《The Moon and Sixpence》“I have an idea that some men are born out of their due place.Accident has cast them amid certain surroundings, but they have always a nostalgia for a home they know not.”This is the sentence in the book which I favourite--The Moon and Sixpence. My understanding of this sentence is :whenever we are ,no matter how old we are,we all have the right to pursue our dreams. The hero of this novel called Strickland. He worked as a broker in a stock exchange and had happy family at the beginning.Yet he gave up all of those enviable issues including his children.Everyone thought he must be crazy. His wife and relatives suspected him of loving someone else. But he just made a decision that he would escape from his old life and become an artist.None understood him.Although he didn’t know how to draw.To everyone’s surprise,he succeeded at last. The ground was cover with pennies, only he saw the moon.I like the hero, and,I can understand him.He had been tired of the same life.Painting is his love,he was willing to give up everything to realize this dream.Maybe he was having a difficulttime, but he was happy. That’s enough. Not everyone has his courage.。

The Moon and Sixpence and IIt is said that The Moon and Sixpence was a fairy tale written for adults. However, I hadn’t realized that it was the time for me to read this book until last semester.I used to get extremly frustrated after entering college. As an engineering student, I even felt more tired than high school. There were so much knowledge I was supposed to absorb that I didn’t have a second to build my own interests. Finally I perceived that I should stop and have a break. Then I bought this book by chance. The hero of this novel called Strickland. He worked as a broker in a stock exchange and had a happy family at the beginning. Yet he gave up all of those enviable issues including his children. Everyone thought he must be crazy. His wife and relatives suspected him of loving someone else. Ultimately the truth exceeded everybody’s expectations. Strickland was just made a decision that he would escape from his old life and become an artist. The only problem was that he didn’t know how to draw. To everyone’s surprise, he succeeded at last. After I’ve finished this book, I believe that I’ve recognized something unique, something I can’t speak out. I can only say that we all have the ability to change our lives, if you’re not content with your current life, don’t just cross your arms and complain about it. No one but you are taking control of your life.。

It's about this guy named Charles Strickland who gives up everything to follow his passion for art. And let me tell you, he does NOT care what anyone thinks!First off, I gotta say, I was super surprised by how Charles just left his family and went to Paris to become a painter. Like, who does that? But I guess that's what passion is all about, right? It's like he was willing to do anything to follow his dreams. But the craziest part was when Charles basically ruined his whole life just to paint. He left his wife, he didn't care about money, and he even hurt people along the way. It made me think about how important it is to balance our dreams with other important things in life.I also liked how the book showed us that art is like a window into someone's soul. Charles' paintings were like a reflection of his innermost thoughts and feelings, even if he was a total jerk sometimes. In the end, I think "The Moon and Sixpence" taught me that it's okay to follow your dreams, but we should also think about the consequences of our actions. And maybe, just maybe, we should also consider how our choices affect the people around us.So yeah, this book was a real eye-opener for me. It made me think about what I really want in life and how I should go after it. And who knows, maybe one day I'll be as passionate aboutsomething as Charles was about painting. It made me realize that success isn't just about money or fame, it's also about being a good person and treating others with kindness.Another thing I found interesting about the book is how it explores the idea of beauty. Charles Strickland creates really beautiful paintings, but he's not a beautiful person on the inside. It made me think about how true beauty comes from within, not just from what's on the outside.Overall, I really enjoyed reading "Moon and Sixpence." At first, I didn't really understand why he would do such a thing. I mean, who would leave everything behind just to paint pictures, right? But as I kept reading, I realized that Strickland was a man who was not willing to settle for a life that didn't fulfill him. He was willing to sacrifice everything in order to follow his dreams, no matter how unconventional they may seem to others. And that really got me thinking - are we all living our lives to the fullest, or are we just going through the motions? One of the things that struck me the most about the book was the idea that true passion and creativity cannot be tamed or controlled. Strickland's art was wild and untamed, just like hisown spirit. It made me realize that sometimes, we need to let go of our fears and inhibitions in order to truly express ourselves.Another thing that I found really interesting was the theme of beauty and ugliness in art.

The Moon and Sixpence is a captivating novel by W. Somerset Maugham that delves into the complex and often misunderstood world of the artist. The story is inspired by the life of the Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, and it explores the sacrifices and struggles that come with the pursuit of artistic expression. As I immersed myself in this thought-provoking work, I was struck by the profound insights it offered into the human condition and the nature of creativity. One of the most striking aspects of the novel is the way it challenges the conventional notions of success and happiness. The protagonist, Charles Strickland, is a stockbroker who, at the height of his career, abandons his comfortable life and family to pursue his passion for painting. This decision is met with bewilderment and disdain from those around him, who struggle to comprehend his seemingly irrational actions. However, as the story unfolds, we come to see that Strickland's pursuit of artistic fulfillment is not a selfish or reckless act, but rather a deeply personal and necessary journey.Maugham's portrayal of Strickland's artistic process is both captivating and unsettling. The novel delves into the intense and often tormented nature of the creative mind, as Strickland is driven by an inner compulsion to create that supersedes all other concerns. His single-minded devotion to his art is both admirable and unsettling, as he is willing to sacrifice everything – his relationships, his social standing, and even his own well-being – in order to pursue his vision. One of the most poignant moments in the novel comes when Strickland reflects on the nature of his artistic calling, saying, "I know that I have the power to express myself in paint, and that is all I ask." This simple yet profound statement encapsulates the essence of the artist's struggle – the relentless drive to give form to the inner workings of the mind and heart, regardless of the personal cost.Throughout the novel, Maugham explores the theme of the artist as an outsider, a misunderstood figure who is often at odds with the values and expectations of mainstream society. Strickland's journey is one of isolation and alienation, as he is forced to confront the consequences of his choices and the indifference or hostility of those around him. Yet, despite the challenges he faces, Strickland remains steadfast in his commitment to his art, driven by an unwavering belief in its transformative power. The Moon and Sixpence also delves into the complex relationship between the artist and his audience. Maugham's narrator, a writer who is initially bewildered by Strickland's behavior, gradually comes to appreciate the depth and significance of his work. This transformation mirrors the reader's own journey, as we are challenged to confront our preconceptions about art and the nature of genius. One of the most thought-provoking aspects of the novel is its exploration of the role of the artist in society. Maugham presents a nuanced and complex portrait of the artist, one that acknowledges the inherent tensions between the artist's need for creative freedom and the demands of the world around him. Strickland's refusal to compromise his vision, even in the face of personal and professional ruin, is both admirable and unsettling, forcing us to confront our own assumptions about the value and purpose of art.As I reflect on The Moon and Sixpence, I am struck by the timelessness of its themes and the enduring relevance of its insights. Maugham's exploration of the artist's struggle resonates deeply with me, as I grapple with my own creative aspirations and the challenges of navigating the complex landscape of the art world. The novel's profound exploration of the human condition, the nature of creativity, and the role of the artist in society, make it a truly remarkable and thought-provoking work of literature. In the end, The Moon and Sixpence is a testament to the transformative power of art and the indomitable spirit of the artist. Strickland's journey, with all its trials and tribulations, serves as a powerful reminder that the pursuit of artistic expression is not a luxury, but a fundamental human need – a means of transcending the limitations of the material world and connecting with the deeper currents of the human experience. As I close the book, I am left with a profound sense of admiration and respect for Maugham's masterful storytelling, and a renewed appreciation for the enduring power of the written word.。

The Moon and Sixpence" is a novel by W. Somerset Maugham, first published in 1919. The book is loosely based on the life of the French artist Paul Gauguin. The title "The Moon and Sixpence" refers to the dichotomy between the beauty and allure of the moon and the mundane nature of money. The novel tells the story of Charles Strickland, a middle-aged stockbroker who abandons his family and career in London to pursue his passion for painting in Paris. Strickland's decision to leave behind his comfortable life and pursue his artistic ambitions at all costs raises questions about the nature of art, passion, and the sacrifice required to pursue one's dreams. The moon is a recurring motif in the novel, symbolizing the beauty, mystery, and allure of art and creativity. Throughout the story, the moon serves as a reminder of the transcendent power of art, which can transport us to newrealms of imagination and emotion. The moon also represents the idealism and romanticism that often accompany artistic pursuits, as well as the longing for something beyond the ordinary. On the other hand, the sixpence symbolizes the practical, everyday concerns of life—money, work, and responsibility. Strickland's decision to abandon his family and career in pursuit of his artistic vision raises questions about the value of material success and the sacrifices we make for our passions. The sixpence reminds us of the mundane realities that can often overshadow our dreams and aspirations. The juxtaposition of the moon and the sixpence in the title highlights the tension between the idealism of art and the practicalities of life. This tension is central to the novel, as it explores the conflict between the pursuit of one's passions and the demands of society, family, and personal responsibility. The character of Charles Strickland embodies thisconflict, as he single-mindedly pursues his artistic vision at the expense of everything else. His uncompromising dedication to his art raises questions about the nature of genius, the price of artistic greatness, and the impact of an artist's work on those around them. The novel also raises questions about the nature of artistic inspiration and creativity. Strickland's transformation from a conventional stockbroker to a radical artist challenges the conventional notions of talent and artistic genius. His unorthodox approach to art and life forces the other characters in the novel, as well as the reader, to reconsider their own beliefs about creativity, passion, and the nature of art.In conclusion, "The Moon and Sixpence" is a thought-provoking exploration of the tension between art and life, passion and responsibility, and the pursuit of one's dreams at all costs. The title serves as a powerful symbol of the dichotomy between the beauty and allure of art and the practicalities of everyday life. Through the character of Charles Strickland, the novel raises profound questionsabout the nature of art, creativity, and the sacrifices we make for our passions. It is a timeless work that continues to resonate with readers, inviting us to contemplate the eternal conflict between the moon and the sixpence in our own lives.。

Reflections on "The Moon and Sixpence""The Moon and Sixpence" by Somerset Maugham presents a profound exploration of the conflict between the idealistic pursuits of the soul and the pragmatic necessities of life. The novel, named after a line from a poem by John Keats, symbolizes the dichotomy between following one's dreams (the moon) and settling for a comfortable, albeit mundane, existence (the sixpence). Through the lives of its main character, Charles Strickland, and his interactions with various individuals, Maugham highlights the complexities of human nature and the choices we make in pursuit of happiness.Charles Strickland, a prosperous London stockbroker, embodies the conventional life that society deems successful. Yet, he finds himself increasingly dissatisfied with this existence, yearning for something deeper and more meaningful. His encounter with an artist named Strickland, who lives a Bohemian life of poverty and creativity, sparks a transformation within him. This encounter represents a moment of epiphany, where Charles realizes that true fulfillment comes from following one's passion, regardlessof the consequences.Strickland's decision to abandon his comfortable life and pursue painting, despite his lack of talent and the inevitable hardships it brings, is a powerful testament to the power of passion. His journey, filled with struggle and self-doubt, mirrors the internal battles many face when considering a leap of faith into the unknown. Maugham presents Strickland's artistic pursuit as a quest for self-expression and freedom from societal constraints, reflecting the universal desire to be true to oneself. The novel also explores the theme of love and its various forms. Strickland's relationship with his wife, Amy, is complex and fraught with misunderstandings. Amy's lovefor Strickland is deep and abiding, yet her attempts tomold him into a conventional husband and father are ultimately unsuccessful. This failure underscores theimportance of accepting loved ones for who they are, rather than trying to change them. Strickland's relationship with his Tahitian mistress, Tiare, is more authentic and unencumbered by societal expectations. Their love, rootedin mutual understanding and acceptance, serves as a contrast to the more conventional love story between Strickland and Amy.The novel's exploration of artistic creation and its relationship to madness is also noteworthy. Strickland's descent into madness, marked by his increasing delusions and paranoia, parallels the creative process he undergoes. His paintings, while initially derided by critics, gain recognition and appreciation over time, symbolizing the validation and acceptance of his creative vision. Maugham suggests that true artistry often requires a departure from sanity, a willingness to embrace the unknown and push boundaries. The novel's conclusion, with Strickland's death and the fate of his paintings, leaves the reader with a sense of poignancy and reflection. Strickland's life, though full ofstruggle and sacrifice, was ultimately lived in pursuit of his artistic vision. His paintings, while they may not have brought him fame or fortune, served as a testament to his courage and determination. Maugham seems to suggest that the true measure of a life is not its material success but the integrity with which it is lived."The Moon and Sixpence" is a profound and engaging novel that challenges the reader to consider the value of their own choices and ambitions. Maugham's exploration of the themes of passion, love, and artistry resonates deeply, urging us to question the societal norms that shape our lives and seek fulfillment through personal growth and expression. The novel's enduring popularity is a testament to its timeless message of the importance of followingone's dreams, even if it leads to a life of struggle and sacrifice.。

He kind of ignores his family and friends, and he's not very nice to people sometimes. He even leaves his wife and kids to pursue his art! I think that's kind of sad because family is important too. It's like he's so focused on his dream that he forgets about other people's feelings. In the end, Charles achieves success as an artist, but he's all alone and he dies without anyone by his side. It's a little bit sad because he never really found happiness in his personal life. I guess it's a reminder that we should try to balance our dreams with our relationships with others.Overall, I really enjoyed reading "Moon and Sixpence". It made me think about following my own dreams and being true to myself. It's a great book for anyone who wants to be inspired and learn more about the importance of passion and perseverance.篇9After reading "The Moon and Sixpence", I felt like I went on a big adventure with the main character, Charles Strickland. He was a really strange guy who left everything behind to pursue his passion for painting. At first, I thought he was crazy for leaving his family and job, but as I kept reading, I started to admire his courage and determination. The novel showed me that sometimes you have to follow your dreams, even if it means giving up everything else. Charles Strickland didn't care about money or fame, he just wanted to create beautiful art. And even though he faced a lot of hardships and criticisms, he never gave up.One of the most important lessons I learned from this book is that art is about expressing yourself and staying true to who you are. Charles Strickland didn't paint to please others, he painted because it made him happy. It made me realize that Ishould always follow my own passions and not worry about what other people think.Overall, "The Moon and Sixpence" was a really inspiring book that taught me a lot about the power of art and following your dreams. I think everyone should read it and learn from Charles Strickland's journey.篇10The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham is a really cool book that talks about a guy named Charles Strickland who leaves his family and job to become a painter. He goes to Paris and Tahiti to paint, and he doesn't care what anyone else thinks. At first, I thought he was kind of mean for leaving his family, but then I realized that he just wanted to follow his dreams no matter what.I think the book is trying to say that it's important to follow your heart and do what makes you happy, even if other people don't understand. Like, even though Strickland was selfish and hurt a lot of people, he was true to himself and didn't compromise his art for anyone. I think that's pretty cool. Also, I liked how the book showed that sometimes artists have to suffer and sacrifice a lot to create something beautiful.Strickland didn't have a easy life, but he made amazing paintings because he was willing to go through all that pain. It made me think about how important it is to work hard and never give up on your dreams.Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Moon and Sixpence. It taught me that it's okay to be different and do things your own way. It inspired me to be brave and chase after my own dreams, no matter what anyone else thinks. Thanks, Mr. Maugham, for writing such a cool book!。
