Rowling’s Lecture at HarvardLooking back at the 21-year-old that I was at graduation, is a slightly uncomfortable experience for the 42-year-old that she has become. Half my lifetime ago, I was striking an uneasy balance between the ambition I had for myself, and what those closest to me expected of me.I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk(怪癖) that would never pay a mortgage(按揭), or secure a pension. So they hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English Literature. A compromise was reached that satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parents’ car rounded the corner at the end of the road than I threw away German and scuttled off down the Classics corridor.I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for guiding you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticize my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have since been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. Poverty involves fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticized only by fools. What I feared most for myself at your age was not poverty, but failure. At your age, in spite of a distinct lack of motivation at university, where I had spent far too long in the coffee bar writing stories, and far too little time at lectures, I had a knack(诀窍) for passing examinations, and that, for years, had been the measure of success in my life and that of my peers.I am not dull enough to suppose that because you are young, gifted and well-educated, you have never known hardship or heartbreak. Talent and intelligence never yet protected anyone against the caprice (多变) of the fate, and I do not for a moment suppose that everyone here has enjoyed an existence of unruffled privilege and contentment.Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what makes up failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. So I think it fair to say that by any conventional measure, a mere seven years after my graduationday, I had failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. The fears that my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew. Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. I had no idea then how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality. So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life. You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.Failure gave me an inner security (安全) that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected; I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above the price of rubies. The knowledge that you have come out wiser and stronger of setbacks means that you are, ever after, confident in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by failure. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more than any qualification I ever earned. So given a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. Your qualifications, your CV(简历), are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its ups and downs.1.Work out the format of the passage.Para ________ povertyPara ________ failurePara ________ attitude towards failurePara________ the truth of life(1)What difficulties did have on her way to success?(2)How does she view failure?4.Discuss in groups.(1)How do you view failure? What can we learn from the。

But this meaning does not tell us very much. Unlike the other disciplines, philosophy cannot be defined by what you study, because it is actually unlimited. Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy: art, history, law, language, literature, mathematics, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate(博士学位)of Philosophy (Ph. D. ) in biochemistry, orcomputer science, or psychology. Two broad sub-fields of philosophy are logic and the history of philosophy. Logic is the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning. The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and periods in the development of philosophy.Of what use is philosophy? First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines. Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline, and its relation to other disciplines. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field. There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems, to communicate, to organize ideas and issues, to persuade, and to take what is the most important from a large quantity of data. These general uses are of great benefit in the career field, not necessarily for obtaining one’s first job after graduation, but for preparing for positions of responsibility, management and leadership later on. It is very short-sighted after all, to take a course of studies only for the purpose of getting one’s f irst job. The useful skills developed through the study of philosophy have significant long-term benefits in career advancement. No other discipline systematically follows the ideals of wisdom, leadership, and capacity to resolve human conflict.16. According to the first paragraph, philosophy canbest be described as the study of ______.A. social sciencesB. natural sciencesC. both social and natural sciencesD. the subject matter of politics17. What does the underlined word “discipline”mean in the first paragraph?A. Subject.B. Science.C. Literature.D. Occupation.18. With the study of philosophy, you can ______.A. become a great leaderB. succeed in everythingC. find a good job soon after graduationD. make progress in your career development19. According to the passage, which of the followingstatements is TRUE?A. Philosophy is an independent discipline.B. Logic helps you to become a better thinker.C. The study of philosophy brings youimmediate benefits.D. The meaning of philosophy is too limited todefine.20. From the passage, we can conclude______.A. not all the subjects have to do withphilosophyB. a person will get a Ph. D. if he/she studiesphilosophyC. philosophy can be helpful for the study of anyother subjectsD. philosophy is the only solution to all theproblems in the worldBWelcome to my message board!Subject: Slimming down classics?Mr Handsome2007-5-126:34 AM Orion Books, which decides there is a market in creating cut-down classics (经典著作), is slimming down some novels by such great writers as L. Tolstoy, M. Mitchell and C. Bronte. Now, each of them has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 pages percent of original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and, in a few cases, chapters removed. The first six shortened editions, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads “in half the time”, will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions.Mr Edwards2007-5-129:40 AM Well, I’m the publisher of Orion Group. Thanks for your attention. Mr Handsome.I must say, the idea developed from a game of “shame” in my office. Each of us was required to confess (承认)to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading. I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind several times. One of mycolleagues acknowledged skipping (跳读)Jane Eyre. We realized that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones.As a leading publishing house, we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but it’s not as if we’re withdrawing the o riginal versions. They are still there if you want to read them.Ms Weir2007-5-1211: 35 AM I’m the director of the online book club www. Mr Edwards, I think your shortened edition is a breath of fresh air. I’m guilty of never having re ad Anna Karenina, because it’s just so long. I’d much rather read two 300-page books than one 600-page book. I am looking forward to more shortened classics!Mr Crockatt2007-5-124: 38 PM I’m from the London independent bookshop Corckatt & Powell. In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics? I’m afraid reading some of these books is hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a reader. If people don’t have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don’t read a shortened version and kid yourself it’s the real thing.21. According to the message board, Orion Books_________.A. opposes the reading of original classicsB. is embarrassed for cutting down classicsC. thinks cut-down classics have a bright futureD. is cautious in its decision to cut down classics22. In Mr Edwards’ opinion, Orion Group isshortening classics to_________.A. make them easier to readB. meet a large demand in the marketC. increase the sales of literary booksD. compete with their original versions23. By describing the shortened classics as “a breathof fresh air”, Ms Weir_________.A. speaks highly of the cut-down classicsB. shows her love for original classicsC. feels guilty of not reading the classicsD. disapproves of shortening the classics24. Mr Crockatt seems to imply that _________.A. reading the classic works is a confusingattemptB. shortening the classics does harm to theoriginalC. publishing the cut-down classics is a difficultjobD. editing the classic works satisfies children’sneeds25. How many classics are involved in the massageboard?A. Two.B. Three.C. Four.D. Five.答案与解析1. D 句意:如果你是一个做事犹豫不决的人,那么你很有可能实现不了你的目标。

But does heavy use of cellphones pose a risk of cancer? This question has caused controversy for many years. A new study in rats now augments those concerns. Its data linked longterm, intense exposure to radiation fromcellphones with an increased risk of cancer in the heart or brain. The results have yet to be confirmed, the authors note.Indeed, although the rat study found a link between cellphone radiation and cancer, it offers no clues to why such a link might exist, notes Jonathan Samet. He teaches preventative medicine and directs the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Still, he calls the new study’s findings“significant”.They could lead to studies researching how cellphone radiation might cause cancer, he says.Phone signals are relayed between cell towers and cellphones via radio waves. This radio frequency—or RF—radiation is a type known as nonionizing(非电离的). Unlike Xrays, nonionizing radiation does not deposit enough energy into cells to release electrons from atoms or molecules, producing ions. So it tends to be far less harmful than ionizing radiation, such as Xrays. But that does not mean radio waves might not cause harm.In very large doses(量) this radiation will heat the body and cause tissue damage. But it’s not yet known what much lower RF levels might do, such as those from cellphone use. Five years ago, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, concluded that cellphone use “is possibly carcinogenic(致癌的)”.Its conclusion was based on what little research data was available at that time. But notice that IARC was not certain. It said only that phone use might ‘possibly’ cause cancer. So scientists at the National Toxicology Program, or NTP, investigated further.24.Which of the following can replace the underlined word“augments”?A.figures out B.puts outC.refers to D.adds to25.In which aspect does Jonathan Samet think the new study in rats is significant?A.It assists him with his teaching.B.It indicates a new research direction.C.It warns people to mind cellphone safety.D.It makes a breakthrough in cancer research.26.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.How phone signals are delivered.B.How cellphones produce radiation.C.Features of radiation from cellphones.D.Differences between ionizing and nonionizing radiation.27.What might be the theme of NTP scientists’ further research?A.Why cellphone use causes cancer.B.Whether cellphone use really causes cancer.C.What health effects cellphone use has.D.How much exposure to cellphone radiation is safe.CWhen I decided to write the story of my early years growing up in poverty, many of my friends and family members were shocked. They were more interested in my story of success, such as how I was able to create the nation's largest law firm and sell it to a bank.“How does one sell a law firm for millions of dollars?”That's the story everyone wanted me to write, but it's not the story I wanted to tell.Looking back, I see so clearly how often, throughout my boyhood,I was touched by the acts of kindness that helped shape me into the man I am today. And the acts of violence and ignorance played just a powerful role in making me who I am. Becoming a successful lawyer involves hard work, but escaping generational poverty is the hardest thing I have ever done. I chose to write the story of my childhood years in poverty, with the hope that a child somewhere in the world will read my story and be inspired to break the cycle of poverty. My publisher was quick to point out that the market would be small for a memoir (回忆录) written by an unknown author. To everyone's surprise, the book received over 1,000 prepublication orders one month before the scheduled launch date (发行日).The book launch scheduled for October 1,2009,was moved up to September 14,2009.Less than four months later, the first print run of 5,000 hardbound copies (精装版) were sold out.Today, the memoir is being used by universities, high schools and middle schools,as a case study of the behavioral example of the culture of poverty as well as valuable lessons on how to succeed in life. Here are words from a president of a middle school in Texas on October 27,2010,who is using my memoir for students 5th through 8th grades:“We are halfway through your story. It is changing the lives of our students and the views of our teachers.”28.In the view of people around him, what the author chose to write is ________.A.original B.successfulC.attractive D.uninteresting29.In Paragraph 2,the author is mainly trying to show ________.A.why he chose to write about his early yearsB.how poor his family was when he was youngC.everyone should remember their childhoodD.he is always a hardworking man30.In the author's opinion, his book was written for ________.A.workers in law firms and banksB.children living in povertyC.students all over the worldD.his family members31.What do we know from the passage?A. As a lawyer, the author lived a poor life at one time.B.The author's story has led to many students' success.C.The author's book sold so well beyond the publisher's expectation.D.The author was amazed that he earned much money by selling his firm.DI receive many letters from children and can't answer them all —there wouldn't be time enough in a day. I'll try to answer some of the questions that are commonly asked.Where did I get the idea for Stuart Little and for Charlotte's Web?Well, many years ago, I went to bed one night in a railway sleeping car, and during the night I dreamed about a tiny boy who acted rather like a mouse. That's how the story of Stuart Little got started. As for Charlotte's Web,I like animals and my barn is a very pleasant place to be — at all hours. One day when I was on my way to feed the pig,I began feeling sorry for the pig because, like most pigs,he was going to die. This made me sad. So I started thinking of ways to save a pig's life. Three years after I started writing it,it was published. (I am not a fast worker,as you can see.)Sometimes I'm asked how old I was when I started to write, and what made me want to write.I started early — as soon as I could spell. Children often find pleasure through trying to set their thoughts down on paper, either in words or in pictures. I was not good at drawing,so I used words instead. As I grew older,I found that writing can be a way of earning a living.Well, here is the answer to the last question. No,they are imaginary tales. In real life,a family doesn't have a child who looks like a mouse and a spider doesn't spin words in her web.And although my stories are imaginary,I like to think that there is some truth in them, too — truth about the way people and animals feel, think and act.32.E.B.White wrote this passage to ________.A.introduce his new booksB.introduce two funny storiesC.explain why he enjoys writingD.answer some readers' questions33.We can know from the passage that E.B.White is a writer who ________.A.writes very fastB.works on a friend's farmC.mainly writes stories for adultsD.writes imaginary tales for children34.E.B.White started to write because he wanted to ________.A.improve his spellingB.express his thoughtsC.show his sadnessD.make a good living35.What is probably the last question?A.Are your stories true?B.What is the truth in your stories?C.Will you write more imaginary tales?D.Do you know a child looking like a mouse?第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

These changes were clear and criticized by some people on both sides of the Atlantic. However, after the Revolution, Americans began to be proud of their own form of English. Noah Webster was the major early supporter of American meanings and spellings over British ones and published the earliest American dictionary, An American Dictionary of the English Language. During the years since Webster, language differences have continued to develop, proving the truth of GeorgeBernard Shaw’s often-repeated words that the two nations are “divided by a common language”.Like the American language, the earliest American literature copied English models. However, after the Revolution and the War of 1812, writers began to create a clear American literature. However, in 1820, Sydney Smith asked the famous question “Who reads an American book?”Answering to this and similar taunts (讽刺)with creative anger, American writers soon produced works that plenty of British people read. Works by Washington Irving, Walt Whitman, and Mark Twain had been highly acclaimed greatly in Britain by the end of the nineteenth century.Even as American writers gained respect in Britain, British writers continued to have great influence in America. Charles Dickens went to America twice, in 1842 and 1867-1868. Other major British writers who travelled and lived in the United States include D.H. Lawrence and Aldous Huxley. British best works continued to be widely read. The works of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen became popular films. At the turn of the twenty-first century, many books and writers continue to cross the Atlantic in both directions —made possible by the proud heritage (继承)of the shared language.16. The author of this passage seems to think ______.A. British English is better than American EnglishB. Perhaps, it is not a new idea to tell people that they can actually produce the great work through combining the painting and poems. In this case, we can unite both things in two ways. The first thing is to make poems as the main inspiration to do paintings. It is also possible to write a poem after looking at the painting. That will be the great first recommended way people can look at. What about the next idea to combine painting and poetry? In this case, we can combine both of them on the canvas. You can do a good painting on the canvas and then write down the poem on that painting. It is a unique artwork and will be a good example to be looked at. I do not know whether this kind of concept has been used before. But this is the quite great new idea for me. It will make people love painting and poetry at once. You will not need to read the poem on the white plain paper anymore. A poem is a good work to represent a story or a thought. It is not too long and complicated. It
