunqu repertoire is "The Peony Pavilion" by Tang Xianzu. This play tells the story of a young woman who falls in love with a man shemeets in a dream, and her longing and despair when she cannot be with him in reality. The themes of love and longing are beautifully expressed through the music and movements of the performers, making it a timeless classic in Chinese literature and performing arts.I have had the privilege of watching a live Kunqu performance, and I was mesmerized by the grace and beauty of the art form.
