COURTESY PAUL BOZYMOWSKI﹣Three New York City police officers paid for a woman's groceries rather than arresting her.As temperatures approached 90 degrees in New York City last July 4th, three police officers ducked into a whole Foods Market to get something cold to drink. What they walked into was a heated human drama.Once inside, the cops, Lt. Louis Sojo and Officers Esanidy Cuevas and Michael Rivera, were approached by a store security guard who asked for help with a suspected shoplifter. The woman in question didn't have the look of a career criminal. She was obviously scared and her cheek were wet with tears. The cops peeked inside her bag. "All we saw was containers of food" Cuevas told CBS New York."I'm hungry, " she explained quietly.Caught red﹣handed. the woman no doubt expected to be sentenced to jail for the crime of being hungry while poor. But the cops had other ideas. "We'll pay for her food, " Sojo told the surprised security guard. There'd been no discussion among the three men. It went unsaid. Instead, they picked up the Woman's bag and accompanied her to a cash register, where each look out $10 to pay the tab. She would not be arrested today. All the woman could do was weep in gratitude. Covering her face with a kerchief and drying her eyes, she repeated, "Thank you, thank you."She wasn't the only one touched by this act of mercy. "It was a very beautiful, genuine moment, " says Paul Bozymowski, who was at the store He was so taken by what he'd witnessed that he posted a photo on twitter for all to see.But attention was never what the officers sought. They were driven by a far more common emotion as sojo told CNN, "When you look at someone's face and see that they need you and they're actually hungry, it's pretty difficult as a human being to walk away from something like this."(1)What can be learnt about the woman from the passage?________A She had stolen in the shop several times before.B She was caught on the spot by three police officers.C She was found innocent and would not bearrested. Beekeeper Pablo Alvarez sits near his hives(蜂箱)and points up into a cloudless, blue Chilean sky. This season, Alvarez says, there is much less bee traffic than usual Spring rains once led to fields of flowers in Casablanca, a town on the Chilean pacificcoast. Now, there is just dry earth. He says he lost half of his hives by early spring. "At the end of winter, bees need flowers to grow and make honey, " he told Reuters reporters. No flowers means no food, he added. His story is common among beekeepers across much of central Chile. A severe, years﹣long lack of rain is making life difficult for honey bees. Concern over how the changing environment has affected be bees has reached the highest levels of government in Chile. The country has already provided large amounts of money for farmers suffering from the drought. In August, it said it would include the "costs" of climate change in future agency budgets."We all know the importance that bees have in agricultural production, " Agriculture Minister Antonio Walker recently told reporters. Honey bees pollinate(授粉)many of Chile's major export crops, including blue berries, apples and cherries.Already agriculture officials have ordered a state of emergency in more than 100 farm communities throughout central Chile. Though dry periods are normal from time to time, officials say climate change has made the current dry period longer and more severe. Rainfall in September in Santiago was down nearly 80 percent compared to the historical average.Alvarez has begun taking care of an organic bee yard filled with native, drought﹣resistant plants. 高考英语模拟试卷一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分)ASeventeen-year-old Sariah Estrada didn't expect to receive anything in return when she saved a drowning man on Marianne Beach in Blanchisseuse earlier this year. However, for her random act of kindness,Estrada was awarded the HummingbirdMedal-Bronze for her bravery, loyalty and devotion to Trinidad and Tobago on Monday,September 24,when the country celebrated its 42nd year as a republic.President Paula-Mae Weekes presented the national award to her.In July of this year,Estrada along with two friends went to the Marianne Beach to relax.Upon leaving the beach,Estrada and her friends noticed a man struggling in the water.Immediately, she and her friends sprang into action. The teens borrowed a body board from some people on the beach and swam to the man's rescue. She said when they reached the man,he was already unconscious and they dragged him out of the water on the body board.Estrada remembered what she learned during a life-saving course the week before and quickly started pumping the man's chest. After several attempts, she was successful and the young man's life was saved. In an interview with LoopTT,the teenager said while she is grateful for the award, she wasn't expecting anything in return."This award was never expected because I thought of helping someone as an act of humanity and never looked for anything in return, but the award is well appreciated. As I reflect on the action I took,I felt as though I could help this person as I have the proper training. The week before the incident I participated in a basic life support-training course offered by the North Central Regional Health Authority."Estrada explained. She said she intends to continue assisting people. The national award receiver also had this message for the youths of Trinidad and Tobago.I would like to encourage the young people of Trinidad and Tobago to strive for excellence, never sell yourself short by believing that you cannot do what you desire, all things are possible and hard work surely brings success."1.It can be learned from the passage that Estrada ______ .A. saved the man by simply dragging him out of the waterB. shared the award with her friends for their heroic deedC. was motivated to save the drowning man by reputationD. owed the successful rescue to her proper training2.What do the underlined words "sell yourself short" in paragraph 8 probably mean?______A. 2020届绍兴市柯桥中学高三英语一模试卷及答案

2020届绍兴市柯桥中学高三英语一模试卷及答案第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项ABird migration is described as the regular, seasonal movement of bird populations from one place to another and back again. The longer days and rich food of the northern summer provide greater chances for birds to feed their young. The longer daylight hours and enormous food resources allow birds to lay larger eggs than those of related non-migratory species that remain in the tropics all year round. As the days shorten in autumn and the breeding period is over, the birds return to warmer regions where the available food supply differs little with the seasons changing. The advantages of migration make up for the high stress, physical exertion(消耗), and other risks of the migration.Day length is the primary environmental factor that encourages birds to prepare for migration. They have an increased appetite which results in weight gaining, giving them the fat reserves that provide energy for their migratory flight. They also show more activity at night, which is when most birds migrate. While the length of day is the primary reason for migration, birds also respond to temperature changes. For example, if a spring is late and the temperature is lower than normal, birds delay migration; if a spring is early, birds also begin migration early. The timing of the migratory cycle must allow birds to arrive on the breeding site so that there is time tobuild a breeding place, mate, lay the eggs, and hatch the young before the rich food is available to feed the young in the nest. Similarly, if birds wait until the climate in their northern breeding grounds becomes tolerable(可忍受的), there will be no time togain the necessary weight that provides the energy needed for their southbound migration.1. It's a huge loss for human history.Salt crystals(结晶)building up on the walls are a key part of the problem, the study suggests. These salt crystals go into the cave walls, changing sizes as temperatures rise and fall. This process causes the rock to slowly break down.Salt crystals may become larger when exposed to repeated changes between wet conditions and periods of drought. These kinds of changes are expected to become more obvious as the climate continues to warm.In particular, the researchers say, climate change may cause more intense El Nino(厄尔尼诺)events in the future. These events can strengthen the kinds of conditions that help salt crystals form Scientists are still debating the exact influence of climate change on El Nino, a natural climate cycle that drives changing patterns of warming and cooling in thePacific Ocean. The new study, led by Jillian Huntley, examined 11 ancient cave art sites in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The researchers found evidence of salt formation at all 11 sites. It's merely a small part There are more than 300 known eave art sites around the region. A new study finds that happiness comes from exercise. People who exercise actively bring themselves happiness equal to earning an extra $25,000 ayear.Instead of recording extra hours at work in hopes of getting a raise, maybe you should hit the gym instead, as it could make you just as happy as that extra money. An interesting new study, published in the Lancet, found that people who are physically active have a greater sense of well—being than those who are inactive-and that active individuals feel as good as inactive people who earn $ 25,000 more per year.Researchers from Oxford and Yale Universities used data gathered from more than 1.2milion Americans. They were asked, “How many times have you felt mentally unwell in the past30 days. for example, due to stress, depression, or emotional problems?” Participants were also asked about their exercise habits and were able to choose from 75 diverse physical activities, including doing housework and childcare, running, weightlifting, andcycling. The researchers found that people who exercise regularly feel bad for an average of 35 days per year, while inactive people feel bad for an additional 18 days. All exercise types were associated with a lower mental health burden. Social physical activities(that is to say, team sports such as football, basketball, etc)had an even more positive effect, which can best help people relax mind.It is possible for some to get too much exercise. From Business Insider'sreport on the study. “The mental health of those participants who exercised for longer than three hours a day suffered more than that of those who weren't particularly physically active.” The ideal amount seems to be three to five training sessions per week. lasting 30 to 60 minutes each. But the conclusion should be that any amount helps, so don't stress about hitting that perfect balance: “All exercise types were associated with a lower mental health burden than not exercising.”8. A COURTESY PAUL BOZYMOWSKI — Three New York City police officers paid for a woman’s groceries rather than arresting her. As temperatures approached 90 degrees in New York City last July 4th, three police officers ducked into a Whole Foods Market to get something cold to drink. What they walked into was a heated human drama. Once inside, the cops, Lt. Louis Sojo and Officers Esanidy Cuevas and Michael Rivera, were approached by a store security guard who asked for help with a suspected shoplifter. The woman in question didn’t have the look of a career criminal. She was obviously scared, and her cheeks were wet with tears. The cops peeked inside her bag. “All we saw was containers of food.” Cuevas told CBS New York. “I’m hungry,” she explained quietly.

Caught red-handed, the woman no doubt expected to be sentenced to jail for the crime of being hungry while poor. But the cops had other ideas. “We’ll pay for her food,” Sojo told the surprised security guard.
But attention was never what the officers sought. They were driven by a far more common emotion. As Sojo told CNN, “When you look at someone’s face and see that they need you and they’re actually hungry, it’s pretty difficult as a human being to walk away from something like this.”
