Whole blood breaks down quickly, and there were no methods at the time for safely preserving it. As a result, hospitals often did not have the appropriate blood type when patients needed it. Charles Drew, a Black surgeon and researcher, helped solve this monumental problem for medicine, earning him the title “Father of the Blood Bank.”In 1938, while obtaining hi s doctorate in medicine, Drew became a fellow at Columbia University’s Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He studied the storage and distribution of blood, including the separation of its components, and applied his findings to an experimental blood bank at the hospital. As Drew was finishing his degree at Columbia, World War II was erupting in Europe. Great Britain was asking the United States for desperately needed plasma (血浆) to help victims. Given his expertise, Drew was selected to be the medical director for the Blood for Britain campaign. Using Presbyterian Hospital’s blood bank as a model, Drew established uniform procedures and standards for collecting blood and processing blood plasma from nine New York hospitals. The five-month campaign collected donations from 15,000 Americans and was considered a success. His discoveries and his leadership saved countless lives. With the increasing likelihood that the nation would be drawn into war, the United States wanted to capitalize on what Drew had learned from the campaign. He was appointed as the assistant director of a three-month pilot program to mass-produce dried plasma in New York, which became the model for the first Red Cross blood bank. His innovations for this program included mobile blood donation stations, later called bloodmobiles.4. What problem did hospitals face in the late 1930s regarding blood donations?A.The shortage of blood donors. B.The inability to preserve blood.C.The challenge of blood infection. D.The failure to identify blood types.5. How did Drew contribute to the Blood for Britain campaign?A.He gathered different standards for the blood collection.B.He worked on the bloodmobiles for easy access to donors.C.He helped send life-saving drugs overseas to aid in the war.D.He organized the collection and processing of blood plasma.6. What can be a suitable title for the text?A.The life of Dr. Charles Drew. B.The inventor of the Blood Bank.C.A Savior of Lives during Wartime. D.A Pioneer in Blood Transportation. Her face is framed by wavy brown hair extensions, her filled lips pursed towards the viewer. It could be a description of an Instagram post, but the touched-up (修改过的) beauty is Diana Cecil, an English noblewoman who belongs to a powerful family at the Jacobean court. Experts at English Heritage have discovered that her portrait had been altered by restorers to enhance certain features, suggesting that our modern beauty standards might not be so modern after all.The great-grand-daughter of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, one of Elizabeth I’s closest advisers, Diana was considered one of the great beauties of her age. Yet it seems a later artist had other ideas.A restorer, probably in the 19th century, worked on the painting after it was damaged from being rolled sideways. It seems they also took the opportunity to alter the noblewoman’s face, enlarging her lips and lowering her hairline to reduce the size of her forehead. Now, following careful conservation work, Cecil’s original appearance has been restored, with the full-length portrait-painted by Cornelius Johnson when Cecil was about 31. The conservation team discovered the changes made to the Johnson painting after removing a yellowing layer of oily liquid that had covered its original, more vivid colors. They also surprisedly found the artist’s signature, and a date that had been signed in the portrait’s curtain suggesti ng it was finished in1634 and not 1638 as previously thought.According to Alice Tate-Harte, a conservator at English Heritage, it was not uncommon for people to ‘sweeten’ old paintings in the 19th and early 20th centuries. ”Conservation wasn’t a professi on, they weren’t working in institutions with salaries,” she said. “They were artist restorers and they had a bit more flexibility to prettify and beautify, whereas we have a lot more ethics today. we must keep our retouching to a minimum. I hope I’ve done Diana justice by removing those additions and presenting her natural face to the world.”8. What does the discovery of experts at English Heritage suggest?A.Prettiness is in the eyes of the viewer. B.Every great artist was once an amateur.C.Past norms may repeat themselves at present. D.Beauty souls shine brighter than appearances.9. What do we know about the original portrait of Diana Cecil?A.The original beauty failed to entertain the restorer B.The portrait was in fact painted for William Cecil.C.The painter intended to hide the beauty of Diana. D.The age of Diana was exposed by her hairline.10. Which of the following is an unexpected finding from the conservation work?A.The addition of the bright color. B.The portrait’s date of completion.C.The removal of the artist’s signature.D.The extent of damage to the painting.11. What does Alice think is the duty of art conservation?A.It means an artistic way of living. B.It depends on artists’ preference.C.It requires ethical considerations. D.It represents the fashion of time. When middle school math teachers completed an online professional development (PD) program that uses artificial intelligence to improve their math knowledge and teaching skills, their students’ math performance improved. This online professional development program relies on a virtual facilitator to present problems and provide feedback, aiming to enhance teachers’ mastery of knowledge and skills required. It covers why mathematical rules and procedures work and focuses on helping students employ instructional tools and strategies to overcome common struggles. An experiment was conducted in which 53 middle school math teachers were randomly assigned to either this Al-based professional development or no additional training. On average, teachers spent 11 hours to complete the program. We then gave 1,727 of their students a math test. While students of these two groups of teachers started off with no difference in their math performance, the students taught by teachers who completed the program increased their mathematics performance by 0.18 points on average. This is a statistically significant gain that is equal to the average math performance difference between sixth and seventh graders in the study.Teachers often have limited access to high-quality PD programs to improve their knowledge and teaching skills. Time conflicts or living in rural areas that are far from in-person professional development programs can prevent teachers from receiving the support they need. Additionally, many existing in-person professional development programs for teachers have little impact on student achievement. AI-based PD programs include opportunities for teachers to observe teaching practices. Teachers also receive real-time support from the program facilitators. The Al-supported virtual facilitator acting as a human instructor gives teachers authentic teaching activities to work on, asks questions and provides real-time feedback and guidance.Advancements in AI technologies will allow researchers to develop more interactive, personalized learning environments for teachers. More importantly, AI-based PD programs can collect rich, real-time interaction data, which help make programs more effective. Despite billions of dollars being spent each year on professional development for teachers, research suggests that how teachers learn through professional development is not yet well understood.12. What was the goal of the online professional development program?A.To create widely accessible methods B.To improve teachers’ teaching skills.C.To solve students’ common problems.D.To analyze students’ math performance. 13. How did the students taught by the teachers of the AI-based PD program perform?A.They exhibited statistically significant improvement.B.They performed even better than the seventh graders.C.They solved the math problem faster than the average.D.They started with lower performance but ended higher.14. How does the author highlight AI-based PD programs in paragraph 4?A.By listing current shortcomings. B.By clarifying essential concepts.C.By providing theoretical models. D.By comparing different trainings.15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.There is a demand for larger investments in professional development.B.AI technologies have helped us figure out how teachers learn in trainings.C.The expected benefits of teacher training programs have yet to be realized.D.It is a must for teachers to complete the professional development programs.JOMO refers to the “joy of missing out” — in short, unplugging from all media, practicing self-care, reconnecting to the present moment, and learning to appreciate the inner peace of being alone. JOMO is especially important for digital natives. 16 They have grown up in a world where social media is an essential part of their lives. Unplugging (拔掉电源插头) from the devices can help by giving us a break from the cruel social comparison that may be at the root of a lot of the anxiety. The following strategies can help you find joy in missing out.Make a list of activities you really enjoy doing.Post it in an accessible place so that at a moment’s notice, you’ve got a reminder of activities that bring you joy. 17Take regular tech breaks.A lot of FOMO (fear of missing out) is generated by scrolling through social media and the resulting social comparisons that inevitably happen. 18 Ground yourself in the present moment.Invest in offline connections with others. This can include family, partners, friends, and neighbors. 19 A brief on-site activity is a better way to build meaningful relationships than investing untold nights in connecting with relative strangers online.20This is often the most difficult thing to do for those with demanding fast-pa ced lives, but it’s essential to stay well and to take care of ourselves. It might be a solo nature walk, a warm bath, meditation, or soothing music — whatever makes you feel more comfortable in your own skin.Mike Huddleston had flown from Maryland to San Francisco and needed to get to a rental car agency. So they organized a training school. They adopted an activity curriculum (课程) consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying. To make it easier to manage the curriculum, all the animals took all the subjects. The duck was excellent in swimming, in fact, better than his instructor, but he made only passing grades in flying and was very poor in running. Since he was slow in running, he had to stay after school and also drop swimming in order to practice running. This was kept up until his webbed (脚蹼) feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming. But average was acceptable in school, so nobody worried about that except the duck. The rabbit started at the top of the class in running, but had a nervous breakdownbecause of so much make-up work in swimming. The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustration in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the treetop down. He also developed a “charley horse〞〔肌肉痉挛〕and then got a C in climbing and a D in running. The eagle (鹰)was a problem child and was disciplined severely. In the climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way to get there. At the end of the year, an abnormal eel (鳗) that could swim very well, and also run, climb and fly a little, had the highest average and was the one who gave a good-bye speech. The prairie dogs stayed out of the school because the administration would not add digging to the curriculum.62. But what about when they meet each other? This year, a dance drama titled Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting was staged on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala and went viral.According to CCTV, this poetic dance program was inspired by the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains. Created by Song Dynasty (960-1279) painter Wang Ximeng at about 18, the painting is “stunning in its sweeping scale, rich coloration and the expressive details”, reported CCTV. It shows a Chinese blue-green landscape: “mountain s and groupings of infinite rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water”.To show the Chinese traditional aesthetics (美学) of the painting, the dance performance conceptualized dancers as the mountains. They each had a different hairstyle, which resembled a mountain rock. The clothes they wore were shades of green and blue, which is also a poetic interpretation of the mountains and rivers. When the dancers swayed elegantly, audiences seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers.“It bri ngs me a pure experience of beaut y. It is not only a drama but also an ‘exhibition’. Vast mountains and rivers are coming to life!” internet user Mo Weisha wrote in a review. “More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.”Some people even decided to watch the dance again when it was staged in the theaters later. In fact, in recent years, more and more modem shows highlight Chinese traditional culture and have received warm welcome. Professor Sir John Beddington says the effects of climate change on the weather are already being felt in the UK.“In a sense we have moved from the idea of global warming to the idea of climate change, and that is rather important. Temperatures are increasing and there are more changes in our weather, ” he said.Even if effective action is taken now on global warming, he says there will be great climate change over the next 20 to 25 years as a result of past global problems.“We have serious problems in the world — in 12 years there will be another billion people on the planet and we have big issues of food security, water security and energy security, and many people will start to be living in cities, ” he said. “ These are serious problems; climate change is just going to make it worse.”He said the re were some “ uncertainties ” in the analysis of climate and climate change. “ But those uncertainties are completely unimportant in comparison with a great deal of evidence that shows it is happening in the sort of ways c limate models would expect, ” he said. “ For example, the Arctic is heating up faster than other parts of the world —this is exactly what the climate scientists are predicting. ”Sir John said those words as Britain experienced freezing cold weather and snow, with thousands of homes across the UK without power. England and Wales experienced 10 separate flooding events between April and December last year after widespread drought gave way to the wettest summer in a century, with unusually high rainfall totals and river levels around the country.8. Which of the following is NOT one of the things that Sir John says?A. We need more action to deal with global warming.B. Climate change will make some big problems worse.C. Climate change will cause greater extremes in weather.D. England will experience more extremes in weather than Wales.9. To introduce Professor Sir John and his opinions.C To prove that the UK has experienced a series of disasters.D. To show how correct the climate scientists’ predictions are.D“Do not tell anyone”. We often hear these words when someone tells us a secret. But keeping a secret is hard. We’re often tempted(引诱)to “spill the beans”, even if we regret it later.Accor ding to the professor, Asim Shah, keeping a secret may well “become a burden”. This is because people often have an “eager and anxious urge(冲动)to share it with someone”. An earlier study, led by Anita, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted(托付)with secrets can suffer from depression, anxiety, and body aches, reported the Daily Mail.Secrets are so often getting out. Why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it wit h each other. “Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone, ”according to Shah.He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out. But this doesn’t mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret.Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you’d better pu t yourself in their position, Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn’t give the information away. Shah also recommended that if you accidentally give up someone’s secret you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secre t isn’t so secret anymore.12. Wh y does the author say keeping a secret may “become a burden”?A. Because people are born not to be able to keep secrets.B. Because when people have secrets, their bodies ache.C. Because keeping secrets is certain to cause depression.D. Because keeping secrets could probably be harmful to health.13. How many reasons have been mentioned in Paragraph 3 why people tend to share secrets?A. 2.B. 3.C. 4.D. 5.14 What does the underlined words “spill the beans” mean?A. To fall by accident.B. To let out secrets on purpose.C. To spread secrets to everyone around.D. To give away secrets unintentionally.15. What can we learn from the passage?A. Quiet people are more likely to keep the secrets to themselves.B. Sharing secrets helps establish friendship or get over the, sense of guilt.C. It all started with her way to school every school day. Every morning she would greet an old man in her neighborhood, who she still doesn't know his name, smiling or even simply offering a friendly word “hello”. And he would always nodand smile back. “It seems to considerably change the emotional energy around me in the community.”She noticed this in both directions, “That simple act can both change our entire day with how they greet me.”Last spring, Muck brought an idea to her teachers. She provided them with a pile of sticky notes she had filled with brief-sometimes one-word-positive messages. She then asked the teachers to place the notes on students' desks before they arrived at school the next day. She also gave pre-filled sticky notes to the lunch staff and to school administrators including the principal. The idea was to make it easy for teachers, staff and students to regularly encounter reminders that they matter and are valued. “You are enough just being you,” reads one favorite note. Muck's idea could be just the thing in an office, an assisted living facility or even at home for asmall family.“Low-cost” positive interact ions, like a friendly word offered to the postal worker or coffee shop servant, are shown by psychology researchers to build sympathy and abate loneliness. Ananonymous note sent into someone's inbox or stuck to their front door is perhaps the lowest-costconnection there is, with potential benefits beyond our imagination. Sometimes the small estencouragements have the biggest impact. What would you say on a sticky note to share with someone in your community?4. What message does paragraph I convey?A. Middle-schoolers are friendly to the elderlyB. A simple act of kindness makes a difference.C. A community can be easily shaped by interest.D. Learning projects can inspire positive thinkers.5. How did Muck help people in her school?A. By writing thank-you letters.B. By means of sticking notices.C. By talking with school leadersD. By writing encouraging words.6. What does the underlined word “abate” probably mean?A.Measure.B.Monitor.C.Ease.D.Stand.7. The best title for the text is probablyA. What a friendly word means to a strangerB. Never be bothered by negative thoughtsC. Brighten the community with positivityD. How to build a harmonious communityCOne day, gardeners might not just hear the buzz of bees among their flowers, but the whirr of robots, too. Scientists have managed to turn an unassuming drone (无人机) into a remote-controlled pollinator (授粉媒介) by attaching horsehairs coated with a special, sticky gel to its underbelly.Animal pollinators are needed for the reproduction of 90% of flowering plants and one third of human food crops. Chief among those are bees — but many bee populations in the United States have been in steep decline in recent decades. Thus, the decline of bees isn't just worrisome because it could disrupt ecosystems, but also because it could disrupt agriculture and economy. People have been trying to come up with replacement techniques, but none of them are especially effective yet.Scientists have thought about using drones, but they haven't figured out how to make free-flying robot insects that can rely on their own power source without being attached to a wire. “It’s very tough work,” said senior author Eijiro Miyako, a chemist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. His particular contribution to the field involves a gel, one he’d considered a mistake 10 years before and stuck in a storage cabinet. When it was rediscovered a decade later, it hadn’t dried up or degraded at all. “I was so surprised because it still had high viscosity,” Miyako said. The chemist noticed that when dropped, the gel absorbed an impressive amount of dust from the floor. Miyako realized this material could be very useful for picking up pollen (花粉). He and his colleagues chose a drone and attached horsehairs to its smooth surface to mimic a bee’s fuzzy body. They coated those horsehairs in the gel, and then controlled the drones over lilies, where they would pick up the pollen from one flower and then deposit the pollen at another one, thus fertilizing it.The scientists looked at the hairs under a scanning electron microscope and counted up the pollen grains attached to the surface and found that the drones whose horsehairs had been coated with the gel had about 10 times more pollen than those that had not been coated with the gel.Miyako does not think such drones would replace bees altogether, but could simply help bees with their pollinating duties. There’s a lot of work to be done before that's a reality, however. Small drones will need to become more controllable and energy efficient, as well as smarter, with better GPS and artificial intelligence.8. What does the underlined word “viscosity” in Para.3 probably mean?A. Hardness.B. Stickiness.C. Flexibility.D. Purity.9. We can learn from the passage that ______.A. bees disrupt both agriculture and economyB. scientists have invented self-powered robot insectsC. bees in the United States are on the edge of extinctionD. Miyako found the special feature of the gel by chance10. A drone works best in picking up pollen when ______.A. its body is made like a bee’sB. its GPS works more efficientlyC.some flowers are coated with the gelD. horsehairs with the gel are attached to it11. According to Eijiro Miyako, the drones ______.A. are not yet ready for practical useB. may eventually replace bees in the futureC. are much more efficient than bee pollinatorsD. can provide a solution to economic depressionDWorld’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train LineLast Wednesday, five hydrogen-powered trains began to make the 100-kilometer trip between Cuxhaven and Buxtehude in Germany. The trains make almost no noise and run without polluting. Germany is planning to replace many of its diesel (柴油) trains with hydrogen trains.Currently, most trains run on diesel power. When diesel fuel is burned, it creates carbon dioxide and other polluting gases. These gases have helped create the climate crisis. That’s one reason why many countries are trying to find energy choices that pollute less.Hydrogen is the simplest known element. It’s also very common—74% of the universe is made of hydrogen atoms. Pure hydrogen is a gas that burns easily. Hydrogen can be. used to create electricity by combining it with oxygen in a “fuel cell”. The chemical reaction wh ich takes place creates electricity. A fuel cell is like a battery that never runs down as long as it has hydrogen. The oxygen comes from the air around the train. The best part is that when a fuel cell creates electricity, it doesn’t create pollution. The only thing it gives off is water, which comes out as steam. There’s a hydrogen station on the line to refuel the trains. But since the trains can go about 1,000 kilometers before they need more fuel, they only need to fill up once a day. The trains can go as fast as 140 kph—about the same as the diesel trains they are replacing. In many places, hydrogen-powered trains are a smart choice for replacing diesel trains.
