莱斯1863年出生在一个贫困的磨坊主家庭，由于生活所迫，莱斯曾经上街卖过报纸，而后有在铁路公司当学徒。
尽管出身贫寒，莱斯却在机械方面表现了出人的天赋。
1904年，年过40的莱斯亲手设计制造了一辆2缸汽车，这辆车在当时堪称杰作，该车使用马达起动而非传统的摇柄，并且该车运行非常平顺，故障率很低。
恰巧莱斯的一名商业伙伴亨利.埃德蒙兹是英国皇家汽车协会的会员，他把这个这件事告诉给了同为协会会员的劳斯，没想到却让劳斯极感兴趣。
这样，境遇和背景完全不同的两个人被一件事连在了一起。
其实劳斯一直有一个愿望：找出一款能与外国汽车质量相媲美的英国本土汽车，并能用自己的名字命名这款汽车。
而作为工程师的莱斯志向与劳斯不谋而合：不计成本，设置制造质量最优良的汽车，并卖个识货的人。
正是有这种共同的志向，最终促成两人跨越门第的相识。
1904年5月4日，在亨利.埃德蒙兹的引荐下，两人在曼彻斯特的米兰德宾馆会面，并且一见如故。

“劳斯莱斯”的故事

星期三晨读前，我一进教室，就看见许多男同学围着我的后座周琛在讲什么世界杯的，只听朱藻泽说了声“劳斯莱斯”，围在周琛旁边的男同学顷刻间全部回到自己的座位，速度快得惊人。
我正在门口纳闷，只见同桌悄悄指了一下我后面。
一看，老师正站在我的后面呢。
吐一吐舌头，赶快一溜小跑，坐到自己的座位上。
老师一走，男同学们又围成了一团，谈起世界杯来。
连我也被这些男球迷传染了，竟也听得津津有味，有时还插上几句话。
“叮铃铃……”晨读铃声响了，他们还是不走开。
老师也似乎想让他们说个够，再没有来教室。
于是，他们的声音更大了，惹得领读英语的李娅茜在讲台上大声喊着“安静，安静”，可这毫无用处，他们仍然放肆地大声议论着。
“劳斯莱斯！”话音刚落，大家又像上一次一样，以惊人的速度回到座位上。
这回老师可是真的来了。
一到门口，李娅茜就迫不及待地告了一状。
“让你们倒霉去！”末了，她还不忘狠狠地剜了他们一眼。
不知为什么，李娅茜居然没有说出我的名字，使我得以“幸免于难”。
真没想到，刚从老师办公室出来，这些“死性不改”的家伙又开始谈论世界杯了。
哎，是世界杯的错，还是这“劳斯莱斯”力量太单薄？。
