In the days of Napoleon the same wind which would have carried his transports across the Channel might have driven away the blockading fleet. There was alwaysthe chance, and it is that chance which has excited and befooled the imaginationsof many continental tyrants. Many are the tales that are told. We are assured thatnovel methods will be adopted, and when we see the originality of malice, theingenuity of aggression, which our enemy displays, we may certainly prepareourselves for every kind of novel stratagem and every kind of brutal and treacherous manoeuvre. I think that no idea is so outlandish that it should not be consideredand viewed with a searching, but at the same time, I hope, with a steady eye.We must never forget the solid assurances of sea power and those which belong to air power if it can be locally exercised. I have, myself, full confidence thatif all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessaryfor years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's government - every man of them. That is thewill of parliament and the nation. The British empire and the French republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their nativesoil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Eventhough large tracts of Europe and many old and famous states have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shallnot flag or fail.We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on thebeaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields andin the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the new world, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.16. Throughout Britain's history, there has been no guarantee that an invasion would not happen.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned17. Napoleon and his army once crossed the English Channel and Conquered Britain.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned18. The enemy will use every means conceivable to destroy Britain.A. RightB. WrongC. When Tracy McGrady is healthy, his play can be so beautiful that even his ownteammates on the court cannot help but admire it - in the middle of a game.2. "It's hard for me, because I'm a fan of basketball," Houston point guard RaferAlston told the Houston Chronicle newspaper after McGrady's 44-point performanceagainst Utah on January 5. "When he's shooting the ball like that, a lot of timesI'm standing there watching and, all of a sudden, [the other team's] getting theball and going on a fast break, and I'm getting yelled at by the coach." Indeed,McGrady's body control, his energy, his shooting - watching these are like watching an artist at work, blending colours, constructing sentences, or playing music.3. Unfortunately, McGrady, 27, hasn't always been on the job. Already this season, he's missed seven games with back spasms. After Yao Ming was injured on Dec. 23,it appeared Houston would be without both of its stars. McGrady, however, returned three days later and has been playing well ever since, scoring more than 30 pointsin each of the last six games, as of Tuesday. Houston can't seem to get on withouthim. When McGrady was injured, the Rockets won two and lost five.4. "Listen, there are only four or five people on the entire planet that can do the things he can do with the basketball," forward Shane Battier said of McGrady. "From a fan's perspective - and we're fans even though we're players - it's really funto watch him do that. "From a player's perspective, his game can affect the entireteam. No question. We see him, and we get excited, and that pumps us up. He keepsmaking shots, and suddenly it seems to become easier for everybody."5. But it won't, really. Houston has just begun an important stretch on their schedule. Four of the next seven games will be played away from Houston - and without Yao.Six of the games will be against teams with winning records. Opponents willdouble-team McGrady in an attempt to dull the impact of his art. Instead of watching, McGrady's teammates will need to create a little art of their own.23. Paragraph 2 C24. The programme offers guidance in findingrooms and jobs.Economists blame young people's family dependence on the precarious(不稳定的) labour market and increasing housing prices. Housing prices have risen 17 per cent a year since 2000.Cultural reasons also contribute to the problem, say sociologists. Family ties insouth Europe - Italy, Portugal and Greece - are stronger than those in middle andnorth Europe, said Spanish sociologist Almudena Moreno Minguez in her report "TheLate Emancipation of Spanish Youth: Keys for Understanding"."In general, young people in Spain firmly believe in the family as the main bodyaround which their private life is organized," said Minguez. In Spain - especially in the countryside, it is not uncommon to find entire groupsof aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews(外甥/侄子) all living on the same street. They regularly get together for Sunday dinner.Parents' tolerance(宽容) is another factor. In the United States, it's the season of swimming pools, barbeques, camping and road trips.Road trip vacations where the car journey is part of the fun are especially popular with college students, who like to explore the country on wheels. These budget trips are ideal for students who often have plenty of free time but little money."Ever since I went to college, I've been traveling around a lot, exploring thecountry," said Austin Hawkins, a 19-year-old college student from New York. Thissummer, Hawkins and his friends have spent weekends traveling in New England. The best part about car trips, said Hawkins, is that you can be spontaneous. "Ona road trip, if you get interested in things you see along the way you can stop and explore."Matt Roberts, a 20-year-old student from Ohio who drove to Montreal, Canada, agrees. "With road trips you don't have to plan in advance, you can just get into a car and drive."Even with high gas prices, driving with friends is cheaper than flying. Roberts paid about 40 dollars for gas, but a round trip plane ticket would have cost nearly 400dollars.Driving trips first became popular in the 1920s. Newly paved roads and improved, cars made it possible to travel longer distances. Motels started appearing outside cities.By the 1950s, car ownership became the norm. Construction of the US interstatehighway system began in 1956 and motel and restaurant chains popped up everywheremaking long distance trips easier.Today, the US has the highest car ownership rate in the world. Only 8 percent ofAmerican homes have no car, according to the most recent US census.Though many college students don't own a car, most have access to one. On many ofHawkins' trips, they used a borrowed van.Hawkins' most memorable road trip took place over spring break. He and two friends drove from New York to New Orleans to volunteer, helping rebuild the city afterHurricane Katrina hit it last July. They crossed the country in two days and sleptin their car in church parking lots.Roberts' road trip to Canada last winter was even more eventful. Upon arriving inMontreal, they were lost in a blizzard and shivering in the -25°cold. To find their hotel, they turned on a laptop and drove around in circles until they found a spotwith wireless Internet coverage."I know we should have planned better, but we're young. The tightenedregulations will affect an estimated 17,000 foreigners that hold E-2 visasspecifically for foreign language teachers. The most controversial requirement is that English teachers residing outside South Korea will have to have an interview at a South Korean embassy before taking up their teaching posts. For applicants living in remote areas in Canada, Australia or theUS, this is an additional travel burden. Meanwhile, foreign teachers currentlyliving in South Korea must leave the country after their one-year contracts end and renew their visas at a South Korean embassy in their home country or third country. Before the changes, they could renew their visas by visiting a neighboring country and return without additional documentation. The visa changes are a reaction to public concern about the suitability of someforeign teachers. A report from the South Korean Ministry of Education and HumanResources Development shows between 2001 and August of this year, 1,481 foreignlanguage teachers have been caught for a range of offenses including forged degrees, visa violations and general lawbreaking. But the changes are likely to slow up the supply of teachers to South Korea's English language education sector. According to Michael Duffy, manager of a teacherplacement service in South Korea, applicants have to spend a few hundred dollarsand several months on getting affidavits for documents. "South Korea has put up too many hoops to jump through," he said, adding that foreigners would seek workelsewhere. Most foreigners wonder if the experience of working in South Korea will be worth the burden of the paper work and increasing restrictions. "I don't think(South) Korea has thought this through," said Scott McInnis, a Canadian teacher based in Incheon near Seoul. "This is a reactionary move by the government that will have strong implications for the EFL community."As part of efforts to ease the discontent, the South Korean Ministry of Justice has granted a three-month grace period for current E-2 visa holders to prepare thenecessary documents.41. Which of the following is NOT required of an E-2 visa applicant?A. to pass a Korean language testB. to undergo a medical testC. to provide sealed school reportsD. to undergo a drug test41. He said:"I love Thanksgiving because it means time off school, lots of nice food and a happy family."His brother Ben, nine, said:"The best thing about Thanksgiving ,is that when it is finished ,it is time tostart Christmas."But behind the food and the large amount of money spent there is another message. On Thursday evening, Dean and Ben's family will make a basket and put it on the table as they eat their evening meal. Each of them will write a list of things that they are thankful for and place the paper in the basket. The family will read the pieces of paper and take time to thank God and each other for providing them with comfortable and happy lives.Thanksgiving is a traditional festival that started in 1621, when the first pilgrims arrived in America to start a new life. However, he produced his most powerful works in the last decade of his life when he was completely deaf. This is one of the most glorious cases of the triumph of will over adversity1, but his biographer, Maynard Solomon, takes a different view. ____1____. In his deaf world Beethoven could experiment, free from the sounds of the outside world, free to create new forms and harmonies.Hearing loss does not seem to affect the musical ability of musicians who become deaf. They continue to “hear” music with as much, or greater, accuracy than if they were actually hearing it being played.____2____. He described a fascinating phenomenon that happened within three months:“m y former musical experiences began to play back to me. I couldn’tdifferentiate between what I heard and real hearing.2 After many years, it is still rewarding to listen to these play backs, to ‘ hear’ music which is new to me and to find many quiet accomp animents for all of my moods. ”How is it that the world we see, touch, hear, and smell is both “out there” and at the same time within us? Thereis no better example of this connection between external stimulus and internal perception than the cochlear implant3.____3____. However, it might be possible to use the brain’s remarkable power to make sense of the electrical signals the implant produces. When Michael Edgar first “switched on” his cochlear implant, the sounds he heard were not at all clear. Gradually, with much hard work, he began to identify everyday sounds. For example, “The insistent ringing of the telephone became clear almost at once.”The primary purpose of the implant is to allow communication with others. When people spoke to Eagar, he heard their voices “coming through like a long-distance telephone call on a poor connection.” But when it came tohis beloved music, the implant was of no help.4 ____4____. He said, “I play the piano as I used to and hear it in my headat the same time. The movement of my fingers and the feel of the keys give added ‘ clarity’ to hearing in my head.5”Cochlear implants allow the deaf to hear again in a way that is not perfect, but which can change their lives.____5____. 2019职称英语综合类A级阅读理解及答案4“Lucky” Lord Lucan ----- Alive or DeadOn 8th November 1974 Lord Lucan,a British aristocrat, vanished. The day before, his children's nanny had beenbrutally murdered and his wife had been attacked too. To this day the British public are still interested in the murdercase because Lucan has never been found. Now,over 30 years later, the police have reopened, the case, hoping that new DNA techniques will he1p solve this murder mystery.1People suspected that“Lucky”,as he was called by friends, wanted to kill his wife he no longer lived with. They say that Lucan entered his old house and in the dark, killed the nanny by mistake. His estranged wife heard noises, came downstairs and was also attacked, but managed to escape. Seven months after the murder,a jury conc1uded that Lucanhad ki1led the nanny. What happened next is unc1ear,but there are several theories which fall into one of three categories:he may have killed himself,he could have escaped or he might have been killed. It appears that the night after the murder,“Lucky”borrowed a car and drov e it,Lucan's friend Aspinall said in an interview that he thought Lucan had committed suicide by sinking his boat in the English Channel.Another version of events says that “Lucky” left the blood-soaked car on the coast and took a ferry to France.2 He was met there by someone who drove him to safety in another country. However, after a time, his rescuers became worriedthat they would become involved in the murder too and so Lucan was killed.A further fascinating theory was made in the book Dead Lucky by Duncan MacLaughlin,a former detective. He believes that Lucan travelled to Goa,India, where he assumed the identity of a Mr Barry Haplin. Lucan then lived in Goa till his death in 1996. In the end the c1aim turned out be a case of mistaken identity. The man who died in 1996 was real1y Haplin,an ex-schoolteacher turned hippy. So what is thetruth about Lucky? This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts.2 An important thing to remember about cut flowers isthat they are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations(康乃馨)retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowers at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care.3 Flowers are not intended by nature to live very long. Their biological purpose is simply to attract birds or insects, such as bees, for pollination(授粉). After that, they quickly dry up and die. The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide(二氧化碳), called respiration(呼吸), generates the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and color. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of allthis respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies.4 How, then, to control the rate at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature. We know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse is also true. Thus by maintaining low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly.5 Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers findit difficult to "drink" water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these unwanted substances, household chlorine bleach(含氯漂白剂)can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach(at 4% solution)be added to each liter of water. The water and solution should also be replaced each day.23 Paragraph 2 .24 Paragraph 3 .25 Paragraph 4 .26 Paragraph 5 .A Control of RespirationB Beauty of Fresh Cut FlowersC Role of RespirationD Most Important Aspect of Flower CareE Need for Clean WaterF Ways of Stopping Respiration27 A few simple facts will help you keep cut flowers .28 Respiration plays a key role29 The aging of cut flowers can be slowed down .30 Another important way to prolong the life of cut flowers is .A by keeping its original shape and colorB in the life of cut flowersC to produce carbon dioxideD for as long as possibleE by controlling temperatureF to replace the water and solution every day。

2019年职称英语卫生类A级阅读复习讲义(4)Dreams 梦之闲话Everyone can dream.Indeed, everyone does dream. Those who claim that they never dream at all actually dream just as frequently as the rest of us, though they may not remember anything about it.Even those of us who are perfectly aware of dreaming night after night very seldom remember those dreams in great detail but merely retain an untidy mixture of seemingly unrelated impressions. Dreams are not simplyvisual-we dream with all our sense , so that we appear to experience sound, touch, smell, and taste. One of the world's oldest known written documents is the Egyptian Book of Dreams. This volume is about five thousand years old, so you can see that dreams were believed to have a special significance even then. Many ancient civilizations believed that you should never ask a sleeping person as, during sleep, the soul had left the body and might not be able to return in time if the sleeper were suddenly awoken .From ancient times to the present day ,people have been making attempts to interpret dreams and to explain their significance. There are many books available on the subject of dream interpretation.although unfortunately there are almost as many meanings for a particular dream as there are books.人人都会做梦,也确实每个人睡觉都做梦。

The Workers' Role in Management
Traditionally, it has been the workers’ role to work and management’s role to manage. Managers have planned and directed the firm’s operations with little thought to consulting the labor force. Managers have rarely felt compelled to obtain the workers’ opinions or to explain
their decisions to their employees. At most, companies have provided “suggestion boxes” in which workers could place ideas for improving procedures. In recent years, however, many management specialists have been arguing that workers are more than sellers of labor—they have a vital stake in the company and may be able to make significant contributions to its management. Furthermore, major company decisions profoundly affect workers and their dependents. This is particularly true of plant closings, which may put thousands on the unemployment lines. Should workers, then play a stronger role in management?
Workers should have a role in management. At the very least the labor force should be informed of major policy decisions. (A common complaint among rank-and-file workers is the lack of information about company policies and actions.)Between 1980 and 1985 about five million workers were the victims of plant closings and permanent layoffs, often with no warning. At least 90 days--notice ought to be given in such instances so that workers have time to adjust. Management should consult workers before closing a plant
because the workers might be able to suggest ways of
improving productivity and reducing costs and might be
willing to make concessions that will help keep the plant operating.
It should become a general practice to include workers
in some managerial decision making. There ought to be representatives of the workers on the firm’s board of
directors or other major policymaking groups. If rank-and-
file workers are given a voice in the planning and management of the work flow, they will help to make improvements, their morale will rise, and their productivity will increase. As a further incentive they must be given a share in the company's profits. This can be done through employee stockownership plans, bonuses, or rewards for efficiency and productivity. Finally, when a plant can no longer operate at a profit, the workers should be given the opportunity to purchase the plant and run it themselves.
