What is Proxemics?
Proxemics is a subcategory of the study of nonverbal communication along with haptics(touch), kinesics(body movement), vocalics(paralanguage), and chronemics(sructure of time). Proxemics can be defined as "the interrelated observations and theories of man's use of space as a specialized elaboration of culture
2、How does this reflect American proxemics?
Americans generally prefer a large distance between them and stangers. This is especially so when one's own child is involved. eastern countries tend to require a much smaller personnal space and are accustomed to staring at children of other people, commenting on them, and touching them. In American, though, this is seen as disrespectful at best or child endangerment at worset. Parents may even call the police if they think someone appers to be taking too much of an interest in their child.

Asian Buddhist Culture: So many people live by the system of months today, but the strictly lunar aspect is sometimes given little thought. Buddhists have a stricter lunar calendar. Buddhist monks meet for prayer twice in one lunar month, at the beginning and end of the lunar cycle. The Buddhist calendar consists of 12 months. Throughout the year, the days in each month alternate from 29 to 30 (“Buddhist Calendar”)—making each month shorter, on average, than the months that many other modern societies are used to.
Cultures with Unique Views on Time
Nomadic Tribes of Afghanistan and Iran: These peoples of nomadic tribes do not feel tied down by time except the seasons. In the spring, they migrate from the valleys to the mountains, where they will find richer and more abundant grasslands for their animals. When the warm days of summer have passed, the nomads head back to the valleys from which they came in spring. Often this is a fairly long journey. This cycle continues throughout their entire lives.
Uint4 The Cultural Patterning of Space(中英)

Uint4 : The Cultural Patterning of Space(中英)The Cultural Patterning of Space空间的文化模式Joan Y Gregg1. Like time, space is perceived differently in different cultures. Spatial consciousness in many Western cultures is based on a perception of objects in space, rather than of space itself. Westerners perceive shapes and dimensions, in which space is a realm of light, color, sight, and touch. Benjamin L. Whorf, and his classic work Language, Thought and Reality, offers the following explanation as one reason why Westerners perceive space in this manner. Western thought and language mainly developed from the Roman, Latin-speaking culture, which was a practical, experience-based system. Western culture has generally followed Roman thought patterns in viewing objective "reality" as the foundation for subjective or "inner" experience. It was only when the intellectually crude Roman culture became influenced by the abstract thinking of Greek culture that the Latin language developed a significant vocabulary of abstract, nonspatial terms. But the early Roman-Latin element of spatial consciousness, of concreteness, has been maintained in Western thought and language patterns, even though the Greek capacity for abstract thinking and expression was also inherited.1.

《Space and Beyond 》 讲义

《Space and Beyond 》
