Listening to recordings and imitating (30 minutes);
/s/ & /z/
/s/ and /z/ are alveolar sounds. These fricatives are produced by forcing air between the tongue and the upper or lower teeth. /s/ is voiceless and /z/ is voiced.

/tʃ/ & /dʒ/

/tʃ/ & /dʒ/ are affricate sounds, produced by blocking off the breathstream between the tongue and gum ridge, for a stop and a fricative. The term affricate means “blend”, in this case, consisting of a stop and a fricative. Lip rounding will help to stabilize the sound.
/ʃ/ & /ʒ/

/ʃ/ and /ʒ/ are lingua-palatal fricatives. They are produced in much the same way as the /s/ and /z/, except that the tongue is farther back and the lips are rounded.
/h/

/h/ is a voiceless glottal fricative. It is simply a stream of air from the larynx directed through the open mouth.
heat, heed; hat, had; hear, here, hair, hare; hurt, heard; hot, horse; heart, hard; hold, whole, how, house; height, hide; hate, hay Hundreds of horses’ hard hoofs hit the hard high road. Hal heard Hans ate his own hot ham, so Hans’ own hot ham was eaten by Hans himself.

Introduction to how to pronounce the Fricatives & Affricates according to the manner of articulation (5 minutes)

If the stops completely block the air-stream for a time in the pronunciation, the fricatives (9 fricatives) only partially block it, thus causing the friction-like noise characteristic of these sounds. /tʃ/ & /dʒ/ are the two English affricates and they differ primarily in terms of voicing.
