Some scholars have thought of Gatzby’s tragic life to reveal the decline and deterioration of the "American dream" (王慧丽, 2008: 96). Some scholars regard The Great Gatsby as the fable story of American society in the 1920s. Gatsby's dream is the embodiment and representative of the "American dream". Gatsby's death is the result of the serious opposition and clash between materialism and idealism, which symbolizes the bursting of the "American dream" (范登伟, 2006:1). 2.2 意义：“美国梦”是美国文学作品中一个反复出现的主题，即每个人都可以通过自己的努力达到成功。
美国梦作为美国文学中永恒的主题，始终贯穿于美国文学中，菲茨杰拉德所处的时代正是美国社会最为纵乐绚丽的时代上层社会贪图享乐，而美国梦也在此刻变得虚幻。

ConclusionAbstractF. Scott Fitzgerald is recognized as a spokesman for the“jazz age” in the 1920 s. The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 which is universally recognized as Fitzgerald’s best novel. In a long time, it is considered to be the best endorsement of “blatant 20 s” it sketched the era characteristic of extremely delicate and even can become the special historical encyclopedia. The Great Gatsby was describes the story of a man named Gatsby. He wants to find his first lover Daisy, and rebuild their ideal love. After he made a windfall on trafficking, he began his “plan” -- to buy back Daisy's love. He fondly thought that as long as he has money he can do what he wants, such as to redeem the lost love. However, he was wrong. Because Daisy, the woman he loved, has became the corrupt things of modern society. In pursuit of Daisy, Gatsby ran out his love and talents and finally kill off his life. His dream is disillusioned thoroughly. This paper is basis on origin and connotation of the American dream. First of all, I’ll analyze the main characters’ different American dream and their disillusionment in The Great Gatsby. Secondly, I’ll give an analysisof the Chinese society ethos and t he change of people’s value since the reform and open policy. Then have a comparison with the American dream. 研究步骤：
1.查阅相关资料，了解小说的创作背景和具体内容
2.在阅读大量相关资料的基础上总结出对于作品艺术特色的论述
作者并没有把主题直接暴露给读者，而是巧妙运用象征手法将小说主题呈现给读者，对深化小说主题起到了至关重要的作用。象征主义是通过利用事物中潜藏的象征意义，强调运用有质感的表象来揭示其微妙的内部世界，从而把两个世界联系起来的一种创作手法。在这部优秀的小说中，人物象征主义的成功运用无疑是其一大特色，在深化小说主题方面发挥至关重要作用。

二、已了解的本课题国外研究现状
美国从诞生到现在两百多年的时间，但却产生了大量的著作，这些著作对世界艺术产生了深远的影响。在这些著作中，美国梦是当今社会科学研究的热点。但是这些作品大部分都停留在研究美国的社会生活，社会问题层面上，没有人能全面的研究美国梦的从始至今。王宏丹《<了不起的盖茨>的精神生态解读》,2010；刘邱《论<了不起的盖茨比>中黛西的塑造》,2010；陈明真《解构视野下的<了不起的盖茨比>》，2009；刘丽《对<了不起的盖茨比>的叙事分析》,2008；孟庆娟《色彩和时间的背后——论<了不起的盖茨比>中的象征意义》，2007；罗晓燕《从女性主义视角解读<了不起的盖茨比>》，2006；甘园园《<了不起的盖茨比>的文体学研究》，2006；郭华《寻找失去的乐园：对<了不起的盖茨比>的原型阐释》，2004。目前国内外许多的学术研究者对小说《了不起的盖茨比》的研究已经很深入，本文拟以意象的象征意义等来探讨象征手法在了不起的盖茨比中的运用。
通过对于美国文学经典之作菲茨杰拉德的《了不起的盖茨比》的象征手法的分析与研究，在深刻领略了作者卓越纯熟而又独特的写作技巧的同时解析了作品所呈现的丰韵的艺术特色，同时了解到爵士时代这样一个特殊的年代里面的人性百态，其中人们所表现出来的心理特征与性格特征对都具有着一定的现实意义。通过对美国梦的破碎的现实意义的研究对中国梦的发展与实现有一定的借鉴意义。
本文以象征主义文学批评理论为背景，分析小说中主人公盖茨比的象征主义意义。在盖茨比丰富传奇的一生中，我们看到了作者菲茨杰拉德自身的影子：幼年贫困，在亲戚资助下读完大学，经过个人奋斗出人头地。但菲茨杰拉德并没有局限于描写个人经历，他赋予盖茨比一种社会意义，而盖茨比所象征和代表的正是“个人奋斗”式美国梦的实现与幻灭，是一部社会的画卷，一部真实社会的写照。

无论在思想深度还是在艺术表现力度上，《了不起的盖茨比》都是绝对的经典之作。国内外的学者大多针对作品所显现的主题——“美国梦”的破灭来剖析作品，鲜有学者针对作品彰显的艺术特色进行研究。在解析作者精湛的写作技巧的同时，了解到那个特殊的年代里年轻人的追求与梦想，主人公盖茨比的经历就是当时社会的真实写照。
象征是一种艺术手法，它与构思相关，属写作构思技巧，而不只是语言加工问题。象征一般都用来表现某种抽象的概念或思想感情。也就是说，它是通过某一具体形象表现出一种更为深远的含意，让读者自己去意会。这是一种隐晦、含蓄而又能使读者产生愉悦的美感的艺术手法。《了不起的盖茨比》共九章，“绿灯”的意象曾三次出现，分别在第一、第五及第九章中，也就是小说的开头、中间和结尾处，也就说，“绿灯”是贯穿整个文本的一个重要象征，盖茨比的命运始终和这盏绿灯紧密相连。
三、本课题的研究内容
文章主要对小说文本进行分析，分析编织在象征意象中的“美国梦”。本文主要从两个方面加以论证：编织在具体的象征意象的“美国梦”和编织在人物塑造的美国梦。小说中对灯光和色彩的描绘很突出，绿、黄、白、蓝等颜色均有不同的象征意义，包括汽车，宴会、飞蛾、广告牌等小说中常见的意象都不是简单地重复，也都包含丰富的暗示与内涵。盖茨比、黛西、尼克这三人分别是故事的男女主角和叙述者，他们都在不同程度上经历了梦想幻灭的过程，从而更深刻地体现了小说所要反映的主题：“美国梦”的破灭。
本文主要着眼于研究作者通过对物品，颜色，地点的象征主义手法，揭露了作者对于当时美国虚假繁荣的社会现实的强烈的不满。作品中的场景选择符合历史社会背景，对人物的内在性格也起到衬托和揭示的作用。美国早起文化起源于东部殖民。随着西部的开发的推进，西部呈现出激情与活力，富有强烈的进取精神。东部与西部代表了传统与现代，保守与创新的两种价值观念的矛盾与冲突。作者还描写了烟雾弥漫、毫无生机的灰谷，它象征着一站后美国经济空前繁荣的背景下，人们价值观念发生了剧烈的扭曲，人们精神世界的极度空虚、迷茫和绝望。当尼克第一次踏上灰谷的土地时,是美国国庆日之前,象征着作者对于这个国家这种制度更深层次的思考,预示着盖茨比的命运不仅仅只是他个人的悲剧,更是那个时代与社会的悲剧。
