But in the developing world, a lack of vitamin A causes much moreserious harm to children. The world Health Organization links the lack of vitamin A to as many as 250,000 child deaths every year. One excellent source of vitamin A is found in newly developed sweet potatoes with orange flesh. Orange sweet potatoes contain high levels of beta-carotene, which the body changes into vitamin A. Experts say orange sweet potatoes could help the Africans who are lacking in vitamin A. But, first, more people will need to be persuaded to eat them. Sweet potatoes need a better image in Africa. Jan Low with the International Potato Center says, “We do have an image problem with sweet potatoes. In many African countries, they are seen as a crop of the poor.”Ms. Low explains that sweet potatoes are mainly grown by poor women to feed their families in case another crop fails. The sweet potatoes commonly grown in Africa have white or yellow flesh. But they are low in vitamin A.Jan Low took part in a project to study how to market orange sweet potatoes to Africans best. She worked on an information campaign in Mozambique and Uganda. The campaign included radio messages about the nutritional benefits of the orange sweet potato. They advertised its ability to “fight diseases, make you strong, clear you skin and make you look healthy”. In areas without radio, the campaigners spread the message through theater. The performances included singing, dancing and storytelling. And everywhere they went, the campaigners wore orange T-shirts and hats. They even drove orange cars.Dan Gustafson heads the Washington office of the United Nations Foodand Agriculture Organization. He mentions the efforts in the past to increase the popularity of other nutritious crops. He says most of these efforts failed because organizers of the campaigns did not consider what people wanted to eat. People want to eat what they are familiar with. But Mr. Gustafson sees a better chance for the efforts to increase the popularity of the orange sweet potato in Africa. Except for the color, the orange sweet potato is almost the same as what people already eat. Dan Gustafson says, “I think this time the campaigners will succeed, because they have made enough advertisements and the difference between the vegetable they have advertised and what people already eat is not a radical one.”(1)What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?A . The benefits of vitamin AB . The causes of night blindnessC . The results of a lack of vitamin AD . The main reasons for child deaths(2)Many Africans believe that _____.A . sweet potatoes are harmfulB . sweet potatoes are expensiveC . sweet potatoes are not nutritiousD . sweet potatoes are for the poor(3)The campaigners advertised orange sweet potatoes through _____.A . radioB . televisionC . white colorD . phones四、完成句子20. 单词拼写(根据首字母提示或者汉语提示,用单词的正确形式填空)(1)Could you write me a ________ of what was discussed at the meeting?(2)The boy stood up in a hurry to answer questions without the teacher’s p________.(3)I was________ to forget my own address when the policeman asked me.(4)Having worked in the garden for a whole day, he was so e________that he went to bed immediately after supper.(5)With the price of the house going up, my father can’t a________one in Beijing.(6)Jim s________the earthquake, but his wife and two children died.(7)The woman tried to keep the b________between work and life .(8)Many newspapers and TV reporters came to i________the foreigners from all over the world.(9)The Chinese people will never allow Taiwan to become i________, separated from the mainland.(10)________, a child needs education to become a person useful to society.五、阅读表达21. 任务型阅读About 7 million people over the age of 65 have been diagnosed with depression, and many more could be suffering. It is high time that you learned how to know the signs and help them. Depression is a big problem for seniors, especially those who are lack of care and attention. Older people are much more likely to be alone, socially isolated or feel a lack of purpose. Sometimes older people have a much more difficulty time admitting mental health problems. Many times, the link between depression and physical illness is much stronger. The elderly don’t like to express sadness the way that young people do. Older people who are depressed may have more physical troubles and may pay more attention to them. Depression may result from early memory loss and meanwhile, depression will make a person forget more and faster. A patient with early memory loss and depression really needs to be treated for the depression to slow the memory loss. A mood change is also a sign of depression. If a previously calm person becomes increasingly annoyed, or a previously clean person no longer bothers to shower or clean up, that person should be considered.Don’t tell older adults that you think they may be depressed, as older adults --- particularly men–see depression as a weakness. What you should do is tell them you’re worried about their health. Tell them they seem to be out of sorts.Say y ou just want to check with the doctor to see what’s going on. Once you’ve used physical symptoms to get that person to agree to a check-up, mention your fear to the doctor and allow the doctor to approach the subject of depression with the patient.(1)What is the title of the passage?________.(2)For what kind of older people is depression especially a big problem?________.(3)What attitude do older people have towards their mental illnesses?________.(4)What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase “out of sorts” in Paragraph 4?________.(5)What will you do if your grandparents suffer from depression?________六、书面表达22. 假定你是李华,你的外国朋友Peter让你写信给他介绍中国的传统节日“中秋节”,内容包括:1).时间;2).方式;3).意义。

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have becomesmarter since you started to learn a language?According to a new study by a Britishuniversity, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brainpower. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to theway that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect isgreater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr.Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons whoonly spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals”who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number oflater learners. Scans showed that grey matter density in the brain was greater inbilinguals than in people without a second language.
