The appeal of the interview has everything to do with the human factor. Most people believe that they are a reasonable judge of character and trust their instinctive feeling. We might use some kind of test to aid theselection process, but we usually pick a candidate who interviews well, has good qualifications and impressive work record. But suppose the candidate lies or is less than completely honest. “This can be a serious problem for employers”, explains Alan Conrad, Chief Executive at Optimus Recruiment. “The most difficult liars to find are those who tell half-truths rather than complete lies.”Research shows that up to 75 percent of resumes are inaccurate on purpose. The most common practice is omission.Interviewer should therefore concentrate on areas of uncertainy such as gaps between periods of employment and job descriptions that seem strange. “Focusing on these areas will force candidates to tell the truth or become increasingly dishonest. This is usually when people signal their anxiety by their body language. Sweat on the upper lip, false smiles and nervous hand movements all indicate discomfort.”Conrad does not suggest an aggressive policy-style interview technique , but insists that close inspection of a resume is absolutely essential. Only by asking the right questions can you confirm the suitability of the candidate or put pressure on those who are being less than completely honest.21. Coots need to be tricky because of the nunsual way the animals. Compete: One coot will put its eggs secretly into another’s nest to trick the host into raising the invader’s eggs. But nest owners use their wits to fight back, Lyon finds.Over four summers, Lyon monitored 400 coot nests near Williams Lake in central British Columbia, tagging the eggs with a marker. Of these , 160 coot nests received eggs from unrelated coots. The hosts generally were not fooled, however,. About half the time, coot parents rejected thestrange eggs completely, usually by burying them deep in the nest.“Foreign eggs were not disappearing by chance ---and that can only mean the birds were recognizing them, ”Lyon says. Apparently , the coots were alerted by the unfamiliar colors and patterns on the foreign eggs. In other cases, the parents pushed the foreign eggs to an unfavorable position at the border area of the nest, where there is less heat for hatching.Even if a mother coot didn’t remove the foreign eggs from her nest, she continued to lay a normal hatch number of her own eggs, despite theapparent extra foreign eggs. Lyon thinks that means the coots somehow kept a count of both their own eggs an d the suspicious ones. “That coots can distinguish their own eggs from the foreign ones is a rare but very convincing example of counting wild animal world,” the ecologistconcluded.26. It is reached by a delightful road that drops down 700 meters over two huge "steps" of rock to the sea.Tourists go down to Apollonia in the afternoon, after they have spent the morning in Cyrene. Both places were cities long ago, and they are full of interesting and beautiful ruins. There is more to be seen in Cyrene -- on the ground, you understand. If you want to know the excitement of an underwater city, Apollonia is the place. Some ruins of Apollonia are on the mainland. Some are on an island a thousand meters from the short. The rest now lie between, under eight or ten meters of water. The sea is warm, seldom rough. It is often almost as clear as glass. On a still day, then, swim out towards the island. Swim under water as much as you can, with your eyes open. Look down.First you see a street, with houses and shops on both sides. Their roofs have fallen in, but the walls are standing. Some shops have a big stone table -- a counter perhaps -- and stone shelves. At the end of this street you come to a square. It has a wide pavement all around, and some buildings open directly on to the pavement. Were they cafes Did the waiters put tables and chairs on the pavement in summer long agoOver two thousand years ago the king of Egypt visited the city. He brought his daughter Cleopatra with him. These halls are popularly called "dorms." Residence halls may offer various types of living accommodations. There are single rooms, in which a student lives alone but there probably are a good many more double rooms, which two students share. Some dorms have sets of rooms, where small groups of students have separate bedrooms but share a bathroom and maybe a study room. There are usually a number of conveniences available for those living in university residence halls. Most have washing machines and clothes dryers for use by the residents. Many dorms have kitchens where students can prepare light meals. Residence halls generally provide not only room and board but public rooms and recreational facilities娱乐设施and sometimes study rooms for their use.If you live in a dormitory you need to know what the rules and regulations are. Meals usually are served at only certain hours, and you must be there at those hours if you expect to eat. There may be only certain hours when visitors may come, or they may be limited to certain areas of the dormitory. Often cooking in bedrooms is prohibited禁止, and the use of certain pieces of electrical equipment such as coffee pots or hair dryers may be limited. Living in a residence hall carries certain obligation义务. You have to be considerate of others, especially during study hours. Telephone calls and visits by friends should be short. You have to cooperate in keeping the room as neat as possible. It is sometimes hard to be tolerant of another person's habits that may differ from your own.21. Residence halls in American universities provide ______.A single rooms shared by two students.B apartments for small groups of students.C double rooms for two students.D separate rooms with a common bathroom.22. Living in university halls is convenient because ______.A meals are served at any timeB most halls provide various facilitiesC public rooms are available for visitorsD all have study rooms for their own use23. Living in a residence hall you have to ______.A do your best to keep the room cleanB form a habit of other'sC have your phone calls in your roomD study hard during study hoursQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.Passage ThreeWhat is a good listener Students who feel they are say it is because they pay attention; remember what the person says; and ask questions based on what the other has said; or it is because they like people and are interested in them. They feel they are poor listeners when they think about something else while the other is talking or when they're tired, or not interested in what she or he is talking about. In fact, there are a variety of ways to listen, just as there are a variety of ways to say something. Human beings are complex and concealing. Often we don't say what we want to say, or say exactly the opposite of what we want to say. Sometimes, we aren't honest or direct with another because we think we don't have the right or are afraid of what will happen if we are. The body "talks", too, sometimes more honestly than the tongue. These different ways of talking need different ways of listening. To keep the seesaw going in conversations and in relationships, we need to understand and use these different ways, especially if our goal is to be a caring, thoughtful person. By knowing how to listen in various ways, you can be accurate in picking up messages no matter how they are masked or distorted变形了的 or how they are delivered. Some messages are heard just by listening silently; some, by holding a hand or giving a hug拥抱. But to be able to respond accurately, you need to hear accurately. Most people listen only with their ears. Too few listen with their hearts as well as their ears, listening to the other's, sharing of his or her hopes, joys, fears.26. According to the passage, listening only with ears may happen to us when ______.A we are emotionally tiredB we are physically disabledC we are so interested in the topicD we are asked many questions27. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about a good listenerA He can feel what the speaker thinks.B He can share the speaker's feeling.C He can remember what the speaker says.D He can listen with his heart.28. The purpose in writing the second paragraph is to ______.A demonstrate why we are not honest in communicationB explain how our body “talks”C illustrate ways used by people in speakingD show that understanding one's speech is not an easy job29. The word "seesaw" Line 1, Para. 3 probably means ______.A communicationB purposeC understandingD friendship30. According to the passage our failure to give proper response to thespeaker is probably because ______.A we misunderstand what he saysB we don't like the speakerC he speaks in a distorted wayD he speaks in a different languageQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Passage FourSuperstition 迷信 is a difficult question. We cannot quite say that superstition in Britain is dead. Its history is too long and too recent for that, and indeed you will find many remains of it in modem Britain. But they are only connected chiefly with vague beliefs of good luck and bad luck. It is unlucky, for instance, to walk under a ladder, or to spill salt, or break a mirror, or to have anything to do with number 13; whereas a horseshoe brings good luck, and people jokingly "touch wood" to prevent the return of a past misfortune. There are still many strange country remedies against sickness which are obviously superstitions. Most of all, there is still a surprising amount of interest in fortune-telling, e.g. in the form of "horoscopes" 占星术in newspapers and women's magazines-though for most people this is nothing more than an amusement, which they may well be slightly ashamed of.But the real measure of superstition is fear. In this sense there is no superstition in Britain. British people as a whole do not believe in evil influences or evil spirits. Sickness and misfortune do not come from devils, but are the result of chance or foolishness or inefficiency. Devils belong only to history books. Devils exist only in the mind -- usually the minds of others. Magic is simply an interesting word for performing tricks.Fairies童话故事中的仙女 are pretty little winged creatures in "fairy stories" for children and any adult who believed in fairies or magic or devils would be considered slightly mad. Thus, modern Britain has largely emerged from superstition, and the future seems to consist not of devils, but of matter and machines.31. The author's purpose in writing this passage is to ______.A criticize British people's superstitious beliefsB show British people's attitudes towards superstitious beliefs todayC describe various superstitious beliefs still practiced in modern BritainD emphasize the influence of superstition upon the British people32. According to the remaining superstitious beliefs in Britain, all thefollowing are concerned with bad luck except ______.A break a mirrorB walk under a ladderC touch woodD pour salt out33. For most British people today, a horoscope column in newspapers is ______.A just for funB for making moneyC only for womenD for fortune-telling34. In the future, British people will ______.A become slaves of machinesB remove fairies from their lifeC get rid of their beliefs of GodD have no superstitious beliefs35.

Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A,B,C,D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Passage OneI knew a man who was asked to be the new dean(院长)of the College of Business of a large university. When he first arrived, he studied the situation the college faced and felt that what it needed most was money. He recognized that he had a unique capacity to raise money, and he developed a real sense of vision about fund-raising as his primary function. This created a problem in the college because past deans had focused mainly on meeting day-to-day faculty needs. This new dean was never there. He was running around the country trying to raise money for research. But he was not attending to the day-to-day things as the previous dean had. The faculty, who were used to working with the person at the top,had to work through his administrative assistant. The faculty became so upset with his absence that they sent a delegation to the president of the university to demand a new dean or a fundamental change in his leadership style. The president, who knew what the dean was doing, said,”Relax. He has a good administrative assistant.Give him some more time.”Within a short time, the money started pouring in and the faculty began to recognize the vision. It wasn’t long until every time they saw the dean, they would say,”Get out of here!We don’t want to see you. Go out and bring in more funds.Yourad ministrative assistant runs this office better than anyone else.”This man admitted to me later that the mistake he made was not doing enough team building ,enough explaining, enough educating about what he was trying to accomplish. From him I learned a powerful lesson. We need to constantly be asking ourselves,”What is needed out there, and what is my unique strength?”16. The new dean thought that the most important thing for him to do was to _____.A.gain a sense of visionB.set up a primary goalC.win the trust of the facultyD. raise money17.The new dean was different from the past deans in that ________.A.he was less responsibleB.he didn’t attend to daily thingsC.he had an administrative assistantD.he didn’t lik e to talk with others18.We can learn from the passage that the faculty _____.A.was not well paid for their workB.didn’t understand the new dean’s ideas at firstC.had a conflict with the president of the universityD.didn’t want to work with the administrative assistant19. The faculty would ask the new dean to get out because they _______.A.were upset by his leadership styleB.wanted to get rid of himC.were unhappy with his explanationD.wanted him to bring back more money20.What was the mistake the new dean realized he had made?A.He was absent all the year around.B.He was insensitive to the faculty’s needs.C.He didn’t communicate well with the faculty.D.He didn’t work hard to accomplish his goal.Passage TwoIs new technology damaging our ability to communicate?Fingers flying ,we can blog(写博客文章),email, and enter chat rooms. But ,as we type our millions of words, something is being lost.As our virtual skills increase,I wonder if our ability to communicate using speech is on the decline.Young people send me dozens of emails from schools and universities. They often attach long lists of questions,to which they want detailed responses. Time is short, so my reply is usually that they can phone me and I’ll do my best to answer. They very rarely do,at least partly because their oral and telephone skills are less developed than their ability to type, text and email.Yet to adapt an old business saying,a meeting is worth five phone calls and a phone call is worth five emails.Direct communication can quickly lead to bonding and trust.People are more likely to reveal what they are thinking when they actually speak to another person. Most are wary of committing themselves in writing. The great tragedy, of course,is that the phone was invented before the computer. If it had been the other way around,Internet forums would now be filled with the news:”Have you heard (type, type, type)? There is this amazing new device(type, type). Now you can talk directly with people(type, type, type).Without all this typing.”Marketing would do the rest and college would be rushing to develop new course in telephone skills. But,as it is ,we are stuck with the supremacy of the typed word and it is getting in the way of our ability to look people in the eye and talk. We should reconsider the technology in which the speed of our fingers is more important than the quality of our voices.21.According to the author, young people today don’t ______.A. like to communicate using speechB.like to communicate with peopleC.know how to communicate with peopleD.know how to ask questions in communication22. According to Paragraph 3, compared with meetings, e-mails are _____.A.more efficientB. more interestingC.less efficientD.less interesting23. In Paragraph 4,”wary of ”can be replaced by “_______”A.good atB.happy abouted toD.cautious about24. The author believes that if the phone had been invented after the computer, people would ___________.A.be eager to learn how to use the phoneB.be glad to have both means of communicationC.still prefer typing words on the computerD.show little interest in the phone25.Which of the following can best describe the author’s attitude towards the communication using typed words today?A.Concerned.B. Curious.C.Indifferent.D.Impatient.Passage ThreeMost Americans are very conscious of their health and try to maintain a nutritious diet and daily routines to maintain good health.Yet, for many years the tobacco and liquor industries have tried to project the image of style and fashion for those who use their products. Most have learned, however , that the dangers caused to health by tobacco and alcohol can no longer be denied or ignored. The campaigns to alert the public to the evils of these two social drugs have been intense and effective .However, most people dislike being warned that they shouldn’t do something. It is a kind of psychological resistance.Yet, all tobacco and liquor products must now contain a warning on thepackage. The warning is simple, but the message is clear:smoking and drinking are hazardous to health. The wording may vary, but it is phrased in such a way as to draw the attention of the consumer to the danger. On TV all tobacco advertising is legally banned, and every ad in a magazine must display the warning. There are many public notices on trains and buses giving out the warning that smoking is linked to lung cancer and other lung and heart diseases. The warning against alcohol consumption is of a different kind.It goes out especially to women who are pregnant and anyone operating a car or electrical machinery. A pregnant woman can cause damage to her baby by drinking alcohol. Also anyone operating a machine runs the risk of an accident which could be fatal.Such warnings appear on all wine bottles and even an appatently harmless can of beer.26.Tobacco and liquor ads try to make people believe that smoking and drinking will ______________.A.make them look fashionableB.help them keep a nutritious dietC.make them conscious of their healthD.show their healthy images to others27.In the case of smoking and drinking, most people ________.A.ignore the campaigns against themB.are aware of the dangers they causeC.do not really believe their dangersD.participate in campaigns against them28.It can be inferred from the passage that the campaign against smoking is ______.A.short-livedB.long-standingC.widespreadD.well organized29.Tobacco advertising is _________.A.popularizedB.restrictedC.bannedD.disliked30.Warnings against drinking are usually directed at _________.A.civiliansB.car driversC.young peopleD.some groups of peoplePassage FourToday, there is no such thing as a “typical”college student.People of all ages are enrolled in colleges.Though the concept of college may be the same for all students, the stress and future goals are different. The college students most people think of usually range in age from 18-21,and are most often away from home for the first time.As a result, they now have choices and no parent to tell them what to do. They are responsible for theirown lives, needing to learn to manage their time and find a job, while attending school. They enter this new world with the anticipation of freedom, fun and a good job after graduation. The new faces in the college are usually 30 years old or older, and are returning to school after several years away. They are starting their college education, after raising a family and now ready to do something for themselves.Their lives are considerably different from their younger classmates. They have been on their own for a while, and are concerned about family, responsibilities, work, and the adjustment of being back in school after some years. Most important to them are the hopes of a new career or a job promotion after they graduate.Though they may come to college for different reasons, the result is the same, It is their chance to make a better life for themselves or their families. As the younger generation is looking for freedom in their lives, those who are returning to school also see freedom. The same opportunities were not available 20 years ago.So in our college and universities, there is a new sense of hope and dreams.Where once stood only the youth of our future, they are now joined by people of all ages who share the dreams of a better life.31.The passage is mainly concerned with the change of ________.A.college administrationB.college studentsC.college coursesD.college life32.
