In the months following my arrival, my parents worried about the

kind of life I would have. They considered their choices, including the possibility of giving me up for adoption. But at last, my parents decided it

was their responsibility to raise me as best as they could.

I soon proved that even without limbs(四肢) I was athletic and well coordinated(协调). I was all trunk but all baby boy too. I learnt to pull

myself into a straight position by sticking against a wall and going up it.

My mum and dad worked with me for a long time trying to help me

master a more comfortable method, but I always insisted on finding my

own way.

One of the best surprises of my childhood was the control I had over

my little left foot. I used it to roll myself around. My parents and doctors

felt that the handy little foot might be of greater use. There were two toes

but they were fused when I was born. So they decided to give me an operation to free the toes, which would enable me to use them like fingers

to hold a pen.

When the doctors are preparing me for the operation, my mother

kept emphasizing(强调) to them that they should pay special attention to

the possibility of my body overheating. She knew another child without

limbs who overheated during an operation and was left with brain damage. Unfortunately, even though they knew my mother was a nurse,

It's tough, it hurts – and yet more than two million of us in the UK

run at least once a week.

Of course, some people run to lose weight, or to get fit, and these are great reasons. R unning is also easy to do, it's cheap, and you can do it when you want. All these factors certainly contribute to the fact that running is one of the most popular sports in the UK.

But for many of those two million runners, the real reason we head out to pound the roads until our legs hurt is more intangible(无形的) than weight loss or fitness.

Many runners become interested in times. They try to break the 40-minute barrier for the 10K, or run under four hours for the marathon. Yet, really, these times are almost meaningless. And as soon as they are achieved, another target is thrown out almost immediately.

The times are only the carrots we put in front of ourselves. But why do we put them there in the first place? Nobody ever gives a wise answer. Deep down, we all know the answer.

Running brings us joy. Watch small children when they are excited, at play, and mostly they can't stop running. There's a great moment in The Catcher in the Rye when Holden Caulfield, caught in the uneasy space between childhood and adulthood, is walking across his school grounds one evening and he suddenly starts to run. "I don't even know what I was running for – I guess I just felt like it," he says.

This will to run is born. In fact, humans may well have evolved the way we did because of our ability to run. As children, and even

adolescents, we can respond to this natural call to run whenever the feeling takes us.

As we run, we begin to sense that childish joy, which is born to live

a wilder existence. As we run, the layers of responsibility and identity we have gathered in our lives, the father, mother, lawyer, teacher, all fall away, leaving us with the raw human being.

If we push on, running harder, deeper into the loneliness, further away from the world and the structure of our lives, we begin to feel strangely excited, separated yet at the same time connected, to ourselves. With nothing but our own two legs moving us, we begin to get a sense of who, or what, we really are. After a long run everything seems right in the world. Everything is at peace. To experience this is a powerful feeling, strong enough to have us coming back, again and again, for more.

19. By saying ―The times are only the carrots we put in front of

ourselves‖ (Paragraph 5), the author means _____.

A. runners are not able to achieve their goals

B. progress in times is just one simple reason for running

C. records in running can‘t be broken

D. nobody knows the reason why people like running

20. The purpose of using the example of Holden Caulfield in Paragraph

6 is to show that _______.

A. children enjoy running

B. childhood is joyful.

C. children often ran for nothing

D. running is a natural behavior of human beings

21. The author mentions the reasons for running except _____.

A. physical fitness and low cost

B. self challenge

C. escape from responsibility

D. joy and peace in mind

You don‘t have to look far to find concerns about how technology

been widely noticed that automation(自动化) is

will steal our jobs. It‘s

making machines more powerful and shortening the list of current jobs

that only a human can do.

Over the weeke nd, I read Martin Ford‘s new book, Rise of the

Robots, which looks at how far machines have come. Ford warns of a

coming perfect storm in which mankind has to fight rising inequality, unemployment caused by technology, and climate change. He says

finding a way forward may be the greatest challenge of our time.

Yes, robots are coming for our current jobs, and that‘s an issue what‘s especially interesting is the place where Ford says we really need

to get some robots — health care.

Ford gives us the explosion of health-care costs. In 1960, health care

was less than 6 percent of the U.S. economy. That increased three times

by 2013. The United States spends about double what most industrialized

countries spend on health care.

―The danger, is not too many health care robots but too few,‖writes. ―Technology has affected other employment areas. It is producing inequality and unemployment, as well as falling incomes for most

workers in other industries. If technology can‘t improve the health-care

area, many people will be unable to afford health care.

Take a global look at this and it becomes more acceptable to

welcome the machines, and to accept that some jobs should disappear. If

machines make health care cheaper, then more humans around the world

will be able to afford it. The health of humans worldwide would benefit.

Besides, we‘ve seen workers turn to other jobs in the past. As Ford

says, nearly half of U.S. workers were employed on farms in the late 1800s.

When those jobs disappeared, new ones were found.

difficult situation here. Venture Ford isn‘t alone in highlighting our

capitalist Marc Andreessen recently touched on it with Fortune‘s

Dan

Primack.

―Everybody complains, ?Oh, my God, robots are going to kill all the

jobs and this is going to be terrible and we need less technology because

of that.‘ But then at the same time everybody complains, ?Oh, my God,

look at the rising cost of health care,‘‖ Andreessen told Primack. want to bring down the prices of health care and education, the answer

will be more technology.‖

1. Too few health care robots will lead to _____.

A. unaffordable health care

B. more people out of work

C. income decreases

D. unequal social status

2. The example of farms in the late 1800s in Paragraph 7 shows that

_____.

A. technology can help bring down health care costs

B. there is no need to worry about job loss

C. American workers could find new jobs easily

D. machines will cause workers to lose jobs

3. What does the ―difficult situation‖ (Para 8) refer to?

A. How to prevent robots stealing jobs

B. How to reduce health care costs

C. How to apply technology in health care

D. How to balance health care costs and employment

4. The main purpose of the passage is to ______

A. raise some concerns about technology

B. argue against rising health care costs

C. declare the importance of introducing robots into health care

D. warn people of the dangers of health care robots

Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, relax instead of stressing, and slow down instead of speeding up. Apply these principles(原则) in your everyday life. You will

then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.

Separate Y our Actions

When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that

you didn‘t even know you had. Just imagine: you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you carry two, it will take forever. But if you tie

one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run back and get the other one, and carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.

Say “No” Firmly

If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for all

not because the day has too few

the things you need to do, then it‘s

hours, but because you have too many activities. The solution is equally simple: say no to accept so much work in your private life or

your working life.

Allow Yourself to Be Weak

―I can deal with stress‖

is regarded as a positive statement in the

world of work. People who can deal with stress are given more and more

to --- until one day they break.

Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you are under

more stress than you can deal with. If you become ill, or your work

efficiency decreases, c hange your life goals. Say quite openly, ―I can‘t

manage that.‖

Stop Expecting Everything to Be Perfect

―If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, th en I

would be happier.‖

This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, and

unhappy. Life is imperfect. Only those who accept this reality can lead a

really full life.

Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous: driving

a car; crossing the road. But life doesn‘t entirely have these things. In

among them there is possibility that you may make small and large

mistakes.

Escape Now and Then

Successful people all have their own places where they can be left

alone in order to work. Find out which places improve your creativity.

For me it‘s the train. When I know that I‘m going to be traveling for fou hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find my

There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. Mrs Monaf not only conquered me with her vast knowledge of geography, but also won me over with her smile and warm eyes. It was in her class that I traveled to the highest mountains and to the deepest seas from the comfort of the classroom. Now you throwyour bag on the bed, turn on the TV and watch an international news programme on a satellite channel probably from UK or the USA. The main international broadcasters are BBC World and CNN. With an audience of over 1.5 billion people, these are popular channels that offer good-quality news programmes. In both companies, the journalists are experienced writers that produce journalism of a high standard. However, there are alternative news channels which people watch because they want a less traditional or non-Western view on world events. Russia Today and Al Jazeera International, an Arabic company, are international channels that broadcast in English. Both companies say they give a fresh view on big stories, and their experienced journalists often report from places where Western journalists do not work, and so they give us stories that we don't normally see. The Internet offers more variety. OneWorldTV is an Internet site where you can find stories about the developing world and human rights, rather than the usual stories about US politics and business. The writers for this company are often local people who write the stories for free. This non-professional journalism is increasing, and it certainly offers more choices. This increase in citizen journalism means that you can write the news, too. Main news broadcasters often use photographs and stories that members of the general public send to them, especially when there is a dramatic breaking news story. Besides this, some blogs are popular sources of news, and the website NowPublic lets you write stories using information you can get from anywhere, including sites like Youtube, Flickr and Twitter. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B.
