China Arrests Former Security Czar in Major Political Purge

Dec. 6, 2014 From “Time”

Zhou Yongkang faces serious corruption charges

Chinese authorities arrested the nation‘s former security czar Zhou Yongkang, once considered the most feared man in China, just before midnight on Dec. 5–the first ever arrest of a member of the nation‘s ruling Politburo Standing Committee, retired or sitting.

The 72-year-old Zhou was also expelled from the Chinese Communist Party.

Zhou‘s suspected rapsheet is extensive, according to Xinhua, the Chinese state newswire:

―The [party‘s] investigation found that Zhou seriously violated the Party‘s political, organizational and confidentiality discipline. He took advantage of his posts to seek profits for others and accepted huge bribes personally and through his family, the statement said. He abused his power to help relatives, mistresses and friends make huge profits from operating businesses, resulting in serious losses of state-owned assets. Zhou leaked the Party‘s and country‘s secrets. He seriously violated self-disciplinary regulations and accepted a large amount of money and properties personally and through his family. Zhou committed adultery with a number of women and traded his power for sex and money.‖

For months, the noose had been tightening around Zhou, who retired from the Standing Committee in 2012 due to age limits. Dozens of his known associates and underlings were arrested in three of his previous spheres of influence: the nat ion‘s domestic security apparatus, which received more official funding than the Chinese military did; the highly lucrative state-owned oil industry; and the populous province of Sichuan.

Zhou‘s family members, including his wife, brother and son, have bee n detained. Last year, Bo Xilai, a former Zhou political acolyte and ex-chief of Chongqing municipality, was sentenced to life imprisonment for corruption and other crimes.

Over the summer, the party had placed Zhou under formal investigation for ―serious disciplinary violations,‖ a codeword for corruption. It was quite the comedown for a man who once controlled the nation‘s panopticon state security machine.

Since taking office in 2012, China‘s President Xi Jinping has unleashed an anti-graft campaign that has resulted in thousands of arrests of government officials. Xi famously promised to nab both ―tigers and flies,‖ high-ranking leaders and the lowliest of communist cadres. And there was no mightier tiger than Zhou.

Zhou will almost certainly be convicted, if past political investigations are any indication. But it‘s still going to take a lot more than midnight announcements to convince a skeptical public that graft won‘t flourish in China‘s future.

For China, anti-graft campaign is a long and hard journey. Because of the tradition culture, in China, official is the best job. The official have the highest social status, and they never worry about losing job. But some of the official forget their wage come from taxpayer, and their power is given by the people. They take advantage of his posts to seek profits for others.

The constitution addresses that all of the privileges of PRC belong to the people and the people is the master of our country. So i think every official should be well educated and be always remember that he is the Servant of people, and trying their best to improve people‘s lives is their duty.

Zhou‘s behaviors badly undermined the reputation of the Party, significantly damaged the cause of the Party and the people, and have yielded serious consequences. And this issue set an example to all our people that no matter how powerful he or she is, if he or she damaged the cause of the Party and the people, he or she will not escape justice. So this is a big step for our government.

STRONG CAMPAIGN DELIVERS

TEAM EFFORT: Newly re-elected National Party Botany electorate Member of Parliament Jami-Lee Ross, left, is celebrating his political success with wife Lucy Schwaner, right, and son Henry Schwaner Ross. Times photo Wayne Martin.

JAMI-Lee Ross knows the numbers by heart.

―We delivered 70,000 campaign flyers, 20,000 personalised letters and had 150 signs up aroun d the electorate,‖ says Mr Ross, re-elected yesterday as the National Party‘s Member of Parliament for Botany.

―Those are huge numbers and I don‘t think we would have had the result we had without the support of those people.‖

Mr Ross retained the Botany s eat in yesterday‘s general election by a margin of 12,524 votes.

He received 19,107 of the 29,626 electorate candidate votes cast.

Labour Party representative Tofik Mamedov finished second, with 6583 electorate candidate ballots.

Conservative Party candidate Paul Young polled third with 2784 votes.

Independent candidate David McCormick was fourth on 579 votes.

Mr Ross was relaxing at home with his wife, Howick Local Board member Lucy Schwaner, and young son Henry Schwaner Ross, when the Times visited them today.

He says it feels great to again have the voters‘ endorsement.

―I‘m very lucky to have Lucy‘s support also, and I don‘t think I‘d be able to be the MP I am without her,‖ says Mr Ross.

Mr Ross puts his success as a political candidate down to the results achieved by the National Government over the past three years.

―All those factors, combined with me getting out and talking to people even more than I normally do, means we are able to succeed in Botany.‖

Mr Ross ran a high profile political campaign.

He relied on support from a large team of dedicated volunteers of a wide range of ages and ethnicities.

Despite his impressive election night victory, Mr Ross has little time to digest his success. He‘s travelling to Wellington tomorrow and will attend the National Party‘s first post-election caucus meeting this Tuesday.

―I think one of the reasons why the Labour and Green parties did so poorly in this general election is people couldn‘t see them as a unified team of MPs who could lead a government.

―You have to be a unified group to deliver strong, stable government.‖

Elections are the lifeblood of a democracy. The word democracy literally means "the people rule," an important concept in America's history. An effective democracy holds regular elections. In America, elections are held every two years for members of Congress. In these elections, all seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate seats are up for grabs. V oters also regularly cast their ballots for state and city government leaders and local school board members. Sometimes they also have to vote on a proposed law. In the American electoral system, people don't really vote for presidential candidates. Instead, voters cast their ballots for "electors" who support each candidate. Each state has as many electors as the total number of its representatives in Congress. This equals two senators per state plus the number of its representatives in the House (which is based on the state's population). The candidate who has the most votes in a state wins all of the state's electors. To win the presidential election, a candidate must gain at least 270 of the 538 total electoral votes.

Office holiday parties will never be fun if we're always on the clock https://www.360docs.net/doc/0f17629135.html,, Tuesday 9 December 2014 12.30 GMT

It would be far less painful to spend an evening drinking with your boss if you could actually leave work at the office on the other 364 days of the year

This is just more work, with paper s nowflakes and anxiety over whether you‘ll be considered a ?team player‘ if you decide to bail.

The annual office holiday party is already a cultural punchline. We know to expect someone wearing an embarrassing sweater, someone getting too drunk, an ill-fated hookup in the copy room, and waking up feeling deep, deep regret. And every year we meet expectations, instead of upending them. Right about now is when any number of bad magazine articles tell us what to wear and how to behave, as if the right shoes or remembering to drink a glass of water for each cocktail could make your boss‘ terrible bash slightly more bearable.

When I worked a desk job, the problem of the office holiday party plagued me. (Actually, lots of ―office culture‖ plagued me, which is why I no longer work in one.) But I‘m a sociable person, I know how to strike up a conversation. I should have been able to handle myself for a few predictable hours of discount wine and reheated mozzarella sticks. Why did this have to be so difficult? Why did I scramble to arrange s imultaneous plans so I had an excuse to stop by for ―just one drink‖ before bolting? On paper, it fit all the requirements of a fine party, but in practice, there was one key ingredient, far more important than having enough appetizers, that these office shin reheated mozzarella digs were always missing: free will.

The ―eight-hour day‖ movement started during the British Industrial Revolution, when activists established three distinct portions of a day meant to be kept separate –eight hours for work, eight for play, eight for rest. But now, work is encroaching more and more on the latter two. Americans are more likely than ever to work nights and weekends, with over 25% of us working regularly past 10pm. (Brits aren‘t doing much better.) Leisure time is a precious resource to be spent with family, friends or just relaxing by yourself, not wasted on work masquerading as leisure.

We are all adults here, right? Part of being an adult means sucking it up every once in a while, participating in something you‘re not enthusiastic about – for the sake of your family or friends or workplace. Some offices allow you to bring your family or significant other to their parties, which can mitigate the situation. Some offices go all-out and rent out a bar, lavish employees with steak dinners, or raffle off gift certificates for steak dinners, in which case you would find me buying 50 tickets to stack the odds. Having fun is not unheard of, but it‘d be easier to spare a few hours for egg nog with your boss once a year if the rest of the time you could actually clock out at five. The office party can only survive when there‘s the freedom to leave work at work.

Until then, remember to keep drinking a glass of water for every cocktail, wear something festive but appropriate, and if all else fails, have an exit strategy.

2.SUMMARIZATION

This is just more work, with paper snowflakes and anxiety over whether you‘ll be considered a ?team player‘ if you decide to bail.

science – just provide drinks and snacks, assemble an upbeat playlist, have a few activities in your back pocket if people seem into it, ask everyone to dress up a teensy bit fancier than they would normally, et voilà: you have a room full of people enjoying themselves. It should be simple enough. But that formula tends to fall apart when it comes to the month of December and your place of work.

https://www.360docs.net/doc/0f17629135.html,MENT

People are enigmatic in the workplace, and many people say that it is impossible to make friends with colleagues. Perhaps you are lucky enough to work in an office where you consider your coworkers your friends. You hang out by each other‘s desks, get drinks after work, maybe even voluntarily see each other on the weekends. If that‘s the case, congratulations, your office sounds really fun and I bet it has a ping-pong table or something. But welcome to how the other half lives, a place where work is work and best left right there –at work –along with everyone involved, especially that guy from finance who can never get your name right. For most people, a holiday office party is not something attended freely and enthusiastically –it‘s just more work, except with paper snowflake decorations and anxiety over whether you won‘t be considered a ―team player‖ if you decide to bail.

UK judge praises students for helping overturn murder conviction The Guardian, Tuesday 9 December 2014 12.22 GMT

Press Association

A judge has praised the ―diligent‖ work of law students for helping overturn a former gang member‘s murder conviction.

Dwaine George, 30, was convicted of the shooting of 18-year-old Daniel Dale in Manchester in 2001, and jailed for life in 2002.

George, who always denied murder and maintained his innocence, was ordered to serve a minimum of 12 years behind bars and was released last year on a life licence.

After a failed appeal in 2004, the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) referred the murder conviction to the court of appeal for a second time.

George‘s appeal case was prepared by law students at Cardiff University working under the university‘s Innocence Project, which was set up within its law school to consider potential miscarriage of justice cases.

On Tuesday, Sir Brian Leveson, president of the Queen‘s bench division, and two other judges quashed George‘s conviction, saying it was no longer safe.

Leveson, sitting with Mr Justice Green and Mr Justice Goss, expressed the co urt‘s gratitude to the CCRC for the part it had played in the appeal.

He also paid tribute to the work of the Innocence Project and pro bono unit at Cardiff Law School, which took up the appellant‘s case ―and pursued it so diligently‖.

Dale, who had never been in trouble with the police, was gunned down as he chatted with friends in the street and was found collapsed in an alleyway off Farnborough Road in Miles Platting.

He was due to be called as a witness in a crown court trial into the killing of his friend Paul Ward, 16, who was stabbed to death in Cheetham Hill in January 2001 in a separate case.

Ex-gang member George, formerly of New Moston, was found guilty in April 2002 after a trial at Preston crown court of Dale‘s murder and charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The judge described how the CCRC obtained its own scientific evidence and referred George‘s case to the appeal court on the grounds that there was a real possibility that the evidence of gunsho t residue ―does not now attract the value attributed to it at trial, and therefore does not support the identification evidence‖.

The CCRC also questioned the admissibility of voice identification evidence.

From this news we know that a murder case was referred to the court of appeal for a second time. I am impressed with the spirit of Seeking the truth. Just like hundreds years ago most people believe that the earth is the central of the universe. But Giordano Bruno, in spite of the pressure from the Pope, supported Copernicus‘s heliocentric theory. And he developed the ―theory of infinite universe ‖,finally ,he devote himself to the truth. As a student we should seek the truth, and always ask what is that or why is that.

Recently There is anther news in china, and it is called the case of hugejiletu(呼格吉勒图案). It happened in Hohhot City of inner mongolia autonomous region. A 18 years old worker named hugejiletu 呼格吉勒图was accused as a murder and was executed only after 60 days. But the real murder was arrested in 2005, so hugejiletu was innocent, but he will never know it. But the intermediate people's court of Hohhot municipality didn‘t hear the case since 2014. So i really want to say that seeking the truth is the very potential especially for the court.

The next big thing? Body weight training

From :https://www.360docs.net/doc/0f17629135.html,

Curious about what‘s going to be hot in the wellness sphere next year? Well, you‘ve come to the right place. We put our sneakers to the ground to find out what fitness trends could be making their way into your gym in 2015. Happy sweating.

According to an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) survey of more than 3,000 fitness professionals worldwide, body weight training is predicted to be the next big thing. ―Expect to see it continue to expand in all movement experiences inc luding both group and personal training,‖ says Carol Espel, Senior Director, Group Fitness and Pilates at Equinox. ―Look for the comprehensive incorporation of gymnastics, adult jungle gyms, workout spaces that are uncluttered with weight machines and open for training, greater suspension training options, primal movements, and more programming that is less focused on standard weight lifting protocols.‖ In other words, those tried and true exercises that don‘t require equipment—like lunges, squats, push-ups, and burpees—are here to stay, so embrace them.

https://www.360docs.net/doc/0f17629135.html,: 25 Exercises You Can Do Anywhere

OK, HIIT (think P90X) did take a hit over the past year dropping from the number one spot on the 2013 ACSM survey to number two this year. But we assure you that this technique, which alternates intense bursts of exercise with short, sometimes active, recovery periods, isn‘t going anywhere. The reason: It‘s super effective. ―People are exercising in shorter bursts and they are still seeing results,‖ notes Donna Cyrus, Senior Vice President of Programming at Crunch. This should be no surprise, though. After all, who wants to slave away at the gym for hours each day when you can blast fat in as little as 20 minutes? Exactly.

Boutique studios that specialize in one specific fitness genre—be it underwater cycling or trampoline workouts—will continue to rise in popularity. However, within this group fitness sector, indoor group running has been steadily gaining momentum. From big gym chains like Equinox and Crunch to smaller studios like Mile High Run Club, treadmill-based training is poised to become the new ―it‖ workout. Yes, many view this piece of machinery as a torture device (I know I‘ve called it a treadmill on more than one occasion), but these classes are truly beneficial, helping to improve your running through speed, incline, and interval-based drills.

―There is a trend in fitness to return to simplicity, and running is the oldest form of exercise,‖ explains Andia Winslow, a fitness expert and coach at Mile High Running Club. ―With indoor treadmill training, participants are in a controlled and yet challenging environment where they can, regardless of fitness level, keep up with class while running on industry elite commercial equipment. With less strain on bones, joints and tendons, runners can focus instead on form, specialized and programmed intensity and being wholly engaged with their runs.‖ Even better: You will never have to worry about it being too cold or raining too hard to log those miles.

Unit2 Gender Issues Men turn to jobs women usually do 1.HOUSTON - Over the last decade, American men of all backgrounds have begun flocking to fields such as teaching, nursing and waiting tables that have long been the province of women. 2."The way I look at it is that anything, basically, that a woman can do, a guy can do," said Miguel Alquicira, who graduated from high school when construction and manufacturing jobs were scarce and became a dental assistant. 3.The trend began well before the crash, and appears to be driven by a variety of factors, including financial concerns, quality-of-life issues and a gradual erosion of g ender stereotypes. 4.In interviews, about two dozen men played down the economic considerations, saying that the stigma associated with choosing such jobs had faded, and that the jobs were appealing not just because they offered stable employment, but because they were more satisfying. 5."I.T. is just killing viruses and clearing paper jams all day," said Scott Kearney, 43, who tried information technology and other fields before becoming a nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. 6.An analysis of United States census data by The New York Times shows that from 2000 to 2010, occupations that are more than 70 percent female accounted for almost a third of all job growth for men, double the share of the previous decade. 7.That does not mean that men are displacing women - those same jobs accounted for almost two-thirds of women's job growth. But in Texas, for example, the number of men who are registered nurses nearly doubled in that time period. 8.The shift includes low-wage jobs as well. Nationally, two-thirds more men were bank tellers, almost twice as many were receptionists and two-thirds more were waiting tables in 2010 than a decade earlier. 9.Even more striking is the type of men who are making the shift. From 1970 to 1990, according to a study by Mary Gatta, senior scholar at Wider Opportunities for Women, an organization based in Washington, D.C., and Patricia A. Roos, a sociologist at Rutgers University in New Jersey, men who took so-called pink-collar jobs tended to be foreign-born, non-English speakers with low education levels. 10.Now, though, the trend has spread among men of nearly all races and ages, more than a third of whom have a college degree. In fact, the shift is most pronounced among young, white, college-educated men like Charles Reed, a sixth-grade math teacher at Patrick Henry Middle School in Houston. 11.Mr. Reed, 25, intended to go to law school after a

Lesson Nine. Iraq: Who won the war? Not the 90,000 Iraqi civilians or the 4,200 US and UK troops killed since 2003. The big winners are the money men who have made billions. Raymond Whitaker and Stephen Foley report 1.Five years ago today, Britain stood on the brink of war. On 16 March 2003, United Nations weapons inspec-tors were advised to leave Iraq within 48 hours, and the "shock and awe" bombing campaign began less than 100 hours later, on 20 March. The moment the neocons around President George Bush had worked so long for, aided by the moral fervour of Tony Blair, was about to arrive. 2."I believe demolishing Hussein's military power and liberating Iraq would be a cakewalk," Kenneth Adelman, a leading neocon, had said a few weeks before, and so it proved. Within barely a month, Saddam's bronze statue in Baghdad's Firdaus Square was scrap metal. But every other prediction by the Bush administration's hawks proved wrong. 3.No weapons of mass destruction –Britain's key justification for war –have been found. The Pentagon acknowledged last week that a review of more than 600,000 captured Iraqi documents showed "no evidence that Saddam Hussein's regime had any operational links with Osama bin Laden's al-Qa'ida terrorist network". 4.In 2008, there are still more American troops in Iraq than during the invasion, with no exit yet in sight. Britain's Ministry of Defence has just admitted that it has been unable to withdraw as many British troops as it planned – there are 4,000 still based just outside Basra, instead of the projected 2,500. So far 3,987 American soldiers and 197 British troops have died in Iraq. 5.So, five years on, who can be said to have won the war? Certainly not Iraqi civilians, at least 90,000 of whom have died violently since 2003, at the most conservative estimate. Other studies have multiplied that figure by five or six. Two million Iraqis have fled the country, and at least as many again are internally displaced. Baghdad households suffered power cuts of up to eight hours a day in Saddam's time; now they can expect less than eight hours of electricity a day on average. The US troop "surge" has cut the number of murders, but there are still 26 a day in the capital. The list goes on. 6.Nor have the eager promotors of the war, such as Mr Adelman, fared well. (By October 2006 he was admitting: "We're losing in Iraq.") The most arrogant of them all, Donald Rumsfeld, the ex-secretary of defence, was reluctantly dropped by Mr Bush in his second term. His former deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, who famously said that WMD had been used as the excuse for war because it was the only topic Washington's bureaucracy could agree on, was forced to resign as president of the World Bank after arranging a pay rise for his girlfriend. The Senate refused to confirm John Bolton

英美报刊选读 passage 13 the decline of neatness (含翻译)

The Decline of Neatness 行为标准的蜕化 By Norman Cou s ins Anyone with a passion for hanging labels on people or things should have little difficulty in recognizing that an apt tag for our time is the “Unkempt Generation”. 任何一个喜欢给别人或事物贴标签的人应该不难发现我们这个时代合适的标签是“邋遢的一代”。 I am not referring solely to college kids. The sloppiness virus has spread to all sectors of society," People go to all sorts of trouble and expense to look uncombed, unshaved. unpressed.3 我说这话不仅仅是针对大学生。邋遢这种病毒已经蔓延到社会各个部分。人们刻意呈现一幅蓬头散发、边幅不修、衣着不整的形象。 The symbol of the times is blue jeans—not just blue jeans in good condition but jeans that are frayed, torn, discolored. They don't get that way naturally. No one wants blue jeans that are crisply clean or spanking new. 如今时代潮流的象征是穿蓝色牛仔裤--不是完好的牛仔裤,而是打磨过的,撕裂开的,和褪色了的牛仔裤。正常穿着磨损很难达到上述效果。没有人喜欢穿干净崭新的牛仔裤。 Manufacturers recognize a big market when they see it, and they compete with one another to offer jeans(that are made to look as though they've just been discarded by clumsy house painters after ten years of wear. )生产商意识到这将是个潜力巨大的市场,于是展开了激烈地竞争,生产出的
