一般而言，住apartment是最便宜的，通常是给学生或是刚结婚还没生小孩的人住的。
等到稍有经济基础了，小孩也有了，一般人就会想买个condo 或是townhouse 定居下来。
至于拥有一间house，则是很多人口中所谓的American dream(美国梦)，其实这个梦想并不难实现，毕竟在美国房价只占大部分人收入中的一小部分，比国内是便宜多了。
如果公寓再细分的话，通常有studio (或称efficiency，中文则可翻成是套房)、
one-bedroom(一室一厅) 跟two-bedroom apartment (二室一厅) 这几种。
