You might even think it’s stupid to admit (承认) that you’re lonely. But being lonely doesn’t mean someone has few friends. There could b e a number of reasons for this. Perhaps their close friends have moved away, perhaps something unexpected has pulled them away from some of their friends, or any number of things that can happen to anyone at any time. Another wrong belief is that lonely people just aren’t busy enough.Don’t say these things to a lonely friend:● Lonely? Ha! I never get lonely! I’m so busy.●Why don’t you have any friends?●Oh, I’d love to have some quiet time as you have.●I wish I were lonely, but my kids keep me running.●You’ll be fine. Anyone who has ever gone to high school or at least seen a John Hughes’ movie knows the answer to that question. When Theresa Sommers first discovered MySpace three years ago, the teen from Minneapolis, St. Paul thought she had found the real high school popularity contest (比赛). She could spend hours a day creating an online picture, finding cool pictures and music to make her page look more beautiful, and looking for interesting-looking people to be her online friends. And along the way, she could compete (竞争) with her friends to see who had the most friends or most-visited page. The more she used the site, however, the less interested she became in only being popular; she started using her time for more heartfelt conversations with friends and went more deeply into her personal interests. As a beginner in taking pictures, she put her best pictures on the site and looked for advice from people who are good at taking pictures. At the same time, she began to get in touch with the students of the colleges she wanted to go to. She opened up a new account (账户) on Facebook. And she even began to put some of her own creative writing on the website and would ask for advice on homework from her friends. She asked them, “How long did you spend on y our homework?” or “How would you write it?” Often she would put her homework online.12. What’s a John Hughes’ movie most probably about?A.

But if you are meeting a friend offline, make sure your parents know. Teachers and parents all think the book is of great help. A teacher said the book would be a guide for teens using the Internet. But things now could not be more different. Some British sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday. They found that people get up later and do less housework than they did 40 years ago. They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying themselves than cooking Sunday lunch.Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago. Most women caught up on their weekly housework and cooked a nice lunch. They seldom allowed themselves any “leisure” until afternoon, after the dishes were cleaned. Then there wouldbe another rush to the table between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for tea.But now, Britons can have brunch (早午餐) at the restaurant. Fewer people bother (添麻烦)to cook themselves.“You only have two free days a week. You don’t want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch boring TV,” said Elizabeth Biggs,25, a producer in London.“On Saturday you are recovering from the week,” Biggs added. “Sundaysare the last chance for the weekend — you want to get as much as yo u can outof the day before you have to go back to work.”In the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, whilethe husband was at work. “Now men seem to do that as much as women,” said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study.Men also do more housework now on Sundays.
