Anyway, the main point of that dialogue was about expressing preferences using "I like..." or "I prefer..." Easy enough.The grammar section on subject pronouns was pretty straightforward too. We already learned "he", "she", "it" and so on in earlier grades. Just had to recognize them in sentences. Though I have to admit, that exercise on replacing pronouns with nouns totally stumped me at first! I had to ask my English tutor for help on that one.Now Unit 2 - My Day - that was a doozy! Did you catch all those phrases for telling time? "Half past eight", "a quarter to nine", "ten to seven" - why can't they just use normal numbers?? The listening exercise on daily routines was OK once I got the hang of the time expressions. Memorizing vocabulary like "have a bath", "do homework", "go to bed" etc. wasn't too bad either.But oh man, that grammar bit on present tenses? Continuous, simple, differentiating between the two?? I'm still having nightmares about that! Why does English have to make things so complicated? Chinese is way easier - we just use 了for past tense and 着for continuous, no separating into "simple" and "progressive"! My brain melted trying to choose the right tense in that monster exercise.Thank goodness we moved on to Unit 3 - My Hobbies after that. This one was much more fun! I loved reading those stories about kids' different hobbies - everything from sports to musicto coding. And the new vocabulary was pretty interesting too - words like "gymnastics", "choreography", "animation" etc. Definitely expanded my horizons!The grammar point on adverbs of frequency was mercifully simple. Just words like "always", "usually", "sometimes", "never" and where to place them in sentences. A welcome relief after the tense torture of the last unit! Although...I guess I shouldn't speak too soon. When we started learning about the present perfect tense in this unit, I low-key wanted to bang my head against the wall. Just when I thought I had present tenses figured out, they throw a curveball like "have been" and "has gone"?? Why English, why??Anyway, let's press on to Unit 4 - Animals. This was a particularly enjoyable unit, at least in my opinion! I'm low-key obsessed with animals, so learning all those creature words like "antelope", "chimpanzee", "dromedary" was super fun. And some of the readings about interesting animal facts and behaviours were pretty cool too! Though I could have done without that scary story about the guy getting attacked by a lion...I had nightmares for weeks after that one.The grammar bit on quantifiers like "some", "any", "a lot of" etc. wasn't too difficult. And when we learned about past tenses,I was relieved to find it was nowhere near as complicated as present tenses. Sure, we had to learn different forms for regular and irregular verbs. But no separating into "simple" and "continuous" nonsense! Just straightforward stuff like "I played", "she went", "we saw" and so on. A welcome break, if you ask me.Which brings us to the final unit - Unit 5: Amazing People. I'll admit, when I first saw this unit, I was a bit apprehensive. Reading long biographical passages about people I've never heard of? Boring city, population me! But I actually ended up quite enjoying it in the end! The stories about people like Marie Curie, Yuri Gagarin, Lin Huiyin and their incredible achievements were super inspiring. Definitely broadened my horizons beyond my usual video games and Chinese history obsessions.Some of the new words related to careers and accomplishments were pretty fancy though. Words like "philanthropist", "prodigy", "expedition"...I may or may not have used a dictionary more than once! And that grammar on modal verbs like "can", "should", "must" - oof, that was a head-scratcher at times. When do you use "could" vs "was able to"? How is "may" different from "might"? Still a little hazy on some of the finer points there.But all in all, despite the constant headaches and frustrations, I've got to say - I actually enjoyed this semester's English textbook a fair bit! Sure, some parts made me want to bang my head against the desk. But I definitely learned a ton of useful new words and expressions. The readings opened my eyes to new topics I'd never really thought about before. And okay fine, maybe some of those grammar points will come in handy someday...I guess.Anywho, that's my take on our first semester English textbook!
