Since the restoration process began, at least 15 wells have been restored in the city of Delhi. The cost will be around $60,000, but by doing so, the water supply for the city could reach an additional 33,000 gallons. Rajkumar Sharma, a local citizen, said, “I was elated at the reuse of the stepwells. The stepwell in our village was the only source of water. With time, it had dried up and changed into a place for rubbish. We now have access to clean water for drinking and other purposes.”

2022高考英语二轮阅读理解精选(01)及解析A(·湖北卷,A) Honesty,my mum always used to tell me,is the best policy.Of course, this didn't include her when she told me that if I didn't eat all my vegetables Father Christmas would find out and wouldn't give me any presents. But when it comes to medicine,I had assumed it was important to always be honest with my patients. After all,the doctor-patient relationship is based on trust, and therefore honesty is essential. Or so I thought.I had just started working in geriatrics (老年病科).Mr.McMahon was brought in when his belly was found very swollen.I took a medical history from his daughter who'd accompanied him in the ambulance. She'd been his main carer for years.I stood looking at him as she gave a detailed history.“Has he lost any weight recently?” I asked,“Well,it's funny you should mention that, but yes,” she said slowly. There was silence for a few moments.“Why? What are you worried about” she asked,I hesitated. She was obviously very involved in his care and it was only fair that I told her the truth.“Well,we need to prove it's not cancer.”I said and talked briefly about some of the tests I was going to order.Half an hour later,a nurse called me: “Mr.McMahon's daughter broke down—she said you told her he had cancer.” My heart sank.By the time I arrived at the ward,my consultant was already there, explaining that we still had to run lots of tests and that it was by no means confirmed that he had cancer.I stood silently at the end of the bed.My consultant was obviously angry with me and as we left Mr.McMahon, she turned to me.“Why on earth did you do that?”she asked in disbelief.I looked at her and bit my lip.“She asked me what I was worried about and I told her.” I said,hanging_my_head.“And give her more to worry about?”replied my consultant.“You don't say the word ‘cancer’ until it's confirmed.Even if you suspect it,think very carefully before you tell people.”As it turned out,it wasn't cancer. But I did learn that when someone is stressed and worried about their loved one they're sometimes selective in what they hear—and as a doctor it's important to be mindful of this.In being truthful,I'd made the situation worse.原本在一位大夫的心目中,诚实是第一位的;而且在工作中也是奉行诚实本分的处世原则。

(2022·河北省普通高中毕业班高考适应性考试)When both of Marcus Edwards' kidneys (肾) failed, he was put on a list of people in desperate need of finding a donor (捐献者). Until he could find one, he had to rely on dialysis (透 析), a treatment that would give him around five years of support. Marcus had to experience this timeconsuming process five days a week for three hours at a time.
He decided to use this as an opportunity to let people across the country know he was in search of a kidney! His sign never made it on television like he'd hoped, but it did catch the eye of a woman sitting near them in the stadium. She asked if she could take a photo of Marcus with the sign so she could share it online, and he happily agreed.

When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel(建议) parents looking for data about the effect of e-readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time.
I'm secretly relieved because I know there's real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.
( )1.What is the Common Sense Media report probably about?
A.Children's reading habits.
B.Quality of children's books.
C.Children's after-class activities.
【思路点拨】 1.C 推理判断题。由第一段“You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers,then I will do it.”可以推断出,她并非自愿,故选C。 2.B 词义猜测题。由于第二段中“tug at the heartstrings”意为“触动心弦”, encourage team work意为“鼓励团队合作”,appeal to feeling意为“感情用事”, promote good deeds意为“提倡好的行为”,provide advice意为“提供建议”。从各 个选项的大意看来,本题正确选项应为B。
3.D 推理判断题。由第三段“the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team”可知,家长最终会成为这个团队中的非常重要的一员,也是这个 团队非常好的帮手,故选D。
4 . B 推 理 判 断 题 。 由 最 后 一 段 “ I'm pretty sure volunteering … in the process…”可知,作者认为志愿者的工作可以让她得到快乐,并且志愿去帮助他人 会让她感到很棒,故选B。
(2018全国卷Ⅱ,C) Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday. While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children's lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading. According to the report's key findings, “the proportion (比例) who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13-year-olds and 9 percent of 17-year-olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today.”
As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom(逼近) ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.

(2019全国卷Ⅱ, B篇) “You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids lacrosse(长曲棍球) club. I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren't even on … At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,“Alright. Yes, I'll do it.”
D.Parent-child relationships.
( )2.What does the underlined phrase“tug at the heartstrings”in paragraph 2 mean ?
A.Encourage team work. B.Appeal to feelings. C.Promote good deeds. D.Provide advice. ( )3.What can we learn about the parent from paragraph 3? A.She gets interested in lacrosse. B.She is proud of her kids. C.She'll work for another season. D.She becomes a good helper.
The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading.Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.
In that sense, I'm pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I'd freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies?
The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2—ame.But the amount of time spent in reading each session has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session.
