The summer is not a good season for most people because of its hot weather. You’ve probably also got memories of asking your parents for money to buy one of those big chocolate ice creams, and being refused.

Well, Matt Allen, known as the Ice Cream Man, is here to give both children and adults unforgettable memories of summer. For the last four years, Allen has spent his summers driving around in an old ice cream truck named Bessie, handing out free ice creams to children and adults. He’s travelled over 15,000 miles, and handed out more than 125,000 free ice creams. At first Allen wanted to earn money by selling ice creams as most people would. In his first season of selling, he made a lot of money, yet had so many ice creams left that he wasn’t sure what to do with them. So he decided to give them away. That may se em like a strange thing to do, but the Ice Cream Man did it. "You go through your life thinking you can change the world or thinking you cannot," he says. "If those are the only two choices, why not at least try?" "If I’m not going to make any money selling ice creams, why not give them away, and make people happy?" Allen says. And so, every summer since that first one, he’s travelled from coast to coast across America in his old Bessie, giving away ice creams.

Australia is a young nation, and the Australian people come from many different cultural backgrounds. As you make friends here, you’ll find there is no such a thing as a "typical" Australian. You’ll come across many social customs and views of life, some of which may be very new to you. Here we want to tell you some of the different ways of greeting. First names are used more often in Australia than in many other countries. Australians often greet their friends, and even people they don’t know, with "Hey, mate(同伴)"or" How is it going, guys?". An Australian may encourage you to call his given name. A nickname is most commonly used among friends, and is a sign of acceptance and friendship. The formal title or family name is only used in formal or other special situations, such as first meetings, or when speaking to someone like a professor. Titles like Mr, Mrs, Ms or Dr are then used with the family name.

In Australia one looks directly at someone when talking, to show interest in what he or she is saying. Australians make direct eye contact regardless of (不顾) social position, and children are taught to look directly at adults. There are also other typical Austrialian customs. For example, it is not considered impolite to give someone something with your left hand.

60. The passage is mainly about ______.

A. how to get along with others

B. when to talk to people

C. how to greet others in Australia

D. where to stay in Australia

61. If you call a person’s nickname in Australia, it probably means that ____.

A. you are close friends

C. you don’t like his real name

D. you like calling nicknames

62. From the passage we learn that Australians _______.

A. are serious about how people call them

B. call given names when meeting anyone for the first time

C. don’t use formal titles when talking to professors

D. don’t mind others’giving something with their left hand

63. According to the last paragraph, when talking to Australians, you should ____.

A. call their family names

B. make direct eye contact

C. call their formal titles

D. show interest in them

Japan’s robot teacher smiles at and scolds (责备) the students, which brings them laughter with her lively face. The robot teacher, Saya, can express six feelings —surprise, fear, disgust (厌恶), anger, happiness and sadness.

In a show, Saya pulled back her lips to make a smile, and said simple pre-programmed (预排程序的) words such as "Thank you". "Robots that look like humans are often a big hit among children and old people," said Hiroshi Kobayashi, Saya’s developer. "Children even started laughing when they were praised." "First Saya was developed as a receptionist (接待员) robot in 2004, and she was tested in a real Tokyo classroom earlier this year. Although she still only called out names and shouted orders like 'Be quiet’, the children had great fun. Still, it was just remote-controlled by a human who was watching the class through cameras," he added.

Japan and other nations hope that robotics can be used to take care of children and old people, and help solve the problems of older people who are not able to work. Robotics expert Noel Sharkey believes robots c an serve as an educational aid in encouraging interest in science, but they can’t replace humans.

"It would be impossible for such robots to replace a human teacher," he said. "Leading scientists, engineers and mathematicians often talk about a teacher who encouraged them. A robot cannot be that kind of role model."

Kobayashi said Saya was just made to help people. "The robot has neither intelligence (智力) nor the ability to learn. It is just a tool."

64. For what purpose was Saya first designed?

A. To act as a receptionist.

B. To act as a school teacher.

C. To look after children and old people.

D. To serve as an educational aid.

65. Among children and old people, robots that look like humans are _________.

A. frightening

B. unreal

C. strange

D. Popular

66. According to the passage, we can learn that ________.

A. Saya can only say "Thank you"and "Be quiet"

B. human-like robots can make choices by themselves

C. a real teacher cannot be replaced by a robot

D. a robot is able to learn new things by itself

67. What Kobayashi said in the last paragraph implies that _________.

A. he is proud of his work in designing robots

B. he has decided to design robots with intelligence

C. people shouldn’t expect too much of robots

D. robots can help people a lot in teaching

D难度★★

You will spend hours at the gym training your body, but do you ever think about training your brain? Here are four ways to keep your brain mentally (脑力上地) active and healthy.

Play games

Your brain is a muscle, and just like the ones in the rest of your body. If you don’t use it, you will lose it. For example, doing a crossword puzzle (纵横填字游戏) once a day is a good way to give the brain the workout it needs. This kind of puzzle is good at working different areas of the brain. But remember that when doing this puzzle, you should gradually increase the complexity (复杂度); otherwise, it will become repetitive (重复乏味的) and stop being mentally challenging.

Talk aloud

Although it might look strange to you, talking aloud is a great way to boost your memory. A good exercise to try is counting to 99 in threes, as fast as you can.

Be a team leader

If you find you can do your work very easily, you should find a new task. It is important that your job should be mentally challenging. Complex jobs are often more challenging and make the brain work a little harder.

Learn a language

A study found that, compared with those who could speak only one language, the people who could speak two languages had a slower rate of cognitive (认知能力) decline. Learning a new language is very challenging and it makes sure that different areas of the brain have their lights on.

68. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Why you should train your brain.

B. How to be a good team leader.

C. Training the brain is more important than training the body.

D. How to make your brain healthy and work actively.

69. Which word can replace the word "boost" in the third paragraph?

A. Change.

B. Promote.

C. Decrease.

D. Lose.

70. You should gradually increase the complexity when doing crossword puzzles because

______.

A. if we don’t use our brain, we will lose it

B. we should make our brain face different challenges

C. our brain is a muscle like other parts in our bodies

D. these puzzles can work different areas of the brain

71. Which sorts of people have a slower rate of cognitive decline?

A. Those who don’t often do crossword puzzles.

B. Those who don’t often count to 99 in threes.

C. Those who do their work very easily.

D. Those who can speak more than one language.

Ellen Gates Starr was born in Illinois in 1859. Together with her life-long friend, Jane Addams, she founded the Hull House in Chicago. It became the first charity centre for entertainment and education in the United States, which officially opened in 1889.

Hull House was an important charity centre for many Chicago immigrants that needed help. It started as a nursery (托儿所) where their children were being looked after very well. The mothers of the children would sit in a room to talk. The house later developed into a larger house of education. Here, people could take classes, do activities and learn English. And as time went by, more services were offered, including clinics (诊所) and different types of classes to further the children’s education.

Starr began to teach at Hull House. She showed girls how to cook and sew. She also created art classes. Over the years, Starr became well-known among the local people. She was called "the leading coordinator (协调人) for cultural activities at Hull House".

In her later years, Starr tried to transform child labor laws and help poor immigrant factory workers earn more money and make work much easier for them. She was close to all women and spent time learning about their race, their background, their culture and their customs. Many immigrants looked up to her because she helped to improve their life. She died in 1940. To this day, Hull House is still a national landmark.

72. According to the passage, the original reason for opening Hull House was to _______.

A. provide a place for education

B. give women a place to talk

C. provide a place for children

D. give women a place to work

73. Which of the following is NOT true, according to the passage?

A. Starr founded Hull House with her good friend.

B. Further education was offered to women at Hull House.

C. Starr taught girls how to cook and sew at Hull House.

D. Starr got on well with all the women at Hull House.

74. The underlined words in the fourth paragraph mean "________".

A. encouraged

B. served

C. challenged

D. respected

75. We can learn from the passage that _______.

A. Hull House has become a famous symbol in the USA

B. Hull House was founded when Starr was at the age of 35

Unit 16 Stories Warm-up Tapescript 1 It was a dark and foggy night. We drove and drove. At midnight, just as we thought we were lost, we saw a light behind some trees. As we got nearer, we could see a house. It looked abandoned. We knocked on the heavy door. It opened slowly. A tall man dressed entirely in black stood there. “Good evening,” he said in a slow, deep voice. “I've been expecting you.” 2 We were travelling through deep space at the speed of light. Suddenly, the spaceship slowed down and immediately the system came into view – a bright star with twenty or more planets. One of these would be our new home, five light years from our own planet. 3 One of my earliest memories is of my father running along the beach with our dog, Tess. I must have been about three years old. I remember the dog jumping up on me and knocking me over into the water. 4 The man lay on the ground next to a white truck. There was no doubt. He was dead. I quickly looked in the pockets of his jacket – some money, a handkerchief and a theatre ticket with a Chicago phone number written on it. Three murders in three weeks and the victims all killed in the same way.

Unit 1 Lifestyles Warm-up Tapescript 1 Football player: Being famous isn’t easy, you know. I travel a lot – I have matches in different countries. But my job is exciting, very exciting! I love the matches, the people cheering, know what I mean? 2 Student: My dad says these are the best days of my life –but I’m not so sure! You know, I’ve got lots of work to do and there’s not much time really. I also play football for the school team and we have to do training three nights a week. 3 Shepherd: I love th e animals and I love nature. It’s peaceful, and there’s no one to tell me what to do. But it’s not so good when the weather’s bad! 4 Business manager: I’m very busy, and I don’t have time to see my husband and children. Mmmm and my life is very stressful, I suppose. I mean, I have to deal with lots of money. But I find it really exciting. 1 A Perfect Day? A Couch Potato Forty-three-year-old Brian Blakey from Birmingham is sitting on his sofa and telling me about his perfect day. When I wake up I don't get up immediately. I turn on the television and watch the children's programmes and old movies until about half-past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room. For lunch, I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film – they're showing some good ones at the moment. In the evenings, I often watch TV series or sport and the news again. I like the main news at six o'clock. At nine thirty, if there is a good play on BBC 2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night, I watch more films and I usually switch off the TV at about two o'clock. I never watch TV all night. I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don't go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable TV and I sit on the stone wall while the dog walks round in a circle. Of course, I couldn't live this lifestyle without a good wife. She's not here now because she's working, but she always makes my meals. We haven't got much money, you know, but we're happy. Sit down and watch TV. Here's the remote control. You've got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great! A Workaholic Thirty-six-year-old Bob Black is sitting at his desk and working his way through his paperwork. I normally wake up about five minutes before my alarm clock goes off. As soon as I hear my alarm clock, I jump out of my bed. It takes me less than fifteen minutes to wash, get changed, have breakfast, leave home and get on a bus. I am always the first person to get to the office. The mornings are always very busy and the afternoons are even busier! Meetings and phone calls take up a large part of the day. Every minute
