I still remember the excitement I felt peeling back the protective plastic from my shiny new iPhone X. What a lovely piece of technology! That feeling didn’t last.I could point out a list of complaints, like how Face ID is inconsistent, the bright metal casing is easy to scratch, and the price tag is extremely high. But there’s really one shortc oming that matters to me.Though the phone is only a bit bigger than the iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8, the bigger screen dramatically changes how you interact with the device. The new gestures required by the notch (选择图标) at the top of the phone mean t here’s no way to look at my notifications (通知) with only one hand or access the control center. It considerably limits the usability of the phone when I’m on the go or when I have only one hand free. The top two rows of apps on the home screen are basically inaccessible without a sliding move, and it makes me suspicious I’m going to drop the $1,000 device. The fear of dropping the phone comes from the $549 bill spent repairing the cracked glass on its back. I hate the idea of risking that just trying to see my notifications. With my previous iPhone, the 6, I could use my pinky (小手指) as a kind of shelf for the phone to sit on as I tapped away, texting, checking email, or changing songs on Spotify. The X’s size doesn’t let that happen. I envied my friend when she showed me her new iPhone 8.At first, I thought it was just an adjustment period. I experienced something similar with my previous phone. Like the X’s new shape, the iPhone 6 represented a dramatic departure in form from previous iPhones. When I upgraded to the 6 from my iPhone 4S, I had similar doubts about one-handed use. I ended up falling in lovewith the phone. That same thing did not happen with the X a month into using it. Determined!24. According to the writer, what is exactly wrong with iPhone X?A. Its price is too high.B. Its screen is a bit too big.C. Its Face ID is inconsistent.D. Its metal frame is easy to scratch.25. How do you think the writer will look at the notifications for safe?A. Use the pinky as a shelf.B. Use the X with a sliding move.C. Use the X with both hands.D. Use the X with only one hand free.26. How much has the writer spent on the X?A. $451.B. $549.C. $1,000.D. $1,549.27. What do you think the writer will do according to the passage?A. He might prefer not to use the X.B. He will change his using habits.C. He will stop using iPhone.D. He will go on with the adjustment period.CWhen people learn to drive, they subconsciously absorb the “rules of the road”. The rules, however, rely heavily on common sense. They can be broken in an emergency, or help to avoid an accident. As a result, when accidents happen, it is not always clear who is at fault. All this poses a big problem for people to build autonomous vehicles(AVs). They want AVs to be able to share the roads smoothly and safely without human drivers in predictable ways. That means setting the rules of the road in a precise way that machines can understand. The problem, says Dr Karl lagnemma of an AV firm, is that every company is doing this in a different way.Last year, Dr Shashua and his colleagues published a first attempt to set a standardised set of rules called “Responsibility-Sensitive Safety”, and laid down mathematical rules for various events. Last month Voyage, another AV company, made a similar proposal, called “Open Autonomous Safety”, which also explains the correct, safe behavior for vehicles in a range of circumstances. This is all a good start, says Dr Karl Iagnemma. It will take years rather than months for the industry to work as one around a standard, he predicts. But he is optimistic that this will happen eventually, because discussions are already under way and many people working in the field of AVs consider sharing to be the second nature. One area where sharing would speed up the development of a safety standard is “edge cases” — rare events that tax the capabilities of autonomous systems, such as unexpected behavior by other drivers, plastic bags blowing in front of a vehicle and so on. Because such events occur occasionally, and computers lack common sense to decide how to respond, training AVs to handle edge cases is hard. But by sharing with each other data from edge cases that have actually happened, AV firms can test their systems in simulators (装置) to see how they would respond, and adjust them where needed, benefiting from each other's experience.28. What do we know about the “rules of the road”?A. They are shared by all AVs.B. They can be ambiguous when accidents occur.C. They remain unchangeable all the time.D. They make it easy to decide who is to blame in accidents.29. Which of the following might Dr Karl lagnemma agree with?A. Common standards will surely be set in the near future.B. Companies should set road rules for AVs separately.C. We should decide on correct, safe behavior for vehicles in all events.D. People may work on standardised road rules for AVs by sharing and joint efforts.30. What do “edge cases” in paragraph 4 refer to?A. Vital situations.B. Common situations.C. Infrequent situations.D. Emergency situations.31. What is the passage mainly talking about?A. How to set standardized rules for AVs.B. The significance of the “rules of the road”.C. Safe driving rules for AVs.D. How road rules are special to AVs.DA top Chinese technology executive is facing fraud (欺诈) charges in the United States connected to business dealings with Iran, a Canadian prosecutor said Friday.Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies —China's largest telecommunications equipment maker — was arrested in Vancouver on Dec.1 as she changed planes for Mexico. Canada's Justice Department said Meng, 46, who is the daughter of the company's founder, was detained (扣留) due to a United States extradition (引渡) request.John Gibb-Carsley, a prosecutor for the Canadian government, says the U.S. claims Huawei used a shell company to gain access to the Iran market in dealings that avoided U.S. punishment, the Associated Press reported. Fraud charges in the U.S. could bring up to 30 years in prison, Gibb-Carsley said.Influential state media linked to China's ruling Communist Party on Friday described Washington as a “despicable rogue”attempting to prevent China's global rise by arranging for Meng's arrest.News of her arrest aroused fears that it could influence a trade war truce (停战协议) struck last week by President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.“There is ample evidence to suggest that no major Chinese company is independent of the Chinese government and Communist Party —and Huawei, which China’s government and military claim as a ‘national champion’, is no exception,” said Sen. Mark Warner in a statement. Warner said Huawei “poses a threat to our national security”.Huawei denied the accusation and state media came down firmly on its side.China Daily, a separate Chinese government mouthpiece, claimed Meng's arrest proved “the U.S. is trying to do whatever it can to contain Huawei’s expansion in the world simply because the company is the point man for China’s competitive technology comp anies”. It said it was an example of the U.S.'s “determined Cold War mentality” toward China and relations between the two countries would sufferas a result.32. Which is the correct information according to the passage?A. Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver on Dec.1 by U.S. government.B. If Meng Wanzhou was found guilty of fraud, she could be sentenced to 30 years in prison.C. Sen. Mark Warner thinks no China’s major companies are dependent on the Chinese government.D. News of Meng Wanzhou’s arrest has something to do with a trade war truce.33. The underlined words “despicable rogue” means _________.A. a person who is cautious.B. a person who is impolite.C. a person who is considerate.D. a person who is mean.34. The nationality of Sen. Mark Warner may be __________.A. CanadianB. IranianC. AmericanD. Chinese35. Which could be the main idea of the passage?A. Huawei’s chief financial officer was arrested in Canada, facing possibleextradition to United States.B. Why was Huawei’s chief financial officer arrested?C. Chinese government strongly protests against the arrest of Huawei’s chief financial officer.D.
