新高一英语专题阅读理解专项练习:WeekNine生活哲理Week Nine 生活哲理一、阅读理解(共20小题;共40.0分)AFrederick Buechner talks about looking back at high school years. He remembered what all his classmates hoped and dreamed of becoming. "In my class, as at any school,"he says, "there were students who had a real talent for something. Maybe it was for writing or acting or sports. Maybe it was an interest and a joy in working with people.Sometimes it was just their capacity for being so alive that made you more alive to be with them. Yet now, a good many years later, I have the feeling that more than justa few of them are spending their lives at work in which none of these gifts is beingused."Matt Lamb could have been one of those people. Until 1987, Matt owned and ran his own restaurant in Chicago. But that year, a doctor told Matt that he had a fatal disease. So he closed the restaurant and pursued his true passion, painting.Soon, Matt's art drew national attention. He became quite successful. Only after Matt had found success in his dream career did doctors discover that they had misdiagnosed him. He wasn't going to die after all.A misdiagnosis(误诊) may have saved him from a life of meaninglessness. Not that owningone's own small business is in any way unworthy, but it simply was not Matt's true passion. In his heart, he wanted topaint, and he would never be truly happy until he pursued that dream, wherever it finally led him. Those beautiful dreams we have for the rest of our lives too often don't materialize. And, again too often, we look back dissatisfied with the direction we took or the place we finally reached. You don't get to choose how you're going to die or when. You can only decide how you're going to live. That decision is too important to put off another day.1. I came across themat the restaurant and I recognized that little face, now without the mask.I said a "Hello" and asked the "little man" whether he recognized me. If you answer "bad", you might simply be choosing the wrong time of day to make your decisions. When was the last time you made an end-of-the-day business decision or a late-night online purchase only to regret it the next day? Most of us are guilty of some regrettable decisions from time to time, but researchers may now have an explanation for these poor choices. Psychologists and researchers call the newly identified phenomenon "decision fatigue". They suggest that each time we make a decision, we use up some of our willpower, that ability to control our own actions and say "No".After making many decisions, our willpower is then used up, leading us to make increasingly poor choices. Roy Baumeister, social psychologist on the topic hasconducted a series of experiments. These experiments proved that willpower roles likea muscle and can actually be fatigued with use. As a result, when fewer decisions areinvolved, there is less decision fatigue. But in a world with endless choices, everywhere from the coffee shop to the classroom, how can we avoid decision fatigue and choose wisely? Baumeister found that the most successful people have learned how to conserve their willpower by adapting their habits and routines. What can we learn from them?Make your mornings countWhen possible, make all major decisions in the morning while your mind is fresh and before fatigue takes over. When you face problems that must be dealt with, handle the situation early in the day in order to avoid a harsh word or an error in judgment.Avoid crisesDon't wait until the last minute to pay your bills, finish a project or make needed repairs. Use your willpower to avoid a crisis rather than just get through one.Sleep on itTrying to decide on something like a new apartment or can be draining. As with any major financial agreement, it's best to sleep on it before making any final decisions.Know yourselfBaumeister shared a final common denominator among those who avoid decision fatigue."The best decision makers are the ones who know when not to trust themselves." he said.11. According to the passage, you may make a better decision .A. at midnightB. in the morningC. in the afternoonD. in the evening12. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?A. Making More Decisions Every Day May Hurt Your BrainB. Deciding Constantly May Affect the Quality of Your DecisionsC. Thinking Carefully before Making a Decision Will Benefit YouD. Choosing a Suitable Time to Decide Is Really Important to YouDA friend of mine was sitting in the living room one day when his cat dragged in a little"gift" in its mouth—a dead animal of some sort. Taking a closer look, he was dismayed to recognize the dead animal to bea bunny that belonged to a little girl who lived next door. Her name was Bonny. My friend felt terrible, believing his cat had killed Bonny's bunny. My quick-thinking friend came up with a plan. Removing from the cat's mouth the dead animal, which by now was a dirty mess, he put it in the kitchen sink. With a little warm water and some shampoo, he tried to clean up the dead bunny as best he could. Then he took a hair dryer (a "hare dryer" actually) and blow-dried the bunny until it looked pretty good. Finally, he took the dead bunny out to the neighbor's rabbit cage and placed it back in the cage. He stood him up so that he looked very natural there in his little box.The next morning, my friend looked out the window and noticed a crowd of people gathered around the rabbit hutch. Everyone seemed to be talking and pointing. My friend decided to go over and act like any normal curious neighbor and find out what was going on.When he got there, Bonny's mother said to my friend, "You won't believe what has happened! It's a miracle! Bonny's bunny passed away a few days ago, and we buried that little bunny right over there..."A lesson:Have you ever tried to cover up one sin with another? Covering up only makes matters worse. When we get caught doing something wrong, for example, we may attempt to cover it up with a lie. But just like Bonny's bunny, the result is never what we expected. We end up looking foolish. We would have been better off admitting we were wrong and accepting the results.16. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that it expects potato use to decrease during the next fourteen years.Growers say one main reason is that more people are worrying about getting too fat. Several popular weight-reducing plans restrict carbohydrates. Potatoes are high in carbohydrates. American potato farmers also face competition from foreign growers. To deal with these problems, a non-profit organization is working to get farmers to limit potato production. The United Potato Growers of America was formed more than a year ago. Its members plant most of America’s potatoes.Over the years, many American potato growers have done their best to grow large crops. Because the more potatoes they produced, the more they had to sell. But too many potatoes for sale mean too little profit. So now the potato growers organization wants to reduce the amount of potatoes reaching the market. The goal is to keep demand strong and continuous. Members promise to plant fewer potatoes. They also promise they will not send potatoes to market when the supply becomes too large. The idea began about two years ago when potato growers from the state of Idaho formed a group called the United Potato Growers of Idaho. The group expanded its membership to become a national organization. Idaho potato grower Albert Wada is board chairman of theUnited Potato Growers of America. Mr. Wada recently compared potato prices before and after formation of the organization. Between September, 2004 and June, 2005, overproduction of potatoes brought prices down. But in the same period a year later, growers received an average price increase of four dollars for every 45 kilograms of potatoes. But not all potato farmers want to join the organization and restrict the amout of potatoes they can grow. And planting time next spring will bring a test. The organization will learn if members really will limit the amount of potatoes they plant.1. Why are Americans eating fewer potatoes than before?A. Because they have more food to choose from.B. Because the potatoes aren’t as good as before.C. Because they are worried about their weight.D. Because the price of potatoes has increased a lot.2. When things were hard, I would stand by the window and wave to the passengers who looked up. The strange looks made me laugh and stress was washed away.Co-workers began to take an interest in my behavior. They would stand from view, watch the reactions I received, and laugh along. Late afternoon was the best time — rush hour traffic filled the overpass with cars and buses. It didn’t take long to attract a group of staffs who passed the window every day and looked up at the strange waving man. After a while, waving became boring, so I changed ways. I made signs: “Hi,” “Hello,”“Be Happy!” and posted them in the window and waved. I stood near the window in various poses, made faces, stuck out my tongue, and once went into the walkway over the street and danced while co-workers pointed to let fans know I was there.Christmas approached, and job cuts were announced. Several co-workers would lose their jobs, and everyone was feeling low. Stress in the office reached a high. During the break, I hid from my co-workers, slipped into the costume, walked bravely to my desk, sat down, and held my belly, as they gathered around me laughing when my manager was walking through the door. He held his stomach, and tears formed in his eyes. It was the first time I had seen them smile in weeks. He said, “Mike, thanks! With the job cuts it has been hard to enjoy the Christmas season. Thanks for the laugh, I needed it.”24.Which of the following words can best describe the author according to Paragraph 1?A.Optimistic.B.Pessimistic.C.Generous.D.Clever.25.Why was late afternoon the best time?A.Because the author could attract many more people and make them relaxed.B.Because the co-workers would be more interested in his behavior.C.Because there were so many cars and bused then.D.ecause the author was free at that time.26.Who was/were probably interested in the author’s behavior?A.The passengers.B.The drivers.C.The manager.D.The workmates.27.How did the author finally make his workmates and manager laugh?A.By shaking and hitting the manager.B.By his humorous and funny acting.C.By letting his co-workers gather around him.D.By putting pressure on his manager.CTraffic noise can shorten your life, new research suggests. Having to endure rumbling lorries, honking horns and screeching tyres has been linked to shorter life expectancy and a higher risk of stroke.People surrounded by daytime traffic noise louder than 60db (分贝)were 4 per cent more likely to die than those where noise levels were 55db – roughly the level of a loud conversation. The extra deaths mostly involved heart or artery disease - which could in turn be linked to raised blood pressure, sleep problems and stress brought on by noise. The study also found that adults living in areas with the noisiest daytime traffic were 5% more likely to be admitted to hospital for stroke than those from quieter neighbourhoods. For the elderly, this increase in risk rose to 9%.The scientists looked levels of road traffic noise between 7am and 11pm, and at night between 11pm and 7am, across a range of different postcodes and correlated(使有相互关系) their findings with death and hospital admission rates. A number of factors - including individuals' age and sex as well as ethnicity, smoking levels, air pollution and socio-economic deprivation - were taken into account.Commenting on the findings, Professor Francesco Cappuccio, chair of Cardiovascular Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Warwick, said: “The results do not imply a direct cause-effect relationship. However, they are consistent with other evidence to suggest a possible causal link.”“It has been well established that nocturnal(夜间的) traffic noise disrupts sleep quantity and quality. If sustained over time, these disturbances, like sleep deprivation, have been associated with a 12% increased risk of all-cause mortality, mainly due to a 15% increase in strokeevents and high blood pressure. Public health policies must pay more attention to this emerging evidence. ”said he.Given what we know about traffic emissions increasing heart disease, we should remember that travelling by foot or bike is definitely healthier - both for you and for the people around you.28.The noise of can be lighter than 60db.A.rumbling lorriesB.screeching tyresC.loud conversationsD.honking horns29.What does the underlined word “sustained” mean?A.Restrained.B.Maintained.C.Resolved.D.Mistaken.30.What can we learn from Professor Francesco’s words?A.Walking and bike-riding will not increase heart disease.B.Traffic noise in the daytime is less harmful than in the evening.C.Someone may live healthily without being influenced by traffic noise.D.Traffic noise can cause a 15% increase in stroke and high blood pressure.31.Which of the following is TRUE?A.Traffic noise directly leads to stroke.B.The extra deaths mostly involved noise.C.Traffic emissions are more serious than traffic noise.D.Traffic noise has something to do with high blood pressure.DI’m not a hater. I admire those who write, read and love first person point of view. So why did I write PRETTY DARK NOTHING in third person? The answer is simple. It’s the way the storyand the characters presented themselves to me. It’s part of my unique voice.Maybe my love of third person comes from all those years reading epic(叙事诗) fantasy. I do think my reading preferences influence how and what I write. There’s something about third person that brings a story to life in a way that first person can’t because of its limited view of the characters. I love the richness of language, the depth of the world, the exploraion of emotion and conflict on a broader range that third person allows me. It’s about diversity.I’m not saying you can’t have rich language or depth in first person point of view. You absolutely can, but it is a challenge, just as writing in third makes it harder to create the same close feeling you get from telling and reading a story in first. Where first person explores the inside out, third tends to give a little more room to pull the camera bake and explore the external. To me, you get the best of both worlds. It gives you enough distance so you don’t feel like you’re experiencing the story through a single prism(棱镜)and yet it’s close enough to help the reader connect to the character and feel as if they’re on the journey with them.In the end, there is no right or wrong. Both points of view have their strengths and their weaknesses. All writers must work to find the right balance and to seek their own voice. At the end of the day, it’s all about the story. If the story is great, it doesn’t matter which point of view it’s written in.32.What hsa an effect on the writer’s writing style?A.Her parents.B.Her life experience.C.Her reading preferences.D.Her friends.33.What do we learn about first person from the text?A.It allows the writer to use richer language.B.It is easier for the writer to create close feeling.C.It can express the characters’ feelings more diversely.D.It hels the writer to explore the world more deeply.34.What does the underlined expression “At the end of the day”mean?A.After the sun has set.B.After thinking for a day.C.When a day is over.D.When you consider everything.35.How does the writer sound when expressing her opinion?A.Anxious.B.Humorous.C.Objective.D.Reserved.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
