They say reduced lung growth could cause the babies to suffer breathing problems and lung disease later in life. Doctors in Boston, Massachusetts studied 1 100 children. The mothers of some of the children smoked, the othermothers did not. Doctors found that the lungs of the children whose mothers smoked were 8% less developed than the lungs of the children whose mothers did not smoke, and that the children whose mothers smoked developed 20% more cold and breathing diseases than other children later in life.Another recent study found that children had a greater chance of developing lung cancer if their mothers smoked. The study also showed that the danger of lung cancer increased only for sons and not for daughters, and that the father’s smoking did not affect a child’s chance of developing lung cancer.1. Mother who smokes before her child is born may _______.A. slow the growth of her baby’s lungB. cause her baby to suffer breathing problems and lung disease later in lifeC. make her child develop lung cancerD. These machines can do jobs in places that are too dangerous for humans. For example, they are being developed to work in nuclear power center, deep under the oceans and in outer space.John Marrit, a psychologist(心理学家) in Williamsburg Massachusetts, helped develop the new machine. This is how they work. A machine is placed in an area far away from the person who operates it. The person wears special hard hat with television screens and sound equipment. The screens and sound equipment let the person see and hear exactly what the machine is seeing and hearing. Mr. Marrit says this gives the person the feeling of being in the same place as the machine. The idea, he says, is being there without going there. The person uses an electronic control to make the machine move. The machine copies the person’s movements exactly. If the person raises his right arm, the machine raises the right arm, too. This means an expert can do a dangerous job while staying in the safe place. For example, a person can direct the machine to destroy a bomb without going near the bomb himself.1. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”— the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument(纪念碑) and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place. Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. AAfter Mom died, I began visiting Dad every morning before I went to work. He was weak and moved slowly, but he always had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with an unsigned note reading, “Drink your juice.” Such a note, I knew, was as far as Dad had ever been able to go in expressing his love. In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned Mom, “Why doesn’t Dad love me?” Mom frowned, “Who said he doesn’t love you?” “Well, he never tells me,” I complained. “He never tells me either,” she said, smiling. “But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food and clothes, and to pay for this house. That’s how your father tells us he loves us.”I nodded slowly. I understood in my head, but not in my heart. I still wanted my father to put his arms around me and tell me he loved me. Dad owned and operated a small scrap (片)metal business, and after school I often hung around while he worked. Dad handfed scrap steel into a device that chopped (剁碎) it as cleanly as a butcher chops a rack of ribs. The machine looked like a giant pair of scissors, with blades thicker than my father’s body. If he didn’t feed those terrifying blades just right, he risked serious injury. “Why don’t you hire someone to do that for you?” Mom asked Dad one night as she bent over him and rubbed his aching shoulders with a strong smelling liniment. “Why don’t you hire a cook?” Dad asked , giving her one of his rare smiles. Many years later, during my first daily visit, after drinking the juice my father had squeezed for me, I walked over, hugged him and said, “I love you, Dad.” From then on I did this every morning. My father never told me how he felt about my hugs, and there was never any expression on his face when I gave them.1. The author’s father always prepared a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice for him because ______.A. that was the author’s favorite.B. he was sure the author would be thirsty.C. the author was always complaining.D. that was a gesture of love.2. The author’s father didn’t hire a helper because ______.A. his job was too dangerous.B. his job required high skills.C. he wanted to save money.D. he was not good at communicating with others.3. What would be the best title for the passage?A. I Just Couldn’t Understand my Father.B. My Father Never Loved Me.C. Silent Fatherly Love.D. My Hard-working Father.【答案】1. D 2. C 3.

They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian-born Hart. The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every fortnight.(= two weeks)The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people. ―People have lots of negative(消极的)attitudes towards forgiveness,‖ he said. ―People confuse (把……混同)forgiveness with forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one(积极的态度)‖.Hart and his team have made instructions to provide the training needed.―The main idea is to give you guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitudes toward the person you are angry with,‖ said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project, Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people ―want to get free of the past‖.47. People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effect after (明显效果) a few days –they think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours, some may have hallucination (幻觉).There were no rules about sleep. Generally speaking, grown-ups sleep about 7 and a half hours each night and probably more than 60 percent get between 7 or 8 hours. But perhaps eight percent are quite happy with 5 hours or less, and four percent or so find that they want ten hours or more. If you fell all right you’re probably getting enough sleep. The important thing is not to2 worry how much other people get –their needs may be different.
