While I can't say that I know everything about architecture, I no longer have much to prove or discover. For me , painting is just as important , creatively , but it's something you do alone in your workshop , with a piece of paper and a pot of ink — it's totally refreshing. Why did you wait so many years to start painting? It was a kind of need. I was tired off in my field and wanted to try something new and I tried to improve this situation by writing. But writing is a very long process ——it takes at least a year to write a book. Painting is faster. Being alone with yourself during the day , in the light , and then putting yourself in a situation where you produce something of which you know nothing and for which no one has asked— it's a kind of freedom you seldom have in life. What is your project in China right now? There's a project in the Zhuhai Macao area. The Chinese engineering and building company Zhuhai Da Heng Qin asked French architect Thomas Coldefy to think about the project , suggesting that he work with an architect who's already known in China. His challenges.C. His worries.D. His habits.CAfter the holiday season , our guess is that you are tired from visiting the store and buying gifts. It is easy to get stuck, both spiritually and physically by having too much. This is why minimalism and living simply should be your resolution for 2021.Economic development results in a lot of consumerism〔消费〕:get a good job, get a nice car, and settle into a beautiful house. But some people say that our lives could use a little lightening these days:We work and workand work to only buy and buy and buy — but does all that material wealth really lead to our happiness? Are we filling our time with unnecessary things , when we should be filling our time with friends , value, and service? An article from the website , Becoming Minimalist , points out the problem with this cycle〔循环〕 in the best way, 'Nobody really believes happiness is directly tied to the number of things we own.Yet almost all of us live like it. We get stuck in it. We work more hours than ever before , earn more income, but save less.〞Minimalism isn't all about ridding〔摆脱〕consumerism and products from your life. Minimalism is about finding your own sense of self and focusing on the things you love. It is about creating a lifestyle that is focused on only those people and things that enrich you. These days, minimalistic living can come in many forms. We think the most practical form of minimalistic living for us is to follow our list:How You Can Live Lighter in 2021.Purge Your Closet:Take a day and clear out all of your drawers and closets. If something doesn't have special meaning or adds no value to your life ——give it away. Have only what you need and what you can see.Test Those Limits:See how long you can go without shopping. Give yourself a limit , whether it be two weeks or six months , whether it be avoiding a certain mall or buying clothes. Then put your self will to the test. After your allowed time , chances are you will realize all those extra blouses weren't worth it and you will set yourself up for future spending control.Cut the Cord:This sometimes means giving up your modern technology:TV , cell phone , computer, etc. Limit yourself to only a few hours of TV per week , or only 30 minutes of social media per day. You'll make more time for the things and people that you love and clear out some unnecessary noise from your life.Live to Your Goals:Find out what your life goals and values are. Then , see what may help you or stop you from achieving this goal. Cut out that which doesn't lead to your happiness and success and add more of what does. To practise minimalistic living , you shouldA. give away your drawers and closetsB. go to the shopping mall every six monthsC. have 30 minutes of social media per dayD. discover your life goals and values29. The words “ pared down " in the last paragraph probabl y mean . 〞A. freeB. lightC. popularD. convenient30. Which of the following best explains the writer's opinion?A. It might take you a long time to wait for the “ right “ thing.B. Clear out the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.C. Change yourself with the development of society.D. Freedom is more important than success.DA research study has looked into what happens inside your brain while you read and listen to music. You know that thrill〔兴奋〕you get when listening to your favorite music? That exciting feeling when you hear your favorite songs?According to a recent study , it seems the same thing can happen while you are reading , but not with every kind of text. This opens up interesting questions around how music, reading and emotions are connected in the brain. The study“ We decided we woulddo a comparison between four or five different kinds of texts to see how the brain reacted, “ explains Adam Zeman a scientist. " The participants 者〕lay in an MRI scanner reading the texts, and then we compared brai n activity for those five texts. xts ranged “ The te 〔涉及〕from deadly boring ones to highly exciting ones , including the Highway Code , parts from novels, and poems. So what happened in the participants brains while they were reading? Emotional reactionAs the researchers observed, participants found some texts more emotional than others. When reading these emotional texts, there was higher activity in brain areas related to pleasure and reward—the same areas related to the thrill we get when we listen to music. As Zeman says , “ it perfectly shows that the emotional reaction to literature〔文学〕and to music has quite a bit in common. So it doesn't seem to matter whether you are listening or reading if you get a thrill. That was one quite strong finding. 〞Introspection〔内省〕There were more interesting findings. Reading poetry is often considered an activity that requires us to use the brain, but did the study find any truth of this? When the participants were reading poems, the team found there was more activity in a particular group of brain areas called the Default Network. " These areas seem to be related to things we do with our minds when we are resting, like thinking about what's happened to us recently , thinking about what's going to happen in the near future, about other people, and that network seems to be more strongly related to poetry than with other texts , “ explains Zeman. This connection between poetry and introspection could be the subject of further research. ConclusionsThe study shows that the different texts activate different areas of our brains when we read. Zeman says, “ the study did support what we thought:reaction to literature was going to be a bit like the one to music in terms of emotion. We felt that we ended up with a great deal of unanswered questions which we hope somebody will conti nue to ask. 〞31. What did the research try to find out?A. How music helps us read different kinds of texts.B. What kind of texts most people like while listening to music.C. Why reading different texts causes different reactions in emotion.D. Whether reading can cause similar emotional reaction like music does. 32. What did the participants do inthe study?A. They listened to music.B. They read different texts.C. They answered many questions.D. They compared brain activities. 33. What can we learn from the study?A. The emotional texts work better for the research.B. Poetry reading can activate the Default Network.C. Music helps to bring pleasure and reward.D. People think about the past when resting.四?阅读短文,根据短文内容答复以下问题?〔共10分,每题2分〕Mom's Recipe for LifeI have a lot of Mom's recipes in a blue box where all my special ones were put , like the pumpkin pie she made during my growing up years. Each year, the honor is given to an inventor who has made a big difference in the lives of people in developing countries. Gadgil is a professor and physicist at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent thirty years helping people in need. His inventions have help ed more than 100 million people around the world. ―I chose to focus on problems where my knowledge of science could help,‖ Gadgil said.In the 1990s, Gadgil designed his first life-saving invention after more than 10,000 people died from Bengal cholera (孟加拉霍乱) because of the clean water crisis (危机) in India. His invention uses ultraviolet light to kill deadly disease-carrying germs (细菌) from drinking water. It costs just one cent to clean five liters of water (about 21 cups). So far, the invention has provided safe drinking water for more than five million people in India and other developing countries.Gadgil’s another important invention is the Berkeley-Darfur Stove (炉具). The long and violent war in Darfur, Sudan, has caused many people to move to foreign countries and live in refugee camps (难民营). They are given food aid. But people still have to travel a long distance five times a week to gather firewood to cook meals. This can be dangerous because of street violence in the area. To avoid danger, some spend much of their money used to feed their families buying firewood. The stove Gadgil created cuts fuel usage by 55%. That means people wouldn’t have to leave the camps to find firewood as often. The invention also helps to save homes more than $300 a year. About 125,000 people and their families have been helped. As a professor, Gadgil encourages his students, ―Be optimistic (乐观的) when you try a hard problem,‖ he says. ―It’s when you solve a large problem that you can have a big influence on the world.‖54. Which of the following statements about Gadgil is TRUE?A. He helped about 125,000 people in India.B. He spent lots of money on his inventions.C. He used his knowledge to help people in need.D. One of his inventions could cure Bengal cholera.56. What do people benefit from the Berkeley-Darfur Stove?A. They can sell stoves to make a living.B. They can save both time and money.C. They can be protected from diseases.D. They can cook their food easily.DThe art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let go. For life is a paradox (自相矛盾): it orders us to hold tightly to its many gifts even while it forces us to give up everything at last. As an old saying goes, ―A man comes i nto this world with his fist clenched (握紧拳头), but when he dies, his hand is open.‖Surely we ought to hold fast to life, for it is wonderful, and full of beauty. We know that this is so, but all too often we recognize this truth too late. We remember what it was and then suddenly realize that it is no more.We remember a beauty or a love that disappeared. But we remember with far greater pain that we did not see that beauty when it flowered and that we failed to react with love when it was gentle.A recent experience re-taught me this truth. I was hospitalized following a serious heart attack and had been in intensive care (特别护理) for several days. It was not a pleasant place. One morning, I had to have some additional tests. The required machines were located in a building at the opposite end of the hospital, so I had to be wheeled across the courtyard. As we got out from our unit, the sunlight hit me. That’s all there was to my experience, just the light of the sun. And yet how beautiful it was — how warming, how sparking, how brilliant! I looked to see whether anyone else was enjoying the sun’s golden glow, but everyone was hurrying to and fro, most with eyes fixed on the ground. Then I remembered how often I, too, had been indifferent to the beauty of each day, too busy with something unimportant. Life’s gifts are valuable — but we are too careless of them. So, we should never be too busy for the wonder and awe of life. We should hold fast to life, but also learn to let go. This is th e second side of life’s coin, the opposite pole of its paradox. We must accept our losses, and learn how to let go. This is not an easy lesson to learn, especially when we are young and think that the world belongs to us, that whatever we want can or will be ours if we work with full force. But then reality finally hits us, and slowly but surely this truth comes to us.57. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?A. Life seems strange with opposite ideas.B. Life teaches us to hold tight to our life.C. Life is a box of chocolates with secrets.D. Life is mainly about birth and death.58. The writer may agree that _______.A. wise people can easily realize what they lost in timeB. people in sickness usually understand life much betterC. it does us harm to think about what happened in the pastD. we must accept our losses and then move onto a new life59. The writer uses the example in Paragraph 4-6 in order to _______.A. explained the importance of keeping healthyB. tell a meaningful story about his life in the hospitalC. show his regret about not enjoying the sunshine in the pastD. prove people fail to enjoy something small but valuable七、阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的五个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
