Anyone interested in easy ways to make a positive impact on their communities needs to lookno further than 12-year-old Danykah: Muck, a Michigan middle-schooler whose simple learning project is an inspiration to positive thinkers of any age. It all started with her way to school every school day. Every morning she would greet an old man in her neighborhood, who she still doesn't know his name, smiling or even simply offering a friendly word “hello”. And he would always nodand smile back. “It seems to considerably change the emotional energy around me in the community.”She noticed this in both directions, “That simple act can both change our entire day with how they greet me.”

Last spring, Muck brought an idea to her teachers. She provided them with a pile of sticky notes she had filled with brief-sometimes one-word-positive messages. She then asked the teachers to place the notes on students' desks before they arrived at school the next day. She also gave pre-filled sticky notes to the lunch staff and to school administrators including the principal. The idea was to make it easy for teachers, staff and students to regularly encounter reminders that they matter and are valued. “You are enough just being you,” reads one favorite note. Muck's idea could be just the thing in an office, an assisted living facility or even at home for asmall family.

“Low-cost” positive interact ions, like a friendly word offered to the postal worker or coffee shop servant, are shown by psychology researchers to build sympathy and abate loneliness. Ananonymous note sent into someone's inbox or stuck to their front door is perhaps the lowest-costconnection there is, with potential benefits beyond our imagination. Sometimes the small estencouragements have the biggest impact. What would you say on a sticky note to share with someone in your community?

4. What message does paragraph I convey?

A. Middle-schoolers are friendly to the elderly

B. A simple act of kindness makes a difference.

C. A community can be easily shaped by interest.

D. Learning projects can inspire positive thinkers.

5. How did Muck help people in her school?

A. By writing thank-you letters.

B. By means of sticking notices.

C. By talking with school leaders

D. By writing encouraging words.

6. What does the underlined word “abate” probably mean?

A.Measure.

B.Monitor.

C.Ease.

D.Stand.

7. The best title for the text is probably

A. What a friendly word means to a stranger

B. Never be bothered by negative thoughts

C. Brighten the community with positivity

D. How to build a harmonious community

One day, gardeners might not just hear the buzz of bees among their flowers, but the whirr of robots, too. Scientists have managed to turn an unassuming drone (无人机) into a remote-controlled pollinator (授粉媒介) by attaching horsehairs coated with a special, sticky gel to its underbelly.

Animal pollinators are needed for the reproduction of 90% of flowering plants and one third of human food crops. Chief among those are bees — but many bee populations in the United States have been in steep decline in recent decades. Thus, the decline of bees isn't just worrisome because it could disrupt ecosystems, but also because it could disrupt agriculture and economy. People have been trying to come up with replacement techniques, but none of them are especially effective yet.

Scientists have thought about using drones, but they haven't figured out how to make free-flying robot insects that can rely on their own power source without being attached to a wire. “It’s very tough work,” said senior author Eijiro Miyako, a chemist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. His particular contribution to the field involves a gel, one he’d considered a mistake 10 years before and stuck in a storage cabinet. When it was rediscovered a decade later, it hadn’t dried up or degraded at all. “I was so surprised because it still had high viscosity,” Miyako said.

The chemist noticed that when dropped, the gel absorbed an impressive amount of dust from the floor. Miyako realized this material could be very useful for picking up pollen (花粉). He and his colleagues chose a drone and attached horsehairs to its smooth surface to mimic a bee’s fuzzy body. They coated those horsehairs in the gel, and then controlled the drones over lilies, where they would pick up the pollen from one flower and then deposit the pollen at another one, thus fertilizing it.

The scientists looked at the hairs under a scanning electron microscope and counted up the pollen grains attached to the surface and found that the drones whose horsehairs had been coated with the gel had about 10 times more pollen than those that had not been coated with the gel.

Miyako does not think such drones would replace bees altogether, but could simply help bees with their pollinating duties. There’s a lot of work to be done before that's a reality, however. Small drones will need to become more controllable and energy efficient, as well as smarter, with better GPS and artificial intelligence.

8. What does the underlined word “viscosity” in Para.3 probably mean?

A. Hardness.

B. Stickiness.

C. Flexibility.

D. Purity.

9. We can learn from the passage that ______.

A. bees disrupt both agriculture and economy

B. scientists have invented self-powered robot insects

C. bees in the United States are on the edge of extinction

D. Miyako found the special feature of the gel by chance

10. A drone works best in picking up pollen when ______.

A. its body is made like a bee’s

B. its GPS works more efficiently

C.some flowers are coated with the gel

D. horsehairs with the gel are attached to it

11. According to Eijiro Miyako, the drones ______.

A. are not yet ready for practical use

B. may eventually replace bees in the future

C. are much more efficient than bee pollinators

D. can provide a solution to economic depression

D

World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train Line

Last Wednesday, five hydrogen-powered trains began to make the 100-kilometer trip between Cuxhaven and Buxtehude in Germany. The trains make almost no noise and run without polluting. Germany is planning to replace many of its diesel (柴油) trains with hydrogen trains.

Currently, most trains run on diesel power. When diesel fuel is burned, it creates carbon dioxide and other polluting gases. These gases have helped create the climate crisis. That’s one reason why many countries are trying to find energy choices that pollute less.

Hydrogen is the simplest known element. It’s also very common—74% of the universe is made of hydrogen atoms. Pure hydrogen is a gas that burns easily. Hydrogen can be. used to create electricity by combining it with oxygen in a “fuel cell”. The chemical reaction wh ich takes place creates electricity. A fuel cell is like a battery that never runs down as long as it has hydrogen. The oxygen comes from the air around the train. The best part is that when a fuel cell creates electricity, it doesn’t create pollution. The only thing it gives off is water, which comes out as steam.

There’s a hydrogen station on the line to refuel the trains. But since the trains can go about 1,000 kilometers before they need more fuel, they only need to fill up once a day. The trains can go as fast as 140 kph—about the same as the diesel trains they are replacing.

In many places, hydrogen-powered trains are a smart choice for replacing diesel trains. The city of Frankfurt, Germany has already ordered 27 of the hydrogen-powered trains. Other countries are also interested. France and Italy have ordered several of the hydrogen powered trains. Germany will replace up to 3,000 of its diesel trains with hydrogen- powered

trains.

12. Why do people develop hydrogen train?

A. To reduce noise.

B. To cut pollution.

C. To improve transport.

D. To solve the energy problem.

13. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?

A. Advantages of hydrogen.

B. The process of chemical reaction.

C. The unpolluted characteristic of hydrogen.

D. The popularity of hydrogen.

14. What can we infer about the hydrogen train from paragraph 4?

A.It travels 140 km on one refueling.

B. It should be refueled twice a day.

C. It goes faster than a normal train.

D. It needs very few hydrogen stations.

15. What does the author think of the future of hydrogen trains?

A. Uncertain.

B. Worrying.

C. Promising.

D. Difficult.

The incident happened on Sunday at around 2:30 a.m. A car’s GPS system directed a group of teenage girls into the Pascagoula River. The car floated 25 yards into the river and then began to sink. The girls escaped to the vehicle’s rooftop where they shouted for help in fear. Corion Evans, a 16-year old high school student, heard their calls from nearby. Without a second thought, he immediately threw down his phone, removed his shirt and shoes, jumped into the river and swam out to them. His heroic act was soon reported and brought to the attention of the city government.

“I was just like, ‘I can’t let any of these folks die. They need to get out of the water’”, Corion recalled. “So, I just started getting them. I wasn’t even thinking about anything else.”

A strong and confident swimmer since childhood, Corion’s instincts (本能) kicked in when he heard the girls’ cries for help. With the ve hicle nearly out of sight and completely sunk into the water, he knew the situation called for quick action. He focused on the task of pulling the girls to safety as quickly as possible. Corion helped calm the panicked girls when he reached the girls. He swam and guided the first two girls safely back to shore.

“I was behind them trying to keep them above water and swim with them at the same time,” Corion recalled.

The third girl did not know how to swim and had remained on the car roof. When Corion turned back to help her, Officer Gary Mercer had already arrived on scene to assist. He jumped into the river before pulling off his uniform. However, at one point Mercer was bringing the girl to shore, she began panicking and caused him to go under swallowing some water. Then Mercer began struggling to stay afloat due to the heavy weight of his uniform and equipment on him.

“I turned around. I saw the police officer,” Corion recalled. “He’s in trouble. He’s going underwater, drowning, shouting, ‘help!’”

Corion swam as fast as he could toward them.

重庆市璧山来凤中学2022-2023学年高二下学期第一次月考英语试卷学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解 It is that time of the year, when a handful of world’s leading scholars, social activists and researchers are rewarded with what is often cited as the most prestigious acknowledgement of human effort-the Nobel Prize. Here’s a look at who has won the prize and for what. Physiology or Medicine Swedish geneticist Svante Peabo won the first Nobel of the year, for starting the field of ancient DNA studies. He is well-known for extracting, sequencing, and analyzing ancient DNA from Neanderthal bones. Physics Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger’s work in quantum (量子) technology landed them the second Nobel Prize announced in 2022. Although Aspect is from France, Clauser from the U.S, and Zeilinger from Austria, the three separately performed “groundbreaking experiments” as one team. “Their results have cleared the way for new technology,” the committee stated. Chemistry The Nobel Prize for chemistry went to another trio, Carolyn R. Bertozzi from the U.S., Morten Meldal from Denmark and K. Barry Sharpless from the U.S. “for the development of click chemistry and biorthogonal chemistry,” the committee stated. Dr. Bertozzi is the eighth woman chemist to be awarded the prize, while Dr. Sharpless is the fifth scientist to be awarded two Nobel Prizes. 安徽省安庆市2022-2023学年高二下学期第一次月考英语试卷(含答案)

安徽省安庆市2022-2023学年高二下学期第一次月考英语试卷 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解 It was the small hours of the morning when we reached London Airport. I had telegrammed London from Amsterdam, and there was a hired car to meet, but there was one more unfortunate happening before I reached my flat. In all my travels I have never, but for that once, been required by the British customs to open a single bag or to do more than state that I carried no goods liable to duty. It was, of course, my fault; the extreme tiredness and nervous tension of the journey had destroyed my diplomacy (处世之道). I was, for whichever reason, so tired that I could hardly stand, and to the question, “Have you read this?”I replied with extreme foolishness, “Yes, hundreds of times.” “And you have nothing to declare?” “Nothing.” “How long have you been out of this country?” “About three months.” “And during that time you have acquired nothing?” “Nothing but what is on the list I have given you.” He seemed immediately at a loss, but then he attacked. The attack, when it came, was completely unexpected. "Where did you get that watch?" I could have kicked myself. Two days before, when playing water games with a friend in the bath, I had forgotten to take off my ROLEX OYSTER, and it had, not unnaturally, stopped. I had gone into the market and bought, for twelve shillings and six pence, an ugly time piece that made a strange noise. It had stopped twice, without any reason, during the journey. I explained, but I had already lost face. I brought out my old watch from a pocket, and added that I should be grateful if he would confiscate (没收) the replacement. “It is not a question of confiscation,” he said, “ there is a fine for failing to declare dutiable goods. And now may I please examine that Rolex?” It took another quarter of an hour to persuade him that the Rolex was not contraband (走私货). Just when I let out a sigh of relief, he began to search my luggage! 1、What can we conclude from the questions asked by the customs officer? A.He was just doing his duty by asking the passenger some usual questions.

高二英语下学期第一次月考试题(含答案)

高二英语下学期第一次月考试题 (满分150分,时间100分钟。答题卡部分从21题开始。) 第二部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题3分,共6 0分) 第一节(共15小题,每小题3分,共45分) A Will there ever be another Einstein? This is the undercurrent (潜流) of conversation at Einstein memorial meetings throughout the year. A new Einstein will appear, scientists say. But it may take a long time. After all, more than 200 years separated Einstein from Isaac Newton. Many physicists say the next Einstein hasn't been born yet, or is a baby now. That's because the search for a unified theory that would explain all the forces of nature has pushed current mathematics to its limits. New math must be created after the problem can be solved. But researchers say there are many other factors working against another Einstein appearing anytime soon. For one thing, physics is a much different field today. In Einstein's day, there were a few thousand physicists worldwide, and the theorists who could argue with Einstein probably would fit into a streetcar with seats to spare. Education is different, too. One key aspect of Einstein's training that-is little noticed is the years of philosophy he read as a teenager-Kant, Schopenhauer and Spinoza, among others. It taught him how to think independently about space and time and it wasn't long before he became a philosopher himself. And Einstein was a clever musician. The interplay between music and math is well-known. Einstein would play his violin hard as a way to think through a knotty physics problem. Today, universities have produced millions of physicists. There aren't many jobs in science for them, so they go to Wall Street and Silicon Valley to apply their analytical skills. Those who stay in science don't work alone and they sometimes do experiment together which takes years. It's hard to imagine a renegade (背叛者) like Einstein standing it. "Maybe there is an Einstein out there today," said Columbia University physicist Brian Greene,"but it would be a lot harder for him to be heard." 21.According to the second paragraph, the next Einstein will _____. A. have to create new math B. create a unified theory C. have to be born now D. push math to its limits 22. The underlined words "knotty" in the fourth paragraph means _____. A. easy B. interesting C. strange D. difficult 23. Which of the following will be useful for the next Einstein to be born? A. There will be music around. B. There will be no problems to solve.
