A letter in Unit 4 NovelsDear studentsIn this unit we shall be looking at the major genre of literature, the novel. We have already spent some time on the short story. Short stories have the advantage that you can read them in one sitting. And you can grasp the ‘meaning’ of the story relatively easily. Novels are differnet. They are a lot longer than short stories and are also more complex and usually have more characters. When reading a novel, we enter a whole fictional world. In a sense, we live in that world for the duration of our reading of the novel. For example, in Jane Eyre (one of the novels we shall be looking at). We share the diappointments, hardships, hopes and fears, passions, love, joys and despair of the heroine. We enter her world and are immersed in it for a time. When we reach the end of a really good novel, we nearly always have a sense of regret—wishing the story would go on longer.Unfortunately, because we have limite time and space, it will not be possible to offer you complete novels to read. Instead, you will work on fairly shortextracts from a number of well-known novels. Hopefully, you will be sufficiently interested in these ‘taster dishes’that you will want to go on to enjoy the full ‘banquet’ by reading one or more complete novels later.I have chosen the extracts because they each illustrate a key aspect of the novel: setting, charcterisation, dialogue, point of view, etc. We shall also focus on beginnings and endings. Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys is based on the story of Jane Eyre but seen from the point of view of Mr. Rochester’s mad wife. [英文写作教程]第一课:记叙文(Narrative Essay)记叙是指叙述事件的经过表现,情景,人物的经历的一种文章体裁。
一般可分为两类型:第一是事实记叙,对事件进行写实性叙述,如新闻报导,传记,访问,游记等;第二是想像记叙,如小说,散文,故事等。
记叙文在叙述时最好能够令读者有置身现场的感觉,所以文章须要具体而生动,能绘声绘影,平时多留意身边发生的事情,多阅报章书刊,都可对情景的描写更传神。
记叙文的注意事项:(一)叙述的人称:(I)First-person narrator第一人称叙述:你可以当事人,即第一人称来叙述,把文章中的事情以“我”所见所闻来告诉读者,用主观的表现手法,给读者一种亲切自然的感觉,如同亲身经历一样,加强事件的可信性,直接抒发作者的思想情感,从而引起读者的共鸣。
(II)Third-person narrator第三人称叙述:你亦可以用旁观者的观点与角度来叙述事件,以客观的写作方法,能够充分反映事件中各人的感受及见解,以全知的视角来叙述。
(二)叙述的内容:一篇记叙文应注意交代清楚事情的始末,细节,以及线索,即是何时,何地,何事,何人和为何(when, where, what, who and why / how),全文有条有理,使读者易于明白。
1.事件:为了吸引读者的注意,可以从一些纠纷或交叉事件开展,直到高潮出现,再将问题解决。
2.人物:集中各主要人物的描写,记叙人物遇到的事情,及对人物有什么影响。
3.时式:一般多采用simple past tense 及active verbs.(三)叙述的方法:一般叙述的线索可分为以下方向:(I)以时间为线索,按时间的推移来发展;(II)以地点为线索,按地点的转移来发展;(III)以事件发展的过程为线索,或以人物出现的先后次序来展开;(IV)以事物的象徵意义为线索;(V)以人物的思想行为及认知来展开。
叙述的方法大致分三种:(I)顺叙:主要按作者的思路而开展,并根据事件发生经过及先后次序来叙述,或以时间来推移,地点的前后变化,人物的出现先后次序来叙述,而在叙述事情时避免太呆板,平铺直述,最好在顺中有折,描写多些环境与人物的变化。

In an instant he had fallen into the rushing water. The current sucked at his trembling legs and he lost his balance as he reached for the canoe. One hand clutched the broken gunwale of the vessel, and he dragged himself up to it. From then on it was a struggle of sheer will power against the brute power of the river.
