It was not until he set aside his past that he could even focus on the future. I have not filled up my schedule with classes I did not want because calculus and economics look good on a college transcript. Given our vast numbers of state universities and financial-aid programs, virtually anyone who meets entrance requirements for college can obtain an excellent college education and open up windows of opportunity in life.Another reason those opportunities will be open to educated young people from middle-class and poorer backgrounds is that hiring is more meritocratic today than ever before. In principle, at least, we have always been a society where all people are equal; yet in the past, children of the wealthy and the well connected could expect to obtain higher-status jobs and to receive better pay. But the laws and programs resulting from our civil-rights struggles have produced a modern business climate in which jobs are available on an equal-opportunity basis, and in which candidates have a legal right to be judged on the merit of their educational background and experience.In conclusion, education is probably the main factor in opening doors to success for young people in our society. The fact that education has supplanted money and property in this role is owing to a more egalitarian system of higher education, as well as to more merit-based hiring practices that generally value individual education over family fortune or connections.Does an emphasis on competition tend to improve or harm our society?Competition has definite benefits. It encourages people and organizations to try harder and do their best. That is why American society is largely organized around competitive battles. But a balance is needed. Companies fighting for sur- v ival may lower their prices, which is good for customers.But companies locked in competition also fire workers, which can hurt thousands of families. Sometimes managers feel driven to use unfair tactics, as when companies exploit employees by failing to pay overtime wages. Competition that is out of control can hurt average Americans.Politics is another field where competition has gotten out of hand. At one time, competition in politics took place only 14 during elections. Now it is constant. Politicians call one another names, accuse one another of crimes, and run ads attacking each other. The high cost of campaign ads makes it hard for candidates who aren’ t rich to be elected. No wonder many Americans say they have come to hate politics.Now competition has even come to the T V screen. Today’s most popular shows are “reality” shows where people lie, cheat, and hurt each other. What kind of lesson about life does this send to young kids who may be watching?We will never do away with all competition and we should not try to. Seeing his daughter’s distress, Mr. Gradgrind realized that his one option of raising his children was wrong. In contrast to Louisa, the two younger Gradgrind children grew up with several ways of thinking under the guidance of Sissy Jupe, and as a result, they became more happy and more balanced than Louisa, who grew up with only 1 way of thinking.As proven by Gatsby’s fate and Louisa’s situation, having one option is not the best.
