The Western has been the favorite type for American adventure story since the nineteenth century. While the American West was being settled, newspapers and "dime novels" could depend on stories of the frontier settlements and tell tales about living in the untamed wilderness to sell. The public back East was eager to read about the West, even if the stories were more fiction than fact. In 1902, Owen Wister published his novel The Virginian, which was one of the first novels to treat the Western as a serious literary form; the novel still sold well and had inspired several movies and a television series. In 1905, Bertha H. Bower and Zane Grey published their first novels, and the popular Western novels had continued to flourish from that day on, with current novels by Luke Short, Max Brand, and Louis L’ Amour carrying on the tradition. The first Western movie appeared even earlier than these serious Western novels. Before the turn of t he century, an associate of Edison’s had filmed Cripple Creek Barroom Scene, a few seconds of film showing the inside of a saloon, to help publicize the invention of the movie camera. In 1903 the Edison’ company filmed the first "full-length" Western — The Great Train Robbery. The film lasts less than fifteen minutes, but a story is told its entirety. In the movie, bandits (强盗) rob a train and its passengers, killing the engineer, and find themselves tracked down by a posse. Audiences loved the movie. Some theaters were actually opened for the single purpose of showing The Great Train Robbery and only later realized that they could do equally well showing other movies. The film was so successful that other companies, and finally even the Edison company itself, began producing copies and other versions of The Great Train Robbery. Ironically, in" an era when the West was still very real —-Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma were all territories rather than states in 1903 —The Great Train Robbery was filmed in New Jersey.1. The purpose of this passage is to________.A. discuss the making of the movie The Great Train RobberyB. discuss the early Western novelsC. discuss the art of movie makingD. trace the development of the Western as an American adventure story tradition2. Edison’s invention of the movie camera happened;by accidentB. movie houses didn’t make much-money in the early daysC. Easterners were fascinated by the " wild West"D. The Great Train Robbery was poorly received by the public because it lacked a plot4. As used in this passage, the word “literary” means________.A. humorousB. financialC. appropriate to literatureD. amateur【答案解析】1. D 推断题。

福建省福州市高考英语阅读理解、书面表达四月自练(8)阅读理解(原创)People in Hong Kong speak a rich mixture of languages. Hong Kong was a British colony for more than 156 years before it was returned to Chinese control in 1997.English was the only official language until 1994.Most pe ople in Hong Kong today speak Cantonese, but Mandarin andother diale cts also are heard, and English as the British used is stillwidely spoken and taught here. Now however, many people arechoosing to learn English as it is spoken in the United States.Victor Chan, for example, has children who attend school called NatureEQ on Saturday and Sunday, and they are learning to say words the American way. Mr Chan says he wants his sons to learn American English, because he plans to send them to the United States for further study.Nature EQ is one of a growing number of schools in Hong Kong that offer American English classes. Frankie Ng opened the school 17 years ago, at that time, he had only 40 students. Today, the school has 350 students, and it does not have space for any more.Mr Ng says American English is clear and defined. He says it is easy to teach and easily understood. That, however, is not the main concern of the children.Public schools in the former British colony still teach mostly British English. But the number of private language schools teaching American English is growing. In Hong Kong’s Tseung Kwan O district, for example, the American English Workshop school had 20 students a week when it opened one year ago. Today, ithas more than 180 each week. Some observers say American English is becoming the language of international business. Increased contact with American culture, like movies, television programs, computer games and the Internet is spreading American expressions and accents in areas other than business. But for now, people hearing Englis h in the streets of Hong Kong are mainly hearing traditional British English.“We can understand both, but for what we speak, we speak with the British accent, ”said one local woman.“The British is better I think, ”commented a local man.【文章大意】多元化的大都市香港现在正兴起一股学习美式英语的热潮。

When you do this you may feel a little,or large, release from the jail of your mind and you'll be on your way.48. (原创)“Did you come alone or with your parents? ”When Tsinghu a University’s new 2013 freshmen arrived on campus late last month, the first question they were faced with at the registrati on desk was the above. According to statistics, we know that more than half of the 539 students came alone. Chen Jining, president of , encouraged them to“start this new adventure by standing on your own two feet”. To help freshmen grow up, some universities have thought of new methods. At Tsinghua, for example, freshmen need to re gister and find their dormitory by themselves. The process req uires two to three hours, during which volunteers take parents on a tour of the campus. At , a banner hanging in the inform ation center says“Parents let go please; let us guide your children. ”“Often parents like to do things or make d ecisions for their children. In their eyes, children never grow u p, ”said Lu Guodong, dean(系主任)of undergraduate studies at Zhejiang University. “But at university, growing up is the goal for all students. Growing up is t he biggest success. In , students grow up too slowly as parent s are always in charge. Students never think about what path they should take and why, ”he said.Zhang Yanxue, a senior student studying Chinese language a nd literature at the Communication University of China, is pres ident of the Self-improvement Society. Although most students can finish the r egistration process by themselves, their parents usually prefer accompanying them to the university. “This is the third time I’ve welcomed freshmen and I didn’t see much change in that r egard, ”Zhang said. “The number of students who came alone is the same as in previous years. ”Sometimes, however, the distance between university and ho me is so great that many parents are too worried to let their c hildren travel alone. To reassure parents, Renmin University o f China introduced a new method. It asks senior students to re turn to their hometown and accompany freshmen back to the campus. This helps freshmen get used to living independently .“St udents should have an independent character and a dream . Learning how to use that independent character to achieve t heir dreams and finish tasks assigned by the country is very important, ”said President Chen.【文章大意】9月第一周, 各大高校已陆续进入开学季。

Even before my father left us, my mother had to go back to work to support our family. Once I came out of the kitchen, complaining, “Mom, I can’t peel potatoes. I have only one hand.”Mom never looked up from sewing. “You get yourself into that kitchen and peel those potatoes,” she told me. “And don’t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”In the second grade, our teacher lined up my class on the playground and had each of us race across the monkey bars, swinging from one high steel rod to the next. When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids behind me laughed, and I went home crying. That night I told Mom about it. She hugged me, and I saw her “we’ll see about that” look. The next afternoon, she took me back to school. At the deserted playground, Mom looked carefully at the bars.“Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised. An animal that is aware〔意识〕of itself has a highlevel of intelligence.Awareness can be tested by studying whether the animal recognizes itself in the mirror, that is, its own reflected image〔反射出的影像〕.Many animals fail this exercise bitterly, paying very little attention to the reflected image. Only humans, and some intelligent animals like apes and dolphins, have been shown to recognize that the image in the mirror is of themselves. Now another animal has joined the club. In the Proceedings of the National Academy ofSciences, researchers report that an Asian elephant has passed the mirror self-reflection test. "We thought that elephants were the next important animal," said Diana Reiss of the Wildlife Conservation Society, an author of the study with Joshua M. Plotnik and Fans B.M. de Waal of EmoryUniversity. With their large brains, Reiss said, elephants "seemed like cousins to apes anddolphins."The researchers tested Happy, Maxine and Patty, three elephants at the Bronx Zoo. They putan 8-foot-square mirror on a wall of the animals' play area (out of the sight of zoo visitors) andrecorded what happened with cameras, including one built in the mirror. The elephants used their long noses to find what was behind it, and to examine parts of theirbodies.Of the three, Happy then passed the test, in which a clear mark was painted on one side of herface. She could tell the mark was there by looking in the mirror, and she used the mirror to touchthe mark with her long nose.Diana Reiss said, "We knew elephants were intelligent, but now we can talk about theirintelligence in a better way."1. The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 per cent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 per cent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science. Scientists have changed the color of a dark-striped zebrafish(斑马鱼) to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment (色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebrafish skin color is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanin (黑色素). The number, size and darkness of melanin per pigment cell determine skin color. It appears that, like the golden zebrafish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation (变异) in the gene for melanin production. This results in less pigmented skin. However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebrafish genes. Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun (太阳光紫外线), which can cause skin cancer. But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D. So the related gene changes, according to Cheng. Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin color, said Cheng. The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin color without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson. 6. The passage mainly tells us that ________. A. people can not change their skin color without any pain B. the new discovery could lead to research into ways to change skin color safely C. pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin color as he liked D. scientists have found out that people’s skin color is determined by the gene
