When the studio didn’t want me for the film - it wanted somebody as well known as Paul - he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺)and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other - but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core(核心)of our relationship off the screen. We shared the brief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back - he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Pa ul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.I last saw him a few months ago. The vehicle-named the Transition – has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and bums 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279,000.And it won’t help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.Mann said Terrafu gia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision five yearsago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those pilots of larger planes Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?A. The basic data of the Transition.B. The advantages of flying cars.C. The potential market for flying cars. C. The designers of the Transition.29. Why is the Transition unlikely to show up in too many driveways?A. It causes traffic jams.B. It is difficult to operate.C. It is very expensive.D. It bums too much fuel.30. What is the government’s attitude to the development of the flying car?A. CautiousB. Favorable.C. Ambiguous.D. Disapproving.31. What is the best title for the text?A. Flying Car at Auto ShowB. The Transition’s Fist FlightC.Pilots’ Dream Coming TrueD. Flying Car Closer to RealityDWhen a leafy plant is under attack ,it doesn’t sit quietly. Back in 1983,two scientists,Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, VOCs for short.Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked .It’s a plant’s way of crying out.But is anyone listening?Apparently.Because we can watch the neighbors react. Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty .They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers.Once they arrive, the tables are turned .The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch. In study after study,it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors .The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors ,relatively speaking ,stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do.Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don’t know. Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happ ened to “overhear” the cry. So information was exchanged, but it wasn’t a true, intentional back and forth.Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are w eak. There’s a whole lot going on.32. What does a plant do when it is under attack?A. It makes noises.B. It gets help from other plants.C. It stands quietlyD. It sends out certain chemicals.33. What does the author mean by “the tables are turned” in paragraph 3?A. The attackers get attacked.B. The insects gather under the table.C. The plants get ready to fight back.D. The perfumes attract natural enemies.34.Scientists find from their studies that plants can .A.predict natural disastersB.protect themselves against insectsC.talk to one another intentionallyD.help their neighbors when necessary35.what can we infer from the last paragraph?A.The word is changing faster than ever.B.People have stronger senses than beforeC.The world is more complex than it seemsD.People in Darwin’s time were more imaginative.

Department of Labor statistics (统计) show that there is an oversupplyof college-trained workers and that this oversupply is increasing. Already therehave been more than enough teachers, engineers, physicists, aerospace experts, andother specialists. Yet colleges and graduate schools continue every year to turnout highly trained people to compete for jobs that aren't there. The result is thatgraduates cannot enter the professions for which they were trained and must taketemporary jobs which do not require a college degree. On the other hand, there is a great need for skilled workers of all sorts:carpenters, electricians, mechanics, plumbers, TV repairmen. These people have more work than they can deal with, and their annual incomes areoften higher than those of college graduates. The old gap that white-collar workersmake a better living than blue-collar workers no longer holds true. The law of supplyand demand now favors the skilled workmen. The reason for this situation is the traditional myth that college degree is apassport to a prosperous future. A large part of Americansociety matches successin life equally with a college degree. Parents begin indoctrinating (灌输) theirchildren with this myth before they are out of grade school. High school teachersplay their part by acting as if high school education were a preparation for collegerather than for life. Under this pressure the kids fall in line. Whether they wantto go to college or not doesn't matter. Everybody should go to college, so of coursethey must go. And every year college enrollments (入学) go up and up, and more andmore graduates are overeducated for the kinds of jobs available to them. One result of this emphasis on a college education is that many people go tocollege who do not belong there. Of the sixty percent of high school graduates whoenter college, half of them do not graduate with their class. Many of them drop outwithin the first year. Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up.1. It's implied but not stated in the passage that________.A.many other countries are facing the same problemB.white-collar workers in the US used to make more money than blue-collar workersC.fewer students will prefer to go to college in the futureD.the law of supply and demand has a strong effect on American higher education2. Which of the following is NOT a reason why college enrollments go up every year?A. Many people believe that the only way to success is a college education.B. Many parents want their children to go to college.C. High school teachers urge their students to go to college.D. Every young man and woman wants to go to college.3.By saying that“many people go to college who do not belong there〞, the author means that ________ .A. many people who are not fit for college education go to collegeB. many people who do not have enough money go to collegeC. many people who go to college drop out within the first yearD. many people who go to college have their hopes destroyed4. We can infer from the passage that the author believes that _______ .A. every young man and woman should go to collegeB. college education is a bad thingC. people with a college education should receive higher payD. fewer people should go to college while more should be trained for skilled jobsBSelf-confidence is an attitude which allows individuals to have positive yet realistic views of themselves and their situations. Self-confident people trust their own abilities, have a general sense of control in their lives, and believe that, within reason, they will be able to do what they wish, plan, and expect. Having self-confidence does not mean that individuals will be able to do everything. Self-confident people have expectations that are realistic. Even when some of their expectations are not met, they continue to be positive and to accept themselves. People who are not self-confident depend too much on the approval of others in order to feel good about themselves. They tend to avoid taking risks because they fear failure. They generally do not expect to be successful. They often put themselves down and tend to ignore compliments〔赞美〕paid to them By contrast,self-confident people are willing to risk the disapproval of others because they generally trust their own abilities. They tend to accept themselves;they don't feel they have to conform in order to be accepted. Many factors affect the development of self-confidence. Parents' attitudes are crucial(关键性的) to children's feelings about themselves, particularly in children's early years. When parents provide acceptance, children receive a solidfoundation for good feelings about themselves. If one or both parents are much to critical or demanding, or if they are overprotective and discourage children's moves toward independence, children may come to believe they are unqualified or inadequate. Surprisingly, lack of self-confidence is not necessarily related to lack of ability. Instead it is often the result of focusing too much on the unrealistic expectations or standards of others, especially parents and society. Friends' influences can be as powerful or more powerful than those of parents and society in shaping feelings of one's self. Students in their college years reexamine values and develop their own identities and thus are particularly sensitive to the influence of friends.5. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about________.A. the sources of self-confidenceB. the lack of self-confidenceC. the development of self-confidenceD. the benefits of self-confidence6. According to the passage, self-confident people tend to____.D. beA. depend on othersB. control othersC. avoid riskspractical7. Which of the following can we learn about self-confidence according to the passage?A. Self-confidence is usually the symbol of special abilities.B. Parents' protection prevents children's self-confidence development.C. Parents and friends matter in building one's self-confidence.D. College students are the least self-confident group in society.8. What might the author most probably continue to talk about in the following passage?A. What one should avoid in building self-confidence.B. Lack of self-confident has many side effects.C. What self-confident children usually get from parents.D. How we can become more acceptable.
