ALeon McCarthy, 12, was born without fingers on his left hand. That didn't stop him from being able to do many tasks. But Leon could not grasp more than one object at a time. So Leon's father, Paul, created a Prosthesis(假肢), using a 3D printer. Now Leon has fingers that open and close. “It was a do-it-yourself, father-and-son adventure,” says Paul. When Leon was a baby, his doctor advised his parents not to give him a prosthetic hand until he was in his early teens. “The doctor said Leon should first learn to get full use out of the hand he was born with,” says Paul. As Leon got older, his father looked into buying a prosthetic hand, which can cost as much as $30,000. Paul found a more affordable solution. One day, Paul discovered a video on the Internet about Robohand, a prosthesis created with a 3D printer. He downloaded the free instructions and called Robohand's creators for advice. They told him all he needed was a 3D printer—which costs around $2,000—and some materials.Luckily, Leon's school had recently purchased a 3D printer and it offered to help Paul build the hand for Leon. “We used a soccer shinguard(护胫), cardboard, and tape. They cost about $10,” says paul. With his new hand, Leon can do things better. “I can help my mom more, because now I can carry two grocery bags,” he says.Leon's father has already built several hands for Leon. The sight I saw was heartbreaking. The broken houses seemed to be weeping quietly. I couldn't describe how I felt. But something special among the debris (废墟) turned my day around.I joined a club to clean up the beach after the storm last November. As I removed the debris from the beach, I noticed an object with shiny buttons in the wet sand. It was a jacket, and I was excited since Halloween was coming and I thought I had found a great costume. After picking it up, I was able to see that the jacket was from West Point (西点军校), the United States Military Academy, and it had the name “deGavre” written inside. Kim soon ensured that the jacket had belonged to Chester Braddock deGavre, who was a 1933 graduate and a war hero, but passed away in 1993.I sent Kim a photo of the jacket and she posted it to the West Point Association of Graduates Facebook Page, asking if anyone could help us find the family. In less than two hours, someone had found and called the hero's wife, Teresa. Soon I started to receive personal messages from members of the deGavre family, their friends and others who were touched by the story and they found me on Facebook.Finding Chester deGavre's jacket and connecting to his family with the help of Facebook have been so meaningful to me. Many people think a telephone is essential. But I think it is a pest and a time waster. Very often you find it impossible to escape from some idle or curious chatter-box, or from somebody who wants something for nothing. If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out, or when you are taking your bath. Are you strong minded enough to ignore it, to say to yourself,“Ah, well, it will all be the same in a hundred years’ time” You are not. You think there may be some important news or messages for you. I can a ssure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Have you never rushed dripping from the bath, or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number? But you will say, you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of emergency—illness, an accident, or fire? Of course, you are right, but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity.I think perhaps I had better try to justify myself by trying to prove that wh at I like is good. I admit that in different circumstances—if I were a tycoon(business VIP),for instance, or bed ridden I might find a telephone essential. But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car essential.Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent; one is mechanical invention, the other is literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them. For I have just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be something important.1.The passage is mainly discussing _______.A. that we should be strong enough to ignore a phone callB. that important message will reach you sooner or laterC. whether it’s necessary to answer all ph one callsD. whether it is necessary to have a telephone提示:通读全文,尤其是文章的第一段和最后一段可以得出此结论。

Too much TV-watching can harm children's ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children. One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs. A second study ,looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year –olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don't prove that TV is the cause and don't ride out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年轻人)may watch lots of TV. Thei r study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages5 and 15. These with college degrees had watch an average of less than two hours of TV per week night during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2 1/2 hours for those who had no ed ucation beyond high school. In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest. While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to accumulating findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms.( ) 1. According to the California study, the low-scoring group might _________.A. have watched a lot of TVB. not be interested ted in mathC. be unable to go to collegeD. have had computers in their bedrooms( ) 2. What is the researchers' understanding of the New Zealand study results?A. Poorly motivated 26-year-olds watch more TV.B. Habits of TV watching reduce learning interest.C. TV watching leads to lower education levels of the 15-year-olds.D. The connection between TV and education levels is difficult to explain( ) 3. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?A. More time should be spent on computers.B. Children should be forbidden from watching TV.C. 'IV sets shouldn't be allowed in children's bedrooms.D. Further studies on high-achieving students should be done.( ) 4. What would be the best title for this text?A. Computers or TelevisionB. Effects of Television on ChildrenC. Studies on TV and College EducationD. Television and Children's Learning Habits1. A.细节理解题.根据第二段中Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs.可得出答案.2. D. 细节理解题. 根据第三段But the results don' prove that TV is the cause and don't ride t out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年轻人)may watch lots of TV. A little girl in my family got a typewriter for Christmas. Not a laptop. Nothing with a screen. Theold-fashioned manual kind.Typewriters had pretty much gone the way of dodo birds quite some years before my granddaughter was born. But it was the typewriter used by a journalist in the mo vie “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” that attracted her.Or maybe it was the way the typewriter was used. In the movie, Kit does old-fashioned journalism and writes stories that help right a wrong. In a challenging environment she keeps her wits — and a strong sense of ethics (道德) — about her. However, another reporter, Chuck Tatum in “Ace in the Hole” is totally different. He tells an editor, “If there’s no news, I’ll go out and bite a dog.” Later, referring to a sign in the newsroom that reads “Tell the Truth,” Tatum acknowledges some guilt. But, “Not enough to stop me on my way to the top.”In both movies, the journalists use typewriters. It’s what they do with them that makes the difference. And today, it’s what we do with our hardware — the journalism we produce — that makes the difference.Typewriters have long since given way to laptops, camera phones and video phones. But here at Thomson Reuters (路透社), and in the media as a whole, the need for a strong sense of ethics has never been more necessary. To me, at the heart of ethics are the preservation (保持) of honesty, independence and freedomfrom prejudice. It means ethics and standards are compatible with innovation (革新). In fact, they have to go hand in hand. There’s a lot of room for innovation here, but there’s no room for a Chuck Tatum, who would do anything to get to the top.In about 2020, my granddaughter will probably be using technology that hasn’t been developed yet to work on her school “newspaper”. She won’t be using her typewriter but she will, I hope, be using what she’s learned from the journalists of this generation. It’s up to us to set the right example.41. What does Chuck Tatum mea n by saying “bite a dog”?A. He tries all sorts of tricks to achieve his goal.B. He acknowledges his guilt of telling lies.C. He attracts people’s attention in the street.D. He becomes mad because there’s no news.【答案】A【解析】细节理解题。

What can help you make a fortune in the future? Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you'll earn later. The idea that popularity could have a serious impact on one's earning potential shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.“If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along wit h others in all kinds of different situations," said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the re cent finding. "Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you occasionally feel depressed," said Xu. She believed that all this helps you "earn a higher salary”.Maybe that's why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism (交友狂症). A woman even complained that the networking website Face book's 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts. But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency? “Call me uncoil, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition (定义) of ‘friend',” said Meghan Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US.( ) 1.The new study from the University of Essex in Britain show s that _________.A. if you have more friends you will not live happily.B. the more friends you have in school, the more money you'll earn in your late life.C. the less friends you have, the poor lives you will live.D. friends can make more money for you.( ) 2. 【2013界广东省汕头市质量测评试题】If you are planning to study in the United States, you need to consider several factors. Everyone has different opinions about where is the best place to live in. Also, the best places to live in are not always home to the best schools. Finally, many schools specialize in different areas of study. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻省理工学院),for example, is a great school for computer science and technology-related fields of study. However, if you want to study oceanography(海、洋学),your interests may be better served by attending school in a place that is on a coastline or near the ocean. Now I am sure that you know which schools are considered the best in the country. So I will tell you about which states I believe are the best to live in.California is a nice state. Northern California specifically has very good weather. Los Angeles in Southern California is another story though. Life in Los Angeles is full of excitement and fast, and sometimes dangerous. As for me, I enjoy the time I spent in Massachusetts, Virginia and Maryland and these states have a lot of history and culture. The weather is not as perfect as Northern California, but it is still quite nice. My favorite area of America is the Mid-west. Middle America, I think, is home to the true American sense of values. In addition, there are many good universities there. Also, you need to think about your likes and dislikes and then research the various states. You like sunshine and hate snow? Then you probably won't like the Midwest or even the Northeast. Open space, nature and peace and quiet? Then you probably should stay away from America's large cities. Are you interested in government? Then Washington D.C. is the only place for you. Whatever you decide, put some thought intoit. The place you live in could be the difference between a great study-abroad experience and a state of great suffering on earth.31.From the first paragraph we can conclude that in the USA _____.A. all colleges and universities lie in big citiesB. all colleges and universities lie in beautiful placesC. famous colleges and universities lie in nice placesD. famous colleges and universities may not lie in nice places【答案】D【解析】细节理解题。
