Making the news李仕才一、阅读理解。
It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech —"I Have a Dream", you may notice that he stumbles (结巴)over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for awell-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly.Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human. As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.1.The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will .A.be smarter than youB. know what you are talking aboutC.do better than youD. notice your mistakes2.You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because .A. you find the way of speech-making more importantB. you don’t fully understand the speechC. you don’t know what the speaker plans to sayD. your attention is on the content3.From the last two paragraphs, the author means that .A. giving a speech is like giving a performanceB. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is madeC.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad。

Making the news李仕才一、阅读理解Taylore is a kid who passes by to ride sometimes and help us with chores. Barely 15, she’s never short of advice, and one of her favorite pastimes is teasing me about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.Last summer four of us rode down the trail behind our woods: my wife Karen, Taylore, Taylore’s friend Kendall and me. I was riding my 13-year-old, Tawny. We were two miles from home when, for some unexplainable reason, I pushed Tawny into a gallop(飞驰). The other horses were anxious to catch up, and just like that, the race was on.Taylore brushed past my left leg and, seconds later, Kendall went by on my right. I realized Tawny was covering ground faster than I’d ever seen her. She strained every muscle in her body to catch up with the girls. It was like a truck winding over a mountain road without brakes (闸). Part of me felt perfectly in control, while another part screamed that I wasn’t.In half a mile I knew we’d be crossing the highway, so I prayed that the girls would be fine. I gave up calculating how long it might take before my horse would be tried enough to want to slow down.I was just about out of answers when I saw the girls slowing in front of me. Their horses were relaxed and comfortable, not even breathing hard. Taylore’s face glowed. She gave me a high five. "Wow, you did well, "she said. "I knew you’d go fastwhen you were ready."No one in the group had even broken a sweat, except me. I was still nervous from the crazy pace. My heart pounded too, but not from exercise. Karen claims I was showing off for the girls that day, and maybe she’s right. But I think I had something to prove. Because despite my wrinkles (皱纹), glasses and gray hair, I was feeling young at heart. And, like a horse on a warm summer day, I’m always ready to kick up my heels.1. How did the race between the girls and the author begin?A. His horse’s gallop made the other horses want to catch up.B. He wanted to show off his riding skills for the girls.C. They wanted to know whose horse could run fastest.D. They teased him about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.2. During the race, ___________.A. the author’s horse outran the girl’s horses the whole timeB. the author was confident that Tawny was in controlC. the girls were so anxious to win that they sweated a lotD. the author’s good performance took Taylore by surprise3. When the race ended, the author’s heart pounded because ________.A. he was feeling thrilled and youngB. it was really tough exercise for himC. he was worried that the girls might be in dangerD. he felt quite embarrassed that he had lost the race4. The phrase "kick up my heels"at the end can be replaced by _________.A. devote myselfB. enjoy myselfC. accept my challengeD. take part in running competition【文章大意】文章描述作者和两个女孩骑马比赛,这让作者感到兴奋,也感到虽然自己上了年纪,但是有一颗年轻的心。

Unit 4 Making the news Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2015·江西省八所重点中学高三联考) Bobbi Kristina Brown's family has been gathered around her since she was hospitalized on Saturday after being found unconscious in the bathtub of her suburban Atlanta townhome. Whitney Houston's only child is now at Emory University Hospital and is still fighting for her life, as a family statement said on Monday. Nothing has changed, despite reports that are popping up and painting a more serious picture. Fox News reported Wednesday that the situation is horrific. “It's now a matter of when the family wants to let go and accept that she's pretty much not going to make it,” a source told FOX411. “They've left it up to the family as to how long they want to keep her alive.” People Magazine is also reporting that a doctor told Brown's family on Wednesday that nothing more could be done. “Everyone is coming to the hospital to say goodbye,” said a family member. And the Daily Mail says Brown has been taken off life support. But Bobby Brown issued a statement late Thursday denying these reports. “If we issued a statement every time the media published a false report regarding this matter, that's all we would be doing 24 hours a day. This is false, just as is the vast majority of the other reporting that is currently taking place,” he said, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. A source close to the family tells USA TODAY that it's wrong to say the family is gathering to say goodbye, because the family has been there since the beginning, so nothing is any different today for them. Also, Brown is “not brain dead,” as has been reported. And, as for other stories saying that the Houston family is feuding with Bobbi Kristina's dad, Bobby Brown? Those aren't true either. They “are NOT fighting,” says our source. 文章大意:本文主要讲Kristina病危,几家报社的报道都失真,一家人仍在祈祷出现奇迹。 1.According to Fox News, Bobbi Kristina is ________. A.within an inch of life B.on the way to success C.left aside by her family D.in a good state 答案: A 细节理解题。根据文章第四段可知选A。within an inch of life半死;on the way to success在成功的路上;left aside by her family被家人放在一边;in a good state状态良好。 2.Bobby Brown holds the opinion that ________. A.they are busy issuing statements all day B.the family is saying goodbye to Kristina C.he is getting along well with the Houston family D.most journalists are getting the wrong end of the stick. 答案:D 细节理解题。根据文章第七段But Bobby Brown issued a statement late Thursday denying these reports.可知Bobby Brown认为大部分记者报道失真。故选D。 3.Which can be the best title of the passage? A.An Accident In The Bathtub B.Kristina, We're Still Praying And Waiting On A Miracle C.False Reports From Different News Media D.Bobbi Kristina's Final Days 答案:B 主旨大意题。通读文章,并根据文章的最后一段可知全家人仍在等待奇迹的出现。可知B正确。 B (2015·石家庄一模) The Internet is full of headlines that grab your attention with buzzwords (流行术语). But often when we click through, we find the content hardly delivers and it wastes our time. We close the page, feeling we've been cheated. These types of headlines are called “click bait”. A headline on Business Insider reads: “This phrase will make you seem more polite”. First, when you click through, you find another headline: “Four words to seem more polite”. Then, on reading the article, you find it's actually an essay about sympathy. And what are the four words? They're “Wow, that sounds hard”. On some video websites, you might encounter headlines such as “Here's what happens when six puppies visited a campus”. It turns out that it's just some uneventful dog footage (连续镜头). Nowadays, with the popularity of social media, many news outlets tweet (推送) click bait links to their stories. These tweets take advantage of the curiosity gap or attempt to draw the reader into a story using a question in the headline. These click bait headlines are so annoying that someone is attempting to save people's time by exposing news outlet click bait through social media. The Twitter account @ SavedYouAClick, run by Jake Beckman, is one such example. Beckman's method is to grab tweets linking to a story and retweet them with a clicksaving comment. For example, CNET tweeted “So iOS 8 appears to be jailbreakable but...”, with a link to its coverage of Apple's product announcements. Beckman retweeted it with this comment attached: “... it hasn't been jailbroken yet.” Since founding the account, Beckman's Twitter experiment has brought him more than 131,000 followers. Beckman said, “@ SavedYouAClick is just my way of trying to help the Internet be less terrible.” Asked about his goal, he said, “I'd love to see publishers think about the experience of their readers first. I think there's an enormous opportunity for publishers to provide readers with informative updates that include links so you can click through and read more.” 文章大意:当今网络上充满了吸引人注意力的标题,但是往往存在“陷阱”,这对读者是一个欺骗,Jack Beckman呼吁出版商应该对读者负责。 4.The article on Business Insider turns out to be ________. A.useful suggestions on politeness B.an essay about another topic C.an article hard to understand D.a link to a video website 答案:B 细节理解题。根据第二段的第三句“Then, on reading the article, you find it's actually an essay about sympathy”可知,当你读文章时,你会发现它实际上是一篇关于同情心的散文,因此选择B。 5.Why are readers often cheated by tricky headlines? A.Social media has become more popular. B.Readers have questions to be solved. C.Such headlines are fairly attractive. D.There're always stories behind them.
