覺林菩薩偈

Bodhisattva Forest of Awareness’s Praise of Buddha

尔时，觉林菩萨承 威力，普 十方而说颂言： 爾時，覺林菩薩承

威力，遍 十方

而說頌言：

Then the enlightening being Forest of Awareness,

imbued with the power of Buddha, looked over the

ten directions and said in verse,

Then the Bodhisattva Forest of Awareness, endowed with the

power of the Buddha, looked to the ten directions and said in

verse of praise:

譬如工画师， 譬如工畫師， It's like a painter It is like a painter

布诸彩色， 布諸彩色， Spreading the various colors: Distributing various colors:

妄取异相， 妄取異相， Delusions grasps different forms Delusion grasps different characteristics, 大种无差别。 大種無差別。 But the elements have no distinctions. But the elements have no distinctions.

大种中无色， 大種中無色， In the elements there's no form, In the elements there is no form,

色中无大种， 色中無大種， And no form in the elements; And in form, no elements;

亦 离大种， 亦 大種， And yet apart from the elements Yet not apart from the elements

而 色可得。 而 色可得。 No form can be found. Is any form to be had.

心中无彩画， 心中無彩畫， In the mind is no painting, In the mind there is no painting,

彩画中无心， 彩畫中無心， In painting there is no mind; In painting there is no mind;

然 离于心， 然 於心， Yet not apart from mind But yet not apart from the mind

彩画可得。 彩畫可得。 Is any painting to be found. Is any painting to be had.

彼心恒 住， 彼心恒 住， That mind never stops, The mind, forever, non-abiding,

无 难思议， 無 思 ， Manifesting all forms, Immeasurably, inconceivably,

示现一 色， 示現一 色， Countless, inconceivably many, Manifests all forms,

各各 相知。 各各 相知。 Unknown to one another. Unknown to one another.

譬如工画师， 譬如工畫師， Just as a painter Just as a painter

能知自心， 能知自心， Can't know his own mind May not know his own mind,

而由心故画， 而由心故畫， Yet paints due to mind, Yet paints due to the mind;

诸法性如是。 諸法性如是。 So is the nature of all things. So is the nature of all dharmas.

心如工画师， 心如工畫師， Mind is like an artist, Mind is like the painter,

能画诸世间， 能畫諸世間， Able to paint the worlds: Able to paint various worlds:

五蕴悉从生， 五蘊悉從生， The five clusters all are born thence; The five aggregates thus originate;

无法而 造。 無法而 造。 There's nothing it doesn't make. There is no dharma it does not create.

如心 亦尔， 如心 亦爾， As is the mind, so is the Buddha; As is the mind, so is the Buddha;

如 众生然， 如 眾生然， As is the Buddha, so living beings: As the Buddha, so sentient beings:

应知 心， 應知 與心， Know that Buddha and mind Should know that Buddha and mind 体性皆无尽。 體性皆無盡。 Are in essence inexhaustible. In essence are both without bound.

若人知心行， 若人知心行， If people know the actions of mind If people know that actions of mind

普造诸世间， 普造諸世間， Create all the worlds, Make all the worlds,

是人则 ， 是人則見 ， They will see the Buddha Then they will see the Buddha,

了 真实性。 了 真實性。 And understand Buddha's true nature. And understand the nature of the Buddha.

心 住于身， 心 住於身， Mind does not stay in the body, Mind does not abide in the body,

身亦 住心， 身亦 住心， Nor body stay in mind: Nor body abides in mind:

而能 事， 而能 事， Yet it's able to perform Buddha-work Yet it is able to perform deeds of Buddha,

自在未曾 。 自在未曾 。 Freely, without precedent. Freely, and unprecedented.

若人欲了知， 若人欲了知， If people want to really know If people indeed wish to know

世一 ， 世一 ， All Buddhas of all times, The Buddhas of the three time periods;

应 法界性， 應 法界性， They should contemplate the nature of the cosmos: They should contemplate the nature of the dharma-realm, 一 唯心造。 一 唯心造。 All is but mental construction. All is but mind's creation.
