Part VI The 18th Century Question: Analyze Gulliver’s Travels to illustrate the use of satire in it. Answer: 1) The first part is full of references to current politics. Lilliput is the miniature of England. Swift’s satire is directed against the English ruling class, the two political parties(the Tories and the Whigs)and the religious disputes. 2) In the second part, the King of Brobdingnag is described as a wise and kind king, and the inhabitants are said to be a civilized race. After Gulliver’s account of the English society, the King condem ns the English social system and the aggressive wars. Here we see that the writer censures these evils through the mouth of the King. 3) In the country of Laputa, the King and his ministers use cruel methods to suppress any rebellion of the people living on the condition below. Swift condemns the cruelty of the ruling class to the people. This part contains Swift’s sharp satire against all kinds of English social institutions. It is a parody on scholars and projectors. 4) The fourth part has been considered the best part of the book because the satire here is the sharpest and the bitterest. It shows Swift’s hatred and disgust for those people who bring evils and inhuman life modes to human society. Part V: The 17-th Century Question: Satan is the best developed character in Paradise Lost. Identify his character traits. Answer 1.1) Satan, like a conquered and banished giant, remains obeyed and admired by those who follow him down to hell. He is firmer than the rest of the angels. 2) Satan is the spirit of questioning the authority of God. When he gets to the Garden of Eden, he believes in no reason why Adam and Eve should not taste the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. 3) Though defeated, Satan prevails; though wounded, he triumphs; though feeble in

The study of English literature usually begins with the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf. The Anglo-Saxons first brought to England the Germanic language and culture. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the Normans bought to England a fresh wave of Mediterranean civilization, which includes Greek culture, Roman law, and the Christian religion. It is the cultural influences of these two conquests that provide the source for the rise and growth of English literature. The English at that time was called Old English, which is quite hard to recognize today. Geoffrey Chaucer, father of English literature, is a great representative of the Mediaeval Age. He’s the first person to use English to write stories. By the time of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign (1558-1603),

It is a reaction against realism. It rejects rationalism which is the theoretical base of realism; it excludes from its major concern the external, objective, material world, which is the only creative source of realism; by advocating a free experimentation on new forms and new techniques in literary creation, it casts away almost all the traditional elements in literature such as story, plot, character, chronological narration, etc., which are essential to realism. As a result, the works created by the modernist writers can often be labeled as anti-novel, anti-poetry or anti-drama. (See Chang Yaoxin, 380-381) 2 The Stream of consciousness ●The tradition of the stream of consciousness can be traced to various sources. The earliest attempt to concentrate the subject matter of fiction on the inner

What is the French influence over English literature? The French influence is most marked in the drama. Rimed couplets instead of blank verse, the unities, a more regular construction, and the presentation rather than individual — these were some of the French requirements which the English dramatists had more or less in mind. The comedies are coarse in language and their view of the relations between men and women is immoral and dishonest. What is the main theme of Sonnet 18? This poem asserts the power of literature to combat the ravages of time and declare the greatness of man and his immortality. Shakespeare expresses that as long as there are breaths in mankind, his poetry will also live on, and ensures the immortality of his thought. What are the features of Dickens’s works? Dickens’s novels offer a most complete and realistic picture of the English bourgeois society of his age. They reflect the protest of the people against capitalist exploitation; criticize the vices of capitalist society. Dickens is a petty bourgeois intellectual. He could not overstep the limits of his class. He failed to see the necessity of a bitter struggle of the oppressed against their oppressors. There is a definite tendency for a reconciliation of the contradictions of capitalist society. Almost all his novels have happy endings. His novels tell much of the experiences of his childhood. Dickens is a great humorist. His novels are full of humor and laughter.
