AAround the world, people have different ideas about what good manners are. When you go to restaurants in different parts of the world, it is important to know the right and wrong things to do. For example, in China it is OK to make noise in a restaurant. In fact, if a restaurant isn’t noisy and lively, you may think there is something wrong with it. However, in many Western countries, restaurants are quiet places. If a table is too loud, other people who are eating there might even complain to the owner of the restaurant.Paying the bill is also different from country to country. In China, one person usually pays for everybody. In Western countries, one person pays if he or she is entertaining clients. But when friends eat together, they usually share the cost. This is called going Dutch. Also, when Westerners pay the bill, they usually leave some extra money for the waiter. This is called “leaving a tip”. Leaving a tip is thought to be polite. In the U.S., it’s common to leave tips of 10%, 15%, or 20% of the bill; the amount is decided by how good the service is. Good waiters can make a lot of money! The way people eat food is different around the world, but you can find the same kinds of food in many countries. Chinese and Italian food, for example, are popular all over the world.1.In China, you _________ make noise in a restaurant.A. aren’t supposed toB. canC. can’tD. allowed to2.In many Western countries, restaurants are _________ places.A. quietB. livelyC. noisyD. secret3.The underlined words “going Dutch” mean _________ in Chinese.A. 宴请宾客B. 均摊费用C. 去荷兰D. 免费用餐4.When Westerners pay the bill, they usually leave some money as a tip for the _________.A. sellerB. waiterC. visitorD. boss5.What is the main idea of the passage?A. People have different ideas about what good manners are.B. Chinese food is popular all over the world.C. Paying the bill differs from country to country.D. It is polite to give tips to the restaurant waiters or waitresses.BThe customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plate as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly.I have to eat the food even if I do not want to because it is considered bad manners in the west to leave one’s food on the plate.I have also noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’sdinner party, he often refuses the offer of food or drink though he’s in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China but is not in the West at all.In the United Sates, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No,Thanks.” When an American is served with beer by host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks.I’ll take some orange juice if you have it.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you’d better remember the famous saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”1.From this passage we can see that the writer is ___________ .A.ChineseB.AmericanC.RomanD.European2.When a Chinese host kept putting more food onto his plate, the writer felt _____.A.happyB.sadC.badD.great3.In the West, people consider it bad manners ____ .A.to refuse an offer at a dinner partyB.to keep asking someone to accept somethingC.to eat much at a dinner partyD.to ask for something directly at a dinner party4.A guest at all American’s dinner party shoul d show his politeness by___________.A.eating up all the food offeredB.putting more food onto his plate as soon as he emptied itC.refusing the offer of food or drinking though he is still hungry or thirstyD.refusing to drink anything5.“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”means ___________ .A.the Romans are people of good mannersB.Americans always do the same things as the Romans doC.you should do things like Romans doD.you should get used to the local customs where you goCWhen we want to tell other people what we think, we can do it not only with the help of words, but also in many other ways. For example, we sometimes move our heads up and down when we want tosay“Yes”, and we move our heads from side to side when we want to say “No”.People who can neither hear nor talk to each other can communicate with the help of their fingers.People who don’t understand each other’s language have to do the same. The following story shows how they sometimes do it.An Englishman who couldn’t speak Italian was once travelling in Italy. One day he entered a restaurant and sat at a table. When the waiter came, the Englishman opened his mouth, put his fingers in it, took them out again and moved his lips. UNIT TENTEXT ONEWhen Princeton, the University of Virginia, and Harvard announced last fall that they would drop their early admissions options because they gave an unfair advantage to affluent students, many college counselors held their breath. Would early decision go the way of kegs in dormitories? Not for now, at least. Early admission is still going strong at many colleges and universities, including many top-tier schools.Early decision in particular--in which a student commits to a first-choice institution--is often touted as a plus for both schools and students. Colleges can lock up half of their class before January, and acceptance rates are typically higher than under regular admission. The major drawback of early decision is that it leaves students who are in the market for the best financial aid package out in the cold. By applying early, you must enroll if accepted, so comparing awards with those of other schools is out of the question. Schools like that, of course, because it helps their bottom line. But there is a possible end run: Ask if a school will release you from your obligation should its aid package fall short. In some cases, a school will roll you into the regular admission pool, allowing for comparison shopping come springtime. While some schools admit almost the same percentage of applicants during early and regular admission, many favor the early pool. Johns Hopkins University took 44 percent from its early round and 24 percent from the regular pool. Early birds at Hopkins make up a third of this fall's freshman class.Nonetheless, college counselors have seen borderline students get a boost by applying early decision. "If they aren't legacies, athletes, or an underrepresented minority, early decision may be the only hook that some students have," says Jim Conroy, chair of post-high-school counseling at New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, Ill. But you need to be realistic. "If a school is out of your reach, it's out of reach whether you apply early decision, early action, or regular admission," says Sarah Wilburn, a college counselor at Campus Bound in Quincy, Mass. "Move on and set some new goals."Advantage or not, applying early decision makes sense only if you're convinced that a school is a good fit for you. Erin Murray decided to apply to Dartmouth early despite the advice of her college counselor and others. They wanted her to beef up her transcript after she had spent a semester of high school in Italy. But the teenager from Cheyenne, Wyo., wisely played up her experience abroad (her 4.0 GPA and top-notch board scores didn't hurt, either) and was accepted. "I probably would have fit well at a number of schools," she admits, "but Dartmouth was the only place I could see myself walking across the greens. It was a gut reaction."If you lack the same certainty but clinching a slot before New Year's is appealing, consider other early admissions plans. Early action is a nonbinding alternative that allows you to apply by November 1 and hear back before the regular application deadline. Some highly selective schools require that you submit only one early action application--called single-choice early action--meaning you can't apply early elsewhere. Another option is to apply early to rolling admissions, where an application that arrives in the fall may stand out more than one that arrives with most of the others in January.1. Which one of the following statements is NOT true of early decision?[A] Early decision is a common strategy adopted by universities to secure high rate of student enrollment.[B] Early decision begins to be abandoned by top American universities.[C] Early decision is a special treatment for rich students, athletes and minorities.[D] Early decision will still be in practice for a fairly long time.2. The major disadvantage of early decision is that_____[A] students can enjoy a less attractive the financial aid package if he chooses early decision.[B] it excludes students who are from lower social class or poor family background.[C] it does not allow students to choose the other better schools.[D] it excludes students who want to have comparison shopping.3. What Sarah Wilburn wants to suggest students is that_____[A] early decision is not so advantageous as people think. [B] students should not regard early decision as the sole way to college.[C] students should evaluate themselves objectively before making early decision.[D] students should not limit themselves in early decision.4.Wyo applied to Dartmouthbecause_____[A] she was quite confident due to her rich experience of studying abroad. [B] the university’s beautiful lawn aroused her affection.[C] she found Dartmouth the only one that fit her after researching a bunch of universities.[D] her 4.0 GPA and top-notch board scores were not so ideal.5. The following options can be adopted by students lacking certainty of which school to apply to except_____[A] applying to early action.[B] applying to rolling admissions.[C] applying to early decision.[D] applying single-choice early action.文章剖析:这篇文章主要讲述了美国的提前择校制度。

Chapter 10The Alchemists of FinanceExercises1. Questions on the text1)Wha t’s the main difference between commercial banks and investmentbanks? In today's business environment, the main business of commercial banks is to collect deposits and make loans, while that of investment banks is to underwrite stocks and bonds and advise companies on mergers and acquisitions.2)Why do investment banks try to keep quiet about their big profits?Investment banks try to keep quiet about their big profits for two major reasons: first, they are under more scrutiny by regulators and investors; second, private equity and hedge funds have overtaken them in raising money and making excessive bets.3)What changes have taken place in the financial markets since the 1980s?The main changes since 1980s have been the rapid growth of financial instruments with unprecedented breadth, depth and richness, brought out by technology and innovation. Examples of those financial instruments are public and private debt securities and derivatives.4)Why do bankers and regulators worry about a possible collapse of aninvestment bank? They worry about a possible collapse of an investment bank because such an event will have serious implications for the whole financial system, and it is vital to know how such institutions evolve, how they handle risks and how well those risks are spread around the financial system.5)Which three factors can explain the huge profit for investment banks? Those factors are: first, the alchemist's trick of turning debt (mostly leaden) into derivatives (mostly liquid); second, the emergence of a new class of leveraged client (hedge funds and private equity); third, seeking out new capital markets and clients around the world. Meanwhile, in all these pursuits the banks are now using their own money, to differing degrees.6)What does the expression “the wild east〞refer to?That expression refers to the new markets emerging in Europe and Asia. The introduction of the euro in 1999 and the rapid growth of economies in those regions have attracted investment banks.7)What makes London an impressive rival to New York as a global financialcenter?London has become an impressive rival to New York as a global financial center because: first, London trades a wide range of assets and is regulated on the spot;second, London is a hub for Europe and continent European countries can raise capital there; third, London is also regarded as a springboard for emergingmarkets such as China and Russia.8)How do investment banks manage the risks?Investment banks try to find the most talented people to handle the intricate assets;they measure the correlations between different financial instruments in an attempt to spread risk; they invest hundreds of millions of dollars a year in technologies to measure and stress-test risks; they also try to boost their risk-weighted capital.9)According to the text, what’s the relationship between revenue and risk infinance? The relationship between revenue and risk is fundamental in finance. Risk-taking is awarded by possible high revenue. Low risk often means less revenue. However, in order to gain more revenue, you need to take more risks. You should carefully calculate the risk and balance it against revenue beforehand, or you will pay a high price for foolish investment bet.10)Which one is more important to the growth of the finance industry, innovation or regulation?Based on the text, both innovation and regulation are vital to the healthy growth of the finance industry. Without innovation, investors have fewer places to gain returns on their money and those seeking money would have much more difficulties in obtaining it. Thus innovation boosts the rapid growth of finance industry and brings benefits to more people both in developed countries and developing countries. However, innovation without proper regulation, such as the securities that no one knows how to exactly measure their risk, could lead the growth of the finance industry to a disastrous end.2.
