术家巴托尔迪（Bartholdi）。巴托尔迪用自己母亲饱经风霜而又坚韧不屈的面

后即1871年完成巨作。

山姆大叔的名气来源于一个小玩笑。据说一次美国政府官员视察工厂，发现
每个装有肉品的木桶上都因有一个“EA-US”，就问及US的意思，一个机智的员
工就回答说是Uncle Sam的缩写（实际是United States美国的缩写），于是山
姆大叔的名气流传开来。加之战后美国盛行的政治漫画对山姆大叔的形象宣传，
久之，山姆大叔就成为了美国的代名词。
