He's the NBA's No. 1 player who can run fast, jump high and shoot well. All these things are true, but there are other truths about Michael that are not so easily seen: his understanding of teamwork, his competitive spirit and his love for the game. It is these truths that form the deepest connection between Michael and me.After coaching him for eight seasons, I still wonder at Michael's love for the game that moves us, even in practice games. I mean, he never takes a day off. One thing about Michael is that he takes nothing about his game for granted. When he first came to the NBA back in 1984, his outside shooting was not perfect, and he began to practice shooting hundreds of shots each day. In the end, he became a real three-point shooter. Playing outstanding defense didn't come straight to him, either. He had to study his opponents, learn their usual moves and then try hard to learn the skills necessary to stop them. He worked extremely hard to perfect his footwork and his balance.Today, so many young people come to the game with the thought that talent is all they need for success. Michael thinks the other way. He knows his weaknesses, and for me, one of the signs of Michael's greatness is that he has turned his weaknesses into strengths.Another of the qualities I respect most about Michael is his performance on the court. Whilst he is very competitive, he always respects the other players, whether they are on his team or on the other side. Often, he gives a hand to an opponent who falls down. He is definitely not the type of player who would try to build himself upby tearing someone else down. This is an act of leadership. Through his outstanding performance on the court, he has won love and respect from both his teammates and opponents.Every season, Michael makes himself available to groups of children with serious diseases. He puts them at ease, lets them have a laugh, and makes it possible for them to enjoy basketball. When Michael retires, I only hope that young players like Grant Hill and Kobe Bryant will be influenced by his performance and by his sense of fair play. I hope that people will remember him for much more than just his championship rings. Being Michael’s coach has been a great joy. But more importantly, I consider Michael to be a friend.31. The text is written by_____.A. a basketball playerB. a basketball coachC. a basketball fanD. a sports news reporter32. What is true about Michael Jordan?A He can't jump high. B. He can't run fastC. He can shoot well.D. He often takes a day off.33. What does"Playing outstanding defense didn't come straight to him"in Paragraph 2 mean?A. He was not outstanding at playing defense at the very beginning.B. He was outstanding at playing defense from the very beginning.C. Playing outstanding defense was important to him.D. Playing outstanding defense was not important to him.34. Michael Jordan was all the following EXCEPT_____.A. respecting other players on the courtB. giving a hand to an opponent who falls downC. having competitive spiritD. building himself up by tearing others down35. Which of the following is NOT true?A. The coach regarded Michael Jordan as a friend.B. Many children with serious diseases can get a chance to meet Michael Jordan.C. Michael Jordan has influenced many other basketball players through his love for the game.D. Michael Jordan doesn't think talent is everything a person needs for success in playing basketball.Passage TwoSo long as teachers fail to distinguish(区分)between teaching and learning, they will continue to to do things for children that children can only do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that"reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible. "Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The role of leaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to develop the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity. It can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public examination. If teacher and learner roles are not distinguishable, how can teaching aid the child in the quest(探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning lo read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. "When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create anenvironment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.36. The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph isthat___.A. it is one of the most difficult school coursesB. too much time is spent in teaching about readingC. students spend endless hours in readingD. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance37. The teaching of reading will be successful if _____.A. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of readingB. teachers can improve conditions at school for the studentsC. teachers can devise the most efficient system for readingD. teachers can make their teaching activities observable38. The word"examination"at the end of Paragraph 3 most probably means “_____”.A. inquiryB. observationC. controlD. decision39. According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult taskwhen____.A. children are willing to do itB. teacher and learner roles are identicalC. teaching helps children in the search for knowledgeD. reading enriches children's experience40. The main idea of the passage is that ____.A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to readB. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possibleC. reading ability is something acquired rather than taughtD. reading is more complicated than generally believedPassage ThreeAs any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像)the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents' efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children's IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is. ”The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,"says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child. ” There is however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention. “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event. ”41. The writer's purpose in writing the text is to ______.A. show the relationship between parents and childrenB. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner tableC. report on the findings of a studyD. give information about family problems42. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because______.A. they are busy serving food to their childrenB. they are busy keeping order at the dinner tableC. they have to pay more attention to younger childrenD. they are tired out having prepared food tor the whole family43. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children_____.A. have to help their parents lo serve dinnerB. get the least attention from the familyC. are often kept away from the dinner tableD. find it hard to keep up with other children4. Lewis research provides an answer to the question_______.A. why TV is important in family lifeB. why parents should keep good orderC. why children in small families seem to be quieterD. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life45. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?A. It is important to have the right food for children.B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.C. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.D. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner.IV. Fill in the blanks with the words given below, changing the form if necessary. He’s the NBA’s No. 1 player who can run fast, jump high and shoot well. All these things are true, but there are other truths about Michael that are not so easily seen: his understanding of teamwork, hiscompetitive spirit and his love for the game. It is these truths that form thedeepest connection between Michael and me.After coaching him for ei ght seasons, I still wonder at Michael’s love for the game that moves us, even in practice games. I mean, he never takes a day off.One thing about Michael is that he takes nothing about his game for granted. When he first came to the NBA back in 1984, his outside shooting was notperfect, and he began to practice shooting hundreds of shots each day. In the end, he became a real three-point shooter. Playing outstanding defense didn’t come straight to him, either. He had to study his opponents, learn their usual moves and then hard to learn the skills necessary to stop them. He worked extremely hard to perfect his footwork and his balance.Today, so many young people come to the game with the thought that talent is all they need for success. Michael thinks the other way. He knows his weaknesses, and for me, one of the signs of Michael’s greatness is that he has turned his weaknesses into strengths.Another of the qualities I respect most about Michael is his performance on the court. Whilst he is very competitive, he always respects the other players, whether they are on his team or on the other side. Often, he gives a hand to an opponent who falls down. He is definitely not the type of player who would try to build himself up by tearing someone else down. Being Michael’s coach has beena great joy. But more importantly, I consider Michael to be a friend.31.The text is written by ______.A.a basketball playerB.a basketball coachC.a basketball fanD.a sports news reporter32.What is true about Michael Jordan?A.He can’t jump high.B.He can’t run fast.C.He can shoot well.D.He often takes a day off.33.What does “Playing outstanding defense didn’t come straight to him” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.He was not outstanding at playing defense at the very beginning.B.He was outstanding at playing defense from the very beginning.C.Playing outstanding defense was important to him.D.Playing outstanding defense was not important to him.34.Michael Jordan was all the following EXCEPT ______.A.respecting other players on the courtB.giving a hand to an opponent who falls downC.having competitive spiritD.building himself up by tearing others down35.Which of the following is NOT true?A.The coach regarded Michael Jordan as a friend.B.Many children with serious diseases can get a chance to meet Michael Jordan.C.Michael Jordan has influenced many other basketball players through his love for the game.D.Michael Jordan doesn't think talent is everything a person needs for success in playing basketball.Passage 2(阅读选择)So long as teachers fail to distinguish(区分)between teaching and learning, they will continue to to do things for children that children can only do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activity about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The role of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to develop the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity. It can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teachers and learner role are distinguishable, how can teaching aid the child in the quest(探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “ Make learning to read easy, w hich means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.36.The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that ______.A.it is one of the most difficult school coursesB.too much time is spent in teaching about readingC.students spend endless hours in readingD.reading tasks are assigned with little guidance37.The teaching of reading will be successful if ______.A.teachers can enable students to develop their own way of readingB.teachers can improve conditions at school for the studentsC.teachers can devise the most efficient system for readingD.teachers can make their teaching activities observable38.The word “ scrutiny” at the end of Paragraph 3 most probably means“ ______”.A.inquiryB.observationC.controlD.decision39.According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when ______.A.children are willing to do itB.teacher and learner roles are identicalC.teaching helps children in the search for knowledgeD.reading enriches children’s experience40.The main idea of the passage is that ______.A.teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to readB.teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possibleC.reading ability is something acquired rather than taughtD.reading is more complicated than generally believedPassage 3(阅读选择)As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像)the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation give s way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “ In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scares,” Lewis says, “ And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “ Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “ When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “ When the TV is on”, Lewis says,“ dinner is a non-event.”41.The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______.A.show the relationship between parents and childrenB.teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner tableC.report on the findings of a studyD.give information about family problems42.Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______.A.they are busy serving food to their childrenB.they are busy keeping order at the dinner tableC.they have to pay more attention to younger childrenD.they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family43.By saying “ Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3, Lewis means thatmiddle children ______.A.have to help their parents to serve dinnerB.get the least attention from the familyC.are often kept away from the dinner tableD.find it hard to keep up with other children44.Lewis’ research provides an answer to the question ______.A.why TV is important in family lifeB.why parents should keep good orderC.why children in small families seem to be quieterD.why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life45.Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?A.It is important to have the right food for children.B.It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.C.Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.D.Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner四、选词填空 (共1小题10分)Passage 1(选词填空(句子))46.
