Crime, drugs, fighting and poverty: You name the problem and his neighborhood had it. A scholarship fund provided his tuition to Catholic High, where he was a great baseball player.Mark struggled in the classroom, though. He was bright, just behind, due to a more than difficult home environment. But there were problems finding the time for all he needed to do. After-school tutoring seemed impossible because of baseball practice. Some suggested Mark abandon sports and concentrate on “schooling”. But, in reality, if he was going to attend college he would need his sports; so to miss practice and then perform any less than at his best on the field was not wise.A fellow teacher, Mrs. Jones, offered to tutor Mark in math at her home. I asked Mark to come to my house for other areas of work. No one paid us. Mrs. Jones summed it up this way: “Pay day doesn’t always come on Mondays.”When we were not working with Mark to improve his skills for the ACT, the coach and Mark’s dad took him to various colleges to talk with both baseball and football program coaches. He settled on the one college that offered him scholarships to play both sports. But he needed a good ACT score. It takes months to receive the results of college entrance exams. One afternoon after school, while I was grading papers in my room, there was a noise outside the door.Mark came in, lifted me out of the seat behind my desk, spun me around in the air, and yelled over and over: “I’m going to college! I’m going to college!”“I guess you got your scores!” I asked.“Well, yeah!” he laughed. “And guess what? I got one point more than I need to be admitted. One point extra. Thank you! Now, where’s Mrs. Jones? I’ve got to tell her too!”Until that moment, I had never quite understood what the expression “Pay day doesn’t always come on Mondays” meant. But it was clear to me the instant Mark ran into the room to announce his news. No amount of money could ever replace my spin in the air at the hands of a boy who finally had a chance at a better life.56. Mark had difficulty in learning mainly because ___________.A. He spent most of his spare time practicing baseball.B. His family couldn’t afford any tutoring for him.C. His parent didn’t care about his study.D. Theft was a problem in Mark’s neighborhood.C. Mark owed his success in passing ACT to his teachers.D. Mark went to college mainly due to his good ACT score.58. Never Give up on YourselfBLOS ANGELES—Say it is Mickey Mouse, say it is Goofy, but 65 years after Walt Disney’s death, he is having a successful career as an adviser.Disney’s quotations are not as widely known as those of Benjamin Franklin or Winston Churchill, but Walt is increasingly quoted, especially in business books, where such Disney sayings as “If you can dream it, you can do it” are fast becoming favorites.Never regarded in life as particularly intellectual, Walt is not known to have said anything that sounds like Churchill’s “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma(难解的谜).” But however common the phrasing, Walt’s wit and wisdom are often quoted by today’s business writers. Now, more than 200 of Walt’s best sayings have been collected in the book “The Quotable Walt Disney.”The little square book is filled with common sense sayings. Animation, the theme parks, and making your dreams come true are favorite subjects. And because Disney was frequently asked the secret of his success, it is no surprise to read, among Walt’s explanations: “I suppose my formula might be: dream, diversity—and never miss an angle.”Business expert adviser Bill Capodagli of Indianapolis is one of several authors who advise their readers to use Disney’s principles as a model for how to run a business. Another adviser described the book as “so useful you may whistle while you work.”Those who actually knew Walt do not remember him as being particularly talkative, especially employees who felt his legendary anger. And while he loved to have people with great ability working for him, he had little tolerance for the self-important. As he said: “Whenever I don’t have the answer to something, I find someone who does.”Many businessmen found their favorite quote as “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing—that was all started by a mouse.”60. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Disney’s key to success was found.B. Business books quote Walt Disney.C. A successful career becomes known.D. Different quotes have different values.61. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Disney published “The Quotable Walt Disney” filled with common sense sayings.B. Benjamin Franklin and Churchill are both better at their quotes than Disney.C. In Disney’s times people did not often use Walt Disney’s quotes.D. It is Bill Capodagli who found Disney’s ability.62. When Disney found people with great ability, he would ____________.A. think they were self-importantB. be tolerant to everything they didC. ask them for answers to problemsD. be dissatisfied and angry with them63. In the 6th paragraph the author mainly wants to talk about __________.A. the career of the great man, Walt DisneyB. the famous people’s opinion on Disney’s quotesC. the reasons why businessmen like Disney’s quotesD. the value of Disney’s quotesCLatrice Brown was excited about starting her junior year. Lincoln High School starts the orientation program in order to _______.A. find excellent freshmenB. avoid mistakes in schedulesC. make the school outstandingD. meet the needs of freshmenDPeople often said, “Yes, we should teach children these values, but how do we teach them?” This question deserves deliberation(深思熟虑).To begin with, it is by exposing our children to good character and inviting its imitation that we will transmit to them a moral foundation. As Oxford’s Mary Warnock has written, “You cannot teach morality without being committed to morality yourself.” As Education Secretary, I visited a class at Waterbury Elementary School in Vermont, and asked the students, “Is this a good school?” They answered, “Yes, this is a good school.” I asked them, “Why?” One eight-year-old said, “The principal Mr. Riegel, makes good rules and everybody obeys them.” And another added, “You can’t climb on the pipes in the bathroom. We don’t climb on the pipes and the principal doesn’t either.”This example is probably too simple to please a lot of people who want to make the topic of moral education difficult, but there is something profound in it. You can’t expect children to take messages about rules or morality seriously unless they see adults taking those rules seriously in their day-to-day affairs. At the same time, we should also do a better job at curriculum selection. The research shows that most “values education” exercises and courses in “moral reasoning” tend not to affect children’s behavior. Where to turn? I believe our literature and our history are a rich quarry (资源) of moral education. We should mine that quarry. Children should have at their disposal a stock of examples illustrating what we believe to be right and wrong, good and bad. What kind of stories am I talking about? If we want our children to know about honesty, we should teach them about Lincoln walking three miles to return six cents. If we want them to know about courage, we should teach them about Horatius at the bridge. If we want them to know about persistence in the face of adversity, they should know about the voyages of Columbus. As any parent knows, teaching character is a difficult task. But it is a crucial task, because we want our children to be not only healthy, happy, and successful but decent, strong, and good. None of this happens automatically; there is no genetic transmission of virtue. It takes the conscious, committed efforts of adults. It takes careful attention.68. What’s the main purpose of this passage?A. To call on American students to learn more about their country’s literature and history.B. To ask schools to do a thorough reform on their curriculum.C. To give suggestions on how to teach children values.D. To prove that character building of children is a difficult process.69. Which of the following educating methods is the writer probably in favor of?A. Parents keep reminding children to obey rules of morality.B. Teachers tell interesting stories or jokes in class to arouse students’ attention.C. Schools offer a more diversified curriculum.D. Literature and history, when used properly, can contribute to education of morality.70. What does the underlined sentence mean?A. There’s more than one factor which affects the formation of our virtues.B. Children tend to have similar qualities as their parents do for biological reasons.C. Only through hard and consistent work can parents expect their child to be a man of virtue.D. We should take our genes into consideration before teaching children values.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)I have heard that fluoride (氟化物) can help stop dental decay (腐烂), but I recently read that it is poisonous. Which of these is true? 71This question is answered by Dr Marcia M. Rich who practices general dentistry in Newholt. She is also a lecturer at the University and a writer for the monthly magazine Your Dentist Cares.72 . Young children have a tendency to swallow toothpaste, which is why they should only have a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste on their toothbrush. If this simple measure is taken, parents can be confident that children will be protected against tooth decay, and come to no harm.Almost all medicines have a harmful effect – or even be deadly – if they are not taken as directed. So you are right – fluoride can be poisonous if it is swallowed in very large quantities. It is for the reason that fluoride supplements can only be obtained on prescription from the doctor or dentist. 73 In fact, I have never heard of any fatal incidents related to fluoride poisoning.Scientific studies have shown that fluoride can help to prevent cavities (洞) as long as it is used correctly. 74 If a deadly amount of fluoride is taken, immediate first-aid could save a life. A person who has swallowed a large amount of fluoride will probably start vomiting. If not, the patient should be given milk or antacid and taken to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment.Taking too much fluoride while teeth are growing can lead to a condition called dental fluorosis. The most likely cause is the swallowing of fluoride toothpastes by young children.75 For example when fluoride is already present in drinking water.A. My answer to the first question is to stress that fluoride works well and is safe when users follow instructions.B. How can children use fluoride safely?C. You don’t have to worry about fluoride poisoning because it works well and is safe.D. Please believe me that fluoride overdoses are rare.E. If fluoride is used correctly, it will not cause any problem.F. If fluoride is abused, there is a risk of illness or even deaths in extreme cases.G. It can also be caused by inappropriate use of fluoride drop or other fluoride supplements.第四部分:书面表达(共两节,35分)第一节情景作文(20分)假设你是李华,18岁,曾辅导过小学生英语。
