"Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they're given after all. Choices can be hard."

I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30, and I'd been married for a year. I told my wife that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most start-ups don't and I wasn't sure what to expect. She told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I had been a garage inventor. I had always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.

I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him that I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me and finally said, "That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job." That logic made some sense to me,and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I would regret trying and failing. And I suspected that I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all.

After much consideration, I took the less secure path to follow my passion, and I'm proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.

(1)What inspired the author to start Amazon 16 years ago? (No more than 15 words)

(2)How did the author's wife respond to his crazy idea of building an online bookstore? (No more than 10 words)

(3)What was the attitude of the author's boss towards his starting a company online? (No more than 10 words)

(4)What's your understanding of the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? (No more than 15 words)

(5)What is the most important factor when you make your career choice? Give your reasons. (No more than 20 words)

(1)The fact that the Internet usage was growing sharply / fast per year. That the Internet usage was growing at 230 percent per year./The fact that more and more people were

using the Internet.

(2)She responded by telling me to go for it / my dream. She wanted / inspired me to follow my passion.

(3)He thought it a good idea but unsuitable for me./He didn't support his idea (to start a company online)./He wasn't in favor of his idea (to start a company online). He held a negative attitude towards his idea.

(4)For all of us, our choices decide / determine who we are finally. For all of us, our choices determine what we get finally./For all of us, our choices have a great effect on our life / future finally.

(5)Interest, without which I can't devote myself to the career and overcome the challenge./Better career prospects. (A good pay.) I hope to choose a career that can lead me to a bright future.

I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me.“我发现互联网的使用率以每年230%的速度增长。 The fact that the Internet usage was growing sharply / fast per year. That the Internet usage was growing at 230 percent per year./The fact that more and more people were using the Internet.。

She told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I had been a garage inventor. I had always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.“她告诉我应该去。 She responded by telling me to go for it / my dream. She wanted / inspired me to follow my passion.。

He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me and finally said,’That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job.‘”他带我在中央公园散步了很长一段时间,仔细地听我说,最后他说:“这听起来真是个好主意,但对那些还没有找到好工作的人来说,这是个更好的主意。” He thought it a good idea but unsuitable for me./He didn't support his idea (to start a company online)./He wasn't in favor of his idea (to start a company online). He held a negative attitude towards his idea.。

After much consideration, I took the less secure path

to follow my passion, and I'm proud of that choice.” For all of us, our choices decide / determine who we are finally. For all of us, our choices determine what we get finally./For all of us, our choices have a great effect on our life / future finally.。

Interest, without which I can't devote myself to the career and overcome the challenge./Better career prospects. (A good pay.) I hope to choose a career that can lead me to a bright future.

Robert F. Kennedy once said that a country's GDP measures "everything except that which makes life worthwhile. "With Britain voting to leave the European Union, and GDP already predicted to slow as a result, it is now a timely moment to assess what he was referring to.

The question of GDP and its usefulness has annoyed policymakers for over half a century. Many argue that it is a flawed(有缺陷的) concept. It measures things that do not matter and misses things that do. By most recent measures, the UK's GDP has been the envy of the Western world, with record low unemployment and high growth figures. If everything was going so well, then why did over 17 million people vote for Brexit, despite the warnings about what it could do to their country's economic prospects.

A recent annual study of countries and their ability to convert growth into well-being sheds some light on that question. Across the 163 countries measured, the UK is one of the poorest performers in ensuring that economic growth is translated into meaningful improvements for its citizens. Rather than just focusing on GDP, over 40 different sets of criteria from health, education and civil society engagement have been measured to get a more rounded assessment of how

countries are performing.

While all of these countries face their own challenges, there are a number of consistent themes. Yes, there has been a budding economic recovery since the 2008 global crash, but in key indicators in areas such as health and education, major economies have continued to decline. Yet this isn't the case with all countries. Some relatively poor European countries have seen huge improvements across measures including civil society, income equality and the environment.

This is a lesson that rich countries can learn: When GDP is no longer regarded as the sole measure of a country's success, the world looks very different.

So, what Kennedy was referring to was that while GDP has been the most common method for measuring the economic activity of nations, as a measure, it is no longer enough. It does not include important factors such as environmental quality or education outcomes all things that contribute to a person's sense of well-being.

The sharp hit to growth predicted around the world and in the UK could lead to a decline in the everyday services we depend on for our well-being and for growth. But policymakers who refocus efforts on improving well-being instead of simply worrying about GDP figures could avoid the forecasted doom and may even see progress.

I stood at the edge of the cliff. The wind stung my eyes, cutting into my skin. Dark-feathered birds circled the air, swooping (俯冲) low over the ocean every now and then to catch their dinner. Hundreds of feet below, the deep ocean beat against the rough sandy shore. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with excitement — and at the same time, fear.

Behind me, I heard the rest of the crew start to mutter. I was here for the shooting of a movie as I was one of the lead actors in the film Dangerous Things, and this scene was right in the middle of the climax It was vital that this went right.

The director had talked to me about getting a stunt double (替身演员), but I'd persuaded him that I could handle the dive. I'd taken a diving course a few years ago, and I'd been taking swimming lessons since I was five years old. I had been pretty confident that I could do this — up till now.

Someone called out, “Ceria, you don't have to do this! Are you sure you want to dive?” It was one of the producers, Callie Evans. I knew I couldn't turn back now. I couldn't bear to see the disappointed look on the director's face when he was told that I couldn't do it.

At that moment, all my fears and worries broke free. The expectation of adventure and victory seemed to move all the hesitation. I swooped downwards. The air on either side of me cut into my extended arms. I knew that this wonderful feeling of flight would only last a few seconds, yet time seemed to slow down so I could hear the thrilled whoops of my crew and a round of applause that seemed to echo in my pounding ears.

(1)At the beginning, how did the author feel about what she was going to do?(No more than 3 words)

(2)What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean in English?(No more than 15 words)

(3)Why was the author that confident in diving? (No more than 10 words)

(4)What was the crew's reaction while the author was diving down? (No more than 10 words) (5)How do you like the author? Please explain why. (No more than 25 words)

(1)She felt excited and frightened / fearful.

(2)It was important that the scene was properly shot.

Or: (Because it was the climax of the movie), the dive must perform successfully / well.

(3)Because she had taken diving and swimming courses.

(4)The crew cheered loudly for her.

(5)I think the author was brave and confident, because she could overcome the fear to challenge herself and enjoy success.

Or: I think she was brave because she didn't chicken out when facing challenges.

I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with excitement — and at the same time, fear.(我深深地吸了一口气,肺里充满了兴奋——同时也充满了恐惧)可知,一开始,作者对她将要做的事情感觉既兴奋又害怕。 She felt excited and frightened / fearful。

I was here for the shooting of a movie as I was one of the lead actors in the film Dangerous Things, and this scene was right in the middle of the climax.(我在这里拍摄一部电影,因为我是电影《危险的事情》的主角之一,而这个场景正好处于高潮的中间)可知,因为这个场景正好处于高潮的中间,因此拍好这个场景是至关重要。 It was important that the scene was properly shot. Or: (Because it was the climax of the movie), the dive must perform successfully / well。

I'd taken a diving course a few years ago, and I'd been taking swimming lessons since I was five years old.(几年前我上过潜水课,从五岁起我就一直在上游泳课)可知,作者对潜水很有信心是因为她学过潜水和游泳课程。 Because she had taken diving and swimming courses。

I could hear the thrilled whoops of my crew and a round of applause The crew cheered loudly for her。

I think the author was brave and confident, because she could overcome the fear to challenge herself and enjoy success. Or: I think she was brave because she didn't chicken out when facing challenges.

Dear James,

It is a beautiful day here and I am sitting under the big tree at the end of the garden. I have just returned from a long bike ride to an old castle. It seems amazing that at my age I am still fit enough to cycle 20 kilometres in an afternoon. It's my birthday in two weeks' time and I'll be 82 years old! I think my long and active life must be due to the healthy life I live.

This brings me to the real reason for my letter, my dear grandson. Your mother tells me that you started smoking some time ago and now your are finding it difficult to give it up. Believe me, I know how easy it is to begin smoking and how tough it is to stop. You see, during adolescence I

also smoked and became addicted to cigarettes.

By the way, did you know that this is because you become addicted in three different ways? First, you can become physically addicted to nicotine(尼古丁), which is one of the hundreds of chemical in cigarettes. This means that after a while your body becomes accustomed to having nicotine in it. So when the drug leaves your body, you get withdrawal symptoms. Secondly, you become addicted through habit. As you know, if you do the same thing over and over again, you begin to do it automatically. Lastly, you can become mentally addicted. I believed I was happier and more relaxed after having a cigarette, so I began to think that I could only feel good when I smoked. Quitting smoking was really difficult because I was addicted in all three ways. But I did finally manage.

When I was young, I didn't know much about the harmful effects of smoking. I didn't know, for example, that it could do terrible damage to your heart and lungs or that it was more difficult for smoking couples to become pregnant. Neither did I know that my cigarette smoke could affect the health of non-smokers. However, what I did know was that my girlfriend thought I smelt terrible. She told me that she wouldn't go out with me again unless I stopped! I also noticed that I became breathless quickly, and that I wasn't enjoying sport as much. When I was taken off the school football team because I was unfit, I knew it was time to quit smoking.

I am sending you some advice I found on the internet. It might help you to stop and strengthen your resolve. I do hope so because I want you to live as long and healthy a life as I have.

I am a member at the Blue Ridge Mountains Writers Conference. This is the conference where I got my start about 15 years ago, so it feels special whenever I go back there.

I usually teach multiple sessions, host a table at meals where I can talk with conferees, and often have about 40-50 private appointments with attendees. I take great pleasure in giving my personal advice on the beginners' writing journey after listening to their puzzlement.

And then I realized something, as I looked across the room and saw AI Gansky and Eva Marie Everson whom I'd had private appointments with many years ago when I was one of the conferees. The only reason I am a member there now is because countless people like them have invested in me. As a new writer, I once expressed my book ideas to Al and Eva, and they encouraged me a lot. Award-winning authors Yvonne Lehman and Steven James welcomed me to their group and shared their knowledge. And Edie, Vonda, Linda, Lynette, Michelle and so many others became my writing friends, offering encouragement and support along the way. I'd never have made it on this journey without them.

Last week, I was invited to experience the life in the countryside with some writer friends. I refused the invitation at first. I was away from home a lot because of the numerous book releases and conferences. I felt so exhausted that I just wanted to stay at home. However, my sweet husband said, "Honey, why don't you go? It will be good for you. It can be a great source of inspiration for you." I'd never have made it without the support of this precious man who's been my chief encourager. It moves me to tears to think about all the times he's cleaned the kitchen, folded the laundry, taken care of our children and lugged my suitcases to the car so I can chase my dreams.

I wouldn't be where I am today without all the supportive people and I want to give them a much-deserved shout-out today.

Asthma(哮喘) is a long-lasting breathing disease that affects millions of Americans, many of whom are children. People who get asthma will suffer from lack of breath, difficulty in breathing or coughing--which are caused by the tightening of the muscles in airways. Untreated asthma can lead to poor lung function and death, but asthma can also be effectively controlled with proper treatments.

Research is discovering genes that contribute to the development of asthma. This development has pointed researchers to the role of indoor and outdoor pollution as environmental factors that contribute to the increased occurrence of asthma.

The Indoor Pollution

Indoor pollution has increased with the developments in building materials and in heating and air conditioning systems. In addition to poisonous gases that come from paint, other materials like dust and perfumes used in household products such as washing powder are recycled continuously through the house, winter and summer.

Unlike the days before central heating or before whole-house air conditioning, these materials and chemicals cannot get out of modern homes. Most often, they cause breathing problems in the members of the family with the least-developed autoimmune(自身免疫的) systems. Proper venting (通风) and use of environmentally-friendly building materials and carpeting can help reduce the presence of these chemicals.

The Outdoor pollution

Researchers have also established outdoor pollution's role as a probable cause of asthma. Asthma has been proven to result from some fuel products. Smog and the small matters carried by it have been recognized as a factor which leads to asthma since the 19th century when London saw more and more diseases in the industrial population. Industrial pollutants and other chemicals which are produced in water treatment and open treated water like that found in the swimming pools also contribute to increased cases of asthma as well as other illnesses.

Those most affected by the increase of industrial and environmental pollution are children. Although much has been done to control the levels of pollution in the US, there still remains much to do as it is a worldwide phenomenon. Until an international effort can be made to limit carbon emissions, the occurrence of environmental asthma will probably continue to increase.

现以“My new room”Part B为例来说说我对任务型教学模式的理解: 教学目标与要求: 1、能够听、说、读、写单词:in,on,under,behind,near; 2、能够听、说、认读单词:over,in front of和句子Where’s the…?It’s… 2、齐唱:My small bedroom. Step2:Pre-task(呈现和学习完成任务所需的语言知识,介绍任务的完成和实施任务的步骤) 1、教师拿出一个盒子,盒子里事先放有一面镜子。让学生猜猜里面有什么东西,问:“What’s in my box?”,并引导学生使用thereis/are句式进行回答。

2、猜完后,教师拿着mirror放进盒子,问:“Where is the mirror?”,引导学生回答:“It’s in the box.”,然后把mirror放在盒子上面和下面,再问,再答,复习学过的方位词:on、under。 Look ! It’s near the box. 5、用同样的方法教学单词over, behind, in front of。教学时注意on与over,near与behind、in front of的比较。 如:“Put your book behindthe chair. Put your pencil over your pencil-box. Look, This is my room . Thereis a trash bin in front of the closet. There is……

任务型阅读 (2014·淮安调研)You say you want to be alone? Think again. Researchers have found that older people with fewer human contacts are more likely to die — even if they're happy in their isolation (孤立状态) — than people with richer social lives. The study adds to the debate over whether loneliness, social isolation, or some combination of the two leads to higher death rate. Social isolation is an objective condition in which people have little communication with others. Loneliness, on the other hand, is an emotional state felt by people who are dissatisfied with their social connections. To find out the effects of being alone versus (比对) just feeling lonely, Steptoe of University College London and his colleagues examined data from 6,500 Britons aged 50 and up who had filled out questionnaires evaluating their levels of loneliness. The most socially isolated subjects had a 26% greater risk of dying, even when sex, age, and other factors linked to survival were taken into account, the researchers report online today. They then made changes about their model to determine whether the connection to death was due to the fact that isolated people are often lonely. It wasn't. The researchers then explored the connection between loneliness itself and death. Intense loneliness also appeared to raise the risk of death by 26% —until the team took into account a host of other factors linked to survival, including wealth, education, and the presence of health problems. Once their impact had been explained, the scientists discovered that loneliness on its own didn't make people more vulnerable (脆弱的) to death. The researchers suspect that older people who have few social ties may not be getting the care they need. No one is urging them to eat right or take their medicine, and in a crisis no one is there to help. Other researchers praise the new work as rigorous (严密的) and well-controlled. But they say it's far from clear that social isolation, not loneliness, is always the real cause of increased death rate. Other studies, including an analysis of older Americans led by John Cacioppo, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, have shown a link between loneliness and a higher death rate. Cacioppo suspects that the disagreement between his study and the new research could lie with cultural differences between Steptoe's British subjects and Americans, and that Britons and Americans may define friends differently, too. Health psychologist Bert Uchino of the University of Utah praises the new study, but he says that researchers are still far from understanding how those two factors affect one another and other health-related behaviors.

Task: Debate on “Since China hosted the 2008 Olympics, what has the Olympics brought to China, positive effects or negative effects?” 学生带着问题“How much do you know about Australia?”

Task-based Instruction on Reading in English Classroom Teaching of Senior High School
