But Secretary Duncan is threatening to light a fire to a tried-and-true technology—good old paper—that has been the foundation for one of the great educational systems on the planet. And while e-readers and multi-media websites may seem appealing, the idea of replacing an effective learning platform with a widely hyped (炒作) but still unproven one is extremely dangerous. An expert on reading, Maryanne Wolf, has recently begun studying the effects of digital reading on learning, and so far the results are mixed. She worries that Internet reading, in particular, could be such a source of distractions(分散注意力) for students that they may cancel out most other potential benefits of a Web-linked, e-learning environment and while it's true that the high-tech industry has sponsored substantial amounts of research on the potential benefits of Web-based learning, not enough time has passed for longitudinal(纵向的) studies to demonstrate the full effects. In addition, digital-reading advocates claim that lightweight e-books benefit students' backs and save schools money. But the rolling backpack seems to have solved the weight problem, andthe shocking costs to outfit every student with an e-reader, provide technical support and pay for regular software updates promise to make the e-textbook a very pricey choice. As both a teacher who uses paper textbooks and a student of urban history, I can't help but wonder what parallels exist between my own field and this sudden, wholesale abandonment of the technology of paper.4.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Multi-media websites and good old paper are kinds of digital-learning technologies.B. Digital learning technologies will replace the paper textbooks sooner or later.C. E-readers and multi-media websites are learning methods that are proved effective.D. A tried-and-true technology is paper textbooks, long used in educational system.5. What is the drawback of paper textbooks according to the passage?A. Their weight.B. Their price.C. Their content.D. Their appearance.6. What worries Maryanne Wolf is that ______________.A. paper learning can provide more potential benefitsB. students may not focus on learning by digital readingC. digital reading can't provide potential benefits for usersD. the results of digital reading effects are understandable7.What is the author's attitude towards digital-learning?A. Disapproving.B. Supportive.C. Positive.D. Objective.CRather than rolling your eyes when it’s your turn to bow your head and give thanks, try being grateful. The result just might be good for you, from improving your feeling to your relationships. If you don’t want to voice your gratitude, writing a letter may work, acco rding to various studies by Steve Toepfer of Kent State University and his colleagues.Toepfer and his colleagues had 219 students with an average age of 25 fill out questionnaires (问卷)to measure their happiness. They returned to the lab to fill out the survey three more times, with each visit about a week apart. Some of the students wrote a letter of gratitude each time they returned to the lab, while the control group didn’t write about being thankful.“The letter writers were instructed to write a letter of gratitude to anyone they wanted, however, the letter couldn’t be a‘thank you’note for a gift,” Toepfer said. “The participants had towrite about something that was important to them.”The results showed that their levels of happiness and life satisfaction improved after each letter they wrote. In addition, depressive symptoms decreased over time with the letter writing.Gratitude doesn’t just cheer you up—it can improve your health and energy levels as well. A 2007 study conducted by researchers found that organ-transplant(器官移植) receivers who kept “gratitude journals” listing five things or people that they were grateful for each day scored better on measures of general health, and mental health than those who only made routine notes about their days.A successful relationship may depend on your gratitude. Research reported in 2011 looking at more than 65 couples who were in satisfying relationships showed that each couple’s relationship quality corresponded with one partner’s feelings of gratitude. Resea rchers show that one partner expressed feelings of gratitude; both partners experienced a positive emotional response.8. According to the passage, if you want to get along well with others, you’d better________.A. write letters to them frequentlyB. pay more attention to their feelingsC. show your thanks from time to timeD. take care of them when they are in need9. The underlined phrase “the control group” in Paragraph 2 refers to the group that _________.A. is cold to others’ kindnessB. is not good at writing lettersC. is unwilling to express their feelingsD. is not allowed to write thank-you letters10. From the passage we can infer that people who often show gratitude are less likely to be ____.A. nervousB. carelessC. depressedD. optimistic11. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Why you should be gratefulB. Ways of changing your feelingC. How to show your gratitude to othersD. Thank-you letters’ role to human relationsDTiny tubes and filaments( 丝状物)in some Canadian rock appear to be the oldest known fossils, giving new support for some ideas about how life began, a new study says. The features(特征)are mineralized remains of what appear to be bacteria that lived some 3. 77 billion to 4. 28 billion years ago. the scientist said. That would be older than some other rock features found in Greenland, which were considered to be the fossils last August. The new results come from examining rock found along the eastern shore of Hudson Bay inNorthern Quebec. The filaments and tubes, made up be,made up of iron oxide called hematite (赤铁矿),appeared within a rock type called jasper(碧玉).Matthew Dodd of University College London, an author of the study published Wednesday by nature, said the living things lived in the seafloor where water was heated by a volcano. Since the fossils are nearly as old as Earth, which formed some 4. 5 billion years ago, the finding supports previous indications that life may have begun in such an environment, he said.He and his colleagues presented several lines of evidence to support the idea that tiny tubes and filaments are signatures of past life. But two experts who've previously reported similar findings said they are not convinced.“I would say they are not fossils, "Martin J. Van Kran endonk of the University of New South Wales in Australia, who reported the Greenland findings last year, wrote in an email. The paper's evidence for a biological origin falls short, he said.Abigail Allwood, a NASA geologist, said the authors have produced one of the most detailed cases yet made "for evidence of life in rocks older than 3. 5 billion years. But "It's an extraordinary claim to make and you do need extraordinary evidence, " she said12. What do Matthew, Martin and Abigail have in common?A. They have been studying rock featuresB. They are working in the same university.C, They all made a contribution to the Greenland findings.D. They have discovered the oldest known fossils in the same place13. How does Martin feel about the new study?A. It confirms the biological originB. It ignores the Greenland Findings.C. It needs more to convince peopleD Its authors takes ideas and words from his14. What's Abigail Allwood's attitude toward Matthew's findings?A. Supporting.B. Disapproving.C. IndifferentD. Neutral15. The new findings can make people know something about_______A. the process of fossil formationB. how life started on the earthC. how to examine rock and find fossilsD. how the earth formed about 4. 5 billion years ago第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Now at the age of 22, the ambitious young man is a living example that nothing is impossible — eve n though he can’t see, Justin is a professional photographer and skilled rock climber.Justin’s blindness wasn’t the result of an unfortunate accident. His eyesight had always been poor and he started wearing glasses when he was 5 years old. But it wasn’t until his first year of high school that his eyesight started to become worse at a rapid pace. His glasses no longer helped and tests showed that his eye nerves were dying, although the cause was a mystery for all the doctors who he had seen.A doctor at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City, one of the best eye clinics in the country, told Justin’s parents that the condition was psychological and he should just go home and relax. After a whole year of scans and blood tests, doctors gave him the d iagnosis of “optic neuropathy (视神经病变) of unknown origin” and shattered his world when they told him it was incurable. Without the ability to do the things he most enjoyed, the young boy pulled away from the world. He didn’t speak at all for some days. He just stood in front of an oversized computer screen, because if he leaned very close, he could still make out the blurry outlines of familiar shapes and letters. But one day, his close friend Beau Johnson asked him if he wanted to ride a bike. On the way, Johnson carefully reminded him of the things that he couldn’t see in front of him. And Justin gradually began to expose himself to the outside world again. Because of this, Justin’s family all called him Justin’s “Seeing Eye person”.Then another friend i nvited him to a rock climbing gym, telling him that he didn’t have to see to climb but that he could feel to climb. The boy took him up on the offer, and he has been climbing ever since. Some of the rocks are as high as 50 feet, but Justin has never cared about them and finished climbing them with the help of his friend.Maybe you wonder how Justin knows where to position his feet during a climb. Well, that’s what friends are there for. They call out some information like “Handhold one o’clock, Justin! One o’clock” from down below, which is the only thing that he can really depend on, apart from his own memory. “The process is feeling all the holds and having someone tell me where the holds are,” Justin says. “Then I feel every shape of the hold, in which direction it goes. I start memorizing and putting pieces together and memorizing how my body feels when I’m in certain positions. So I know, whenever I go back to do it again, how it feels. And then I do the route over and over again, even if it takes falli ng dozens of times.”It’s been working pretty well, though, as Justin has climbed many high-level rocks during his short career, and even landed several sponsorships, including one from chalk company FrictionLabs. But rock climbing is not the only extraordinary thing Justin Salas does. He is also a professional photographer and has his own photography business, specializing in adventure shots, landscape photography and so on. There was no doubt that this new passion gave him a way to see through his own vision loss. To frame his shots properly, Justin has other still working senses —the sound of his subjects’ voices, the warmth and angle of the sun on his body and his memory from when his eyes actually worked.Even though he can’t see what he shoots, you can have a good view of his shots on his Twitter. The day takes place annually and focuses on a different issue each year. In South Africa, December 3 also marks the beginning of the Disability Awareness Month.Since the first celebration, people with disabilities have gained recognition of their rights by States across the globe and of their rightful place in society. But there is still much work ahead of us to turn those legal rights into a true revolution, in which diversity is fully accepted and lived. The estimated one billion people living with disabilities worldwide face many obstructions of inclusion in many key aspects of society. As a result, people with disabilities can’t enjoy the equal rights as normal people, which include employment, education as well as social and political participation. The right to participate in public life is essential to create stable democracies(民主国家), active citizenship and reduce inequalities in society. In many cases, people with disabilities must be able to fulfill their role in society. It is important to focus on the ability and not on the disability of an individual. It is important to note that disability is part of the human condition, and that all of us either are or will become disabled to one degree or another during the course of our lives.By promoting empowerment(授权), real opportunities for disabled people are created. This supports them in setting their own priorities. Empowerment involves investing in them —in jobs, health, nutrition, education, and social protection. When disabled people are empowered they are better prepared to take advantage of opportunities, and they can more readily accept their civic responsibilities.6. What is the International Day of Disabled Persons meant for?A. To raise money for the disabled.B. To stress the value of the disabled.C. To make an international celebration.D. To make able-bodied people care about the disabled.7. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Barriers.B. Chances.C. Types.D. Regrets.8. What is the main problem for disabled people?A. The author is worried about the disabled.B. The disabled will have a brighter future.C. What society has done is far from enough.D. The disabled must fight hard for their rights.五、短文改错(共10小题;每题1分,满分10分)There are many ways you can show off respect for others. Common sense suggests it would, and to some extent, we already live in such a world, with closed-circuit television cameras everywhere and smartphones in every pocket. However, the routine filming of everyday life is about to go to the next level. A number of countries are rolling out body cams for police officers and otherpublic-facing agencies such as school. Private citizens are getting in on the acttoo:Cyclists increasingly wear headcams as an insurance against aggressive drivers. As camera technology gets smaller and cheaper, it isn’t hard to foresee a future where we’re all filming everything all the time, in every direction. Would that be a good thing? The available evidence suggests that it discourages behavior such as police brutality. Another upside is that it would be harder to get away with crimes or to escape blame for accidents. But a world of cameras could have subtle negative effects. The flood of data we pour into the hands of Google, Facebook and others has already proved a mixed blessing. Those companies would no doubt be willing to upload and store our body-cam data for free, probably with the assistance of machine learning algorithms(算法)—but at what cost to privacy and freedom of choice? Body-cam data could also create a legal mine field. Disputes over the validity and interpretation of police footage(执法镜头)have already surfaced. Eventually, events not caught on camera could be treated as if they didn’t happen, like a tree falling in the forest. Alternatively, footage could be faked or doctored to escape blame or incriminate others.Of course, there’s always the argument that if you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear. But most people have done something embarrassing, or even illegal, that they regret and would prefer hadn’t been caught on film. People already inspect their social media feeds—or avoid doing anything inadequate in public—for fear of damaging their reputation. Would widespread application of body cams have a further frightening effect on our freedom? The always-on-camera world could even threaten some of the natures that make us human. We are natural gossips and backbiters, and while those might not be desirable behavior, they oil the wheels of our social interactions. Once people assume they are being filmed, they are likely to shut up. We are nowhere near that point yet where everyone will feel they need one as an insurance policy, but we should think hard about whether we really want to say lights, body cams, and action.1.What is the benefit of filming to average people?A.Promoting the widespread use of smartphones in public.B.Fighting crimes or bad behavior by providing solid evidence.C.Guaranteeing cyclists and pedestrians more safety on roads.D.Encouraging better performance of the police and teaching staff.2.In the author’s view, the data flooding into tech giants is fairly .fortingB.puzzlingC.worryingD.satisfying3.Certain undesirable behavior is important because it .A.functions as an insurance policyB.warns us not to be caught on filmC.prevents inadequate social behaviorD.motivates human daily communication参考答案完型填空[语篇解读]我们很多人都对手机上瘾,而且人们普遍认为我们的行为、生活发生变化都是因为手机的负面影响。
