Every year, tens of thousands of Chinese middle school students go to foreign countries for further study. The popular destinations are America, Britain, Australia, Japan and Canada. Chinese children hope a lot to go abroad to get a wider view of the world. However, life in foreign countries is a big challenge for them, because they will meet a culture shock and language problems.

Amy Lee, a 15-year-old student from Shenzhen, began to study in a senior high school in Vancouver, Canada, in January. To her surprise, her teachers there never force students to study. And there isn’t much homework. Because of the different education system, students there have more free time and more space for thinking. However, as Chinese students, we must spend our time and money properly, or we won’t have an easy time. For example, some of Amy’s Chinese friends spent their whole year’s money in the first three months of the term. What’s worse, they didn’t pass their exams.

Without doubt, studying abroad at a young age can help students learn foreign languages quickly and it can enrich their minds, but they should also know about the challenges. ‘Make sure that you are well prepared if you decide to study abroad,’Amy said.

These days haze(雾霾)is around us here and there. In fact, everyone has the power to change their living habits to help reduce it. Many local governments call on their people to take action to make the air cleaner.

Transport is one of the biggest contributors(促成物)to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality. When one drives to work for one year,he uses as mush energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If it is necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a ton of pollutants, including CO2,from going into the atmosphere.

Carpooling is another way to reduce carbon emissions(排放).Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It immediately reduces your car’s emissions by half.

What you do inside your living space can have a big effect on the air quality outside it. You can do a lot of things inside and around your home that will help you pollute less and save some money.

A large amount of our energy comes from burning coal, another contributor to haze. By cutting down your electricity use,you are cutting down on haze. So you may try to reduce your use of electricity by turning off lights, using your air conditioner wisely during the summer months,or updating(更新) some of your electrical appliances(家电) to low-energy models. For example, you can use energy-saving lamps that need less energy and last 10 times longer than common bulbs.

Some friends invite you over and serve you a delicious dinner. Someone lends you his car while there’s something wrong with yours. You are sick, and a friend brings you a meal and cares for you. How do you show your gratitude?

Sometimes simply saying thank you is enough. At other times, it is thoughtful to say thank you in a more different way. Be sure to tell that person what you are grateful for and why you are grateful.

You can write a thank-you note. People are very busy these days. A handwritten note shows you took the time to tell someone you are grateful to him or her. Or you can call and thank the person. ★ To say a big thank you to someone, have a party for that person.

Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can’t eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.

In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside the city to a dump. Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places.

To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.

In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything except the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus, which looks like black earth. Body language is the quiet, secret and most powerful language of all! It is said that our body movements communicate about 50 percent of what we really mean while words only express 7 percent. So, while your mouth is closed, your body is just saying..

Arms. How you hold your arms shows how open and receptive you are to people you meet. If you keep your arms to the sides of your body or behind your back, this suggests you are not afraid of anything. Outgoing people generally use their arms with big movements, while quieter people keep them close to their bodies. If someone upsets you, just cross

your arms to show you're unhappy!

Head. When you want to appear confident, keep your head level. However, to be friendly in listening or speaking, you must move your head a little.

Legs. Your legs will move around a lot more than usual when you are nervous or telling lies.

Posture . A good posture makes you feel better about yourself. If you are feeling unhappy, you usually don't sit straight, with your shoulders inwards. This makes breathing more difficult and makes you feel nervous or uncomfortable.

Face. When you lie, you might put on a false face. But that expression would not last long. And your true emotions such as happiness, sadness, fear and so on will come through.

Students at a primary school in Fuzhou, East China's Fujian Province were required to clean the school toilets to help them develop good habits. But some parents are strongly against the idea. They can't see the advantages of students doing such chores (杂亊). They think that the school should provide students with a proper education, not the chance to be school cleaners.

In fact, parents, schools and society play an equally important role i n developing the character of students. It is good for schools to give students such tasks, because few of the students will do them at home. Their parents want them to do homework only.

In recent years, some parents will make mountains out of molehills when students are asked to do some chores in schools. Some complain about the teachers if their kids get hurt in schools; some even challenge the schools' teaching methods and management. As a result, many primary schools, especially those in big cities, do not let students join in outdoor activities during breaks, fearing that they might get hurt. This is bad for the development of students' best qualities.

All over the world the need for more laptops and computers increases each year. Networks have been part of our life. Probably everyone with a portable device (移动设备} has once logged on to a public WiFi network without paying for it, while they are having a coffee, on a train, in a shopping mall or at a hotel. However, is this kind of public WiFi network safe?

Some networks are better protected than others because encryption (加密)methods are used. Therefore, they are safer than others. But a survey in 2015 showed that more than 950 million records were not protected, including addresses, emails, birth dales, phone numbers, passwords and so on. These open WiFi networks are really not safe, because it is very easy for hackers (黑客) to break into the operating system and get people's private information.

Most smartphones and laptops, by themselves, search and connect to WiFi networks. They usually prefer a network with a connection that has been used before. Hackers' devices are able to record these searches and look like the trusted WiFi networks. 八年级英语阅读竞赛试卷 Name:__________ Class:___________ A Sociologists(社会学家), working in western countries, have found that a large number of women wished they had been born men. The number is said to be as high as 60% in Germany. “Women often wish they had the same chances as men have, and think it is still men’s world.” Said Dr. James Helen, one of the sociologists who did the study. Many men say that they have more duties than women. A man has to make money to support(养活) his family and to make the important decision, so it is right for men to be paid more. Some are even against their wives working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children cannot be taken good care of. If women take full-time jobs, they won’t be able to do what they are best at doing: making a nice home and bringing up the children. Some women disagree. They say they want to get out of their homes and to have freedom to choose between work and home life. Women have the right of equal pay and equal chances. Anne Harper has a very good job. She also believes in “Women’s Liberation”. “I don’t wish I were a man,” she says, “and I don’t think many women do. But I do wish people would stop treating us like second-class people. At work, for example, we usually do the work that men do but get paid less. There are still a lot of jobs only to men usually they are the best ones.
