Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

Shortly after Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution, a lady was asked what she thought of the idea that humans and animals came down from a common

ancestor (祖先). "Let us hope it is not true," she said. "And, if it is true, let us hope it does not become public knowledge."

This story is probably untrue, but it illustrates well the attitudes of the time. Today, we are more comfortable with our past. Many people accept Darwin' s view of how we came into being - that our bodies' evolved through the process of natural selection acting on our genes.

However, Darwin believed evolution was responsible for far more than just our physical characteristics. He saw it as the major influence in shaping our psychology. Indeed, he predicted that "in the distant future, psychology will be based on a new foundation." This foundation was, of course, his theory of evolution.

To those in favor of concepts like free will and personal responsibility, such an idea seems quite stupid. But a growing number of scientists are questioning the extent to which our behavior is controlled by our culture. Their research has revealed increasing evidence that the human mind is made up of natural mechanisms (if; h-g,), which control everything from the way we perceive (感知) time and space, to how we learn survival techniques and choose mates.

21. The story about the lady suggests that, in Darwin's time, the theory of evolution made many people feel

A) embarrassed B) delighted C) comfortable D) miserable

22. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 2

A) People's attitudes towards Darwin's view remain unchanged.

B) Darwin's view of man's origin has been widely accepted.

C) Natural selection has no effect on our genes.

D) The story about the lady has proved to be true.

23. The phrase "was responsible for" in Line 1, Paragraph 3 most probably means“ “

A) had the ability to influence C) was to blame for

B) had the duty of D) was the cause of

24. According to Darwin's view, our psychology

A) will change greatly in the future

B) has nothing to do with evolution

C) is mainly shaped by evolution

D) is shaped by our physical characteristics

25. If Darwin's view on our psychology is correct, what controls our behavior

A) The characteristics of our culture.

B) The mechanisms of our mind.

C) The way we perceive time and space.

D) The way we live and choose mates.

Passage Four

Questions are based on the following passage.

November 7, 2000 is a very special day in the United States. V oters all across the nation are electing representatives in local and national races. Some people think they are voting for the president of our country too. They're not! Again, they're voting for representatives, who are called electors.

In most states the electors are chosen on a winner-take-all basis. That makes it possible for one candidate to win the most electors while getting less popular votes nationally than his opponent.

The electors will meet in their respective states and cast their votes for the president and the vice-president on December 18, 2000. The Constitution (宪法) does

not force the electors to vote for the candidates that they promise to vote for, but they almost always do. On January 6, 2001, just two weeks before the new president and vice-president take office, the votes will be counted in the Congress.

If no one gets a majority of the electoral votes, at least 270 out of 538, the winners will be chosen by the Congress. The House of Representatives will choose (one vote per state) the president and the Senate (参议院) will choose the vice-president. It's not likely, but we could actually end up with a president from one party and a vice-president from another.

B) over half of the electoral votes

C) most of the electoral votes from the same party

D) most of the electoral votes from two parties

29. The new president will take office after the voting starts.

A) in about two weeks C) in about two and a half months

B) in about two months D) in about half a year

30. The main idea of the passage is __ the US president is elected.

A) how B) why C) where D) when

One of the best-known proverbs must be “early to bed and early to rise makes a m an healthy, wealthy, and wise.” The promise of health, wealth, and wisdom to those who join the ranks of the early retirees and risers must be particularly appealing to many people in our contemporary society. There is no doubt that one of the greatest concerns of modern man is his health. It is estimated that in the United States $200 billion are spent on health care each year. The medical field has grown into such a big business that it employs 4.8 million people.

Much more interest has been shown in preventive medicine in recent years. This is probably due to the increasing costs of medical treatment, but the writing of such people as Dr. Kenneth Cooper have also played an important role. In his book Aerobics, Dr. Cooper communicated his message of the benefits of exercise so effectively that many other authors have followed in his trail, and literally millions of readers have put on their sports shoes and taken to the highways and byways of America. A recent survey showed that over 17 million people are jogging. Many of these are so serious that they trained themselves to run the 26 miles and 385 yards of the hard and tiring marathons(马拉松) that are organized all over the country. The last time I was in Honolulu , I was amazed to see hundreds of people, young and old,

running for their lives. And I discovered many of them have run in the Hawaiian Marathon. Exercise has also become a major part of conversation. At a dinner party recently, the president of a bank asked me, “ You look like a runner; how far do you run each day” A few days later when I appeared on a national television show, the host suddenly asked me if I was a regular runner. On both occasions the conversation turned to the subject of exercise and I found that this is a subject on many people’s minds.

31. The “early risers” mentioned in Paragraph 1 are ________ .

A) people who go to bed early B) people who have a lot of money

C) people who get up early D) people who give up their work early

32. What does the writer think of the $200 billion spent on health care each year

A) It’s a big sum of money.

B) It’s a huge waste of money.

C) Most people can’t afford the expensive medical treatment.

D) The medical field provides a lot of job opportunities.

33. According to the passage, nowadays what people are most interested in is ________.

A) how to be a millionaire

B) how to keep fit

C) how to win the Hawaiian Marathon

D) how to develop aerobics in American

34. Why are the examples of conversation in the last paragraph used

A) To show a common way of starting a conversation.

B) To show the change in people’s conversation topics.

C) To show the importance of running.

D) To show people’s interest in exercise.

35. Aerobics is a book about _________.

A) marathon B) preventive medicine

C) traveling D) exercise

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

Teacher evaluation (评价) have been carried out in a lot of schools in recent years. Every term students are given the opportunity to evaluate their teachers. They are supposed to judge their teachers’lectures, interests in students’problems, methods of exercise, and general ability to conduct a class. Then, when the teacher has left the classroom, they must write their evaluation o the forms provided. They are not supposed to exchange views or discuss their responses. After everyone has completed the forms, one student collects and puts them in envelopes.

It is very difficult to evaluate another person’s performance fairly. For example, Santa recently wrote irresponsible remarks about her teacher because she was failing the course. Her friend Sam wrote a marvelous description of the same teacher because he was receiving an A in the course. Both Santa and Sam were not fairly evaluating the teacher. They were influence by the grades they were earning and were unfair in their judgments.

Another irresponsible form of evaluation occurred when James rated his teacher excellent because the teacher is “easy”. He gives few tests and only assigns (分配)

one paper during the entire term. His lectures are often filled with jokes and endless stories about his family. On the other hand, James rated Professor Jones poor because he assigns homework daily, gives pretest previews and post-test reviews, and packs his lectures with information.

Santa, Sam, and James have n ot thought about their teachers’ teaching abilities. They have written unfair evaluations and have not given thought to their evaluations. They have not made fair judgments, but instead have been influenced by their own personality and have equated (使等同) light work with excellence in teaching.

C) the grades that they were earning

D) his marvelous remarks

37. James’ evaluation was influenced by ____________.

D) the teacher’s family background

38. The word “easy” in “…the teacher is ‘easy’”(Paragraph 3) most probably means________.

A) not difficult B) not proud

C) not strict D) not serious

39. The students didn’t evaluate their teachers fairly because _________.

A) it was difficult for them to do so

B) they didn’t know how to make judgments

C) their personality affected them a lot

D) they received unfair treatment

40. The best title for this passage is __________.

A) Teacher Evaluations

The servants were up very late on the Saturday evening, getting everything ready for the next day, and while they were busy they saw the glow (暗淡的光) of a fire start in the sky. By 3 o'clock on the Sunday morning, the glow had become so bright that one of the servants, Jane, woke her master to see it. Pepys went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, so after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy his room and put his things back where he wanted them after the servants had cleaned everything. While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard that the fire was a bad one: three hundred houses had been burned down in the night and the fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower of London and climbed up on a high part of the building so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. Someone told him that the fire had started in a

World of the Future Scientists think that wonderful things may come true in the future. Future means a time that is not yet here. It can be a short time from now or a long time from now. Some of the underwater wonders are almost ready to come true now. Others won't come tree, we think, until a long time from now. Some, of course, may never come true--but who knows for sure? They may. What are some of the wonders that may come true in the future? A world underground The green utopia (an ideally perfect place) underground is going to help us regain a more harmonious relationship between the often opposing sides of large-scale development and our ecosystem. The city may be called Alice City, from Alice's Adventure in the Wonderland, which offers a wonderful world that is almost as fantastical as that was described in the book. A large clear dome (圆顶), within an area of open parkland, leads into a multi-leveled structured metropolis of underground offices, housing, transportation and public areas. There will be everything to make the city as self-sufficient as possible including shopping malls, theatres and sports complexes in addition to facilities (contained in a separate structure) for power generation, heating and waste recycling. Apart from offering an almost limitless space for development, such underground development has many more attractive ecological advantages over traditional forms of housing. It is less disturbing than high rise development and therefore favorable in environmentally sensitive areas. Land above the complex can be set aside for parkland and recreational use. In towns or cities where pollution levels are high, air can be filtered through air pipes in the roof of an underground housing or industrial complex. A world underwater At the docks you step into a shiny metal submarine that is shaped like a shark. The door is closed behind you, and powerful engine starts to push. Down slides the submarine--like a shark diving. Deeper and deeper under the water. Soon all sunlight is gone. The headlights of the diving ship are turned on. Then, six miles below, you come to the sea bottom. From the diving submarine, you change to tiny jet boat and ride along close to the bottom of the ocean, almost as you would skim over the land in an air-plane. As you travel, you have fun looking out the window at the sights on the bottom of the ocean. You see strange fish and underwater mountains, cliffs, and valleys. But more than that--hotels and mining camps and farms and factories! A world in space Let's go back to dry land and take a future journey the other way-up instead of down. Huge rocket liners take you into space to visit the Moon Camp. You walk around on the moon in a special moon suit. You visit an observatory where a giant telescope looks far into space--farther than anyone has ever been able to see from Earth. You go deep down into one of the moon mines. After you have visited the moon, you visit the Mars Colony and the Venus Exploration Outpost. A new world on the Earth Let's go back to Earth. In the far, far future, girls--and boys, too--may be playing with dolls that look like the people of the planets visited by our spacemen. To control or run all kinds of toys, boys and girls may learn to use special computers --machines that answer questions and do arithmetic faster than you can blink. Bicycles and perhaps skates may be run by jet power, and a new thing to ride may be a small flying saucer. Imagine a race between them! There may be telepathy (心灵感应) helmets that send thought waves from your brain to that of your friend miles away. You just think a thought and your friend knows it! You can have secrets with each other that nobody else can turn in on! Robots There will be other surprises in the future. How would you like to have a robot playmate? Having robot playmates may not be-so much fun as it seems. But maybe a boy with a wrench (扳手) and a screwdriver can fix the robot so that it won't be too perfect! Food What about the food of the future? Scientists think that much of it will be artificial --made in factories from such surprising things as coal, limestone, air, and water. You don't think that ice-cream or cake or candy or even bread and potatoes made out of these things will taste very good? You may be wrong. These artificial things will be blended so skillfully by food chemists that the food of the future probably will be delicious. It probably will also be healthful because all the things that you need to live a long and healthy life will be put into it. A longer life Scientists of the future will almost certainly find other ways to make life last longer. They probably will find cures for most diseases. Hospitals will probably have "body banks" that can give you almost any new part you need to keep on living. People of the future may live to be a lot older than 100 years. TV Are you wondering whether there'll be television in the future? There'll almost certainly be wonderful programs. Television screens probably will be large and flat, hanging on the wall or going across the four walls of a room. People on the screen will look as real as if they were right in the room with you. Highways What about highways of the future? Well, a very small child probably will be able to drive a car. Nobody will need to steer. Electric signals will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the "driver" wants to go. And it probably will be impossible for cars to smash together. Controls that won't even have to be touched will make all speeding cars miss each other or will put on the brakes. Driving by car will be as safe as being at home. Weather control But maybe the most wonderful surprise in the future will be weather control. Cities may have giant plastic domes over them to keep out snow, rain, or storms. When you plan a picnic in a park, you won't have to worry about rain. It will rain only when the "weatherman" thinks it is needed to freshen the air inside the city. All other days will be fair and warm. The future should be a wonderful time in which to live. But the time you axe living in now was also "a wonderful future" to the people who lived 100 years ago. 1. The underground city would get its name from a book called Alice's Adventure in the Wonderland. A. Y B. N C. NG 2. The multi-leveled structure underground would include everything that is necessary to a city, from offices, shopping malls to power and heating system. A. Y B. N C. NG

Education is all enormous and expensive part of American life. Its size is matched by its variety. Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone—not just for a privileged elite(精英,精华 . Schools ale expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing , radio repair, computer programming or driver training , along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics , history, and languages. Students choose their curricula(课程 depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The underlying(潜在的 goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a sense of civic and community consciousness. Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns . The approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead , Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Students spend much time, learning how to use resource materials libraries, statistics and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives . Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation of facts . This is America’s answer to the searching question that thoughtful parents all over the world are asking themselves in the fast-moving time:“How Can one prepare today’s child for a tomorrow that one can neither predict nor understand?”
