YUNNANYunnan is situated in a mountainous area, with high elevations in the northwest and low elevations in the southeast. Most of the population lives in the eastern part of the province. In the west, the relative height from mountain peaks to river valleys can be as much as 3,000 metres . Yunnan is rich in natural resources and has the largest diversity of plant life in China. Of the approximately 30,000 species of higher plants in China, Yunnan has perhaps 17,000 or more. Yunnan's reserves of aluminiums , lead , zinc and tin are the largest in China, and there are also major reserves of copper and nickel.Yunnan is noted for a very high level of ethnic diversity. It has the second highest number of ethnic groups among the provinces and autonomous regions in China, after Xinjiang (which has forty-seven ethnic groups). Among the country's 56 recognised ethnic groups, twenty-five are found in Yunnan. Some 38% of the province's population are members of minorities, including the Yi,Bai,Hani,Tai,Dai,Miao,Lisu,Hui,Lahu,Va,Nakhi,Yao,Tibetan,Jingpo,Blang,Pumi,N u,Achang,Jinuo,Mongolian,Derung,Manchu,Sui,and Buyi. Several other groups are represented, but they live neither in compact settlements nor do they reach the required threshold of five thousand to be awarded the official status of being present in the province. On the steep slopes in the west livestock is raised and timber, a valuable resource, is cut (teak in the southwest).Yunnan's cultural life is one of remarkable diversity. Archaeological findings have unearthed sacred burial structures holding elegant bronzes in Jinning, south of Kunming. In Zhaotong in northeastern Yunnan, there has been discovered, frescos of the Jin Dynasty(265-420). Many Chinese cultural relics have been discovered in later periods. The lineage of tribal way of life of the indigenous peoples persisted uninfluenced by modernity until the mid-20th century. Introduction of Yunnan Province
Yunnan Province is located in the most south-west of China. Yunnan means beautiful
clouds in the southwest. So, Yunnan is a land of natural beauty and mystery. Kunming, the
capital city,called Spring city, is well known for its diverse cultures, breath-taking natural
scenery and pleasant climate.
Yunnan province covers an area of about 400 thousand square kilometers with a
population of about 45million, of which minorities make up one third or so, that is about
16million. Yunnan is home to 26 ethic minorities which give a rich color to the land. They
contributed with their colorful costumes, their traditional songs and dances to the attractive
life.
Yunnan’s climate is characterized by small seasonal change in temperature, great
difference in daytime temperature and regional contrast between dry and wet seasons. The
average temperature in summer is 19℃-22℃. Rainfall is abundant in the area and occurs
mainly in May and October each year.
Due to peculiar(strange and rare) geographical environment, there are about 30,000 kinds
of plants as well as numerous rare animals living in Yunnan, so Yunnan enjoys a
reputation of “world garden” and “Kingdom of animals”.
Among the attractions in Yunnan, Xishuangbanna is famed for its wild herds of
elephants and its swarms of peacocks, whose graceful pictures can put professional dancer to
shame.
Some festivals such as The Torch Festival of Yi nationality, makes you forget to leave.
Entering Yunnan, you enter the Dongba culture of Naxi nationality, Dai minority culture of
Dali, and also entering a remarkable folk-custom full with myths, dances, paintings, and
ancient music.
Yunnan is a colored province. Apart from its minorities, rare aninals, mines, the most
impressive of Yunnan is the sky in Kuming. Why Kunming is called Spring City? Just
because it has clear bule ,and the clouds in the air are so white and thin that you can’t help
touching them. From the sky, we can see the whole city clearly.
